Electrostatic models for zeros of polynomials: old, new, and some open problems

We give a survey concerning both very classical and recent results on the electrostatic interpretation of the zeros of some well-known families of polynomials, and the interplay between these models and the asymptotic distribution of their zeros when the degree of the polynomials tends to infinity. The leading role is played by the differential equation satisfied by these polynomials. Some new developments, applications and open problems are presented.

On Extensions of a Theorem of Baxter

We combine the Riemann-Hilbert approach with the techniques of Banach algebras to obtain an extension of Baxter's Theorem for polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. This is accomplished by using the link between the negative Fourier coefficients of the scattering function and the coefficients in the recurrence formula satisfied by these polynomials.

Shannon entropy of symmetric Pollaczek polynomials

We discuss the asymptotic behavior (as $n\to \infty$) of the entropic integrals $$ E_n= - \int_{-1}^1 \log \big(p^2_n(x) \big) p^2_n(x) w(x) d x, $$ and $$ F_n = -\int_{-1}^1 \log (p_n^2(x)w(x)) p_n^2(x) w(x) dx, $$ when $w$ is the symmetric Pollaczek weight on $[-1,1]$ with main parameter $λ\geq 1$, and $p_n$ is the corresponding orthonormal polynomial of degree $n$. It is well known that $w$ does not belong to the Szegő class, which implies in particular that $E_n\to -\infty$. For this sequence we find the first two terms of the asymptotic expansion. Furthermore, we show that $F_n \to \log (π)-1$, proving that this ``universal behavior'' extends beyond the Szegő class. The asymptotics of $E_n$ has also a curious interpretation in terms of the mutual energy of two relevant sequences of measures associated with $p_n$'s.

Szegő orthogonal polynomials with respect to an analytic weight: canonical representation and strong asymptotics

We provide a representation in terms of certain canonical functions for a sequence of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a weight that is strictly positive and analytic on the unit circle. These formulas yield a complete asymptotic expansion for these polynomials, valid uniformly in the whole complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain some results about the distribution of zeros of these polynomials. The main technique is the steepest descent analysis of Deift and Zhou, based on the matrix Riemann-Hilbert characterization proposed by Fokas, Its and Kitaev.

Riemann-Hilbert analysis for Jacobi polynomials orthogonal on a single contour

Classical Jacobi polynomials $P_{n}^{(α,β)}$, with $α, β>-1$, have a number of well-known properties, in particular the location of their zeros in the open interval $(-1,1)$. This property is no longer valid for other values of the parameters; in general, zeros are complex. In this paper we study the strong asymptotics of Jacobi polynomials where the real parameters $α_n,β_n$ depend on $n$ in such a way that $$ \lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{α_{n}}{n}=A, \quad \lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{β_{n}}{n}=B, $$ with $A,B \in \mathbb{R}$. We restrict our attention to the case where the limits $A,B$ are not both positive and take values outside of the triangle bounded by the straight lines A=0, B=0 and $A+B+2=0$. As a corollary, we show that in the limit the zeros distribute along certain curves that constitute trajectories of a quadratic differential. The non-hermitian orthogonality relations for Jacobi polynomials with varying parameters lie in the core of our approach; in the cases we consider, these relations hold on a single contour of the complex plane. The asymptotic analysis is performed using the Deift-Zhou steepest descent method based on the Riemann-Hilbert reformulation of Jacobi polynomials.

Computation of the entropy of polynomials orthogonal on an interval

We give an effective method to compute the entropy for polynomials orthogonal on a segment of the real axis that uses as input data only the coefficients of the recurrence relation satisfied by these polynomials. This algorithm is based on a series expression for the mutual energy of two probability measures naturally connected with the polynomials. The particular case of Gegenbauer polynomials is analyzed in detail. These results are applied also to the computation of the entropy of spherical harmonics, important for the study of the entropic uncertainty relations as well as the spatial complexity of physical systems in central potentials.

Strong asymptotics for Jacobi polynomials with varying nonstandard parameters

Strong asymptotics on the whole complex plane of a sequence of monic Jacobi polynomials $P_n^{(α_n, β_n)}$ is studied, assuming that $$ \lim_{n\to\infty} \frac{α_n}{n}=A, \qquad \lim_{n\to\infty} \frac{β_n}{n}=B, $$ with $A$ and $B$ satisfying $ A > -1$, $ B>-1$, $A+B < -1$. The asymptotic analysis is based on the non-Hermitian orthogonality of these polynomials, and uses the Deift/Zhou steepest descent analysis for matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems. As a corollary, asymptotic zero behavior is derived. We show that in a generic case the zeros distribute on the set of critical trajectories $Γ$ of a certain quadratic differential according to the equilibrium measure on $Γ$ in an external field. However, when either $α_n$, $β_n$ or $α_n+β_n$ are geometrically close to $\Z$, part of the zeros accumulate along a different trajectory of the same quadratic differential.

Asymptotic upper bounds for the entropy of orthogonal polynomials in the Szegő class

We give an asymptotic upper bound as $n\to\infty$ for the entropy integral $$E_n(w)= -\int p_n^2(x)\log (p_n^2(x))w(x)dx,$$ where $p_n$ is the $n$th degree orthonormal polynomial with respect to a weight $w(x)$ on $[-1,1]$ which belongs to the Szegő class. We also study two functionals closely related to the entropy integral. First, their asymptotic behavior is completely described for weights $w$ in the Bernstein class. Then, as for the entropy, we obtain asymptotic upper bounds for these two functionals when $w(x)$ belongs to the Szegő class. In each case, we give conditions for these upper bounds to be attained.

Orthogonality of Jacobi polynomials with general parameters

In this paper we study the orthogonality conditions satisfied by Jacobi polynomials $P_n^{(α,β)}$ when the parameters $α$ and $β$ are not necessarily $>-1$. We establish orthogonality on a generic closed contour on a Riemann surface. Depending on the parameters, this leads to either full orthogonality conditions on a single contour in the plane, or to multiple orthogonality conditions on a number of contours in the plane. In all cases we show that the orthogonality conditions characterize the Jacobi polynomial $P_n^{(α, β)}$ of degree $n$ up to a constant factor.
