Adsorption of molecular gases on porous materials in the SAFT-VR approximation

A simple molecular thermodynamic approach is applied to the study of the adsorption of gases of chain molecules on solid surfaces. We use a model based on the Statistical Associating Fluid Theory for Variable Range (SAFT-VR) potentials [A. Gil-Villegas, A. Galindo, P. J. Whitehead, S. J. Mills, G. Jackson, A. N. Burgess, J. Chem. Phys. 106 (1997) 4168] that we extend by including a quasi-two-dimensional approximation to describe the adsorption properties of this type of real gases [A. Martinez, M. Castro, C. McCabe, A. Gil-Villegas, J. Chem. Phys. 126 (2007) 074707]. The model is applied to ethane, ethylene, propane, and carbon dioxide adsorbed on activated carbon and silica gel, which are porous media of significant industrial interest. We show that the adsorption isotherms obtained by means of the present SAFT-VR modeling are in fair agreement with the experimental results provided in the literature

Radiative corrections to the three-body region of the Dalitz plot of baryon semileptonic decays with angular correlation between polarized emitted baryons and charged leptons

We have calculated the radiative corrections to the Dalitz plot of baryon semileptonic decays with angular correlation between polarized emitted baryons and charged leptons. This work covers both charged and neutral decaying baryons and is restricted to the so-called three-body region of the Dalitz plot. Also it is specialized at the center-of-mass frame of the emitted baryon. We have considered terms up to order (alpha/pi)(q/M_1)^0, where q is the momentum-transfer and M_1 is the mass of the decaying baryon, and neglected terms of order (alpha/pi)(q/M_1)^n$ for n >= 1. The expressions displayed are ready to obtain numerical results, suitable for model-independent experimental analyses.

Width of Shape Resonances for Non Globally Analytic Potentials

We consider the semiclassical Schroedinger operator with a "well in an island" potential, on which we assume smoothness only, except near infinity. We give the asymptotic expansion of the imaginary part of the shape resonance at the bottom of the well. This is a generalization of a result by Helffer and Sjoestrand in the globally analytic case. We use an almost analytic extension in order to continue the WKB solution coming from the well beyond the caustic set, and, for the justification of the accuracy of this approximation, we develop some refined microlocal arguments in h-dependent small regions.

The use of cosmic muons in detecting heterogeneities in large volumes

The muon intensity attenuation method to detect heterogeneities in large matter volumes is analyzed. Approximate analytical expressions to estimate the collection time and the signal to noise ratio, are proposed and validated by Monte Carlo simulations. Important parameters, including point spread function and coordinate reconstruction uncertainty are also estimated using Monte Carlo simulations.

Precision radiative corrections to the semileptonic Dalitz plot with angular correlation between polarized decaying baryon and emitted charged lepton: Effects of the four-body region

Analytical radiative corrections of order (alpha/pi)(q/M) are calculated for the four-body region of the Dalitz plot of baryon semileptonic decays when the s1.l correlation is present. Once the final result is available, it is possible to exhibit it in terms of the corresponding final result of the three-body region following a set of simple changes in the latter, except for a few exceptions. We cover two cases, a charged and a neutral polarized decaying baryon.

Precision radiative corrections to the Dalitz plot of baryon semileptonic decays including the spin-momentum correlation of the decaying baryon and the emitted charged lepton

We calculate the radiative corrections to the angular correlation between the polarization of the decaying baryon and the direction of the emitted charged lepton in the semileptonic decays of spin one-half baryons to order (α/π)(q/M_1). The final results are presented, first, with the triple integration of the bremsstrahlung photon ready to be performed numerically and, second, in an analytical form. A third presentation of our results in the form of numerical arrays of coefficients to be multiplied on the quadratic products of form factors is discussed. This latter may be the most practical one to use in Monte Carlo simulations. A series of crosschecks is performed. The results are useful in the analysis of the Dalitz plot of precision experiments involving light and heavy quarks and is not compromised to fixing the form factors at predetermined values. It is assumed that the real photons are kinematically discriminated. Otherwise, our results have a general model-independent applicability.

The role of polarized positrons and electrons in revealing fundamental interactions at the Linear Collider

The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.

Numerical precision radiative corrections to the Dalitz plot of light and heavy quark unpolarized baryon semileptonic decays. The cases Xi^0 \to Sigma^+ e \barν and Λ_c^+ \to Λe^+ ν

We propose and discuss a numerical use of our previous precision results for the radiative corrections to unpolarized spin one-half baryon semileptonic decays, which is not compromised to fixing the form factors at prescribed values. We present various crosschecks and comparisons with other results available in the literature of such analytical radiative corrections. Our analysis, however, is general and applies to all charge assignments to the baryons allowed by heavy quarks. The procedure is exemplified with the processes Ξ^0 \to Σ^+ e\barν and Λ_c^+ \to Λe^+ ν.

Numerical precision radiative corrections to the Dalitz plot of baryon semileptonic decays including the spin-momentum correlation of the decaying and emitted baryons

We calculate the radiative corrections to the angular correlation between the polarization of the decaying and the direction of the emitted spin one-half baryons in the semileptonic decay mode. The final results are presented, first, with the triple integration of the bremsstrahlung photon ready to be performed numerically and, second, in an analytical form. A third presentation of our results in the form of numerical arrays of coefficients to be multiplied by the quadratic products of form factors is discussed. This latter may be the most practical one to use in Monte Carlo simulations. A series of crosschecks is performed. Previous results to order (alpha/pi)(q/M_1) for the decays of unpolarized baryons are reviewed, too, where q is the momentum transfer and M_1 is the mass of the decaying baryon. This paper is self-contained and organized to make it accessible and reliable in the analysis of the Dalitz plot of precision experiments involving heavy quarks and is not compromised to fixing the form factors at predetermined values. It is assumed that the real photons are kinematically discriminated. Otherwise, our results have a general model-independent applicability.

