Properties of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films grown by pulsed laser deposition on CeO$_2$-buffered sapphire

In the present work we study the growth by pulsed laser deposition of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films on the r-cut sapphire substrates. To improve the matching of the lattice parameters between the substrate and the film we use CeO$_{2}$ buffer layer, recrystallized prior to the deposition of YBCO. The optimal thickness and temperature of recrystallization of the buffer layer is first determined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray diffraction. Next, we use the AFM to examine the dependence of YBCO film roughness on the film thickness, and we study the homogeneity of magnetic flux penetration into the films by magneto-optical imaging. We find that the superconducting critical temperature and critical current density of these films are very similar to those of YBCO films grown on well-matched substrates. It appears that the microstructure of YBCO films is affected by structural defects in the buffer layer as well as variations in oxygen deficiency, which results in high values of critical current density suitable for application.

Saturation of resistivity and Kohler's rule in Ni-doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$ cuprate

We present the results of electrical transport measurements of La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$Cu$_{1-y}$Ni$_{y}$O$_{4}$ thin single-crystal films at magnetic fields up to 9 T. Adding Ni impurity with strong Coulomb scattering potential to slightly underdoped cuprate makes the signs of resistivity saturation at $ρ_{sat}$ visible in the measurement temperature window up to 350 K. Employing the parallel-resistor formalism reveals that $ρ_{sat}$ is consistent with classical Ioffe-Regel-Mott limit and changes with carrier concentration $n$ as $ρ_{sat}\propto 1/\sqrt{n}$. Thermopower measurements show that Ni tends to localize mobile carriers, decreasing their effective concentration as $n\!\cong0.15\!-\!y$. The classical unmodified Kohler's rule is fulfilled for magnetoresistance in the nonsuperconducting part of the phase diagram when applied to the ideal branch in the parallel-resistor model.

Transition-Metal Substitutions in Iron Chalcogenides

The $ab$-plane resistivity and Hall effect are studied in Fe$_{1-y}$M$_y$Te$_{0.65}$Se$_{0.35}$ single crystals doped with two transition metal elements, M = Co or Ni, over a wide doping range, $0 \leq y \leq 0.2$. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c}$, reaches zero for Co at $y \simeq 0.14$ and for Ni at $y \simeq 0.032$, while the resistivity at the $T_{c}$ onset increases weakly with Co doping, and strongly with Ni doping. The Hall coefficient $R_H$, positive for $y$ = 0, remains so at high temperatures for all $y$, while it changes sign to negative at low $T$ for $y > 0.135$ (Co) and $y > 0.06$ (Ni). The analysis based on a two band model suggests that at high $T$ residual hole pockets survive the doping, but holes get localized upon the lowering of $T$, so that the effect of the electron doping on the transport becomes evident. The suppression of the $T_c$ by Co impurity is related to electron doping, while in case of the Ni impurity strong electron localization most likely contributes to fast decrease of the $T_c$.

Spin-glass behavior in Ni-doped La1:85Sr0:15CuO4

The dynamic and static magnetic properties of La1:85Sr0:15Cu1-yNiyO4 with Ni concentration up to y=0.63 are reported. All the features that characterize the spin-glass (SG) behavior are found: bifurcation of the dc susceptibility chi vs temperature curve, a peak in the zero-field cooling branch of this curve accompanied by a step in the imaginary part of the ac susceptibility chi_ac, frequency dependence of the peak position in the real part of chi_ac and scaling behavior. The decay of remnant magnetization is described by a stretched-exponential function. The characteristic time from the critical slowing-down formula that governs the dynamics of the system suggests the existence of the spin clusters. The strongest interactions between the fluctuating entities are at y equal to the charge carriers concentration in the system. The SG transition temperature decreases linearly with decreasing y for y<0.30 and extrapolates to 0 K at y=0 what means that Ni display a magnetic character in the surrounding Cu-O network starting from the smallest concentration y. The static critical exponents characterizing the scaling behavior of the nonlinear part of chi lie between those typical for three dimensional Ising-like and Heisenberg-like systems

