Production and installation of wavelength-shifting reflective light enhancers for the Short-Baseline Near Detector

We report on the design, production, and installation of a wavelength-shifting reflective system on the cathode of the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND), a liquid argon time projection chamber located along the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam. To increase and homogenize scintillation-light collection, 64 double-sided plates were fabricated from FR4, laminated with specular reflector film and coated with 300 $\mu$g/cm$^2$ of tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) wavelength shifter using controlled physical vapor deposition. The coating uniformity was validated through dedicated measurements of deposited mass and profilometry studies. Because exposure to ambient blue/UV light could degrade the TPB, protective filtering and controlled storage conditions were implemented during handling and installation. The coated plates were assembled between conductive meshes for high-voltage compatibility and installed in situ during detector integration. This system constitutes the largest TPB-coated area deployed in a neutrino detector. It operates in conjunction with SBND's photon detection system, which consists of photomultiplier tubes and X-ARAPUCAs. Early light-collection measurements show high uniformity and light response across the detector, supporting improved triggering, calorimetry, and position reconstruction in SBND.

Search for Light Dark Sectors Using Electron-Photon Collisions

The dark photon is a new gauge boson that naturally arises in many beyond the Standard Model theoretical models, featuring interactions that resemble quantum electrodynamics. Due to this feature, it is often considered the portal between dark and visible sectors. For this reason, it has become the target of many experimental searches worldwide. In this work, we propose a search for dark photons based on the Inverse Compton scattering, $\gamma e^- \rightarrow A^\prime e^-$, to be conducted at electron accelerators. In this setup, photons from a laser source would impinge on the accelerated electron beam, producing a dark photon in the final state. We propose an experimental setup to take advantage of the photon counting technique, and we derive the projected sensitivity by considering the energy of the incident photon to be about 1 eV and an electron beam of 3 GeV. We show that this experimental setup could cover an unexplored region of parameter space and constitute a promising probe for dark sectors in the future.

Brazilian Report on Dark Matter 2024

One of the key scientific objectives for the next decade is to uncover the nature of dark matter (DM). We should continue prioritizing targets such as weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs), Axions, and other low-mass dark matter candidates to improve our chances of achieving it. A varied and ongoing portfolio of experiments spanning different scales and detection methods is essential to maximize our chances of discovering its composition. This report paper provides an updated overview of the Brazilian community's activities in dark matter and dark sector physics over the past years with a view for the future. It underscores the ongoing need for financial support for Brazilian groups actively engaged in experimental research to sustain the Brazilian involvement in the global search for dark matter particles

PoWER: a new concept for DUNE Phase 2 FD PDS

We propose a novel concept for the future modules of the DUNE Phase 2 Far Detector Photodetection System, namely the Polymer Wavelength shifter and Enhanced Reflection - PoWER. In this concept, the field cage of the LArTPC is entirely covered with polymeric wavelength shifting foils (PolyEthylene Naphthalate - PEN) to convert the liquid argon scintillation light from VUV to visible, and an Enhanced Specular Reflector (ESR) is installed on the membrane aiming to increase the number of reflections and consequently the detection probability. In addition, we use Light Detection Units (LDUs), which are a combination of standard and VUV-sensitive SiPM that can be used as an active veto for events occurring outside the field cage. We present a preliminary study using a Monte Carlo simulation, including a Light Map for photons generated inside the field cage and a demonstration of the active veto.

Scintillation Light in SBND: Simulation, Reconstruction, and Expected Performance of the Photon Detection System

SBND is the near detector of the Short-Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab. Its location near to the Booster Neutrino Beam source and relatively large mass will allow the study of neutrino interactions on argon with unprecedented statistics. This paper describes the expected performance of the SBND photon detection system, using a simulated sample of beam neutrinos and cosmogenic particles. Its design is a dual readout concept combining a system of 120 photomultiplier tubes, used for triggering, with a system of 192 X-ARAPUCA devices, located behind the anode wire planes. Furthermore, covering the cathode plane with highly-reflective panels coated with a wavelength-shifting compound recovers part of the light emitted towards the cathode, where no optical detectors exist. We show how this new design provides a high light yield and a more uniform detection efficiency, an excellent timing resolution and an independent 3D-position reconstruction using only the scintillation light. Finally, the whole reconstruction chain is applied to recover the temporal structure of the beam spill, which is resolved with a resolution on the order of nanoseconds.

