Analyzing polarization swings in 3C 279

Quasar 3C 279 is known to exhibit episodes of optical polarization angle rotation. We present new, well-sampled optical polarization data for 3C 279 and introduce a method to distinguish between random and deterministic electric vector position angle (EVPA) variations. We observe EVPA rotations in both directions with different amplitudes and find that the EVPA variation shows characteristics of both random and deterministic cases. Our analysis indicates that the EVPA variation is likely dominated by a random process in the low brightness state of the jet and by a deterministic process in the flaring state.

Spectral optical monitoring of a double-peaked emission line AGN Arp 102B: I. Variability of spectral lines and continuum

Here we present results of the long-term (1987-2010) optical spectral monitoring of the broad line radio galaxy Arp 102B, a prototype of active galactic nuclei with the double-peaked broad emission lines, usually assumed to be emitted from an accretion disk. To explore the structure of the broad line region (BLR), we analyze the light curves of the broad Hαand Hβlines and the continuum flux. We aim to estimate the dimensions of the broad-line emitting regions and the mass of the central black hole. We use the CCF to find lags between the lines and continuum variations. We investigate in more details the correlation between line and continuum fluxes, moreover we explore periodical variations of the red-to-blue line flux ratio using Lomb-Scargle periodograms. The line and continuum light curves show several flare-like events. The fluxes in lines and in the continuum are not showing a big change (around 20%) during the monitoring period. We found a small correlation between the line and continuum flux variation, that may indicate that variation in lines has weak connection with the variation of the central photoionization source. In spite of a low line-continuum correlation, using several methods, we estimated a time lag for Hβaround 20 days. The correlation between the Hβand Hαflux variation is significantly higher than between lines and continuum. During the monitoring period, the Hβand Hαlines show double-peaked profiles and we found an indication for a periodical oscillation in the red-to-blue flux ratio of the Hαline. The estimated mass of the central black hole is \sim 1.1 \times 10^8 M\odot that is in an agreement with the mass estimated from the M-σ* relation.

PGC 60020: a Polar-Ring Galaxy

We present an analysis of new observations of a peculiar galaxy PGC 60020, obtained with the 6-m BTA telescope of the SAO RAS with a multimode SCORPIO instrument. The observational data includes direct images in the B, V, Rc photometric bands and long-slit spectra in the red range (the Ha line spectral region). Based on the analysis of these data it was found that PGC 60020 belongs to the type of classical polar-ring galaxies. Its main body is an S0 galaxy, around the major axis of which a disk of gas, dust and stars is rotating in the plane inclined at an angle of about 60 degrees to the galactic plane. A loop-shaped structure stretches from the southern part of this disk (possibly, a tidal tail) towards the SDSS J171745.58+404137.1 galaxy.

Spectral Optical Monitoring of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564

We present the results of a long-term (1999--2010) spectral optical monitoring campaign of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) Ark 564, which shows a strong Fe II line emission in the optical. This AGN is a narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, a group of AGNs with specific spectral characteristics. We analyze the light curves of the permitted Ha, Hb, optical Fe II line fluxes, and the continuum flux in order to search for a time lag between them. Additionally, in order to estimate the contribution of iron lines from different multiplets, we fit the Hb and Fe II lines with a sum of Gaussian components. We found that during the monitoring period the spectral variation (F_max/F_min) of Ark 564 was between 1.5 for Ha to 1.8 for the Fe II lines. The correlation between the Fe II and Hb flux variations is of higher significance than that of Ha and Hb (whose correlation is almost absent). The permitted-line profiles are Lorentzian-like, and did not change shape during the monitoring period. We investigated, in detail, the optical Fe II emission and found different degrees of correlation between the Fe II emission arising from different spectral multiplets and the continuum flux. The relatively weak and different degrees of correlations between permitted lines and continuum fluxes indicate a rather complex source of ionization of the broad line emission region.

