General Flavor Blind MSSM and CP Violation

We study the implications on flavor changing neutral current and CP violating processes in the context of supersymmetric theories without a new flavor structure (flavor blind supersymmetry). The low energy parameters are determined by the running of the soft breaking terms from the grand unified scale with SUSY phases consistent with the EDM constraints. We find that the CP asymmetry in b --> s gamma can reach large values potentially measurable at B factories, especially in the low BR(b --> s gamma) region. We perform a fit of the unitarity triangle including all the relevant observables. In this case, no sizeable deviations from the SM expectations are found. Finally we analyze the SUSY contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon pointing out its impact on the b --> s gamma CP asymmetry and on the SUSY spectrum including chargino and stop masses.

New physics in CP violation experiments

CP violation plays a privileged role in our quest for new physics beyond the electroweak standard model (SM). In the SM the violation of CP in the weak interactions has a single source: the phase of the quark mixing matrix (the CKM matrix, for Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa). Most extensions of the SM exhibit new sources of CP violation. For instance, the truly minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM (CMSSM) has two new phases in addition to the CKM phase. Given that CP violation is so tiny in the kaon system, is still largely unexplored in B physics and is negligibly small in the electric dipole moments, it is clear that new physics may have a good chance to manifest some departure from the SM in this particularly challenging class of rare phenomena. On the other hand, it is also apparent that CP violation generally represents a major constraint on any attempt at model building beyond the SM. In this review we tackle these two sides of the relation between CP violation and new physics. Our focus will be on the potentialities to use CP violation as a probe on Supersymmetric (SUSY) extensions of the SM. We wish to clarify the extent to which such indirect signals for SUSY are linked to a fundamental theoretical issue: is there a relation between the mechanism that originates the whole flavor structure and the mechanism that is responsible for the breaking of supersymmetry? Different ways to answer this question lead to quite different expectations for CP violation in B physics.

Supersymmetric origin of a low $a_{J/psi}$ CP asymmetry

We show that general Minimal Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model (MSSM) allow for a CP asymmetry in B --> J/psi K(S) well bellow the SM expectations with dominant Supersymmetric contributions to epsilon_K and epsilon'/epsilon. Indeed, we provide an explicit example of an MSSM with non-universal soft breaking terms fully consistent with the low results of this asymmetry recently announced by Babar and Belle collaborations.

Kaon vs. Bottom: Where to look for a general MSSM?

We analyze CP violation and Flavor Changing effects in a general Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with arbitrary non-universal soft-breaking terms. We show that, in this conditions, large FCNC effects are naturally expected in the Kaon system, even in the absence of quark-squark flavor misalignment. On the other hand, the B system is only sensitive to new supersymmetric contributions if the non-universality implies, not only different soft term for the three generations but also the presence of a quark-squark misalignment much larger that the corresponding CKM mixing. The only exception to this rule are processes where the chirality changing contributions proportional to tan beta are leading (for instance b -> s gamma).

Baryogenesis vs. proton stability in theories with extra dimensions

We propose a new scenario of baryogenesis in the context of theories with large extra dimensions. The baryon number is almost conserved at zero temperature by means of a localization mechanism recently analyzed by Arkani-Hamed and Schmaltz: leptons and quarks are located at two slightly displaced positions in the extra space, and this naturally suppresses the interactions which ``convert'' the latter in the former. We show that this is expected to be no longer true when finite temperature effects are taken into account. The whole scenario is first presented in its generality, without referring to the bulk geometry or to the specific mechanism which may generate the baryon asymmetry. As an example, we then focus on a baryogenesis model reminiscent of GUT baryogenesis. The Sakharov out of equilibrium condition is satisfied by assuming nonthermal production of the bosons that induce baryon number violation.

Delta M_K and epsilon_K in SUSY at the Next-to-Leading order

We perform a Next-to-Leading order analysis of Delta S=2 processes beyond the Standard Model. Combining the recently computed NLO anomalous dimensions and the B parameters of the most general Delta S=2 effective Hamiltonian, we give an analytic formula for Delta M_K and epsilon_K in terms of the Wilson coefficients at the high energy scale. This expression can be used for any extension of the Standard Model with new heavy particles. Using this result, we consider gluino-mediated contributions to Delta S=2 transitions in general SUSY models and provide an improved analysis of the constraints on off-diagonal mass terms between the first two generations of down-type squarks. Finally, we improve the constraints on R-violating couplings from Delta M_K and epsilon_K.

CP violation as a probe of flavor origin in Supersymmetry

We address the question of the relation between supersymmetry breaking and the origin of flavor in the context of CP violating phenomena. We prove that, in the absence of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase, a general Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with all possible phases in the soft-breaking terms, but no new flavor structure beyond the usual Yukawa matrices, can never give a sizeable contribution to $ε_K$, $ε^\prime/ε$ or hadronic $B^0$ CP asymmetries. Observation of supersymmetric contributions to CP asymmetries in B decays would hint at a non-flavor blind mechanism of supersymmetry breaking.

Flavor Structure and Supersymmetric CP-Violation

In this talk, we address the possibility of finding supersymmetry through indirect searches in the K and B systems. We prove that, in the absence of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase, a general Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with all possible phases in the soft-breaking terms, but no new flavor structure beyond the usual Yukawa matrices, can never give a sizeable contribution to $ε_K$, $ε^\prime/ε$ or hadronic B^0 CP asymmetries. However, Minimal Supersymmetric models with additional flavor structures in the soft-supersymmetry breaking terms can produce large deviations from the Standard Model predictions. Hence, observation of supersymmetric contributions to CP asymmetries in B decays would be the first sign of the existence of new flavor structures in the soft-terms and would hint at a non-flavor blind mechanism of supersymmetry breaking.