Enhancement of the X-Arapuca photon detection device for the DUNE experiment

In the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), the VUV LAr luminescence is collected by light trap devices named X-Arapuca, sizing (480x93) mm2. Six thousand of these units will be deployed in the first DUNE ten kiloton far detector module. In this work we present the first characterization of the photon detection efficiency of an X-Arapuca device sizing (200x75) mm2 via a complete and accurate set of measurements along the cell longitudinal axis with a movable 241-Am source. The MPPCs photosensors are readout by a cryogenic transimpedance amplifier to enhance the single photoelectron sensitivity and improve the signal-to-noise while ganging 8 MPPC for a total surface of 288 mm2. Moreover we developed a new photon downshifting polymeric material, by which the X-Arapuca photon detection efficiency was enhanced of about +50% with respect to the baseline off-shell product deployed in the standard device configuration. The achieved results are compared to previous measurements on a half size X-Arapuca device, with a fixed source facing the center, with no cold amplification stage, and discussed in view of the DUNE full size optical cell construction for both the horizontal and the vertical drift configurations of the DUNE TPC design and in view of liquid Argon doping by ppms of Xe. Other particle physics projects adopting Liquid Argon as target or active veto, as Dark Side and LEGEND or the DUNE Near Detector will take advantage of this novel wavelength shifting material.

The Electronics, Trigger and Data Acquisition System for the Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber of the DarkSide-50 Search for Dark Matter

The DarkSide-50 experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso is a search for dark matter using a dual phase time projection chamber with 50 kg of low radioactivity argon as target. Light signals from interactions in the argon are detected by a system of 38 photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs), 19 above and 19 below the TPC volume inside the argon cryostat. We describe the electronics which processes the signals from the photo-multipliers, the trigger system which identifies events of interest, and the data-acquisition system which records the data for further analysis. The electronics include resistive voltage dividers on the PMTs, custom pre-amplifiers mounted directly on the PMT voltage dividers in the liquid argon, and custom amplifier/discriminators (at room temperature). After amplification, the PMT signals are digitized in CAEN waveform digitizers, and CAEN logic modules are used to construct the trigger, the data acquisition system for the TPC is based on the Fermilab "artdaq" software. The system has been in operation since early 2014.

The intrinsic dispersion of the Faber-Jackson relation for early-type galaxies as function of the mass and redshift

Aims. Recently it has been reported that the intrinsic dispersion at constant magnitude of the structural relations from early-type galaxies is a useful tool to study the universality of these structural relations, that is to say, to study whether the structural relations depend on luminosity, wavelength, redshift and/or environment. In this work we study the intrinsic dispersion of the Faber-Jackson relation as function of the luminosity, mass and redshift. Methods. We use a sample of approximately 90 000 early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR7) spanning a magnitude range of 7 $mag$ in both $g$ and $r$ filters. We calculate the intrinsic dispersion of the Faber-Jackson relation at approximately constant magnitude and compare this at different luminosities, masses and redshifts. Results. The main results are the following: i) The intrinsic dispersion of the Faber-Jackson relation depends on the luminosity, mass and redshift. ii) The distribution for brighter and more massive galaxies has smaller intrinsic dispersion than that for fainter and less massive galaxies. iii) The distribution of bright and massive galaxies at higher redshift has smaller intrinsic dispersion than those similar galaxies at low redshift. Conclusions. Comparisons of the results found in this work with recent studies from the literature make us conclude that the intrinsic dispersion of the Faber-Jackson relation could depend on the history of galaxies, in other words, the intrinsic dispersion could depend on the number and nature of transformation events that have affected the galaxies along their life times, such as collapse, accretion, interaction and merging.

The Faber-Jackson relation for early-type galaxies: Dependence on the magnitude range

We take a sample of early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR7, $\sim$ 90 000 galaxies) spanning a range of approximately 7 $mag$ in both $g$ and $r$ filters and analyse the behaviour of the Faber-Jackson relation parameters as functions of the magnitude range. We calculate the parameters in two ways: i) We consider the faintest (brightest) galaxies in each sample and we progressively increase the width of the magnitude interval by inclusion of the brighter (fainter) galaxies (increasing-magnitude-intervals), and ii) we consider narrow-magnitude intervals of the same width ($\Delta M = 1.0$ $mag$) over the whole magnitude range available (narrow-magnitude-intervals). Our main results are that: i) in both increasing and narrow-magnitude-intervals the Faber-Jackson relation parameters change systematically, ii) non-parametric tests show that the fluctuations in the values of the slope of the Faber-Jackson relation are not products of chance variations. We conclude that the values of the Faber-Jackson relation parameters depend on the width of the magnitude range and the luminosity of galaxies within the magnitude range. This dependence is caused, to a great extent by the selection effects and because the geometrical shape of the distribution of galaxies on the $M - \log (\sigma_{0})$ plane depends on luminosity. We therefore emphasize that if the luminosity of galaxies or the width of the magnitude range or both are not taken into consideration when comparing the structural relations of galaxy samples for different wavelengths, environments, redshifts and luminosities, any differences found may be misinterpreted.