Study of the structure and kinematics of the NGC 7465/64/63 triplet galaxies

This paper is devoted to the analysis of new observational data for the group of galaxies NGC 7465/64/63, which were obtained at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) with the multimode instrument SCORPIO and the Multi Pupil Fiber Spectrograph. For one of group members (NGC 7465) the presence of a polar ring was suspected. Large-scale brightness distributions, velocity and velocity dispersion fields of the ionized gas for all three galaxies as well as line-of-sight velocity curves on the basis of emission and absorption lines and a stellar velocity field in the central region for NGC 7465 were constructed. As a result of the analysis of the obtained information, we revealed an inner stellar disk (r ~ 0.5 kpc) and a warped gaseous disk in addition to the main stellar disk, in NGC 7465. On the basis of the joint study of photometric and spectral data it was ascertained that NGC 7464 is the irregular galaxy of the IrrI type, whose structural and kinematic peculiarities resulted most likely from the gravitational interaction with NGC 7465. The velocity field of the ionized gas of NGC 7463 turned out typical for spiral galaxies with a bar, and the bending of outer parts of its disk could arise owing to the close encounter with one of galaxies of the environment.

Spectral optical monitoring of 3C 390.3 in 1995-2007: II. Variability of the spectral line parameters

A study of the variability of the broad emission-line parameters of 3C390.3, an active galaxy with the double-peaked emission-line profiles, is presented. We give a detail analysis of variation in the broad Ha and Hb profiles, the ratios, and the Balmer decrement of different line segments. Studying the variability of the line profiles we explore the disk structure, that is assumed to emit the broad double-peaked Ha and Hb emission lines. We divided the observed spectra in two periods (before and after the outburst in 2002) and analyzed separately the variation in these two periods. First we analyzed the spectral emission-line profiles of Ha and Hb, measuring the peak positions. Then, we divided lines into several segments, and we measured the line-segment fluxes. The Balmer decrement variation for total Ha and Hb fluxes, as well as for the line segments has been investigated and discussed. We modeled the line parameters variation using an accretion disk model. We compared the variability in the observed line parameters with the disk model predictions and found that the variation in line profiles and in line segments corresponds to the emission of a disk-like BLR. But, also there is probably one additional emission component that contributes to the Ha and Hb line center. We found that the variation in the line profiles is caused by the variation in the parameters of the disk-like BLR, first of all in the inner (outer) radius which can well explain the line parameter variations in the Period I. The Balmer decrement across the line profile has a bell-like shape, and it is affected not only by physical processes in the disk, but also by different emitting disk dimension of the Ha and Hb line. The geometry of the BLR of 3C390.3 seems to be very complex, and inflows/outflows might be present, but it is evident that the broad line region with disk-like geometry has dominant emission.

Observational evidence for the link between the variable optical continuum and the subparsec-scale jet of the radio galaxy 3C 390.3

The mechanism and the region of generation of variable continuum emission are poorly understood for radio-loud AGN because of a complexity of the nuclear region. High-resolution radio VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) observations allow zooming into a subparsec-scale region of the jet in the radio-loud galaxy 3C 390.3. We combined the radio VLBI and the optical data covering the time period of 14 years to look for a link between optical flares and parsec-scale jet. We identify two stationary and nine moving radio features in the innermost subparsec-scale region of the jet. All nine ejections are associated with optical flares. We found a significant correlation (at a confidence level of $>99.99%$) between the ejected jet components and optical continuum flares. The epochs at which the moving knots pass through the location of a stationary radio feature and the optical light curve reaches the maximum are correlated. The radio events follow the maxima of optical flares with the mean time delay of $0.10\pm0.04$ years. This correlation can be understood if the variable optical continuum emission is generated in the innermost part of the jet. A possible mechanism of the energy release is the ejection of knots of high-energy electrons that are accelerated in the jet flow and generate flares of synchrotron continuum emission in the wide range of frequencies from radio to X-ray bands. In this scenario, the beamed optical continuum emission from the jet and counterjet ionizes a gas in a subrelativistic outflow surrounding the jet, which results in a formation of two outflowing conical regions with broad emission lines (in addition to the conventional broad line region around the central nucleus).

