A Model with Propagating Spinons beyond One Dimension

For the model of frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet described in A. A. Nersesyan and A. M. Tsvelik, (Phys. Rev. B{\bf 67}, 024422 (2003)) we calculate correlation functions of staggered magnetization and dimerization. The model is formulated as a collection of antiferromagnetic chains weakly coupled by a frustrated exchange interaction. The calculation done for the case of four chains demonstrates that these functions do not vanish. Since the correlation functions in question factorize into a product of correlation functions of spinon creation and annihilation operators, this constitutes a proof that spinons in this model propagate in the direction perpendicular to the chains.

SU(N) Evolution of a Frustrated Spin Ladder

Recent studies indicate that the weakly coupled spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with next nearest neighbor frustration supports massive spinons when suitably tuned. The straightforward SU(N) generalization of the low energy ladder Hamiltonian yields two independent SU(N) Thirring models with N-1 multiplets of massive ``spinon'' excitations. We study the evolution of the complete set of low-energy dynamical structure factors using form factors. Those corresponding to the smooth (staggered) magnetizations are qualitatively different (the same) in the N=2 and N>2 cases. The absence of single-particle peaks preserves the notion of spinons stabilized by frustration. In contrast to the ladder, we note that the N=infinity limit of the four chain magnet is not a trivial free theory.

A superconductor-insulator transition in a one-dimensional array of Josephson junctions

We consider a one-dimensional Josephson junction array, in the regime where the junction charging energy is much greater than the charging energy of the superconducting islands. In this regime we critically reexamine the continuum limit description and establish the relationship between parameters of the array and the ones of the resulting sine-Gordon model. The later model is formulated in terms of quasi-charge. We argue that despite arguments to the contrary in the literature, such quasi-charge sine-Gordon description remains valid in the vicinity of the phase transition between the insulating and the superconducting phases. We also discuss the effects of random background charges, which are always present in experimental realizations of such arrays.

Analytical results for the Coqblin-Schrieffer model with generalized magnetic fields

Using the approach alternative to the traditional Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz, we derive analytical expressions for the free energy of Coqblin-Schrieffer model with arbitrary magnetic and crystal fields. In Appendix we discuss two concrete examples including the field generated crossover from the SU(4) to the SU(2) symmetry in the SU(4)-symmetric model.

Spinons in more than one dimension: Resonance Valence Bond state stabilized by frustration

For two spatially anisotropic, SU(2)-invariant models of frustrated magnets in arbitrary space dimension we present a non-perturbative proof of the existence of neutral spin-1/2 excitations (spinons). In one model the frustration is static and based on fine tuning of the coupling constants, whereas in the other it is dynamic and does not require adjusting of the model parameters. For both models we derive a low-energy effective action which does not contain any constraints. Though our models admit the standard gauge theory treatment, we follow an alternative approach based on Abelian and non-Abelian bosonization. We prove the existence of propagating spin-1/2 excitations (spinons) and consider in detail certain exactly solvable limits. A qualitative discussion of the most general case is also presented.

Narrow gap Luttinger liquid in Carbon nanotubes

Electron interactions reinforce minigaps induced in metallic nanotubes by an external field and turn the gap field dependence into a universal power law. An exactly solvable Gross-Neveau model with an SU(4) symmetry is derived for neutral excitations near half-filling. Charge excitations, described by a sin-Gordon perturbation of Luttinger liquid theory, are composite solitons formed by the charged and neutral fields with two separate length scales. Charge compressibility at finite density, evaluated in terms of inter-soliton interaction, exhibits a crossover from overlapping to non-overlapping soliton state. Implications for the Coulomb blockade measurements are discussed.

Disordered Dirac Fermions: the Marriage of Three Different Approaches

We compare the critical multipoint correlation functions for two-dimensional (massless) Dirac fermions in the presence of a random su(N) (non-Abelian) gauge potential, obtained by three different methods. We critically reexamine previous results obtained using the replica approach and in the limit of infinite disorder strength and compare them to new results (presented here) obtained using the supersymmetric approach to the N=2 case. We demonstrate that this menage a trois of different approaches leads to identical results. Remarkable relations between apparently different conformal field theories (CFTs) are thereby obtained. We further establish a connection between the random Dirac fermion problem and the c=-2 theory of dense polymers. The presence of the c=-2 theory may be seen in all three different treatments of the disorder.

Experimental realization of a 2D fractional quantum spin liquid

The ground-state ordering and dynamics of the two-dimensional (2D) S=1/2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs_2CuCl_4 is explored using neutron scattering in high magnetic fields. We find that the dynamic correlations show a highly dispersive continuum of excited states, characteristic of the RVB state, arising from pairs of S=1/2 spinons. Quantum renormalization factors for the excitation energies (1.65) and incommensuration (0.56) are large.

