Magnetic domains reconfiguration on the Fe3O4(110) surface across the Verwey transition by Spin-Polarized Low-Energy Electron Microscopy

We have studied the (110) surface of Fe$_3$O$_4$ single crystals by means of spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM). After preparation by sputtering and annealing a well defined reconstructed surface was achieved, composed of rows aligned in the [010] direction. By acquiring SPLEEM images along different spin directions the vector magnetization was mapped on the surface, both at room temperature and at a temperature well below the Verwey transition. At room temperature, domains were observed with their magnetization aligned along the two <111> bulk easy axes which are in the (110) surface plane. They presented 180$^\circ$, 71$^\circ$ and 109$^\circ$ N\'eel-type domain walls. Below the Verwey transition, the magnetization directions changed to regions where the magnetization was oriented along the in-plane [100] and [001] directions. Those observations can be interpreted as the presence of magnetized regions on the surface where the monoclinic $c$ axis is in-plane in the former, and regions where the $c$ is out-of-plane in an oblique direction in the latter. However, the magnetization was at all times within the surface plane, with no out-of-plane component detected.

CDW signatures in the electronic structure of LaSb2 at 13 K and metal-insulator transition

Light rare-earth antimonide LaSb2 is a material susceptible to nesting and exhibits a Charge Density Wave (CDW) at 355 K as well as superconductivity below 1.2 K. In the seek for additional CDW transitions, we have studied the temperature-dependent of LaSb2 at 200 and 13 K and infer CDW manifestations by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. ARPES measurements at 200 K show a metallic system while it appears to be semiconducting at 13 K, at odds with existing resistivity measurements. At 13 K, ARPES shows the band folding of the inner Fermi surface pockets, with considerable spectral weight on the folded band. We find a nesting vector at q = 0.25$\pm$0.02 Å -1. In addition, we observe Umklapps of other bands due to the onset of the new periodicity, together with a semiconducting behavior in the whole reciprocal space. Calculations demonstrate that the folded band is associated with the La-Sb layer and that in-plane distortion is the most probable structural modification in the system, probably affecting the whole unit cell.

Measuring the magnetization of three monolayer thick Co islands and films by X-ray dichroism

Co islands and films are characterized by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM). The spatial resolution capabilties of the technique together with atomic growth control permit obtaining perfectly flat triangular islands with a given thickness (3 ML), very close to an abrupt spin-reorientation transition. The magnetic domain configurations are found to depend on island size: while small islands can be magnetized in a single-domain state, larger islands show more complex patterns. Furthermore, the magnetization pattern of the larger islands presents a common chirality. By means of dichroic spectro-microscopy at the Co L absorption edges, an experimental estimate of the ratio of the spin- and orbital magnetic moment for three monolayer thick films is obtained.

Observation of a Mott insulating ground state for Sn/Ge(111) at low temperature

We report an investigation on the properties of 0.33 ML of Sn on Ge(111) at temperatures down to 5 K. Low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy show that the (3x3) phase formed at 200 K, reverts to a new (root-3xroot-3)R30 phase below 30 K. The vertical distortion characteristic of the (3x3) phase is lost across the phase transition. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments show that concomitantly with the structural phase transition, a metal-insulator phase transition takes place. In agreement with theoretical predictions, the (root-3xroot-3)R30 ground state is interpreted as the experimental realization of a Mott insulator for a narrow half-filled band in a two-dimensional triangular lattice.
