Experimental validation of a fast control-oriented, physics-informed surrogate model for plasma equilibrium reconstruction in the TCV tokamak

Magnetic equilibrium reconstruction provides the plasma state estimate required for real-time shape control in tokamaks. We present a fast, physics-informed neural network surrogate of the \texttt{liuqe} equilibrium reconstruction code \cite{liuqe1} for the TCV tokamak at EPFL, achieving inference times below 100~$\bm\mu$s and enabling 10~kHz shape control. The model is trained on around 10,000 TCV discharges spanning the full operational range of plasma shapes. Its modular branch/trunk architecture decouples magnetic measurement encoding from spatial coordinate processing, enabling physics-informed regularization via automatic differentiation of the predicted flux map. The surrogate has been compiled and deployed on the TCV real-time control system, and validated both offline and in real time against the models \texttt{liuqe-rt} and \texttt{lih}, showing comparable accuracy. Closed-loop performance assessed with the real-time software in-the-loop \texttt{fge} \cite{fge1} demonstrates control-equivalent behavior across multiple control strategies.

Unveiling the Molecular Driving Forces of Pollutant Extraction by Hydrophobic Eutectic Solvents

Hydrophobic eutectic solvents (HES) are emerging as sustainable alternatives to conventional organic solvents for the extraction of molecular pollutants from water. Yet, their selectivity remains poorly understood, hindering the predictive design of eutectic solvents beyond empirical success. Here, we present a multiscale strategy to rationalize and predict solute partitioning in HES. Focusing on bisphenol A (BPA) in trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO):menthol as a prototypical system, we combine monophasic and biphasic molecular dynamics with quantum energy decomposition of dominant solvation motifs. Our methodology captures the experimentally measured BPA spontaneous migration and thermodynamic stabilization in the HES phase but also identifies the microscopic origin of selectivity: cooperative hydrogen bonding couples to strong dispersion and polarization in the hydrophobic eutectic microenvironment. The robustness of our workflow paves the way for the predictive in-silico screening and design of HES formulations for green and sustainable applications.

Implementation of an ITER-relevant QP-based Current Limit Avoidance algorithm in the TCV tokamak

The problem of avoiding saturation of the coil currents is critical in large tokamaks with superconducting coils like ITER. Indeed, if the current limits are reached, a loss of control of the plasma may lead to a major disruption. Therefore, a Current Limit Avoidance (CLA) system is essential to operate safely. This paper provides the first experimental evidence that the online solution of a constrained quadratic optimization problem can offer a valid methodology to implement a CLA. Experiments are carried out on the Tokamak \`a Configuration Variable (TCV) at the Swiss Plasma Center, showing the effectiveness of the proposed approach and its suitability for real-time application in view of future reactors such as ITER.

Synchrotron-based UV resonance Raman scattering for investigating ionic liquid-water solutions

This work shows that bulk ionic liquids (ILs) and their water solution can be conveniently investigated by synchrotron-based UV resonance Raman (UVRR) spectroscopy. The main advantages of this technique for the investigation of the local structure and intermolecular interactions in imidazolium-based ILs are presented and discussed. The unique tunability of synchrotron source allows one to selectively enhance in the Raman spectra the vibrational signals arising from the imidazolium ring. Such signals showed good sensitivity to the modifications induced in the local structure of ILs by i) the change of anion and ii) the progressively longer alkyl chain substitution on the imidazolium ring. Moreover, some UVRR signals are specifically informative on the effect induced by addition of water on the strength of cation-anion H-bonds in IL-water solutions. All of these results corroborate the potentiality of UVRR to retrieve information on the intermolecular interactions in IL-water solutions, besides the counterpart obtained by employing on these systems the spontaneous Raman scattering technique.
