Partition Functions of Matrix Models as the First Special Functions of String Theory I. Finite Size Hermitean 1-Matrix Model

Even though matrix model partition functions do not exhaust the entire set of tau-functions relevant for string theory, they seem to be elementary building blocks for many others and they seem to properly capture the fundamental symplicial nature of quantum gravity and string theory. We propose to consider matrix model partition functions as new special functions. This means they should be investigated and put into some standard form, with no reference to particular applications. At the same time, the tables and lists of properties should be full enough to avoid discoveries of unexpected peculiarities in new applications. This is a big job, and the present paper is just a step in this direction. Here we restrict our consideration to the finite-size Hermitean 1-matrix model and concentrate mostly on its phase/branch structure arising when the partition function is considered as a D-module. We discuss the role of the CIV-DV prepotential (as generating a possible basis in the linear space of solutions to the Virasoro constraints, but with a lack of understanding of why and how this basis is distinguished) and evaluate first few multiloop correlators, which generalize semicircular distribution to the case of multitrace and non-planar correlators.

On Hopf-induced deformation of topological locus

We provide a very brief review of the description of colored invariants for the Hopf link in terms of characters, which need to be taken at a peculiar deformation of the topological locus, depending on one of the two representations associated with the two components of the link. Most important, we extend the description of this locus to conjugate and, generically, to composite representations and also define the "adjoint" Schur functions emerging in the dual description.

$(q,t)$-KZ equations for quantum toroidal algebra and Nekrasov partition functions on ALE spaces

We describe the general strategy for lifting the Wess-Zumino-Witten model from the level of one-loop Kac-Moody $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{g}})_k$ to generic quantum toroidal algebras. A nearly exhaustive presentation is given for the two series $U_{q,t}(\widehat{\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}}_1)$ and $U_{q,t}(\widehat{\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}}_n)$, when screenings do not exist and thus all the correlators are purely algebraic, i.e. do not include additional hypergeometric type integrations/summations. Generalizing the construction of the intertwiner (refined topological vertex) of the Ding-Iohara-Miki (DIM) algebra, we obtain the intertwining operators of the Fock representations of the quantum toroidal algebra of type $A_n$. The correlation functions of these operators satisfy the $(q,t)$-Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) equation, which features the ${\cal R}$-matrix. Matching with the Nekrasov function for the instanton counting on the ALE space is worked out explicitly. We also present an important application of the DIM formalism to the study of $6d$ gauge theories described by the double elliptic integrable systems. We show that the modular and periodicity properties of the gauge theories are neatly explained by the network matrix models providing solutions to the elliptic $(q,t)$-KZ equations.

Are Khovanov-Rozansky polynomials consistent with evolution in the space of knots?

$R$-coloured knot polynomials for $m$-strand torus knots $Torus_{[m,n]}$ are described by the Rosso-Jones formula, which is an example of evolution in $n$ with Lyapunov exponents, labelled by Young diagrams from $R^{\otimes m}$. This means that they satisfy a finite-difference equation (recursion) of finite degree. For the gauge group $SL(N)$ only diagrams with no more than $N$ lines can contribute and the recursion degree is reduced. We claim that these properties (evolution/recursion and reduction) persist for Khovanov-Rozansky (KR) polynomials, obtained by additional factorization modulo $1+{\bf t}$, which is not yet adequately described in quantum field theory. Also preserved is some weakened version of differential expansion, which is responsible at least for a simple relation between {\it reduced} and {\it unreduced} Khovanov polynomials. However, in the KR case evolution is incompatible with the mirror symmetry under the change $n\longrightarrow -n$, what can signal about an ambiguity in the KR factorization even for torus knots. }

Quantum Racah matrices up to level 3 and multicolored link invariants

This paper is a next step in the project of systematic description of colored knot and link invariants started in previous papers. In this paper, we managed to explicitly find the inclusive Racah matrices, i.e. the whole set of mixing matrices in channels $R_1\otimes R_2\otimes R_3\longrightarrow Q$ with all possible $Q$, for $|R|\leq 3$. The calculation is made possible by use of the highest weight method. The result allows one to evaluate and investigate colored polynomials for arbitrary 3-strand knots and links and to check the corresponding eigenvalue conjecture. Explicit answers for Racah matrices and colored polynomials for 3-strand knots up to 10 crossings are available at http://knotebook.org. Using the obtained inclusive Racah matrices, we also calculated the exclusive Racah matrices with the help of trick earlier suggested in the case of knots. This method is proved to be effective and gives the exclusive Racah matrices earlier obtained by another method.

