Experimental evidence for an intermediate phase in the multiferroic YMnO3

We have studied YMnO$_{3}$ by high-temperature synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, and have carried out differential thermal analysis and dilatometry on a single crystal sample. These experiments show two phase transitions at about 1100K and 1350K, respectively. This demonstrates the existence of an intermediate phase between the room temperature ferroelectric and the high temperature centrosymmetric phase. This study identifies for the first time the different high-temperature phase transitions in YMnO$_{3}$.

Evidence for differentiation in the iron-helicoidal-chain in GdFe$_{3}$(BO$_{3}$)$_{4}$

We report on a single-crystal X-ray structure study of $GdFe_{3}(BO_{3})_{4}$ at room temperature and at T=90 K. At room temperature $GdFe_{3}(BO_{3})_{4}$ crystallizes in a trigonal space group R32 (No. 155), the same as found for other members of iron-borate family $RFe_{3}(BO_{3})_{4}$. At 90 K the structure of $GdFe_{3}(BO_{3})_{4}$ has transformed to the space group $P3_{1}2_{1}$ (No. 152). The low-temperature structure determination gives new insight into the weakly first-order structural phase transition at 156 K and into the related Raman phonon anomalies. The discovery of two inequivalent iron chains in the low temperature structure provide new point of view on the low-temperature magnetic properties.

Response: Spin-Singlet clusters in the ladder compound NaV2O5

This response on a Comment on Reference 2 discusses the space group Fmm2 determination of the low temperature structure of NaV2O5. We show that while conventional crystallography is consistent with 'zig-zag' charge ordering of half of the ladders, recent spectroscopic measurements suggest that the symmetry is lower than Fmm2. We suggest space group C2, consistent with full 'zig-zag' charge ordering of all the ladders.

Inversion symmetry in the spin-Peierls compound NaV2O5

At room-temperature NaV2O5 was found to have the centrosymmetric space group Pmmn. This space group implies the presence of only one kind of V site in contrast with previous reports of the non-centrosymmetric counterpart P21mn. This indicates a non-integer valence state of vanadium. Furthermore, this symmetry has consequences for the interpretation of the transition at 34 K, which was ascribed to a spin-Peierls transition of one dimensional chains of V4+.

Global and Local Measures of the Intrinsic Josephson Coupling in Tl2Ba2CuO6

The Intlerlayer Josephson coupling between the planes of Tl2Ba2CuO6 was determined using infrared spectroscopy and magnetic flux vortex imaging. These methods give a consistent value of $ω_J$= 28 cm$^{-1}$ which, when combined with the condensation energy produces a discrepancy of at least an order of magnitude with deductions based on the interlayer tunneling model.