Energy level dynamics in systems with weakly multifractal eigenstates: equivalence to 1D correlated fermions

It is shown that the parametric spectral statistics in the critical random matrix ensemble with multifractal eigenvector statistics are identical to the statistics of correlated 1D fermions at finite temperatures. For weak multifractality the effective temperature of fictitious 1D fermions is proportional to (1-d_{n})/n, where d_{n} is the fractal dimension found from the n-th moment of inverse participation ratio. For large energy and parameter separations the fictitious fermions are described by the Luttinger liquid model which follows from the Calogero-Sutherland model. The low-temperature asymptotic form of the two-point equal-parameter spectral correlation function is found for all energy separations and its relevance for the low temperature equal-time density correlations in the Calogero-Sutherland model is conjectured.

Strong Coupling Approach to the Supersymmetric Kondo Model

We carry out the strong coupling expansion for the SU(N) Kondo model where the impurity spin is represented by a L-shaped Young tableau. Using second order perturbation theory around the strong coupling fixed point it is shown that when the antisymmetric component of the Young-tableau contains more than N/2 entries, the strong-coupling fixed point becomes unstable to a two-stage Kondo effect. By comparing the strong coupling results obtained here with the result using a supersymmetric large N expansion, we are also able to confirm the validity of the the supersymmetric formalism for mixed symmetry Kondo models.

Exactly Solvable Ginzburg-Landau theories of Superconducting Order Parameters coupled to Elastic Modes

We consider two families of exactly solvable models describing thermal fluctuations in two-dimensional superconductors coupled to phonons living in an insulating layer, and study the stability of the superconducting state with respect to vortices. The two families are characterized by one or two superconducting planes. The results suggest that the effective critical temperature increases with the thickness of the insulating layer. Also the presence of the additional superconducting layer has the same effect.

Thermodynamics of Fateev's models in the Presence of External Fields

We study the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for a one-parameter quantum field theory recently introduced by V.A.Fateev. The presence of chemical potentials produces a kink condensate that modifies the excitation spectrum. For some combinations of the chemical potentials an additional gapless mode appears. Various energy scales emerge in the problem. An effective field theory, describing the low energy excitations, is also introduced.

Spectral properties of the one-dimensional two-channel Kondo lattice model

We have studied the energy spectrum of a one-dimensional Kondo lattice, where the localized magnetic moments have SU(N) symmetry and two channels of conduction electrons are present. At half filling, the system is shown to exist in two phases: one dominated by RKKY-exchange interaction effects, and the other by Kondo screening. A quantum phase transition point separates these two regimes at temperature $T = 0$. The Kondo-dominated phase is shown to possess soft modes, with spectral gaps much smaller than the Kondo temperature.

Spin-gap physics, ground state degeneracy, and bound states on the depleted kagome lattice

We analyse the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a depleted kagome lattice, where some bonds have been reduced to exchange integral J_2 << J_1. The fully depleted system consists of 1D chains, each with a doubly degenerate singlet-pair ground state and a spectral gap (like the Majumdar-Ghosh model). There are localised and itinerant low-energy excitations. The modes from the lowest branch of excitations are incapable of lifting the 2D system's ground state degeneracy at finite J_2/J_1 << 1. Low-energy excitations of the 2D system are dominated by coherently propagating bound states of the 1D excitations.

Supersymmetric spin operators

We develop a supersymmetric representation of spin operators which unifies the Schwinger and Abrikosov representations of SU(N) spin operators, allowing a second-quantized treatment of representations of the SU(N) group with both symmetric and antisymmetric character. By applying this to the SU(N) Kondo model, we show that it is possible to develop a controlled treatment of both Magnetism and the Kondo effect within a single large N expansion.

Bosonization and Strongly Correlated Systems

This volume provides a detailed account of bosonization. The first part of the book examines the technical aspects of bosonization including one-dimensional fermions, the Gaussian model, the structure of Hilbert space in conformal theories, Bose-Einstein condensation in two dimensions, non-Abelian bosonization, and the Ising and WZNW models. The second part presents applications of the bosonization technique to realistic models including the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, spin liquids in one dimension and the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with alternative exchange. The third part addresses the problems of quantum impurities. Chapters cover potential scattering, the X-ray edge problem, impurities in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids and the multi-channel Kondo problem.

Coupled Ladders in a Magnetic Field

We investigate the phase transitions in two-leg ladders systems in the incommensurate phase, for which the gap is destroyed by a magnetic field ($h_{c1}< h$) and the ladder is not yet totally saturated ($h < h_{c2}$). We compute quantitatively the correlation functions as a function of the magnetic field for an isolated strong coupling ladder $J_\perp \gg J_\parallel$ and use it to study the phase transition occuring in a three dimensional array of antiferromagnetically coupled ladders. The three dimensional ordering is in the universality class of Bose condensation of hard core bosons. We compute the critical temperature $T_c(h)$ as well as various physical quantities such as the NMR relaxations rate. $T_c$ has an unusual camel-like shape with a local minimum at $h=(h_{c1}+h_{c2})/2$ and behaves as $T_c \sim (h-h_{c1})^{2/3}$ for $h\sim h_{c1}$. We discuss the experimental consequences for compounds such as Cu_2(C_5H_{12}N_2)_2Cl_4
