The convective envelope in gamma Doradus stars: theoretical uncertainties

The depth of the convective envelope plays a fundamental role in the driving mechanism proposed by Guzik et al. (2000) to explain the high-order g modes of gamma Dor pulsators. In this poster we study the sensitivity of the convective envelope depth to the description of convective transport, to relevant physical processes, such as microscopic diffusion, and to other uncertainties in theoretical stellar models.

Instability strips of main sequence B stars: a parametric study of iron enhancement

The discovery of beta Cephei stars in low metallicity environments, as well as the difficulty to theoretically explain the excitation of the pulsation modes observed in some beta Cephei and SPB stars, suggest that the iron opacity ``bump'' provided by standard models could be underestimated. We investigate, by means of a parametric study, the effect of a local iron enhancement on the location of the beta Cephei and SPB instability strips.

Instability strips of SPB and beta Cephei stars: the effect of the updated OP opacities and of the metal mixture

The discovery of $β$ Cephei stars in low metallicity environments, as well as the difficulty in theoretically explaining the excitation of the pulsation modes observed in some $β$ Cephei and hybrid SPB-$β$ Cephei pulsators, suggest that the ``iron opacity bump'' provided by stellar models could be underestimated. We analyze the effect of uncertainties in the opacity computations and in the solar metal mixture, on the excitation of pulsation modes in B-type stars. We carry out a pulsational stability analysis for four grids of main-sequence models with masses between 2.5 and 12 $\rm M_\odot$ computed with OPAL and OP opacity tables and two different metal mixtures. We find that in a typical $β$ Cephei model the OP opacity is 25% larger than OPAL in the region where the driving of pulsation modes occurs. Furthermore, the difference in the Fe mass fraction between the two metal mixtures considered is of the order of 20%. The implication on the excitation of pulsation modes is non-negligible: the blue border of the SPB instability strip is displaced at higher effective temperatures, leading to a larger number of models being hybrid SPB-$β$ Cephei pulsators. Moreover, higher overtone p-modes are excited in $β$ Cephei models and unstable modes are found in a larger number of models for lower metallicities, in particular $β$ Cephei pulsations are also found in models with Z=0.01.

12 Bootis: the need for asteroseismic constraints

12 Bootis is a double-lined spectroscopic binary whose orbit has been resolved by interferometry. We present a detailed modelling of the system and show that the available observational constraints can be reproduced by models at different evolutionary stages, depending on the details of extra-mixing processes acting in the central regions. In order to discriminate among these theoretical scenarios, additional and independent observational constraints are needed: we show that these could be provided by solar-like oscillations, that are expected to be excited in both system components.

Report on the CoRoT Evolution and Seismic Tools Activity

We present the work undertaken by the Evolution and Seismic Tools Activity (ESTA) team of the CoRoT Seismology Working Group. We have focused on two main tasks: Task 1 - now finished - has aimed at testing, comparing and optimising seven stellar evolution codes which will be used to model the internal structure and evolution of the CoRoT target stars. Task 2, still underway, aims at testing, comparing and optimising different seismic codes used to calculate the oscillations of models for different types of stars. The results already obtained are quite satisfactory, showing minor differences between the different numerical tools provided the same assumptions on the physical parameters are made. This work gives us confidence on the numerical tools that will be available to interpret the future CoRoT seismic data.

Probable nonradial g-mode pulsation in early A-type stars

A survey for line profile variability in early A-type stars has been performed in order to detect nonradial pulsation signatures. The star HR 6139, with spectral type A2V and estimated T_eff=8800 K, shows evident line profile variations that can be explained by oscillations in prograde g-modes. This feature and the known photometric variability are similar to those observed in the Slowly Pulsating B-type stars. However HR 6139 is much cooler than the cool border of the instability strip of such variables, and it is hotter than the blue edge of the delta Scuti instability strip. There are indications of a tiny variability also in other four objects, whose nature is not yet clear.

Constraining fundamental stellar parameters using seismology. Application to Alpha Centauri AB

We apply the Levenberg-Marquardt minimization algorithm to seismic and classical observables of the Alpha Cen binary system in order to derive the fundamental parameters of Alpha Cen A+B and to analyze the dependence of these parameters on the chosen observables, on their uncertainty and on the physics used in stellar modelling. The seismological data are those by Bouchy & Carrier (2002) for Alpha Cen A, and those by Carrier & Bourban (2003) for Alpha Cen B. We show that while the fundamental stellar parameters do not depend on the treatment of convection adopted (Mixing Length Theory -- MLT -- or ``Full Spectrum of Turbulence'' -- FST), the age of the system depends on the inclusion of gravitational settling, and is deeply biased by the small frequency separation of component B. We try to answer the question of the universality of the mixing length parameter, and we find a statistically reliable dependence of the alpha--parameter on the HR diagram location (with a trend similar to the one predicted by Ludwig et al.1999). We propose the frequency separation ratios introduced by Roxburgh & Voronstsov (2003) as better observables to determine the fundamental stellar parameters, and to use the large frequency separation and frequencies to extract information about the stellar structure. The effects of diffusion and equation of state on the oscillation frequencies are also studied, but present seismic data do not allow their detection.

Solar model with CNO revised abundances

Recent three-dimensional, NLTE analyses of the solar spectrum have shown a significant reduction in the C, N, O and Ne abundances leading to a Z/X ratio of the order of 0.0177. We have computed solar models with this new mixture in the OPAL opacity tables. The present He abundance we find seems rather consistent with the helioseismic value. However, the convective envelope is too shallow, and diffusion, even if it reduces the discrepancy, is not able to give the current value. We present some numerical experiments consisting in changing the diffusion velocities and/or the value of opacity at the base of the convective envelope.
