Hurewicz Theorem for Assouad-Nagata dimension

Given a function $f\colon X\to Y$ of metric spaces, its {\it asymptotic dimension} $\asdim(f)$ is the supremum of $\asdim(A)$ such that $A\subset X$ and $\asdim(f(A))=0$. Our main result is \begin{Thm} \label{ThmAInAbstract} $\asdim(X)\leq \asdim(f)+\asdim(Y)$ for any large scale uniform function $f\colon X\to Y$. \end{Thm} \ref{ThmAInAbstract} generalizes a result of Bell and Dranishnikov in which $f$ is Lipschitz and $X$ is geodesic. We provide analogs of \ref{ThmAInAbstract} for Assouad-Nagata dimension $\dim_{AN}$ and asymptotic Assouad-Nagata dimension $\ANasdim$. In case of linearly controlled asymptotic dimension $\Lasdim$ we provide counterexamples to three questions in a list of problems of Dranishnikov. As an application of analogs of \ref{ThmAInAbstract} we prove \begin{Thm} \label{ThmBInAbstract} If $1\to K\to G\to H\to 1$ is an exact sequence of groups and $G$ is finitely generated, then $$\ANasdim (G,d_G)\leq \ANasdim (K,d_G|K)+\ANasdim (H,d_H)$$ for any word metrics metrics $d_G$ on $G$ and $d_H$ on $H$. \end{Thm} \ref{ThmBInAbstract} extends a result of Bell and Dranishnikov for asymptotic dimension.

Hurewicz-Serre Theorem in extension theory

The paper is devoted to generalizations of Cencelj-Dranishnikov theorems relating extension properties of nilpotent CW complexes to its homology groups. Here are the main results of the paper: \par {\bf Theorem}. Suppose $L$ is a nilpotent CW complex and $F$ is the homotopy fiber of the inclusion $i$ of $L$ into its infinite symmetric product $SP(L)$. If $X$ is a metrizable space such that $XτK(H_k(L),k)$ for all $k\ge 1$, then $XτK(π_k(F),k)$ and $XτK(π_k(L),k)$ for all $k\ge 2$. \par {\bf Theorem}. Let $X$ be a metrizable space such that $\dim(X) < \infty$ or $X\in ANR$. Suppose $L$ is a nilpotent CW complex and $SP(L)$ is its infinite symmetric product. If $XτSP(L)$, then $XτL$ in the following cases: \begin{itemize} \item[a.] $H_1(L)$ is finitely generated. \item[b.] $H_1(L)$ is a torsion group. \end{itemize}

Svarc-Milnor Lemma: a proof by definition

The famous Švarc-Milnor Lemma says that a group $G$ acting properly and cocompactly via isometries on a length space $X$ is finitely generated and induces a quasi-isometry equivalence $g\to g\cdot x_0$ for any $x_0\in X$. We redefine the concept of coarseness so that the proof of the Lemma is automatic.

Nagata-Assouad dimension via Lipschitz extensions

In the first part of the paper we show how to relate several dimension theories (asymptotic dimension with Higson property, asymptotic dimension of Gromov, and capacity dimension of Buyalo \cite{Buyalo1}) to Nagata-Assouad dimension. This is done by applying two functors on the Lipschitz category of metric spaces: microscopic and macroscopic. In the second part we identify (among spaces of finite Nagata-Assouad dimension) spaces of Nagata-Assouad dimension at most $n$ as those for which the $n$-sphere $S^n$ is a Lipschitz extensor. Large scale and small scale analogs of that result are given.

Direct observation of 4+ to 2+ gamma transition in 8Be

The low lying states in $^8$Be are believed to have a two-alpha cluster structure and hence a large intrinsic quadrupole deformation. An earlier calculation showed a large collective enhancement in gamma transition probability between the low lying states leading to a 4$^+$ to 2$^+$ gamma branch of $\sim10^{-7}$ and a resonant radiative cross section of 134 nb for the $α+α$ entrance channel. We report here the first experimental evidence for this transition through a $γ-α-α$ coincidence measurement in the reaction $^4$He($α,αγ$)$^4$He using a gas target. The measured cross sections on and off the 4$^+$ resonance are 165 $\pm$ 41 (stat) $\pm$35 (sys) nb and 39 $\pm$ 25 (stat) $\pm$7 (sys) nb, respectively.

Semiclassical analysis of the Nonequilibrium Local Polaron

A resonant level strongly coupled to a local phonon under nonequilibrium conditions is investigated. The nonequilibrium Hartree-Fock approximation is shown to correspond to approximating the steady state density matrix by delta functions at field values to which the local dynamics relaxes in a semiclassical limit. If multiple solutions exist, all are shown to make nonvanishing contributions to physical quantities: multistability does not exist. Nonequilibrium effects are shown to produce decoherence, causing the standard expansions to converge and preventing the formation of a polaron feature in the spectral function. The formalism also applies to the nonequilibrium Kondo problem.

Phonon effects in molecular transistors: Quantum and classical treatment

We present a comprehensive theoretical treatment of the effect of electron-phonon interactions in molecular transistors, including both quantal and classical limits and we study both equilibrated and out of equilibrium phonons. We present detailed results for conductance, noise and phonon distribution in two regimes. One involves temperatures large as compared to the rate of electronic transitions on and off the dot; in this limit our approach yields classical rate equations, which are solved numerically for a wide range of parameters. The other regime is that of low temperatures and weak electron-phonon coupling where a perturbative approximation in the Keldysh formulation can be applied. The interplay between the phonon-induced renormalization of the density of states on the quantum dot and the phonon-induced renormalization of the dot-lead coupling is found to be important. Whether or not the phonons are able to equilibrate in a time rapid compared to the transit time of an electron through the dot is found to affect the conductance. Observable signatures of phonon equilibration are presented. We also discuss the nature of the low-T to high-T crossover.

Phonon effects in molecular transistors

Quantum Limit on Computational Time and Speed

We investigate if physical laws can impose limit on computational time and speed of a quantum computer built from elementary particles. We show that the product of the speed and the running time of a quantum computer is limited by the type of fundamental interactions present inside the system. This will help us to decide as to what type of interaction should be allowed in building quantum computers in achieving the desired speed.
