A variational approach to the macroscopic electrodynamics of anisotropic hard superconductors

We consider the Bean's critical state model for anisotropic superconductors. A variational problem solved by the quasi--static evolution of the internal magnetic field is obtained as the $Γ$-limit of functionals arising from the Maxwell's equations combined with a power law for the dissipation. Moreover, the quasi--static approximation of the internal electric field is recovered, using a first order necessary condition. If the sample is a long cylinder subjected to an axial uniform external field, the macroscopic electrodynamics is explicitly determined.

A sharp uniqueness result for a class of variational problems solved by a distance function

We consider the minimization problem for an integral functional $J$, possibly non-convex and non-coercive in $W^{1,1}_0(Ω)$, where $Ω\subset\R^n$ is a bounded smooth set. We prove sufficient conditions in order to guarantee that a suitable Minkowski distance is a minimizer of $J$. The main result is a necessary and sufficient condition in order to have the uniqueness of the minimizer. We show some application to the uniqueness of solution of a system of PDEs of Monge-Kantorovich type arising in problems of mass transfer theory.

On a system of partial differential equations of Monge-Kantorovich type

We consider a system of PDEs of Monge-Kantorovich type arising from models in granular matter theory and in electrodynamics of hard superconductors. The existence of a solution of such system (in a regular open domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$), whose construction is based on an asymmetric Minkowski distance from the boundary of $Ω$, was already established in [G. Crasta and A. Malusa, The distance function from the boundary in a Minkowski space, to appear in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.]. In this paper we prove that this solution is essentially unique. A fundamental tool in our analysis is a new regularity result for an elliptic nonlinear equation in divergence form, which is of some interest by itself.

The distance function from the boundary in a Minkowski space

Let the space $\mathbb{R}^n$ be endowed with a Minkowski structure $M$ (that is $M\colon \mathbb{R}^n \to [0,+\infty)$ is the gauge function of a compact convex set having the origin as an interior point, and with boundary of class $C^2$), and let $d^M(x,y)$ be the (asymmetric) distance associated to $M$. Given an open domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ of class $C^2$, let $d_Ω(x) := \inf\{d^M(x,y); y\in\partialΩ\}$ be the Minkowski distance of a point $x\inΩ$ from the boundary of $Ω$. We prove that a suitable extension of $d_Ω$ to $\mathbb{R}^n$ (which plays the röle of a signed Minkowski distance to $\partial Ω$) is of class $C^2$ in a tubular neighborhood of $\partial Ω$, and that $d_Ω$ is of class $C^2$ outside the cut locus of $\partialΩ$ (that is the closure of the set of points of non--differentiability of $d_Ω$ in $Ω$). In addition, we prove that the cut locus of $\partial Ω$ has Lebesgue measure zero, and that $Ω$ can be decomposed, up to this set of vanishing measure, into geodesics starting from $\partialΩ$ and going into $Ω$ along the normal direction (with respect to the Minkowski distance). We compute explicitly the Jacobian determinant of the change of variables that associates to every point $x\in Ω$ outside the cut locus the pair $(p(x), d_Ω(x))$, where $p(x)$ denotes the (unique) projection of $x$ on $\partialΩ$, and we apply these techniques to the analysis of PDEs of Monge-Kantorovich type arising from problems in optimal transportation theory and shape optimization.
