Nonlinear calcium King plot constrains new bosons and nuclear properties

Nonlinearities in King plots (KP) of isotope shifts (IS) can reveal the existence of beyond-Standard-Model (BSM) interactions that couple electrons and neutrons. However, it is crucial to distinguish higher-order Standard Model (SM) effects from BSM physics. We measure the IS of the transitions ${{}^{3}P_{0}~\rightarrow~{}^{3}P_{1}}$ in $\mathrm{Ca}^{14+}$ and ${{}^{2}S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^{2}D_{5/2}}$ in $\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ with sub-Hz precision as well as the nuclear mass ratios with relative uncertainties below $4\times10^{-11}$ for the five stable, even isotopes of calcium (${}^{40,42,44,46,48}\mathrm{Ca}$). Combined, these measurements yield a calcium KP nonlinearity with a significance of $\sim 900 \sigma$. Precision calculations show that the nonlinearity cannot be fully accounted for by the expected largest higher-order SM effect, the second-order mass shift, and identify the little-studied nuclear polarization as the only remaining SM contribution that may be large enough to explain it. Despite the observed nonlinearity, we improve existing KP-based constraints on a hypothetical Yukawa interaction for most of the new boson masses between $10~\mathrm{eV/c^2}$ and $10^7~\mathrm{eV/c^2}$.

Additional Light Waves in Hydrodynamics and Holography

We study the phenomenon of additional light waves (ALWs), observed in crystal optics: two or more electromagnetic waves with the same polarization, but different refractive index, propagate simultaneously in a isotropic medium. We show that ALWs are common in relativistic hydrodynamics, and in particular in strongly coupled systems that admit a dual gravitational description, where the ALWs are dual to quasi normal modes in the AdS gravity. We study both the transverse and the longitudinal light wave propagation. In the longitudinal channel we find a transition between regimes with different number of excitonic resonances which resembles the transition to standard optics observed in crystals.

Holographic Optics and Negative Refractive Index

In recent years a very exciting and intense activity has been devoted to the understanding and construction of materials that enjoy exotic optical properties, such as a negative refractive index. Motivated by these experimental and theoretical developments, we use the string-inspired idea of holography to study the electromagnetic response of a certain class of media: strongly coupled relativistic systems that admit a dual gravitational description. Our results indicate that this type of media generally have a negative refractive index. Moreover we observe that a negative refractive index could be a common feature of relativistic hydrodynamic systems at low frequencies.

Metastable vacua and geometric deformations

We study the geometric interpretation of metastable vacua for systems of D3 branes at non isolated toric deformable singularities. Using the L^{aba} examples, we investigate the relations between the field theoretic susy breaking and restoration and the complex deformations of the CY singularities.

Meta-stable A_n quiver gauge theories

We study metastable dynamical breaking of supersymmetry in A_n quiver gauge theories. We present a general analysis and criteria for the perturbative existence of metastable vacua in quivers of any length. Different mechanisms of gauge mediation can be realized.

On meta-stable SQCD with adjoint matter and gauge mediation

We briefly review our analysis of a model with non supersymmetric vacua in N=1 gauge theories with adjoint matter and no R-symmetry. We show here that this model without any modification fits into a direct gauge mediation scenario and leads to massive gauginos.

Non-supersymmetric Meta-Stable vacua in SU(N) SQCD with adjoint matter

We investigate models of SU(N) SQCD with adjoint matter and non trivial mesonic deformations. We apply standard methods in the dual magnetic theory and we find meta-stable supersymmetry breaking vacua with arbitrary large lifetime. We comment on the difference with known models.

On supersymmetry breaking and the Dijkgraaf-Vafa conjecture

We investigate the Dijkgraaf-Vafa proposal when supersymmetry is broken. We consider U(N) SYM with chiral adjoint matter where the coupling constants in the tree-level superpotential are promoted to chiral spurions. The holomorphic part of the low-energy glueball superpotential can still be analyzed. We compute the holomorphic supersymmetry breaking contributions using methods of the geometry underlying the N=1 effective gauge theory viewed as a Whitham system. We also study the change in the effective glueball superpotential using perturbative supergraph techniques in the presence of spurions.
