The S-matrix of the Faddeev-Reshetikhin Model, Diagonalizability and PT Symmetry

We study the question of diagonalizability of the Hamiltonian for the Faddeev-Reshetikhin (FR) model in the two particle sector. Although the two particle S-matrix element for the FR model, which may be relevant for the quantization of strings on $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$, has been calculated recently using field theoretic methods, we find that the Hamiltonian for the system in this sector is not diagonalizable. We trace the difficulty to the fact that the interaction term in the Hamiltonian violating Lorentz invariance leads to discontinuity conditions (matching conditions) that cannot be satisfied. We determine the most general quartic interaction Hamiltonian that can be diagonalized. This includes the bosonic Thirring model as well as the bosonic chiral Gross-Neveu model which we find share the same S-matrix. We explain this by showing, through a Fierz transformation, that these two models are in fact equivalent. In addition, we find a general quartic interaction Hamiltonian, violating Lorentz invariance, that can be diagonalized with the same two particle S-matrix element as calculated by Klose and Zarembo for the FR model. This family of generalized interaction Hamiltonians is not Hermitian, but is $PT$ symmetric. We show that the wave functions for this system are also $PT$ symmetric. Thus, the theory is in a $PT$ unbroken phase which guarantees the reality of the energy spectrum as well as the unitarity of the S-matrix.

The algebra of flat currents for the string on AdS_5 x S^5 in the light-cone gauge

We continue the program initiated in hep-th/0411200 and calculate the algebra of the flat currents for the string on AdS_5 x S^5 background in the light-cone gauge with kappa-symmetry fixed. We find that the algebra has a closed form and that the non-ultralocal terms come with a weight factor e^ϕ that depends on the radial AdS_5 coordinate. Based on results in two-dimensional sigma models coupled to gravity via the dilaton field, this suggests that the algebra of transition matrices in the present case is likely to be unambigous.

The Algebra of Transition Matrices for the AdS_5 x S^5 Superstring

We consider integrability properties of the superstring on $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ background and construct a new one parameter family of currents which satisfies the vanishing curvature condition. We present the Hamiltonian analysis for the sigma model action and determine the Poisson algebra of the transition matrices. We reveal the generalization of the $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ automorphism analogous to the sigma models defined on a symmetric space coset. A possible regularization scheme for the ambiguities present, which respects the generalized automorphism, is also discussed.

Monodromy, Duality and Integrability of Two Dimensional String Effective Action

In this talk, we show how the monodromy matrix, ${\hat{\cal M}}$, can be constructed for the two dimensional tree level string effective action. The pole structure of ${\hat{\cal M}}$ is derived using its factorizability property. It is shown that the monodromy matrix transforms non-trivially under the non-compact T-duality group, which leaves the effective action invariant and this can be used to construct the monodromy matrix for more complicated backgrounds starting from simpler ones. We construct, explicitly, ${\hat{\cal M}}$ for the exactly solvable Nappi-Witten model, both when B=0 and $B\neq 0$, where these ideas can be directly checked.

Duality and Integrability of Two Dimensional String Effective Action

We present a prescription for constructing the monodromy matrix, $\hat{\cal M}(ω)$, for $O(d,d)$ invariant string effective actions and derive its transformation properties under the $T$-duality group. This allows us to construct $\hat{\cal M}(ω)$ for new backgrounds, starting from known ones, which are related by $T$-duality. As an application, we derive the monodromy matrix for the exactly solvable Nappi-Witten model, both when B=0 and $B\neq 0$.

Duality, Monodromy and Integrability of Two Dimensional String Effective Action

The monodromy matrix, ${\hat{\cal M}}$, is constructed for two dimensional tree level string effective action. The pole structure of ${\hat{\cal M}}$ is derived using its factorizability property. It is found that the monodromy matrix transforms non-trivially under the non-compact T-duality group, which leaves the effective action invariant and this can be used to construct the monodromy matrix for more complicated backgrounds starting from simpler ones. We construct, explicitly, ${\hat{\cal M}}$ for the exactly solvable Nappi-Witten model, both when B=0 and $B\neq 0$, where these ideas can be directly checked. We consider well known charged black hole solutions in the heterotic string theory which can be generated by T-duality transformations from a spherically symmetric `seed' Schwarzschild solution. We construct the monodromy matrix for the Schwarzschild black hole background of the heterotic string theory.

Noncommutativity of Boundary Closed String Coordinates for an Open Membrane on p-Brane

We study the dynamics of an open membrane with a cylindrical topology, in the background of a constant three form. We use the action, due to Bergshoeff, London and Townsend, to study the noncommutativity properties of the boundary string coordinates. The constrained Hamiltonian formalism due to Dirac is used to derive the noncommutativity of coordinates. The chain of constraints is found to be finite for a suitable gauge choice.