c-axis magnetotransport in CeCoIn$_{5}$

We present the results of out-of-plane electrical transport measurements on the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$ at temperatures from 40 mK to 400 K and in magnetic field up to 9 T. For $T <$ 10 K transport measurements show that the zero-field resistivity $ρ_{c}$ changes linearly with temperature and extrapolates nearly to zero at 0 K, indicative of non-Fermi-liquid (nFL) behavior associated with a quantum critical point (QCP). The longitudinal magnetoresistance (LMR) of CeCoIn$_{5}$ for fields applied parallel to the c-axis is negative and scales as $B/(T+T^{*})$ between 50 and 100 K, revealing the presence of a single-impurity Kondo energy scale $T^{*} \sim 2$ K. Beginning at 16 K a small positive LMR feature is evident for fields less than 3 tesla that grows in magnitude with decreasing temperature. For higher fields the LMR is negative and increases in magnitude with decreasing temperature. This sizable negative magnetoresistance scales as $B{^2}/T$ from 2.6 K to roughly 8 K, and it arises from an extrapolated residual resistivity that becomes negative and grows quadratically with field in the nFL temperature regime. Applying a magnetic field along the c-axis with B $>$ B$_{c2}$ restores Fermi-liquid behavior in $ρ_{c}(T)$ at $T$ less than 130 mK. Analysis of the $T{^2}$ resistivity coefficient's field-dependence suggests that the QCP in CeCoIn$_{5}$ is located \emph{below} the upper critical field, inside the superconducting phase. These data indicate that while high-$T$ c-axis transport of CeCoIn$_{5}$ exhibits features typical for a heavy fermion system, low-$T$ transport is governed both by spin fluctuations associated with the QCP and Kondo interactions that are influenced by the underlying complex electronic structure intrinsic to the anisotropic CeCoIn$_{5}$ crystal structure.

Localization and Interaction Effects in Strongly Underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4

The in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) in La2-xSrxCuO4 films with 0.03 < x < 0.05 has been studied in the temperature range 1.6 K to 100 K, and in magnetic fields up to 14 T, parallel and perpendicular to the CuO2 planes. The behavior of the MR is consistent with a predominant influence of interaction effects at high temperatures, switching gradually to a regime dominated by spin scattering at low T. Weak localization effects are absent. A positive orbital MR appears close to the boundary between the antiferromagnetic and the spin-glass phase, suggesting the onset of Maki-Thompson superconducting fluctuations deep inside the insulating phase.

Anisotropy of Thermal Conductivity and Possible Signature of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in CeCoIn_5

We have measured the thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 in the vicinity of the upper critical field, with the magnetic field perpendicular to the c axis. Thermal conductivity displays a discontinuous jump at the superconducting phase boundary below critical temperature T_0 ~ 1 K, indicating a change from a second to first order transition and confirming the recent results of specific heat measurements on CeCoIn_5. In addition, the thermal conductivity data as a function of field display a kink at a field H_k below the superconducting critical field, which closely coincides with the recently discovered anomaly in specific heat, tentatively identified with the appearance of the spatially inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting state. Our results indicate that the thermal conductivity is enhanced within the FFLO state, and call for further theoretical investigations of the order parameter's real space structure (and, in particular, the structure of vortices) and of the thermal transport within the inhomogeneous FFLO state.

Impurity and strain effects on the magnetotransport of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 films

The influence of zinc doping and strain related effects on the normal state transport properties(the resistivity, the Hall angle and the orbital magneto- resistance(OMR) is studied in a series of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 films with values of y between 0 and 0.12 and various degrees of strain induced by the mismatch between the films and the substrate. The zinc doping affects only the constant term in the temperature dependence of cotangent theta but the strain affects both the slope and the constant term, while their ratio remains constant.OMR is decreased by zinc doping but is unaffected by strain. The ratio delta rho/(rho*tan^2 theta) is T-independent but decreases with impurity doping. These results put strong constraints on theories of the normal state of high- temperature superconductors.

Magnetotransport in the Normal State of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 Films

We have studied the magnetotransport properties in the normal state for a series of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 films with values of y, between 0 and 0.12. A variable degree of compressive or tensile strain results from the lattice mismatch between the substrate and the film, and affects the transport properties differently from the influence of the zinc impurities. In particular, the orbital magnetoresistance (OMR) varies with y but is strain-independent. The relations for the resistivity and the Hall angle and the proportionality between the OMR and tan^2 theta are followed about 70 K. We have been able to separate the strain and impurity effects by rewriting the above relations, where each term is strain-independent and depends on y only. We also find that changes in the lattice constants give rise to closely the same fractional changes in other terms of the equation. The OMR is more strongly supressed by the addition of impurities than tan^2 theta. We conclude that the relaxation ratethat governs Hall effect is not the same as for the magnetoresistance. We also suggest a correspondence between the transport properties and the opening of the pseudogap at a temperature which changes when the La-sr ratio changes, but does not change with the addition of the zinc impurities.