Spectral optical monitoring of 3C390.3 in 1995-2007: I. Light curves and flux variation of the continuum and broad lines

Here we present the results of the long-term (1995-2007) spectral monitoring of the broad line radio galaxy \object{3C~390.3}, a well known AGN with the double peaked broad emission lines, usually assumed to be emitted from an accretion disk. To explore dimensions and structure of the BLR, we analyze the light curves of the broad H$α$ and H$β$ line fluxes and the continuum flux. In order to find changes in the BLR, we analyze the H$α$ and H$β$ line profiles, as well as the change in the line profiles during the monitoring period. First we try to find a periodicity in the continuum and H$β$ light curves, finding that there is a good chance for quasi-periodical oscillations. Using the line shapes and their characteristics (as e.g. peaks separation and their intensity ratio, or FWHM) of broad H$β$ and H$α$ lines, we discuss the structure of the BLR. Also, we cross-correlate the continuum flux with H$β$ and H$α$ lines to find dimensions of the BLR. We found that during the monitoring period the broad emission component of the H$α$ and H$β$ lines, and the continuum flux varied by a factor of $\approx $4-5. Also, we detected different structure in the line profiles of H$α$ and H$β$. It seems that an additional central component is present and superposed to the disk emission. In the period of high activity (after 2002), H$β$ became broader than H$α$ and red wing of H$β$ was higher than the one of H$α$. We found time lags of $\sim$95 days between the continuum and H$β$ flux, and about 120 days between the continuum and H$α$ flux. Variation in the line profiles, as well as correlation between the line and continuum flux during the monitoring period is in the favor of the disk origin of the broad lines with the possible contribution of some additional region and/or some kind of perturbation in the disk.

The Eastern Filament of W50

We present new spectral (FPI and long-slit) data on the Eastern optical filament of the well known radionebula W50 associated with SS433. We find that on sub-parsec scales different emission lines are emitted by different regions with evidently different physical conditions. Kinematical properties of the ionized gas show evidence for moderately high (V ~ 100 km/s) supersonic motions. [OIII]5007 emission is found to be multi-component and differs from lower-excitation [SII]6717 line both in spatial and kinematical properties. Indirect evidence for very low characteristic densities of the gas (n ~ 0.1cm^{-3}) is found. We propose radiative (possibly incomplete) shock waves in low-density, moderately high metallicity gas as the most probable candidate for the power source of the optical filament. Apparent nitrogen over-abundance is better understood if the location of W50 in the Galaxy is taken into account.

Long-term variability of the optical spectra of NGC 4151: II. Evolution of the broad Ha and Hb emission-line profiles

Results of the long-term (11 years, from 1996 to 2006) H$α$ and H$β$ line variations of the active galactic nucleus of NGC 4151 are presented. High quality spectra (S/N>50 and R~8A) of H$α$ and H$β$ were investigated. We analyzed line profile variations during monitoring period. Comparing the line profiles of H$α$ and H$β$, we studied different details (bumps, absorption features) in the line profiles. The variations of the different H$α$ and H$β$ line profile segments have been investigated. Also, we analyzed the Balmer decrement for whole line and for line segments. We found that the line profiles were strongly changing during the monitoring period, showing blue and red asymmetries. This indicates a complex BLR geometry of NGC 4151 with, at least, three kinematically distinct regions: one that contributes to the blue line wing, one to the line core and one to the red line wing. Such variation can be caused by an accelerating outflow starting very close to the black hole, where the red part may come from the region {closer to the black hole than the blue part, which is coming} from the region having the highest outflow velocities. Taking into account the fact that the BLR of NGC 4151 has a complex geometry (probably affected by an outflow) and that a portion of the broad line emission seems to have not a pure photoionization origin, one can ask the question whether the study of the BLR by reverberation mapping may be valid in the case of this galaxy.

