First Observation of an Exotic Reggeon

We present new \compass high-statistics measurements of the peripheral production of $\eta \pi^-$ and $\eta^\prime \pi^-$ pairs in the reactions $\pi^- p \to \eta^{(\prime)}\pi^- p$. For the first time, we perform an unbinned analysis of the high-mass region of the $\eta\pi^-$ and $\eta^\prime\pi^-$ systems, which allows us to disentangle the exchange mechanisms governing their production. We report the first observation in high-energy scattering of an exotic Reggeon with high significance exceeding $5\,\sigma$ for both channels, which is, most likely, related to the exotic $\pi_1(1600)$.8

Dihadron Transverse-Spin Asymmetries in Muon-Deuteron Deep-Inelastic Scattering

In 2022, the COMPASS collaboration performed semi-inclusive measurements of deep-inelastic muon-scattering on a transversely polarised deuteron (6LiD) target. From these data, transverse-spin-dependent dihadron asymmetries are extracted using pairs of oppositely charged hadrons. These asymmetries are directly sensitive to the quark transversity distributions and provide an independent handle on these fundamental quantities with respect to the Collins asymmetries measured in single-hadron production. The present results significantly improve upon the previous COMPASS deuteron measurements, which were the only available deuteron data worldwide, and reach a statistical precision comparable to that of the existing proton results from COMPASS. A small but nonzero asymmetry is observed at large Bjorken-x, consistent with theoretical expectations. A point-by-point extraction of the valence-quark transversity distributions yields, in particular, a substantially improved determination of the d-quark transversity. These measurements represent a major step towards a complete flavour mapping of the transverse-spin structure of the nucleon.

A dynamical dichotomy in large binary asteroids

No less than 15% of large (diameter greater than 140 km) asteroids have satellites. The commonly accepted mechanism for their formation is post-impact reaccumulation. However, the detailed physical and dynamical properties of these systems are not well understood, and many of them have not been studied in detail. We aim to study the population of large binary asteroid systems. To do so, we compare the gravitational fields predicted from the shape of the primary body with the non-Keplerian gravitational components identified in orbital models of the satellites of each system. We also aim to contextualize these systems in the greater population of large binary systems, providing clues to asteroid satellite formation. We reduce all historical high-angular-resolution adaptive-optics (AO) images from ground-based telescopes to conduct astrometric and photometric measurements of each system's components. We then determine orbital solutions for each system using the genoid algorithm. We model the shapes of the system primaries using lightcurve-inversion techniques scaled with stellar occultations and AO images, and we develop internal structure models using SHTOOLS. Finally, we compare the distribution of the physical and orbital properties of the known binary asteroid systems. We find that differences between studies binary systems reflect an overall dichotomy within the population of large binary systems, with a strong correlation between primary elongation and satellite eccentricity observed in one group. We determine that there may be two distinct formation pathways influencing the end-state dichotomy in these binary systems, and that (762) Pulcova and (283) Emma belong to the two separate groups.

Spectroscopy of Strange Mesons and First Observation of a Strange Crypto-Exotic State with $J^P=0^-$

We measured the strange-meson spectrum in the scattering reaction $K^{-}+p \rightarrow K^{-}\pi^{-}\pi^{-}+p$ with the COMPASS spectrometer at CERN. Using the world's largest sample of this reaction, we performed a comprehensive partial-wave analysis of the mesonic final state. It substantially extends the strange-meson spectrum covering twelve states with masses up to 2.4 GeV/$c^2$. We observe the first candidate for a crypto-exotic strange meson with $J^{P}=0^{-}$ and find $K_3$ and $K_4$ states consistent with predictions for the ground states.

Monte Carlo results on the Collins asymmetries in $e^+e^-$ annihilation

The quark spin effects have been introduced in the Pythia 8 Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of $e^+e^-$ annihilation by interfacing the generator with the StringSpinner package. The package allows to simulate quark spin effects in the string fragmentation routine of Pythia by using the string+${}^3P_0$ model, recently applied to the fragmentation of a string stretched between a quark-antiquark pair with correlated spin states. StringSpinner is used to carry out simulations of $e^+e^-$ annihilation at the center of mass energy of $10.6\,\rm{GeV}$. The Collins asymmetries are extracted from the simulated data for back-to-back pion pairs using both the thrust axis method and the hadronic plane method. The results are compared with the data from the BELLE and BABAR experiments, finding a satisfactory agreement.

Multiplicities of positive and negative pions, kaons and unidentified hadrons from deep-inelastic scattering of muons off a liquid hydrogen target

The multiplicities of positive and negative pions, kaons and unidentified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering are measured in bins of the Bjorken scaling variable $x$, the relative virtual-photon energy $y$ and the fraction of the virtual-photon energy transferred to the final-state hadron $z$. Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam of both electric charges and a liquid hydrogen target. These measurements cover the kinematic domain with photon virtuality $Q^2 > 1$ (GeV/$c)^2$, $0.004 < x < 0.4$, $0.1 < y < 0.7$ and $0.2 < z < 0.85$, in accordance with the kinematic domain used in earlier published COMPASS multiplicity measurements with an isoscalar target. The calculation of radiative corrections was improved by using the Monte Carlo generator DJANGOH, which results in up to 12\% larger corrections in the low-$x$ region.