Radiative corrections to all charge assignments of heavy quark baryon semileptonic decays

In semileptonic decays of spin-1/2 baryons containing heavy quarks up to six charge assignments for the baryons and lepton are possible. We show that the radiative corrections to four of these possibilities can be directly obtained from the final results of the two possibilities previously studied. There is no need to recalculate integrals over virtual or real photon momentum or any traces.

Radiative corrections to the semileptonic Dalitz plot with angular correlation between polarized decaying and emitted hyperons: effects of the four-body region

We obtain a model-independent expression for the complete Dalitz plot of semileptonic decays of polarized hyperons, which includes both the three-body and the four-body regions. We calculate radiative corrections to order alpha, neglecting terms of order alpha q/(pi M_1), where q is the four-momentum transfer and M_1 is the mass of the decaying hyperon. Our results exhibit explicitly the correlation between the emitted hyperon three-momentum and the spin of the decaying hyperon. This allows us to obtain the corresponding radiative corrections to the integrated emitted hyperon spin-asymmetry coefficient. Our formulas are valid for charged as well as for neutral decaying hyperons and are appropriate for model-independent experimental analysis whether the real photon is discriminated or not.

29-Si NMR and Hidden Order in URu2Si2

We present new 29-Si NMR spectra in URu2Si2 for varying temperature T, and external field H. On lowering T, the systematics of the low-field lineshape and width reveal an extra component (lambda) to the linewidth below T_N ~ 17 K not observed previously. We find that lambda is magnetic-field independent and dominates the low-field lineshape for all orientations of H with respect to the tetragonal c axis. The behavior of lambda indicates a direct relationship between the 29-Si spin and the transition at T_N, but it is inconsistent with a coupling of the nuclei to static antiferromagnetic order/disorder of the U-spin magnetization. This leads us to conjecture that lambda is due to a coupling of 29-Si to the system's hidden-order parameter. A possible coupling mechanism involving charge degrees of freedom and indirect nuclear spin/spin interactions is proposed. We also propose further experiments to test for the existence of this coupling mechanism.

Time Aperiodic Perturbations of Integrable Hamiltonian Systems

We consider a Hamiltonian $H=H^{0}(p)+κH^{1}(p,q,t)$, $(p,q)\in {\mathbb{R}}^{n} \times {\mathbb{T}}^n$, $t\in{\mathbb{R}}$ where $κ\in {\mathbb{R}}$ is a small perturbation parameter and $p$, $q$ are the action and angle variables respectively. The Hamiltonian generates an autonomous vector field obtained by extending the phase space making $t$ a dependent variable and adding its conjugate variable $τ$. In this paper we look at a time aperiodic perturbation $H^{1}(p,q,t)$ which tends as $t\to \infty$ to either a time independent perturbation or a time quasiperiodic perturbation and we prove a KAM-type theorem. Extending the phase space results in the preservation under a small enough perturbation of cylinders of the extended autonomous system rather than the usual tori. To prove the theorem we transform the Hamiltonian $H$ to a normal form which depends on fewer angles, none if possible. This transformation is done via a near identity canonical transformation. The canonical transformation is constructed using the Lie series formalism and by solving for a generating function. Because of the aperiodic time dependence, the usual Fourier series methods used to obtain the generating function no longer apply. Instead, we use Fourier transform methods to solve for the generating function and make use of an isoenergetic non-degeneracy condition which results in a shift of frequencies associated with each cylinder.

Radiative corrections to the semileptonic Dalitz plot with angular correlation between polarized decaying hyperons and emitted charged leptons

We obtain a model-independent expression for the Dalitz plot of semileptonic decays of polarized hyperons including radiative corrections to order alpha and neglecting terms of order (alpha q)/(pi M_1), where q is the four-momentum transfer and M_1 is the mass of the decaying hyperon. We specialize our results to exhibit the correlation between the charged-lepton momentum and the spin of the decaying hyperon. We present results for the three-body region of the Dalitz plot and for the complete Dalitz plot (which includes the four-body region). From these results we also obtain the corresponding radiative corrections to the integrated lepton spin-asymmetry coefficient. Our formulas are valid for charged as well as for neutral decaying hyperons and are appropriate for model-independent experimental analysis whether the real photon is discriminated or not.

Addendum to: Radiative corrections to the Dalitz plot of semileptonic decays of neutral baryons with light or charm quarks

We show that the radiative corrections containing terms up to order $αq / πM_1$ for unpolarized semileptonic decays of baryons with positron emission can be obtained by simply reversing the sign of the axial-vector form factors in the corresponding final expressions of such decays with electron emission. This rule is valid regardless of the final kinematical variables chosen and of the particular Lorentz frame in which the final results are required.

Ergodic Properties of Infinite Harmonic Crystals: an Analytic Approach

We give through pseudodifferential operator calculus a proof that the quantum dynamics of a class of infinite harmonic crystals becomes ergodic and mixing with respect to the quantum Gibbs measure if the classical infinite dynamics is respectively ergodic and mixing with respect to the classical infinite Gibbs measure. The classical ergodicity and mixing properties are recovered as $\hbar\to 0$, and the infinitely many particles limits of the quantum Gibbs averages are proved to be the averages over a classical infinite Gibbs measure of the symbols generating the quantum observables under Weyl quantization.
