A single atom-based generation of Bell states of two cavities

A new conditional scheme for generating Bell states of two spatially separated high-Q cavities is reported. Our method is based on the passage of one atom only through the two cavities. A distinctive feature of our treatment is that it incorporates from the very beginning the unavoidable presence of fluctuations in the atom-cavity interaction times. The possibility of successfully implementing our proposal against cavity losses and atomic spontaneous decay is carefully discussed.

Dynamical Behavior of a Squid Ring Coupled to a Quantized Electromagnetic Field

In this paper we investigate the dynamical behavior of a SQUID ring coupled to a quantized single-mode electromagnetic field. We have calculated the eigenstates of the combined fully quantum mechanical SQUID-field system. Interesting phenomena occur when the energy difference between the usual symmetric and anti-symmetric SQUID states equals the field energy . We find the low-energy lying entangled stationary states of the system and demonstrate that its dynamics is dominated by coherent Rabi oscillations.

Measuring the mean value of vibrational observables in trapped ion systems

The theoretical foundations of a new general approach to the measurement problem of vibrational observables in trapped ion systems is reported. The method rests upon the introduction of a simple vibronic coupling structure appropriately conceived to link the internal ionic state measurement outcomes to the mean value of a motional variable of interest. Some applications are provided and discussed in detail, bringing to light the feasibility and the wide potentiality of the proposal.

Decoherence and robustness of parity-dependent entanglement in the dynamics of a trapped ion

We study the entanglement between the 2D vibrational motion and two ground state hyperfine levels of a trapped ion, Under particular conditions this entanglement depends on the parity of the total initial vibrational quanta. We study the robustness of this quantum coherence effect with respect to the presence of non-dissipative sources of decoherence, and of an imperfect initial state preparation.

Power Spectrum Analysis of the ESP Galaxy Redshift Survey

We measure the power spectrum of the galaxy distribution in the ESO Slice Project (ESP) galaxy redshift survey. We develope a technique to describe the survey window function analytically, and then deconvolve it from the measured power spectrum using a variant of the Lucy method. We test the whole deconvolution procedure on ESP mock catalogues drawn from large N-body simulations, and find that it is reliable for recovering the correct amplitude and shape of $P(k)$ at $k> 0.065 h$ Mpc$^{-1}$. In general, the technique is applicable to any survey composed by a collection of circular fields with arbitrary pattern on the sky, as typical of surveys based on fibre spectrographs. The estimated power spectrum has a well-defined power-law shape $k^n$ with $n\simeq -2.2$ for $k\ge 0.2 h$ Mpc$^{-1}$, and a smooth bend to a flatter shape ($n\simeq -1.6$) for smaller $k$'s. The smallest wavenumber, where a meaningful reconstruction can be performed ($k\sim 0.06 h$ Mpc$^{-1}$), does not allow us to explore the range of scales where other power spectra seem to show a flattening and hints for a turnover. We also find, by direct comparison of the Fourier transforms, that the estimate of the two-point correlation function $ξ(s)$ is much less sensitive to the effect of a problematic window function as that of the ESP, than the power spectrum. Comparison to other surveys shows an excellent agreement with estimates from blue-selected surveys. In particular, the ESP power spectrum is virtually indistinguishable from that of the Durham-UKST survey over the common range of $k$'s, an indirect confirmation of the quality of the deconvolution technique applied.

Quantum Zeno Effect in Trapped Ions

A "continuous measurement" Quantum Zeno Effect (QZE) in the context of trapped ions is predicted. We describe the physical system and study its exact time evolution showing the appearance of Zeno Phenomena. New indicators for the occurrence of QZE in oscillatory systems are proposed and carefully discussed.

Dynamic Work Distribution for PM Algorithm

Although poor for small dynamic scales, the Particle-Mesh (PM) model allows in astrophysics good insight for large dynamic scales at low computational cost. Furthermore, it is possible to employ a very high number of particles to get high mass resolution. These properties could be exploited by suitable parallelization of the algorithm. In PM there are two types of data: the particle data, i.e. position and velocity, which are stored in one-dimensional arrays of N elements, and the grid data, i.e. density and force, which are stored in three-dimensional arrays $M\times M\times M$ in size. Since individual particles can change cell under the action of gravitational force, parallelization is a real challenge on parallel machine and must account for the machine architecture. We have implemented a dynamic work distribution through agenda parallelism. By subdividing the work in small tasks, the implementation is well balanced, scalable and efficient also for clustered particle distributions. In this contribution we describe this efficient, load balanced, parallel implementation of PM algorithm on Cray T3E at CINECA and show its performances on cosmological simulation results.

Semiclassical Gravity and Large Scale Structure

The possible cosmological effects of primordial fluctuation corrections to the evolution equation of matter obtained from the Wheeler--De Witt equation are explored. In particular, both the metric and a scalar matter field are expanded around their homogeneous values and the corrections induced on the scalar field fluctuation spectrum are perturbatively estimated. Finally, results of a preliminary numerical simulation to investigate the effects on large--scale structure formation are presented.

Velocity Fields in Non--Gaussian Cold Dark Matter Models

We analyse the large--scale velocity field obtained by N--body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) models with non--Gaussian primordial density fluctuations, considering models with both positive and negative primordial skewness in the density fluctuation distribution. We study the velocity probability distribution and calculate the dependence of the bulk flow, one--point velocity dispersion and Cosmic Mach Number on the filtering size. We find that the sign of the primordial skewness of the density field provides poor discriminatory power on the evolved velocity field. All non--Gaussian models here considered tend to have lower velocity dispersion and bulk flow than the standard Gaussian CDM model, while the Cosmic Mach Number turns out to be a poor statistic in characterizing the models. Next, we compare the large--scale velocity field of a composite sample of optically selected galaxies as described by the Local Group properties, bulk flow, velocity correlation function and Cosmic Mach Number, with the velocity field of mock catalogues extracted from the N--body simulations. The comparison does not clearly permit to single out a best model: the standard Gaussian model is however marginally preferred by the maximum likelihood analysis.

Skewness as a Test of Non-Gaussian Primordial Density Fluctuations

We investigate the evolution of the skewness of the distribution of density fluctuations in CDM models with both Gaussian and non--Gaussian initial fluctuations. We show that the method proposed by Coles \& Frenk (1991), which uses the skewness of galaxy counts to test the hypothesis of Gaussian primordial density fluctuations, is a potentially powerful probe of initial conditions. As expected, the mass distribution in models with initially non--Gaussian fluctuations shows systematic departures from the Gaussian behaviour on intermediate to large scales. We investigate the effect of peculiar velocity distortions and normalisation upon the relationship between skewness and variance. These effects are generally small for the models we consider. Comparing our results to the QDOT measurements of the skewness, we find that our initially positive--skew models are clearly excluded by this analysis, but the available data do not rule out the negative--skew models.

Large--Scale Angular Correlations in CDM Models

We generate artificial Lick maps using $N$--body simulations and compare the angular correlation function, $w(\vartheta)$, measured from the simulations with the APM correlation. For the Gaussian CDM model, neither the standard biassed model nor a more evolved model (as suggested by the COBE data), reproduce the correlations on large angular scales. We come to a similar conclusion about CDM models with positively skewed initial fluctuation distributions. In contrast, models with initially negatively skewed fluctuations produce a $w(\vartheta)$ that declines much more gently on large scales. Such models are therefore in principle capable of reconciling the lack of large--scale power of the CDM spectrum with the observed clustering of APM galaxies.