Eigenvalue hypothesis for multi-strand braids

Computing polynomial form of the colored HOMFLY-PT for non-arborescent knots obtained from three or more strand braids is still an open problem. One of the efficient methods suggested for the three-strand braids relies on the eigenvalue hypothesis which uses the Yang-Baxter equation to express the answer through the eigenvalues of the ${\cal R}$-matrix. In this paper, we generalize the hypothesis to higher number of strands in the braid where commuting relations of non-neighbouring $\mathcal{R}$ matrices are also incorporated. By solving these equations, we determine the explicit form for $\mathcal{R}$-matrices and the inclusive Racah matrices in terms of braiding eigenvalues (for matrices of size up to 6 by 6). For comparison, we briefly discuss the highest weight method for four-strand braids carrying fundamental and symmetric rank two $SU_q(N)$ representation. Specifically, we present all the inclusive Racah matrices for representation $[2]$ and compare with the matrices obtained from eigenvalue hypothesis.

Checks of integrality properties in topological strings

Tests of the integrality properties of a scalar operator in topological strings on a resolved conifold background or orientifold of conifold backgrounds have been performed for arborescent knots and some non-arborescent knots. The recent results on polynomials for those knots colored by SU(N) and SO(N) adjoint representations are useful to verify Marino's integrality conjecture up to two boxes in the Young diagram. In this paper, we review the salient aspects of the integrality properties and tabulate explicitly for an arborescent knot and a link. In our knotebook website, we have put these results for over 100 prime knots available in Rolfsen table and some links. The first application of the obtained results, an observation of the Gaussian distribution of the LMOV invariants is also reported.

Knot polynomials for twist satellites

We begin the systematic study of knot polynomials for the twist satellites of a knot, when its strand is substituted by a 2-strand twist knot. This is a generalization of cabling (torus satellites), when the substitute of the strand was a torus knot. We describe a general decomposition of satellite's colored HOMFLY in those of the original knot, where contributing are adjoint and other representations from the "$E_8$-sector", what makes the story closely related to Vogel's universality. We also point out a problem with lifting the decomposition rule to the level of superpolynomials -- it looks like such rule, if any, should be different for positive and negative twistings.

On universal knot polynomials

We present a universal knot polynomials for 2- and 3-strand torus knots in adjoint representation, by universalization of appropriate Rosso-Jones formula. According to universality, these polynomials coincide with adjoined colored HOMFLY and Kauffman polynomials at SL and SO/Sp lines on Vogel's plane, and give their exceptional group's counterparts on exceptional line. We demonstrate that [m,n]=[n,m] topological invariance, when applicable, take place on the entire Vogel's plane. We also suggest the universal form of invariant of figure eight knot in adjoint representation, and suggest existence of such universalization for any knot in adjoint and its descendant representation. Properties of universal polynomials and applications of these results are discussed.

Universal Racah matrices and adjoint knot polynomials. I. Arborescent knots

By now it is well established that the quantum dimensions of descendants of the adjoint representation can be described in a universal form, independent of a particular family of simple Lie algebras. The Rosso-Jones formula then implies a universal description of the adjoint knot polynomials for torus knots, which in particular unifies the HOMFLY (SU_N) and Kauffman (SO_N) polynomials. For E_8 the adjoint representation is also fundamental. We suggest to extend the universality from the dimensions to the Racah matrices and this immediately produces a unified description of the adjoint knot polynomials for all arborescent (double-fat) knots, including twist, 2-bridge and pretzel. Technically we develop together the universality and the "eigenvalue conjecture", which expresses the Racah and mixing matrices through the eigenvalues of the quantum R-matrix, and for dealing with the adjoint polynomials one has to extend it to the previously unknown 6x6 case. The adjoint polynomials do not distinguish between mutants and therefore are not very efficient in knot theory, however, universal polynomials in higher representations can probably be better in this respect.

Orthogonal Polynomials in Mathematical Physics

This is a review of ($q$-)hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials and their relation to representation theory of quantum groups, to matrix models, to integrable theory, and to knot theory. We discuss both continuous and discrete orthogonal polynomials and consider their various generalizations. The review also includes the orthogonal polynomials into a generic framework of ($q$-)hypergeometric functions and their integral representations. In particular, this gives rise to relations with conformal blocks of the Virasoro algebra.

Generalized hypergeometric series for Racah matrices in rectangular representations

One of spectacular results in mathematical physics is the expression of Racah matrices for symmetric representations of the quantum group $SU_q(2)$ through the Askey-Wilson polynomials, associated with the $q$-hypergeometric functions ${_4ϕ_3}$. Recently it was shown that this is in fact the general property of symmetric representations, valid for arbitrary $SU_q(N)$, at least for exclusive Racah matrices $\bar S$. The natural question then is what substitutes the conventional $q$-hypergeometric polynomials when representations are more general? New advances in the theory of matrices $\bar S$, provided by the study of differential expansions of knot polynomials, suggest that these are multiple sums over Young sub-diagrams of the one, which describes the original representation of $SU_q(N)$. A less trivial fact is that the entries of the sum are not just the factorized combinations of quantum dimensions, as in the ordinary hypergeometric series, but involve non-factorized quantities, like the skew characters and their further generalizations -- as well as associated additional summations with the Littlewood-Richardson weights.

