Matrix Model Conjecture for Exact BS Periods and Nekrasov Functions

We give a concise summary of the impressive recent development unifying a number of different fundamental subjects. The quiver Nekrasov functions (generalized hypergeometric series) form a full basis for all conformal blocks of the Virasoro algebra and are sufficient to provide the same for some (special) conformal blocks of W-algebras. They can be described in terms of Seiberg-Witten theory, with the SW differential given by the 1-point resolvent in the DV phase of the quiver (discrete or conformal) matrix model (β-ensemble), dS = ydz + O(ε^2) = \sum_p ε^{2p} ρ_β^{(p|1)}(z), where εand βare related to the LNS parameters ε_1 and ε_2. This provides explicit formulas for conformal blocks in terms of analytically continued contour integrals and resolves the old puzzle of the free-field description of generic conformal blocks through the Dotsenko-Fateev integrals. Most important, this completes the GKMMM description of SW theory in terms of integrability theory with the help of exact BS integrals, and provides an extended manifestation of the basic principle which states that the effective actions are the tau-functions of integrable hierarchies.

Universal Algebras of Hurwitz Numbers

Infinite-dimensional universal Cardy-Frobenius algebra is constructed, which unifies all particular algebras of closed and open Hurwitz numbers and is closely related to the algebra of differential operators, familiar from the theory of Generalized Kontsevich Model.

Complete Set of Cut-and-Join Operators in Hurwitz-Kontsevich Theory

We define cut-and-join operator in Hurwitz theory for merging of two branching points of arbitrary type. These operators have two alternative descriptions:(i) they have the GL characters as eigenfunctions and the symmetric-group characters as eigenvalues; (ii) they can be represented as differential operators of the $W$-type (in particular, acting on the time-variables in the Hurwitz-Kontsevich tau-function). The operators have the simplest form if expressed in terms of the matrix Miwa-variables. They form an important commutative associative algebra, a Universal Hurwitz Algebra, generalizing all group algebra centers of particular symmetric groups which are used in description of the Universal Hurwitz numbers of particular orders. This algebra expresses arbitrary Hurwitz numbers as values of a distinguished linear form on the linear space of Young diagrams, evaluated at the product of all diagrams, which characterize particular ramification points of the covering.

Nekrasov Functions from Exact BS Periods: the Case of SU(N)

In arXiv:0910.5670 we suggested that the Nekrasov function with one non-vanishing deformation parameter εis obtained by the standard Seiberg-Witten contour-integral construction. The only difference is that the Seiberg-Witten differential pdx is substituted by its quantized version for the corresponding integrable system, and contour integrals become exact monodromies of the wave function. This provides an explicit formulation of the earlier guess in arXiv:0908.4052. In this paper we successfully check this suggestion in the first order in ε^2 and the first order in instanton expansion for the SU(N) model, where non-trivial is already consistency of the so deformed Seiberg-Witten equations.

Nekrasov Functions and Exact Bohr-Sommerfeld Integrals

In the case of SU(2), associated by the AGT relation to the 2d Liouville theory, the Seiberg-Witten prepotential is constructed from the Bohr-Sommerfeld periods of 1d sine-Gordon model. If the same construction is literally applied to monodromies of exact wave functions, the prepotential turns into the one-parametric Nekrasov prepotential F(a,ε_1) with the other epsilon parameter vanishing, ε_2=0, and ε_1 playing the role of the Planck constant in the sine-Gordon Shroedinger equation, \hbar=ε_1. This seems to be in accordance with the recent claim in arXiv:0908.4052 and poses a problem of describing the full Nekrasov function as a seemingly straightforward double-parametric quantization of sine-Gordon model. This also provides a new link between the Liouville and sine-Gordon theories.

Zamolodchikov asymptotic formula and instanton expansion in N=2 SUSY N_f=2N_c QCD

The AGT relations allow one to convert the Zamolodchikov asymptotic formula for the conformal block into the instanton expansion of the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for theory with two colors and four fundamental flavors. This provides an explicit formula for the instanton corrections in this model, resolving in this way an old problem in Seiberg-Witten theory. The answer is especially elegant for vanishing matter masses, then the bare charge of gauge theory 16q_0 = 16e^{iπτ_0} plays the role of a branch point on the spectral torus. The exact prepotential at this point is F a^2\log q with q\neq q_0, unlike the case of another conformal theory, with massless adjoint field. Instead, 16q_0 = θ_{10}^4/θ_{00}^4(q) = 16q(1+O(q)), i.e. the Zamolodchikov asymptotics gives rise, in particular, to an exact non-perturbative beta-function so that the effective coupling differs from the bare charge by infinite number of instantonic corrections.