Different Gd3+ sites in CaB6: an ESR study

The local environment of Gd3+ (4f7 S=7/2) ions in single crystals of Ca1-xGdxB6 (0.0001 < x < 0.01) is studied by means of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). The spectra for low concentration samples (x < 0.001) show a split spectrum due to cubic crystal field effects(CFE). The lineshape of each fine structure line is lorentzian, indicating an insulating environment for the Gd3+ ions. For higher concentrations (0.003 < x < 0.01), the spectra show a single resonance (g=1.992(4), DH1/2 ~ 30-60 Oe) with no CFE and dysonian lineshape indicating metallic environment for the Gd3+ ions. For intermediate concentrations, a coexistence of spectra corresponding to insulating and metallic regions is observed. Most of the measured samples show the weak ferromagnetism (WF) as reported for Ca1-xLaxB6 (x ~ 0.005), but, surprisingly, this WF has no effect in our ESR spectra either for metallic or insulating environments. This result suggests that the ferromagnetism in these systems might be isolated in clusters (defect-rich regions) and its relationship with metallicity is nontrivial.

Metallic nonsuperconducting phase and d-wave superconductivity in Zn-substituted LaSrCuO

Measurements of the resistivity, magnetoresistance and penetration depth were made on films of LaSrCuO with up to 12 at.% of Zn substituted for the Cu. The results show that the quadratic temperature dependence of the inverse square of the penetration depth, indicative of d-wave superconductivity, is not affected by doping. The suppression of superconductivity leads to a metallic nonsuperconducting phase, as expected for a pairing mechanism related to spin fluctuations. The metal-insulator transition occurs in the vicinity of kFl~1, and appears to be disorder-driven, with the carrier concentration unaffected by doping.

Dynamic Nuclear Overhauser Shifts in Larmor beats from a quantum well

The significance of nuclear spin polarisation in time-resolved optical studies of III-V semiconductors is addressed. Electron Larmor beats in pump-probe reflectivity from a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well show Overhauser shift of 0.7 T due to accumulated nuclear polarisation /I=0.065. This leads to precision values of electron g-factor, elucidates nuclear spin pumping and diffusion mechanisms in quantum wells and informs discussion of implications for spin-electronics and transport.

Two lifetimes and the pseudogap in the orbital magnetoresistance of Zn-substituted La{1.85}Sr{0.15}CuO{4}

The effect of zinc doping on the anomalous temperature dependence of the magnetoresistance and the Hall effect in the normal state was studied in a series of La{1.85}Sr{0.15}Cu{1-y}Zn{y}O{4} films, with values of y between zero and 0.12. The orbital magnetoresistance at high temperatures is found to be proportional to the square of the tangent of the Hall angle, as predicted by the model of two relaxation rates, for all Zn-doped specimens, including nonsuperconducting films. The proportionality constant is equal to 13.7+/-0.5 independent of doping. This is very different from the behavior observed in underdoped La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} films where a decrease of x destroys the proportionality. In addition, the behavior of the orbital magnetoresistance at low temperatures is found to be different depending on whether x is changed or y. We suggest that these differences reflect a different evolution of the pseudogap in the two cases.

Magnetic-Field Induced Localization in the Normal State of Superconducting La_2-xSr_xCuo_4

Magnetoresistance measurements of highly underdoped superconducting La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 films with $x = 0.051$ and $x = 0.048$, performed in dc magnetic fields up to 20 T and at temperatures down to 40 mK, reveal a magnetic-field induced transition from weak to strong localization in the normal state. The normal-state conductances per CuO_2--plane, measured at different fields in a single specimen, are found to collapse to one curve with the use of a single scaling parameter that is inversely proportional to the localization length. The scaling parameter extrapolates to zero near zero field and possibly at a finite field, suggesting that in the zero-field limit the electronic states may be extended.