Long term variability of the Broad Emission Line profiles in AGN

Results of a long-term monitoring ($\gtrsim 10$ years) of the broad line and continuum fluxes of three Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), 3C 390.3, NGC 4151, and NGC 5548, are presented. We analyze the H$α$ and H$β$ profile variations during the monitoring period and study different details (as bumps, absorption bands) which can indicate structural changes in the Broad Line Region (BLR). The BLR dimensions are estimated using the time lags between the continuum and the broad lines flux variations. We find that in the case of 3C 390.3 and NGC 5548 a disk geometry can explain both the broad line profiles and their flux variations, while the BLR of NGC 4151 seems more complex and is probably composed of two or three kinematically different regions.

SDSS J092609.45+334304.1: a nearby unevolved galaxy

We present the results of observations of the very low surface brightness (VLSB) dwarf galaxy SDSS J092609.45+334304.1 with extreme parameters which indicate its unevolved status. Namely, its value of O/H, derived as an average of that in two adjacent HII regions at the NE edge of the disc, corresponds to the parameter 12+log(O/H)=7.12+-0.02, which is amongst two lowest known. The total HI flux measurement obtained with the Nancay Radio Telescope and the photometric results imply that the galaxy ratio M(HI)/L_B ~3.0, is among the top known in the Local Volume. The galaxy is situated in the region of a nearby underdense region known as the Lynx-Cancer void, where other, unevolved galaxies, including DDO 68, HS 0832+3542 and SAO 0822+3545, are known to be present. The total mass of this almost edge-on VLSB galaxy is ~8.3 times larger than its baryonic mass, implying the dynamical dominance of Dark Matter (DM) halo. The (u-g), (g-r) colours of outer parts of this galaxy are consistent with the ages of its main stellar population of 1--3 Gyr. Thanks to the galaxy isolation, the small effect of current or recent star formation (SF), its proximity and rather large HI flux (~2.5 Jy km/s), this VLSB dwarf is a good laboratory for the detailed study of DM halo properties through HI kinematics and the star formation processes in very metal-poor low surface density environment. This finding, along with the discovery of other unusual dwarf galaxies in this void, provides evidence for the relation between galaxy evolution and its very low-density environment for the baryonic mass range of 10^{8} to 10^{9} Mo. This relation seems to be consistent with that expected in the LambdaCDM models of galaxy and structure formation.

Discovery of a massive variable star with Z=Zo/36 in the galaxy DDO 68

The Local Volume dwarf galaxy DDO 68, from the spectroscopy of its two brightest HII regions (Knots 1 and 2) was designated as the second most metal-poor star-forming galaxy [12+log(O/H)=7.14]. In the repeated spectral observations in 2008 January with the 6-m telescope (BTA) of the HII region Knot 3 [having 12+log(O/H)=7.10+-0.06], we find a strong evidence of a transient event related to a massive star evolution. From the follow-up observation with the higher spectral resolution in 2008 February, we confirm this phenomenon, and give parameters of its emission-line spectrum comprising of Balmer HI and HeI lines. The luminosities of the strongest transient lines (Ha, Hb) are of a few 10^36 erg s^-1. We also detected an additional continuum component in the new spectrum of Knot 3, which displays the spectral energy distribution raising to ultraviolet. The estimate of the flux of this continuum leads us to its absolute V-band magnitude of ~-7.1. Based on the spectral properties of this transient component, we suggest that it is related to an evolved massive star of luminous blue variable type with Z=Zo/36. We briefly discuss observational constraints on parameters of this unique (in the aspect of the record low metallicity of the progenitor massive star) event and propose several lines of its study.

