Simultaneous Multi-Wavelength Observations of Sgr A* during 2007 April 1-11

We report the detection of variable emission from Sgr A* in almost all wavelength bands (i.e. centimeter, millimeter, submillimeter, near-IR and X-rays) during a multi-wavelength observing campaign. Three new moderate flares are detected simultaneously in both near-IR and X-ray bands. The ratio of X-ray to near-IR flux in the flares is consistent with inverse Compton scattering of near-IR photons by submillimeter emitting relativistic particles which follow scaling relations obtained from size measurements of Sgr A*. We also find that the flare statistics in near-IR wavelengths is consistent with the probability of flare emission being inversely proportional to the flux. At millimeter wavelengths, the presence of flare emission at 43 GHz (7mm) using VLBA with milli-arcsecond spatial resolution indicates the first direct evidence that hourly time scale flares are localized within the inner 30$\times$70 Schwarzschild radii of Sgr A*. We also show several cross correlation plots between near-IR, millimeter and submillimeter light curves that collectively demonstrate the presence of time delays between the peaks of emission up to three hours. The evidence for time delays at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths are consistent with the source of emission being optically thick initially followed by a transition to an optically thin regime. In particular, there is an intriguing correlation between the optically thin near-IR and X-ray flare and optically thick radio flare at 43 GHz that occurred on 2007 April 4. This would be the first evidence of a radio flare emission at 43 GHz delayed with respect to the near-IR and X-ray flare emission.

Cosmic Ray Tests of the Prototype TPC for the ILC Experiment

A time projection chamber (TPC) is a strong candidate for the central tracker of the international linear collider (ILC) experiment and we have been conducting a series of cosmic ray experiments under a magnetic field up to 4 T, using a small prototype TPC with a replaceable readout device: multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC) or gas electron multiplier (GEM). We first confirmed that the MWPC readout could not be a fall-back option of the ILC-TPC under a strong axial magnetic field of 4 T since its spatial resolution suffered severely from the so called E x B effect in the vicinity of the wire planes. The GEM readout, on the other hand, was found to be virtually free from the E x B effect as had been expected and gave the resolution determined by the transverse diffusion of the drift electrons (diffusion limited). Furthermore, GEMs allow a wider choice of gas mixtures than MWPCs. Among the gases we tried so far a mixture of Ar-CF4-isobutane, in which MWPCs could be prone to discharges, seems promising as the operating gas of the ILC-TPC because of its small diffusion constant especially under a strong magnetic field. We report the measured drift properties of this mixture including the diffusion constant as a function of the electric field and compare them with the predictions of Magboltz. Also presented is the spatial resolution of a GEM-based ILC-TPC estimated from the measurement with the prototype.

An SiO Maser Search off the Galactic Plane

We have searched for the SiO J=1--0 v= 1 and 2 maser lines at ~ 43 GHz in 277 2MASS/MSX/IRAS sources off the Galactic plane (|b|> 3 deg), which resulted in 119 (112 new) detections. Among the new detections, are two very faint objects with MSX 12 micron flux densities below 2 Jy. These are likely to be O-rich AGB-stars associated with dwarf-galaxy tidal tails. The sample also includes medium bright MSX objects at moderately high Galactic latitudes (3 deg<|b|<5 deg) and in the IRAS gap at higher latitudes. A signature of a warp of the inner Galactic disk is found for a disk subsample. This warp appears relatively strongly in the area of 0<l<45 deg and 3<|b|<5 deg. We also found a group of stars that does not follow to the Galactic rotation. This feature appears in the Galactic disk at l~ 27 deg, and extends more than 15 deg in Galactic latitude, like a stream of tidal debris from a dwarf galaxy.

Molecular outflows around high-mass young stellar objects

We present a study of molecular outflows using high-resolution mapping of the CO (1-0) line emission toward eight relatively nearby 6.7 GHz methanol masers, which are associated with massive star forming regions. Outflows were detected in seven out of eight sources, and five of them clearly show bipolar or multiple outflow morphologies. These outflows have typical masses of a few solar masses, momenta of tens of $M_{\odot}$ km s$^{-1}$, kinetic energies of $\sim$ 10$^{45}$ ergs, and the mass entrainment rate of a few $10^{-5} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. They have significantly more mass and kinetic energy than their low-mass counterparts. In some of the sources, the massive outflow is obviously associated with a particular massive star in the cluster, while in others the origin remains uncertain. The high detection rate of outflows toward methanol masers suggests that the outflow phase of massive protostars encompasses the methanol maser phase.

