Remarkable change of tunneling conductance in YBCO films in fields up to 32.4T

We studied the tunneling density of states in YBCO films under strong currents flowing along node directions. The currents were induced by fields of up to 32.4T parallel to the film surface and perpendicular to the $CuO_{2}$ planes. We observed a remarkable change in the tunneling conductance at high fields where the gap-like feature shifts discontinuously from 15meV to a lower bias of 11meV, becoming more pronounced as the field increases. The effect takes place in increasing fields around 9T and the transition back to the initial state occurs around 5T in decreasing fields. We argue that this transition is driven by surface currents induced by the applied magnetic field.

Transverse "resistance overshoot" in a Si/SiGe two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum Hall effect regime

We investigate the peculiarities of the "overshoot" phenomena in the transverse Hall resistance R_{xy} in Si/SiGe. Near the low magnetic field end of the quantum Hall effect plateaus, when the filling factor νapproaches an integer i, R_{xy} overshoots the normal plateau value h/ie^2. However, if magnetic field B increases further, R_{xy} decreases to its normal value. It is shown that in the investigated sample n-Si/Si_{0.7}Ge_{0.3}, overshoots exist for almost all ν. Existence of overshoot in R_{xy} observed in different materials and for different ν, where splitting of the adjacent Landau bands has different character, hints at the common origin of this effect. Comparison of the experimental curves R_{xy}(ν) for ν= 3 and ν= 5 with and without overshoot showed that this effect exist in the whole interval between plateaus, not only in the region where R_{xy} exceeds the normal plateau value.

Correlation between the Extraordinary Hall Effect and Resistivity

We study the contribution of different types of scattering sources to the extraordinary Hall effect. Scattering by magnetic nano-particles embedded in normal-metal matrix, insulating impurities in magnetic matrix, surface scattering and temperature dependent scattering are experimentally tested. Our new data, as well as previously published results on a variety of materials, are fairly interpreted by a simple modification of the skew scattering model.

Order parameter node removal in the d-wave superconductor $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$ under magnetic field

hether the node in the order parameter characteristic of a $d-wave$ superconductor can or cannot be removed by an applied magnetic field has been a subject of debate in recent years. Thermal conductivity results on the high Tc superconductor $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}$ originally explained by Laughlin in terms of such a node removal were complicated by hysteresis effects, and judged inconclusive. We present new tunneling data on $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$ that support the existence of the node removal effect, under specific orientations of the sample's surfaces and magnetic field. We also explain the hysteretic behavior and other previous tunneling results so far not understood satisfactorily, attributing them to a combination of node removal and Doppler shift of low energy surface bound states.

Magnetoconductivity of icosahedral and amorphous Al-Pd-Re films - a comparison

The magnetoconductivity of quasicrystals is often discussed in the frame of quantum corrections, namely weak (anti-) localiza-tion and electron-electron interaction. A premise for both effects is a strong elastic scattering of conduction electrons. Amorphous and icosahedral phases are discussed as Hume-Rothery alloys with an electronically induced structural peak at the diameter of the Fermi sphere. Therefore, both should exhibit quantum corrections. The preparation of quasicrystalline films via the amorphous route offers the possibility to compare the magnetoconductivity on samples of identical composition but different structure. We report on magnetoconduc-tivity measurements at temperatures between 0.2 K and 22 K and for magnetic fields up to 16 T. With the exception of the electronic diffusion constant, amorphous as well as icosahedral Al-Pd-Re films can be described by nearly the same set of parameters if the samples are well on the metallic side of the metal-insulator transition.