Long-term variability of the optical spectra of NGC 4151: I. Light curves and flux correlations

Results of a long-term spectral monitoring of the active galactic nucleus of NGC 4151 are presented (11 years, from 1996 to 2006). High quality spectra (S/N>50 in the continuum near Halpha and Hbeta) were obtained in the spectral range ~4000 to 7500 Å, with a resolution between 5 and 15 A, using the 6-m and the 1-m SAO's telescopes (Russia), the GHAO's 2.1-m telescope (Cananea, Mexico), and the OAN-SPM's 2.1-m telescope (San-Pedro, Mexico). The observed fluxes of the Halpha, Hbeta, Hgamma and HeII emission lines and of the continuum at the observed wavelength 5117 A, were corrected for the position angle, the seeing and the aperture effects. We found that the continuum and line fluxes varied strongly (up to a factor 6) during the monitoring period. The emission was maximum in 1996-1998, and there were two minima, in 2001 and in 2005. The Halpha, Hgamma and He II fluxes were well correlated with the Hbeta flux. We considered three characteristic periods during which the Hbeta and Halpha profiles were similar: 1996-1999, 2000-2001 and 2002-2006. The line to continuum flux ratios were different; in particular during the first period, the lines were not correlated with the continuum and saturated at high fluxes. In the second and third period, where the continuum flux was small, the Halpha and Hbeta fluxes were well correlated to the continuum flux, meaning that the ionizing continuum was a good extrapolation of the optical continuum. The CCFs are often asymmetrical and the time lags between the lines and the continuum are badly defined indicating the presence of a complex BLR, with dimensions from 1 to 50 light-days.

Synchrotron superbubble in the galaxy IC10: the ionized gas structure, kinematics, and emission spectrum

We have investigated the structure, kinematics, and emission spectrum of the ionized gas in the synchrotron superbubble in the irregular galaxy IC 10 based on observations with the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope with the SCORPIO focal reducer in three modes: direct imaging in the [SII](6717+6731)A lines, long-slit spectroscopy, and spectroscopy with a scanning Fabry--Perot interferometer. We have identified a bright (in the [SII] lines) filamentary optical shell and determined its expansion velocity, mass, and kinetic energy. The nature of the object is discussed.

Andromeda IV: a new Local Volume very metal-poor galaxy

And IV is a low-surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxy at the distance of 6.1 Mpc, projecting close to M 31. In this paper the results of spectroscopy of And IV the two brightest HII regions with the SAO 6-m telescope (BTA) are presented. In both of them the faint line [OIII]4363 was detected that allowed us to determine their O/H by the classical T_e method. Their values of 12+log(O/H) are equal to 7.49+-0.06 and 7.55+-0.23, respectively. The comparison of these direct O/H determinations with the two most reliable semi-empirical and empirical methods shows their good consistency. For And IV absolute blue magnitude of M_B=-12.6, our value of O/H corresponds well to the `standard' relation between O/H and L_B for dwarf irregular galaxies (DIGs). And IV appears to be a new representative of the extremely metal-deficient gas-rich galaxies in the Local Volume. The very large range of M(HI) for LSB galaxies with close metallicities and luminosities indicates that the simple models of LSBG chemical evolution are too limited to predict such striking diversity.

Probing the physical properties of the NGC 5548 Broad Line Region using Balmer lines

We investigate the physical characteristics of the Broad Line Region (BLR) of NGC 5548 using the Boltzmann plot (BP) method, that we applied on the Balmer lines observed from 1996 to 2004. We find that variability earlier detected in the lines, is also present in the temperature parameter A, obtained from the BP method. Using the BP temperature parameter A to calculate temperature, we find that the average temperature for the considered period was T$\approx$ 10000 K, and that varies from 5000 K (in 2002) to 15000 K (in 1998). This variation correlates with the AGN-component of the optical continuum flux (r=0.85) and may indicate the existence of an accretion disc in the BLR of NGC 5548.