SiO Maser Survey of IRAS Sources in the Inner Galactic Disk

We have surveyed 401 color selected IRAS sources in the Galactic disk in the SiO J=1--0 v= 1 and 2 maser lines at 43 GHz, resulting in 254 (239 new) detections. The observed sources lie mostly in a strip of the inner Galactic disk with boundaries -10<l<40 deg and |b|<3 deg. This survey provides radial velocities of inner-disk stars for which optical measurements cannot be made due to interstellar extinction. The SiO $l$--$v$ diagram in the area $-10<l<40 deg exhibits fewer objects coincident with the molecular ring feature than the OH 1612 MHz source $l$--$v$ map does, indicating a slight difference of stellar type between SiO and OH emitting stars. After identifying all of the SiO detected sources in the 2MASS near-infrared catalog, we computed their luminosity distances based on the infrared fluxes. We then mapped these objects onto the first quadrant of the Galactic plane. Combining the distances with the SiO radial-velocities, we obtained a pattern speed for SiO maser sources, Omega_P=21 (+- 13) km s^{-1} kpc^{-1}, between the distances 1 and 5.5 kpc, without the use of any dynamical models. The increase of the pattern speed toward the Galactic center (up to 60 km s^{-1} kpc^{-1} between the distances, 5.5 and 7 kpc) suggests the presence of two pattern speeds in the Galaxy.

SiO Maser Survey of the Large-Amplitude Variables in the Galactic Center

We have surveyed ~400 known large-amplitude variables within 15' of the galactic center in the SiO J=1--0 v=1 and 2 maser lines at 43 GHz, resulting in 179 detections. SiO lines were also detected from 16 other resulting in 180 detections. SiO lines were also detected from 16 other sources, which are located within 20" (the telescope half beamwidth) of the program objects. The detection rate of 48 percent is comparable to that obtained in Bulge IRAS source surveys. Among the SiO detections, five stars have radial velocities greater than 200 km/s. The SiO detection rate increases steeply with the period of light variation, particularly for stars with P>500 d, where it exceeds 80%. We found that, at a given period, the SiO detection rate is approximately three times that for OH. These facts suggest that the large-amplitude variables in the Nuclear Disk region are AGB stars similar in their overall properties to the inner and outer Bulge IRAS/SiO sources. From the set of radial velocity data, the mass distribution within 30 pc of the galactic center is derived by a new method which is based on the collisionless Boltzmann equation integrated along the line of sight. The mass within 30 pc is about 6.4 [\pm 0.7] \times 10^7 M_{\odot} and the mass of the central black hole is 2.7 [\pm 1.3] \times 10^6 M_{\odot}. Consideration of the line-of-sight velocity of each star and its potential energy leads to the conclusion that the five high-velocity stars come from galactocentric distances as high as 300 pc. The high-velocity subsample of stars with negative radial velocities exhibits a tendency to have brighter K magnitudes than the subsample of stars with positive velocities. The origin of these high-velocity stars is discussed.

Detections of SiO Masers from the Large-Amplitude Variables in the Galactic Nuclear Disk

We have surveyed known large-amplitude variables within 15' of the Galactic center in the SiO J=1-0 v=1 and 2 maser lines at 43 GHz, resulting in 79 detections and 58 non-detections. The detection rate of 58 percent is comparable to that obtained in Bulge IRAS source surveys. SiO lines were also detected from four other sources near the program objects. The SiO detection rate increases steeply with the period, particularly for stars with P>500 d, where it exceeds 80%. We found at a given period that the SiO detection rate is approximately double that for OH. These facts suggest that the large-amplitude variables in the Nuclear Disk region are AGB stars similar in their overall properties to the inner and outer bulge IRAS/SiO sources.

Scalar Field as Dark Matter and Machian Cosmological Solution in the Generalized Scalar-Tensor Theory of Gravitation

The Machian cosmological solution satisfying $ϕ=O(ρ/ω)$ in the generalized scalar-tensor theory of gravitation with the varying cosmological constant is summarized. The scalar field $ϕ$ with the exponential potential is introduced as dark matter and the barotropic evolution of matter in the universe is discussed. As the universe expands, the coefficient $γ$ of the equation of state approaches to -1/3 and the coupling function $ω(ϕ)$ diverges to $-\infty $.

Time-Variation of the Gravitational Constant and the Machian Solution in the Brans-Dicke Theory

The Machian cosmological solution satisfying $ϕ=O(ρ/ω)$ for the perfect-fluid with negative pressure is discussed. When the coefficient of the equation of state $γ\to -1/3$, the gravitational constant approaches to constant. If we assume the present mass density $ρ_{0}\sim ρ_{c}$ (critical density), the parameter $ε$ ($γ=(ε-1)/3$) has a value of order $10^{-3}$ to support the present gravitational constant. The closed model is valid for $ω<-3/2ε$ and exhibits the slow accelerating expansion. We understand why the coupling parameter $| ω|$ is so large ($ω\sim -10^{3}$). The time-variation of the gravitational constant $| \dot{G}/G| \sim 10^{-13} yr^{-1}$ at present is derived in this model.