Quark spin effects in $e^+e^-$ annihilation: a Monte Carlo event generator study

Quark spin effects in $e^+e^-$ annihilation to pseudoscalar and vector mesons are implemented for the first time in the PYTHIA Monte Carlo event generator. The spin-dependent fragmentation of the string stretched between the produced quark-antiquark pair with correlated spin states is described by the string+${}^3P_0$ model implemented in the string fragmentation routine of PYTHIA by using the StringSpinner package. The simulated events are used to study the model predictions for the Collins asymmetries of mesons produced back-to-back in the $e^+e^-$ center of mass system by using both the thrust axis method and the hadronic plane method. The obtained asymmetries are compared to the available data from the BELLE and BABAR experiments and the underlying Collins analysing power from the string+${}^3P_0$ model is compared with phenomenological extractions.

Simulation of $e^+e^-$ annihilation with quark spin effects

The quark spin effects are introduced for the first time in the string fragmentation routine of the Pythia 8 Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of $e^+e^-$ annihilation to hadrons. To describe the spin effects the string+${}^3P_0$ model of polarized hadronization with emissions of pseudoscalar and vector mesons is used. The spin effects are activated in the generator by extending the StringSpinner package, previously applied to the simulation of deep inelastic scattering off a polarized nucleon. The generator is used to carry out simulations of $e^+e^-$ annihilation at the center of mass energy of $10.6\,\rm{GeV}$. The Collins asymmetry for back-to-back pion pairs is evaluated and compared to the asymmetry as measured by the BELLE experiment. A satisfactory agreement is found.

Long term experience with perfluorobutane in COMPASS RICH

COMPASS RICH-1 has used high-purity perfluorobutane as radiator gas since 2001. The operation and control of the radiator gas has evolved over years with continuous improvements. We report on the experience gained in the 20 year-long operation of perfluorobutane as COMPASS RICH radiator. Very accurate values for the radiator gas refractive index are needed for high-performance particle identification. The procedure has evolved over years and the one presently in use, which provides refractive index estimate at the 1 ppm level, is discussed. Perfluorobutane procurement is becoming challenging, and the minimization of material waste is now a priority for the protection of the environment. Commercially available perfluorobutane needs dedicated filtering before usage and typical material losses in the filtering procedure were around 30%. Recent efforts allowed us to reduce them to about 5%. A potential alternative to fluorocarbon radiators in gaseous RICHes is also presented.

Higgs associated production with a vector decaying to two fermions in the geoSMEFT

We present the inclusive calculations of a Higgs boson produced in associated with massive vector bosons in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) to order 1/$\Lambda^4$ for the 13 TeV LHC. The calculations include the decay of the vector boson into massless constituents and are done using the geometric formulation of the SMEFT supplemented by the relevant dimension eight operators not included in the geoSMEFT. We include some discussion of distributions to motivate how detailed collider and experimental searches for SMEFT signals could be improved.

The drastic effect of the impurity scattering on the electronic and superconducting properties of Cu-doped FeSe

Non-magnetic impurities in iron-based superconductors can provide an important tool to understand the pair symmetry and they can influence significantly the transport and the superconducting behaviour. Here, we present a study of the role of strong impurity potential in the Fe plane, induced by Cu substitution, on the electronic and superconducting properties of single crystals of FeSe. The addition of Cu quickly suppresses both the nematic and superconducting states, and increases the residual resistivity due to enhanced impurity scattering. Using magnetotransport data up to 35 T for a small amount of Cu impurity, we detect a significant reduction in the mobility of the charge carriers by a factor of ~3. While the electronic conduction is strongly disrupted by Cu substitution, we identify additional signatures of anisotropic scattering which manifest in linear resistivity at low temperatures and $H^{1.6}$ dependence of magnetoresistance. The suppression of superconductivity by Cu substitution is consistent with a sign-changing $s_{\pm}$ order parameter. Additionally, in the presence of compressive strain, the superconductivity is enhanced, similar to FeSe.

Production of vector mesons in the String+${}^3P_0$ model of polarized quark fragmentation

The production of vector mesons in the fragmentation process of polarized quarks is studied within the recursive String+${}^3P_0$ model, improving a previous version of the model in which the production of pseudoscalar mesons only was considered. Two types of couplings of the vector meson to quarks are introduced, their coupling constants being the additional free parameters of the model. The angular distribution of the decay products of the polarized vector meson is deduced from the spin density matrix of the meson and the spin information is propagated along the fragmentation chain taking into account the entanglement of spin states. The new model is implemented in a stand alone Monte Carlo program utilized to investigate in detail kinematic distributions and transverse spin asymmetries. The sensitivity of these observables to the new free parameters is discussed and the Monte Carlo results are compared with experimental data on transverse spin asymmetries.

