Aperiodic clustered and periodic hexagonal vegetation spot arrays explained by inhomogeneous environments and climate trends in arid ecosystems

Due to climate change, overgrazing, and deforestation, arid ecosystems are vulnerable to desertification and land degradation. As aridity increases, vegetation cover loses spatial homogeneity and self-organizes into heterogeneous vegetation patterns, a step before a catastrophic shift to bare soil. Several studies suggest that environmental inhomogeneities in time or space are crucial to understand these phenomena. Using a unified mathematical model and incorporating environmental inhomogeneities in space, we show how two branches of vegetation patterns create a hysteresis loop as the mortality level changes. In an increasing mortality scenario, one observes an equilibrium branch of high vegetation biomass that forms self-organized hexagonal-like patterns. However, when the mortality trend is reversed, one observes a branch with low biomass and no periodicity, where vegetation spots form disordered clusters instead of a hexagonal lattice. This behavior is supported by remote sensing and field observations and can be linked to climate change in arid ecosystems.

Instantaneous versus non-instantaneous approach to relativistic ionization of atomic hydrogen by electron impact

We present a theoretical model for atomic hydrogen ionization by electron impact in the instantaneous approximation and the more accurate non-instantaneous approach using the methods of Quantum Electrodynamics, for the binary coplanar and the coplanar asymmetric geometries. All electrons are described by plane wave functions in the coplanar binary geometry but in the asymmetric geometry the ejected electron is described by a Sommerfeld-Maue wave function. It is shown that the two models give the same results in the non relativistic limit for the binary coplanar geometry where the interactions can be treated as instantaneous. However, this is no longer true for the relativistic case where one has to take into account both the instantaneous interaction and the radiation interaction. These results are obtained in the first order of perturbation theory.

The Kinetic of the Atomic Relaxation Induced by Laser Noise

We present a theoretical study of strong laser-atom interactions, when the laser field parameters are subjected to random processes. The atom is modelled by a two-level and three-level systems, while the statistical fluctuations of the laser field are described by a pre-Gaussian model.