Varying Cosmological Constant and the Machian Solution in the Generalized Scalar-Tensor Theory

The cosmological constant $(1/2)λ_{1}ϕ_{, μ}ϕ^{, μ}/ϕ^{2}$ is introduced to the generalized scalar-tensor theory of gravitation with the coupling function $ω(ϕ)=η/(ξ-2)$ and the Machian cosmological solution satisfying $ϕ=O(ρ/ω)$ is discussed for the homogeneous and isotropic universe with a perfect fluid (with negative pressure). We require the closed model and the negative coupling function for the attractive gravitational force. The constraint $% ω(ϕ)<-3/2$ for $0\leqq ξ<2$ leads to $η>3$. If $λ_{1}<0$ and $0\leqq -η/λ_{1}<2$, the universe shows the slowly accelerating expansion. The coupling function diverges to $-\infty $ and the scalar field $ϕ$ converges to $G_{\infty}^{-1}$ when $ξ\to 2$ ($t\to +\infty $). The cosmological constant decays in proportion to $t^{-2}$. Thus the Machian cosmological model approaches to the Friedmann universe in general relativity with $\ddot{a}=0$, $λ=0$, and $p=-ρ/3$ as $t\to +\infty $. General relativity is locally valid enough at present.

Machian Cosmological Solution in the Generalized Scalar-Tensor Theory of Gravitation

The Machian cosmological solution satisfying $ϕ=O(ρ/ω)$ is discussed for the homogeneous and isotropic universe with a perfect fluid (with negative pressure) in the generalized scalar-tensor theory of gravitation. We propose $ω(ϕ)=η/(ξ-2)$ for the coupling function in the Machian point of view. The parameter $ξ$ varies in time very slowly from $ξ=0$ to $ξ=2$ because of the physical evolution of matter in the universe. When $ξ\to 2$, the coupling function diverges to $-\infty$ and the scalar field $ϕ$ converges to $G_{\infty}^{-1}$. The present mass density is precisely predicted if the present time of the universe is given. We obtain $ρ_{0}=1.6\times 10^{-29} g.cm^{-3}$ for $t_{0}=1.5\times 10^{10} yr$. The universe shows the slowly decelerating expansion for the time-varying coupling function.

Uniqueness of the Machian Solution in the Brans-Dicke Theory

Machian solutions of which the scalar field exhibits the asymptotic behavior $ϕ=O(ρ/ω)$ are generally explored for the homogeneous and isotropic universe in the Brans-Dicke theory. It is shown that the Machian solution is unique for the closed and the open space. Such a solution is restricted to one that satisfies the relation $GM/c^{2}a=const$, which is fixed to $π$ in the theory for the closed model. Another type of solution satisfying $ϕ=O(ρ/ω)$ with the arbitrary coupling constant $% ω$ is obtained for the flat space. This solution has the scalar field $% ϕ\propto ρt^{2}$ and also keeps the relation $GM/c^{2}R=const$ all the time. This Machian relation and the asymptotic behavior $ϕ=O(ρ/ω)$ is equivalent to each other in the Brans-Dicke theory.

Physical Significance of the Difference between the Brans-Dicke Theory and General Relativity

The asymptotic behavior of the scalar field and its physical meaning are discussed for T=0 and T\neq 0 for the large enough coupling parameter ω. The special character of the Brans-Dicke theory is also discussed for local and cosmological problems in comparison with general relativity and the selection rules are introduced respectivley. The scalar field by locally-distributed matter should exhibit the asymptotic behavior ϕ= <ϕ> +O(1/ω) because of the presence of cosmological matter. The scalar field of a proper cosmological solution should have the asymptotic form ϕ=O(ρ/ω) and should converge to zero in the continuous limit ρ/ω\to 0.

A Large-scale CO Imaging of the Galactic Center. II. Dynamical Properties of Molecular Clouds

The data from the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m telescope Galactic Center CO survey have been analyzed to generate a compilation of molecular clouds with intense CO emission in this region. Clouds are identified in an automated manner throughout the main part of the survey data for all CO emission peaks exceeding 10 K ($T_R^*$). Correlations between the size, velocity dispersion, virial mass, and the CO luminosity, for the molecular clouds in the Galactic center were shown. We diagnosed gravitational stabilities of identified clouds assuming that the disk clouds are nearly at the onset of gravitational instability. Most of the clouds and cloud complexes in the Galactic center are gravitationally stable, while some clouds with intense CO emission are gravitationally unstable.

A High Velocity Cloud near the Center of the Galaxy

We report the detection of a peculiar molecular cloud, CO 0.02-0.02, lying about 5' Galactic-east from the center of the Galaxy. (12)CO images taken with NRO 45 m telescope showed that it is relatively compact (about 3x4 pc^2) as well as having a very large velocity width (DV>=100 km s(-1)). The cloud has a virial mass about one order of magnitude larger than the LTE mass, 9E4 M(solar), indicating the cloud is apparently gravitationally unbound. New observations with the JCMT 15 m and the NRO 45 m telescope show that CO 0.02-0.02 is very bright in the CO J=3-2, and in the HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 lines. It appears that the environment may have an unusually high density and temperature, which may be related to the very broad CO line-width. We propose that CO 0.02-0.02 may have been accelerated, heated and compressed in a series of supernovae shocks which have occurred within the last (3-5)E4$ years.