Proving AGT relations in the large-c limit

In the limit of large central charge $c$ the 4-point Virasoro conformal block becomes a hypergeometric function. It is represented by a sum of chiral Nekrasov functions, which can also be explicitly evaluated. In this way the known proof of the AGT relation is extended from special to generic set of external states, but in the special limit of c=\infty.

On non-conformal limit of the AGT relations

The Seiberg-Witten prepotentials for N=2 SUSY gauge theories with N_f<2N_c fundamental multiplets are obtained from conformal N_f=2N_c theory by decoupling 2N_c-N_f multiplets of heavy matter. This procedure can be lifted to the level of Nekrasov functions with arbitrary background parameters epsilon_1 and epsilon_2. The AGT relations imply that similar limit exists for conformal blocks (or, for generic N_c>2, for the blocks in conformal theories with W_{N_c} chiral algebra). We consider the limit of the four-point function explicitly in the Virasoro case of N_c=2, by bringing the dimensions of external states to infinity. The calculation is performed entirely in terms of representation theory for the Virasoro algebra and reproduces the answers conjectured in arXiv:0908.0307 with the help of the brane-compactification analysis and computer simulations. In this limit, the conformal block involving four external primaries, corresponding to the theory with vanishing beta-function, turns either into a 2-point or 3-point function, with certain coherent rather than primary external states.

On AGT relation in the case of U(3)

We consider the AGT relation, expressing conformal blocks for the Virasoro and W-algebras in terms of Nekrasov's special functions, in the simplest case of the 4-point functions for the first non-trivial W_3 algebra. The standard set of Nekrasov functions is sufficient only if additional null-vector restriction is imposed on a half of the external $W$-primaries and this is just the case when the conformal blocks are fully dictated by W-symmetry and do not depend on a particular model. Explicit checks confirm that the AGT relation survives in this restricted case, as expected.

The Power of Nekrasov Functions

The recent AGT suggestion to use the set of Nekrasov functions as a basis for a linear decomposition of generic conformal blocks works very well not only in the case of Virasoro symmetry, but also for conformal theories with extended chiral algebra. This is rather natural, because Nekrasov functions are introduced as expansion basis for generalized hypergeometric integrals, very similar to those which arise in expansion of Dotsenko-Fateev integrals in powers of alpha-parameters. Thus, the AGT conjecture is closely related to the old belief that conformal theory can be effectively described in the free field formalism, and it can actually be a key to clear formulating and proof this long-standing hypothesis. As an application of this kind of reasoning we use knowledge of the exact hypergeometric conformal block for complete proof of the AGT relation for a restricted class of external states.

Deviation from Alday-Maldacena Duality For Wavy Circle

Alday-Maldacena conjecture is that the area A_P of the minimal surface in AdS_5 space with a boundary P, located in Euclidean space at infinity of AdS_5, coincides with a double integral D_P along P, the Abelian Wilson average in an auxiliary dual model. The boundary P is a polygon formed by momenta of n external light-like particles in N=4 SYM theory, and in a certain n=infty limit it can be substituted by an arbitrary smooth curve (wavy circle). The Alday-Maldacena conjecture is known to be violated for n>5, when it fails to be supported by the peculiar global conformal invariance, however, the structure of deviations remains obscure. The case of wavy lines can appear more convenient for analysis of these deviations due to the systematic method developed in arXiv:0803.1547 for (perturbative) evaluation of minimal areas, which is not yet available in the presence of angles at finite n. We correct a mistake in that paper and explicitly evaluate the h^2\bar h^2 terms, where the first deviation from the Alday-Maldacena duality arises for the wavy circle.

Partition Functions of Matrix Models as the First Special Functions of String Theory. II. Kontsevich Model

In arXiv:hep-th/0310113 we started a program of creating a reference-book on matrix-model tau-functions, the new generation of special functions, which are going to play an important role in string theory calculations. The main focus of that paper was on the one-matrix Hermitian model tau-functions. The present paper is devoted to a direct counterpart for the Kontsevich and Generalized Kontsevich Model (GKM) tau-functions. We mostly focus on calculating resolvents (=loop operator averages) in the Kontsevich model, with a special emphasis on its simplest (Gaussian) phase, where exists a surprising integral formula, and the expressions for the resolvents in the genus zero and one are especially simple (in particular, we generalize the known genus zero result to genus one). We also discuss various features of generic phases of the Kontsevich model, in particular, a counterpart of the unambiguous Gaussian solution in the generic case, the solution called Dijkgraaf-Vafa (DV) solution. Further, we extend the results to the GKM and, in particular, discuss the p-q duality in terms of resolvents and corresponding Riemann surfaces in the example of dualities between (2,3) and (3,2) models.