Cut and join operator ring in Aristotelian tensor model

Recent advancement of rainbow tensor models based on their superintegrability (manifesting itself as the existence of an explicit expression for a generic Gaussian correlator) has allowed us to bypass the long-standing problem seen as the lack of eigenvalue/determinant representation needed to establish the KP/Toda integrability. As the mandatory next step, we discuss in this paper how to provide an adequate designation to each of the connected gauge-invariant operators that form a double coset, which is required to cleverly formulate a tree-algebra generalization of the Virasoro constraints. This problem goes beyond the enumeration problem per se tied to the permutation group, forcing us to introduce a few gauge fixing procedures to the coset. We point out that the permutation-based labeling, which has proven to be relevant for the Gaussian averages is, via interesting complexity, related to the one based on the keystone trees, whose algebra will provide the tensor counterpart of the Virasoro algebra for matrix models. Moreover, our simple analysis reveals the existence of nontrivial kernels and co-kernels for the cut operation and for the join operation respectively that prevent a straightforward construction of the non-perturbative RG-complete partition function and the identification of truly independent time variables. We demonstrate these problems by the simplest non-trivial Aristotelian RGB model with one complex rank-3 tensor, studying its ring of gauge-invariant operators, generated by the keystone triple with the help of four operations: addition, multiplication, cut and join.

Factorization of differential expansion for antiparallel double-braid knots

Continuing the quest for exclusive Racah matrices, which are needed for evaluation of colored arborescent-knot polynomials in Chern-Simons theory, we suggest to extract them from a new kind of a double-evolution -- that of the antiparallel double-braids, which is a simple two-parametric family of two-bridge knots, generalizing the one-parametric family of twist knots. In the case of rectangular representations $R=[r^s]$ we found an evidence that the corresponding differential expansion miraculously factorizes and can be obtained from that for the twist knots. This reduces the problem of rectangular exclusive Racah to constructing the answers for just a few twist knots. We develop a recent conjecture on the structure of differential expansion for the simplest members of this family (the trefoil and the figure-eight knot) and provide the exhaustive answer for the first unknown case of $R=[33]$. The answer includes HOMFLY of arbitrary twist and double-braid knots and Racah matrices $\bar S$ and $S$ -- what allows to calculate $[33]$-colored polynomials for arbitrary arborescent (double-fat) knots. For generic rectangular representations described in detail are only the contributions of the single- and two-floor pyramids, the way to proceed is explicitly illustrated by the examples of $R=[44]$ and $R=[55]$. This solves the difficult part of the problem, but the last tedious step towards explicit formulas for generic exclusive rectangular Racah matrices still remains to be made.

On $6j$-symbols for symmetric representations of $U_q(\mathfrak{su}_N)$

Explicit expressions are found for the $6j$ symbols in symmetric representations of quantum $\mathfrak{su}_N$ through appropriate hypergeometric Askey-Wilson (q-Racah) polynomials. This generalizes the well-known classical formulas for $U_q(\mathfrak{su}_2)$ and provides a link to conformal theories and matrix models.

Differential expansion for link polynomials

The differential expansion is one of the key structures reflecting group theory properties of colored knot polynomials, which also becomes an important tool for evaluation of non-trivial Racah matrices. This makes highly desirable its extension from knots to links, which, however, requires knowledge of the $6j$-symbols, at least, for the simplest triples of non-coincident representations. Based on the recent achievements in this direction, we conjecture a shape of the differential expansion for symmetrically-colored links and provide a set of examples. Within this study, we use a special framing that is an unusual extension of the topological framing from knots to links. In the particular cases of Whitehead and Borromean rings links, the differential expansions are different from the previously discovered.

Modular properties of 6d (DELL) systems

If super-Yang-Mills theory possesses the exact conformal invariance, there is an additional modular invariance under the change of the complex bare charge $τ= \fracθ{2π}+ \frac{4π\imath}{g^2}\longrightarrow -\frac{1}τ$. The low-energy Seiberg-Witten prepotential ${\cal F}(a)$, however, is not explicitly invariant, because the flat moduli also change $a \longrightarrow a_D = \partial{\cal F}/\partial a$. In result, the prepotential is not a modular form and depends also on the anomalous Eisenstein series $E_2$. This dependence is usually described by the universal MNW modular anomaly equation. We demonstrate that, in the $6d$ $SU(N)$ theory with {\it two} independent modular parameters $τ$ and $\hat τ$, the modular anomaly equation changes, because the modular transform of $τ$ is accompanied by an ($N$-dependent!) shift of $\hatτ$ and vice versa. This is a new peculiarity of double-elliptic systems, which deserves further investigation.