MPGD-based photon detectors for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1 and beyond

COMPASS is a fixed target experiment at CERN SPS aimed to study hadron structure and spectroscopy. Hadron identification in the momentum range between $3$ and $55 GeV/c$ is provided by a large gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter, RICH-1. To cope with the challenges imposed by the new physics program of COMPASS, RICH-1 has been upgraded by replacing four MWPC-based photon detectors with newly developed MPGD-based photon detectors. The architecture of the novel detectors is a hybrid combination of two layers of THGEMs and a Micromegas. The top of the first THGEM is coated with CsI acting as a reflective photo-cathode. The anode is segmented in pads capacitively coupled to the APV-25 based readout. The new hybrid detectors have been commissioned during the 2016 COMPASS data taking and stably operated during the 2017 run. In this paper design, construction, operation and performance aspects of the novel photon detectors for COMPASS RICH-1 are discussed.

The MPGD-Based Photon Detectors for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1

After pioneering gaseous detectors of single photon for RICH applications using CsI solid state photocathodes in MWPCs within the RD26 collaboration and by the constructions for the RICH detector of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS, in 2016 we have upgraded COMPASS RICH by novel gaseous photon detectors based on MPGD technology. Four novel photon detectors, covering a total active area of 1.5~m$^2$, have been installed in order to cope with the challenging efficiency and stability requirements of the COMPASS physics programme. They are the first application in an experiment of MPGD-based single photon detectors. All aspects of the upgrade are presented, including engineering, mass production, quality assessment and performance. Perspectives for further developments in the field of gaseous single photon detectors are also indicated.

The high voltage system with pressure and temperature corrections for the novel MPGD-based photon detectors of COMPASS RICH-1

The novel MPGD-based photon detectors of COMPASS RICH-1 consist of large-size hybrid MPGDs with multi-layer architecture including two layers of Thick-GEMs and a bulk resistive MicroMegas. The top surface of the first THGEM is coated with a CsI film which also acts as photo-cathode. These detectors have been successfully in operation at COMPASS since 2016. Concerning bias-voltage supply, the Thick-GEMs are segmented in order to reduce the energy released in case of occasional discharges, while the MicroMegas anode is segmented into pads individually biased with positive voltage while the micromesh is grounded. In total, there are about ten different electrode types and more than 20000 electrodes supplied by more than 100 HV channels, where appropriate correlations among the applied voltages are required for the correct operation of the detectors. Therefore, a robust control system is mandatory, implemented by a custom designed software package, while commercial power supply units are used. This sophisticated control system allows to protect the detectors against errors by the operator, to monitor and log voltages and currents at 1 Hz rate, and automatically react to detector misbehaviour. In addition, a voltage compensation system has been developed to automatically adjust the biasing voltage according to environmental pressure and temperature variations, to achieve constant gain over time. This development answers to a more general need. In fact, voltage compensation is always a requirement for the stability of gaseous detectors and its need is enhanced in multi-layer ones. In this paper, the HV system and its performance are described in details, as well as the stability of the novel MPGD-based photon detectors during the physics data taking at COMPASS.

A simplified recursive ${}^3P_0$ model for the fragmentation of polarized quarks

We revisit our recursive model for the fragmentation of polarized quarks based on the string+${}^3P_0$ mechanism of $q\bar{q}$ pair creation. We make a different choice for one input function of the model that simplifies the implementation in a Monte Carlo program. No new parameters are introduced, and the relevant results are the same apart from the suppression of the spin-independent correlations between successive quarks. In addition, the present version is more suitable for an interface with external event generators. The theoretical aspects and the simulation results obtained with a stand alone program are discussed in detail and compared with those of the previous version of the model.

Transversity distributions from difference asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS

In recent years information on the transversity distribution $h_1$ has been obtained combining the Collins asymmetry results from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data on transversely polarized nucleon targets with the information on the fragmentation function of a transversely polarized quark from the asymmetries measured in $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadrons. An alternative method was proposed long time ago, which does not require the $e^+e^-$ data, but allows one to get ratios of the $u$ and $d$ quark transversity distributions from the SIDIS data alone. The method utilizes the ratio of the difference of the Collins asymmetries of positively and negatively charged hadrons produced on transversely polarized proton and deuteron targets. We have applied this method to the COMPASS proton and deuteron data, and extracted the ratio $h_1^d/h_1^u$. The results are compared to those obtained in a previous point--by--point extraction based both on SIDIS and $e^+e^-$ data.

The Hybrid MPGD-based photon detectors of COMPASS RICH-1

Novel gaseous detectors of single photons for RICH applications have been developed and installed on COMPASS RICH-1 in 2016. They have a hybrid architecture consisting of two staggered THGEM layers (one equipped with a CsI photoconverting layer) and a bulk Micromegas; they cover a total area of 1.4 squared meters and operate stably and efficiently. They provide a single photon angular resolution of ~ 1.8 mrad and about 10 detected photons per ring at saturation. The main aspects of their construction and commissioning, their characterization and performance figures are presented.