Virasoro constraints for Kontsevich-Hurwitz partition function

M.Kazarian and S.Lando found a 1-parametric interpolation between Kontsevich and Hurwitz partition functions, which entirely lies within the space of KP tau-functions. V.Bouchard and M.Marino suggested that this interpolation satisfies some deformed Virasoro constraints. However, they described the constraints in a somewhat sophisticated form of AMM-Eynard equations for the rather involved Lambert spectral curve. Here we present the relevant family of Virasoro constraints explicitly. They differ from the conventional continuous Virasoro constraints in the simplest possible way: by a constant shift u^2/24 of the L_{-1} operator, where u is an interpolation parameter between Kontsevich and Hurwitz models. This trivial modification of the string equation gives rise to the entire deformation which is a conjugation of the Virasoro constraints L_m -> U L_m U^{-1} and "twists" the partition function, Z_{KH}= U Z_K. The conjugation U is expressed through the previously unnoticed operators which annihilate the quasiclassical (planar) free energy of the Kontsevich model, but do not belong to the symmetry group GL(\infty) of the universal Grassmannian.

"Anomaly" in n=infinity Alday-Maldacena Duality for Wavy Circle

If the Alday-Maldacena version of string/gauge duality is formulated as an equivalence between double loop and area integrals a la arXiv: 0708.1625, then this pure geometric relation can be tested for various choices of n-side polygons. The simplest possibility arises at n=infinity, with polygon substituted by an arbitrary continuous curve. If the curve is a circle, the minimal surface problem is exactly solvable. If it infinitesimally deviates from a circle, then the duality relation can be studied by expanding in powers of a small parameter. In the first approximation the Nambu-Goto (NG) equations can be linearized, and the peculiar NG Laplacian plays the central role. Making use of explicit zero-modes of this operator (NG-harmonic functions), we investigate the geometric duality in the lowest orders for small deformations of arbitrary shape lying in the plane of the original circle. We find a surprisingly strong dependence of the minimal area on regularization procedure affecting "the boundary terms" in minimal area. If these terms are totally omitted, the remaining piece is regularization independent, but still differs by simple numerical factors like 4 from the double-loop integral which represents the BDS formula so that we stop short from the first non-trivial confirmation of the Alday-Maldacena duality. This confirms the earlier-found discrepancy for two parallel lines at n=infinity, but demonstrates that it actually affects only a finite number (out of infinitely many) of parameters in the functional dependence on the shape of the boundary, and the duality is only slightly violated, which allows one to call this violation an anomaly.

Boundary Ring: a way to construct approximate NG solutions with polygon boundary conditions: I. Z_n-symmetric configurations

We describe an algebro-geometric construction of polygon-bounded minimal surfaces in ADS_5, based on consideration of what we call the "boundary ring" of polynomials. The first non-trivial example of the Nambu-Goto (NG) solutions for Z_6-symmetric hexagon is considered in some detail. Solutions are represented as power series, of which only the first terms are evaluated. The NG equations leave a number of free parameters (a free function). Boundary conditions, which fix the free parameters, are imposed on truncated series. It is still unclear if explicit analytic formulas can be found in this way, but even approximate solutions, obtained by truncation of power series, can be sufficient to investigate the Alday-Maldacena -- BDS/BHT version of the string/gauge duality.

Some properties of the Alday-Maldacena minimum

The Alday-Maldacena solution, relevant to the n=4 gluon amplitude in N=4 SYM at strong coupling, was recently identified as a minimum of the regularized action in the moduli space of solutions of the AdS_5 sigma-model equations of motion. Analogous solutions of the Nambu-Goto equations for the n=4 case are presented and shown to form (modulo the reparametrization group) an equally large but different moduli space, with the Alday-Maldacena solution at the intersection of the sigma-model and Nambu-Goto moduli spaces. We comment upon the possible form of the regularized action for n=5. A function of moduli parameters z_a is written, whose minimum reproduces the BDDK one-loop five-gluon amplitude. This function may thus be considered as some kind of Legendre transform of the BDDK formula and has its own value independently of the Alday-Maldacena approach.

On the Problem of Radiation Friction Beyond 4 and 6 Dimensions

We count the number of independent structures which can arise in expressions for radiation friction force in different even space-time dimensions and demonstrate that their number is too big at d\geq 8 to allow determination of this force from the transversality condition alone, as was done by B.Kosyakov in 6d. This implies that in general one can not bypass a tedious calculation involving explicit regularization and evaluation of emerging counterterms. However, simple Kosyakov's method works nicely in any dimension for the special case of circular motion with constant angular velocity.

WDVV equations for 6d Seiberg-Witten theory and bi-elliptic curves

We present a generic derivation of the WDVV equations for 6d Seiberg-Witten theory, and extend it to the families of bi-elliptic spectral curves. We find that the elliptization of the naive perturbative and nonperturbative 6d systems roughly "doubles" the number of moduli describing the system.
