On an equivariant version of the zeta function of a transformation

Earlier the authors offered an equivariant version of the classical monodromy zeta function of a G-invariant function germ with a finite group G as a power series with the coefficients from the Burnside ring of the group G tensored by the field of rational numbers. One of the main ingredients of the definition was the definition of the equivariant Lefschetz number of a G-equivariant transformation given by W.Lück and J.Rosenberg. Here we offer another approach to a definition of the equivariant Lefschetz number of a transformation and describe the corresponding notions of the equivariant zeta function. This zeta-function is a power series with the coefficients from the Burnside ring of the group G. We give an A'Campo type formula for the equivariant monodromy zeta function of a function germ in terms of a resolution. Finally we discuss orbifold versions of the Lefschetz number and of the monodromy zeta function corresponding to the two equivariant ones.

On piecewise isomorphism of some varieties

Two quasi-projective varieties are called piecewise isomorphic if they can be stratified into pairwise isomorphic strata. We show that the m-th symmetric power $S^m(C^n)$ of the complex affine space $C^n$ is piecewise isomorphic to $C^{mn}$ and the m-th symmetric power $S^m(CP^\infty)$ of the infinite dimensional complex projective space is piecewise isomorphic to the infinite dimensional Grassmannian $Gr(m,\infty)$.

On the power structure over the Grothendieck ring of varieties and its applications

We discuss the notion of a power structure over a ring and the geometric description of the power structure over the Grothendieck ring of complex quasi-projective varieties and show some examples of applications to generating series of classes of configuration spaces (for example, nested Hilbert schemes of J. Cheah) and wreath product orbifolds.

Classification of rational unicuspidal projective curves whose singularities have one Puiseux pair

It is a very old and interesting open problem to characterize those collections of embedded topological types of local plane curve singularities which may appear as singularities of a projective plane curve C of degree d. The goal of the present article is to give a complete (topological) classification of those cases when C is rational and it has a unique singularity which is locally irreducible (i.e. C is unicuspidal) with one Puiseux pair.

On rational cuspidal curves, open surfaces and local singularities

Let $C$ be an irreducible projective plane curve in the complex projective space ${\mathbb{P}}^2$. The classification of such curves, up to the action of the automorphism group $PGL(3,{\mathbb{C}})$ on ${\mathbb{P}}^2$, is a very difficult open problem with many interesting connections. The main goal is to determine, for a given $d$, whether there exists a projective plane curve of degree $d$ having a fixed number of singularities of given topological type. In this note we are mainly interested in the case when $C$ is a rational curve. The aim of this article is to present some of the old conjectures and related problems, and to complete them with some results and new conjectures from the recent work of the authors.

Superisolated Surface Singularities

In this survey, we review part of the theory of superisolated surface singularities (SIS) and its applications including some new and recent developments. The class of SIS singularities is, in some sense, the simplest class of germs of normal surface singularities. Namely, their tangent cones are reduced curves and the geometry and topology of the SIS singularities can be deduced from them. Thus this class \emph{contains}, in a canonical way, all the complex projective plane curve theory, which gives a series of nice examples and counterexamples. They were introduced by I. Luengo to show the non-smoothness of the $μ$-constant stratum and have been used to answer negatively some other interesting open questions. We review them and the new results on normal surface singularities whose link are rational homology spheres. We also discuss some positive results which have been proved for SIS singularities.

An exponential function on the set of varieties

Let $\cal R$ be either the Grothendieck semiring (semiring with multiplication) of complex algebraic varieties, or the Grothendieck ring of these varieties, or the Grothendieck ring localized by the class of the complex affine line. We introduce a construction which defines operations of taking powers of series over these (semi)rings. This means that, for a power series $A(t)=1+\sum\limits_{i=1}^\infty A_i t^i$ with the coefficients $A_i$ from $\cal R$ and for $M\in {\cal R}$, there is defined a series $(A(t))^M$ (with coefficients from $\cal R$ as well) so that all the usual properties of the exponential function hold.We also express in these terms the generating function of the Hilbert scheme of points (0-dimensional subschemes) on a surface.

On the topology of germs of meromorphic functions and applications

In a previous paper the authors elaborated notions and technique which could be applied to compute such invariants of polynomials as Euler characteristics of fibres and zeta-functions of monodromy transformations associated with a polynomial. Some crucial basic properties of the notions related to the topology of meromorphic germs were not discussed there. This has produced some lack of understanding of the general constructions. The aim of this note is to partially fill in this gap. At the same time we describe connections with some previous results and generalizations of them.

On atypical values and local monodromies of meromorphic functions

A meromorphic function on a compact complex analytic manifold defines a $\bc\infty$ locally trivial fibration over the complement of a finite set in the projective line $\bc\bp^1$. We describe zeta-functions of local monodromies of this fibration around atypical values. Some applications to polynomial functions on $\bc^n$ are described.

On the zeta-function of a polynomial at infinity

We use the notion of Milnor fibres of the germ of a meromorphic function and the method of partial resolutions for a study of topology of a polynomial map at infinity (mainly for calculation of the zeta-function of a monodromy). It gives effective methods of computation of the zeta-function for a number of cases and a criterium for a value to be atypical at infinity.