CP conserving constraints on Supersymmetric CP violation in the MSSM

We address the following question. Take the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) with the two CP violating SUSY phases different from zero, and neglect the bound coming from the electric dipole moment of the neutron (EDM): is it possible to fully account for CP violation in the kaon and B systems using only the SUSY contributions with vanishing CKM phase? We show that the ${BR}(B\to X_{s} γ)$ constraint, though CP conserving, forces a negative answer to the above question. This implies that, even in the regions of the CMSSM where a cancellation of different contributions to the EDM allows for large SUSY phases, it is not possible to exploit the SUSY phases to fully account for observable CP violation. Hence to have sizeable SUSY contributions to CP violation, one needs new flavor structures in the sfermion mass matrices beyond the usual CKM matrix.

B -> Xs l+ l- decays in supersymmetry

We study the semileptonic decays B -> Xs e+ e- and B -> Xs mu+ mu- in generic supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. SUSY effects are parameterized using the mass insertion approximation formalism and differences with the Constrained MSSM results are pointed out. Constraints on SUSY contributions coming from other processes (e.g. b -> s photon) are taken into account. Chargino and gluino contributions to photon and Z-mediated decays are computed and non-perturbative corrections are considered. We find that the integrated branching ratios and the asymmetries can be strongly modified. Moreover, the behavior of the differential Forward-Backward asymmetry remarkably changes with respect to the Standard Model expectation.

Probing Supersymmetric Flavor Models with $ε'/ε$

We discuss the supersymmetric contribution to $ε'/ε$ in various supersymmetric flavor models. We find that in alignment models the supersymmetric contribution could be significant while in heavy squark models it is expected to be small. The situation is particularly interesting in models that solve the flavor problems by either of the above mechanisms and the remaining CP problems by means of approximate CP, that is, all CP violating phases are small. In such models, the standard model contributions cannot account for $ε'/ε$ and a failure of the supersymmetric contributions to do so would exclude the model. In models of alignment and approximate CP, the supersymmetric contributions can account for $ε'/ε$ only if both the supersymmetric model parameters and the hadronic parameters assume rather extreme values. Such models are then strongly disfavored by the $ε'/ε$ measurements. Models of heavy squarks and approximate CP are excluded.

Can unstable relics save pure Cold Dark Matter?

The standard CDM model fails to describe the power spectrum of fluctuations since it gives too much power at small scales. Among other possible improvements, it has been suggested that an agreement with observations can be achieved with the addition of a late decaying particle, through the injection of non-thermal radiation and the consequent increase of the horizon length at the equivalence time. We analyze the possibility of implementing this idea in some extensions of the electroweak standard model, discussing the cosmological and astrophysical bounds to which these schemes are subject.

Fully Supersymmetric CP Violation in K and B Systems

We analyze CP violation in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model with heavy scalar fermions of the first two generations. Neglecting intergenerational mixing in the sfemion mass matrices and thus considering only chargino, charged Higgs and W--boson diagrams we show that it is possible to fully account for CP violation in the kaon system even in the absence of the standard CKM phase. This opens new possibilities for large supersymmetric contributions to CP violation in the B system.

Real CP Violation

We propose a new mechanism called "real CP violation" to originate spontaneous CP violation. Starting with a CP conserving theory with scalar fields in the adjoint representation of a global or local non-abelian symmetry, we show that even though the VEV's of such scalars are real they give rise to a spontaneous violation of CP. We provide an illustrative example of how this new mechanism of CP violation can give rise to physically significant phases which produce a complex CKM mixing matrix. This mechanism may prove useful in string models with moduli in the adjoint representation as well as in tackling the strong CP problem.

Pre-LHC SUSY Searches: an Overview

We discuss the prospects for searches of low-energy supersymmetry in the time interval separating us from the advent of LHC. In this period of time "indirect" searches may play a very relevant role. We refer to manifestations of supersymmetry in flavour changing neutral current and CP violating phenomena and to signals of the lightest supersymmetric particle in searches of dark matter. In the first part of the talk we critically review the status of the minimal supersymmetric model to discuss the chances that direct and indirect supersymmetric searches may have before the LHC start. In the second part we point out what we consider to be the most promising grounds where departures from the standard model prediction may signal the presence of new physics, possibly of supersymmetric nature. We argue that the often invoked complementarity of direct and indirect searches of low-energy supersymmetry is becoming even more true in the pre-LHC era.

Two Lectures on FCNC and CP Violation in Supersymmetry

These two lectures constitute a reappraisal and an update of the status of the Flavour Changing Neutral Current (FCNC) and CP violation issues in supersymmetry. The first lecture discusses these points in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), while the second one provides an analysis in a generic low-energy supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. The goal of these lectures is twofold: on one hand we present a qualitative and quantitative discussion of the threat that FCNC and CP violation represent on supersymmetry model building; on the other hand, we point out how precious FCNC and CP violation may be in obtaining some signals of the presence of supersymmetry at low energy in the years that separate us from the advent of LHC physics. In particular, concerning this latter point, we emphasize and thoroughly analyze the role of experimental searches for rare B decays and CP violation in B physics.

Hybrid Inflation from Supersymmetric SU(5)

A scheme of hybrid inflation is considered in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model with an extra singlet. The relevant role of the cubic term in the adjoint representation in the renormalizable superpotential is pointed out in order to have a quite wide region of initial conditions compatible with inflation efficiency, monopole density and perturbations constraint.

CP Violation in Low-Energy SUSY

We discuss CP violation in the context of the minimal SUSY extension of the standard model as well as in a generic low-energy SUSY model. After analyzing the SUSY contributions to the observed CP violation in the kaon system, we emphasize the prospects for disentangling SUSY loop contributions from pure SM effects in B physics.