Colliding String Waves and Duality

The collision of plane waves corresponding to massless states of closed string is considered in $D$-dimensional space-time. The reduced tree level effective action is known to be manifestly $O(d,d)$ invariant, $d$ being the number of transverse spatial dimensions in the collision process. We adopt a coset space reformulation of the effective two dimensional theory and discuss the relation of this process with classical integrable systems in two dimensions in the presence of gravity. We show how it is possible to generate new backgrounds for the scattering process, from known background solutions to the equations of motion, in the coset reformulation. We present explicit calculations for the case of four space-time dimensions as an illustrative example.

Quasiparticle Hall Transport of d-wave Superconductors in Vortex State

We present a theory of quasiparticle Hall transport in strongly type-II superconductors within their vortex state. We establish the existence of integer quantum spin Hall effect in clean unconventional $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductors in the vortex state from a general analysis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The spin Hall conductivity $σ^s_{xy}$ is shown to be quantized in units of $\frac{\hbar}{8π}$. This result does not rest on linearization of the BdG equations around Dirac nodes and therefore includes inter-nodal physics in its entirety. In addition, this result holds for a generic inversion-symmetric lattice of vortices as long as the magnetic field $B$ satisfies $H_{c1} \ll B \ll H_{c2}$. We then derive the Wiedemann-Franz law for the spin and thermal Hall conductivity in the vortex state. In the limit of $T \to 0$, the thermal Hall conductivity satisfies $κ_{x y}=\frac{4π^2}{3}(\frac{k_B}{\hbar})^2 T σ^s_{xy}$. The transitions between different quantized values of $σ^s_{xy}$ as well as relation to conventional superconductors are discussed.

Open Membranes, p-Branes and Noncommutativity of Boundary String Coordinates

We study the dynamics of an open membrane with a cylindrical topology, in the background of a constant three form, whose boundary is attached to p-branes. The boundary closed string is coupled to a two form potential to ensure gauge invariance. We use the action, due to Bergshoeff, London and Townsend, to study the noncommutativity properties of the boundary string coordinates. The constrained Hamiltonian formalism due to Dirac is used to derive the noncommutativity of coordinates. The chain of constraints is found to be finite for a suitable gauge choice, unlike the case of the static gauge, where the chain has an infinite sequence of terms. It is conjectured that the formulation of closed string field theory may necessitate introduction of a star product which is both noncommutative and nonassociative.

Quasiparticles and Vortices in Unconventional Superconductors

Quasiparticles in the vortex lattice of strongly type-II superconductors are investigated by means of a singular gauge transformation applied to the tight binding lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. We present a detailed derivation of the gauge invariant effective low energy Hamiltonian for the quasiparticle-vortex system and show how the physics of the "Doppler shift" and "Berry phase" can be incorporated at the Hamiltonian level by working in the singular gauge. In particular, we show that the "Berry phase" effect manifests itself in the effective Hamiltonian through a half-flux Aharonov-Bohm scattering of quasiparticles off vortices and stress the important role that this effect plays in the quasiparticle dynamics. Full numerical solutions in the regime of intermediate fields H_c1<<B<<H_c2 are presented for model superconductors with s-, p- and d-wave symmetries and with square and triangular vortex lattices. For s- and p-wave cases we obtain low energy bound states in the core, in agreement with the existing results. For d-wave case only extended quasiparticle states exist. We investigate in detail the nature of these extended states and provide comparison to the previous results within linearized ``Dirac fermion'' model. We also investigate internodal interference effects when vortex and ionic lattices have high degree of commensurability and discuss various specific choices for the singular gauge transformation.

Light-Cone Formulation of Super D2-Brane

The light-cone Hamiltonian approach is applied to the super D2-brane, and the equivalent area--preserving and U(1) gauge-invariant effective Lagrangian, which is quadratic in the U(1) gauge field, is derived. The latter is recognised to be that of the three-dimensional U(1) gauge theory, interacting with matter supermultiplets, in a special external induced supergravity metric and the gravitino field, depending on matter fields. The duality between this theory and 11d supermembrane theory is demonstrated in the light-cone gauge.

Representations and BPS states of 10+2 superalgebra

The 12d supersymmetry algebra is considered, and classification of BPS states for some canonical form of second-rank central charge is given. It is shown, that possible fractions of survived supersymmetry can be 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16 and 1/2, the values 3/8, 7/16 cannot be achieved in this way. The consideration of a special case of non-zero sixth-rank tensor charge also is included.

Light-Cone Formulation of D2-Brane

We apply the light-cone hamiltonian approach to D2-brane, and derive the equivalent gauge-invariant Lagrangian. The later appears to be that of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, interacting with matter fields, in the special external induced metric, depending on matter fields. The duality between this theory and 11d membrane is shown.
