Absolute calibration of photodetectors: photocurrent multiplication versus photocurrent subtraction

We report testing of the new absolute method of photodetectors calibration based on the difference-signal measurement for two-mode squeezed vacuum by comparison with the traditional absolute method based on the coincidence counting. Using low-gain parametric down conversion we have measured the quantum efficiency of a counting detector by both methods. The difference-signal method was adapted for the counting detectors by taking into account the dead-time effect.

Comparative Test of Two Methods of Quantum Efficiency Absolute Measurement Based on Squeezed Vacuum Direct Detection

We realize and test in experiment a method recently proposed for measuring absolute quantum efficiency of analog photodetectors. Similarly to the traditional (Klyshko) method of absolute calibration, the new one is based on the direct detection of two-mode squeezed vacuum at the output of a traveling wave OPA. However, in the new method one measures the difference-photocurrent variance rather than the correlation function of photocurrents (number of coincidences), which makes the technique applicable for high-gain OPA. In this work we test the new method versus the traditional one for the case of photon-counting detectors where both techniques are valid.

Multiphoton ghost imaging with classical light

One of the possible types of n-th order ghost imaging is experimentally performed using multi-photon (higher-order) intensity correlations of pseudothermal light. It is shown that although increasing the order of intensity correlations leads to the growth of ghost imaging visibility, it at the same time reduces the signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore, ghost imaging with thermal light is optimal in the second order in the intensity.

High-visibility multi-photon interference of Hanbury Brown - Twiss type for classical light

Difference-phase (or Hanbury Brown - Twiss type) intensity interference of classical light is considered in higher orders in the intensity. It is shown that, while the visibility of sum-phase (NOON-type) interference for classical sources drops with the order of interference, the visibility of difference-phase interference has opposite behavior. For three-photon and four-photon interference of two coherent sources, the visibility can be as high as 81.8% and 94.4%, respectively. High-visibility three-photon and four-photon interference of space-time and polarization types has been observed in experiment, for both coherent and pseudo-thermal light.

High-Visibility Multi-Photon Interference of Classical Light

It is shown that the visibility of multi-photon interference for classical sources grows rapidly with the order of interference. For three-photon and four-photon interference of two coherent sources, the visibility can be as high as 81.9% and 94.4%, respectively, - much higher than the 'classical limit' of two-photon interference (50%). High-visibility three-photon and four-photon interference has been observed in experiment, for both coherent and pseudo-thermal light.

Mapping of periodically poled crystals via spontaneous parametric down-conversion

A new method for characterization of periodically poled crystals is developed based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The method is demonstrated on crystals of Y:LiNbO3, Mg:Y:LiNbO3 with non-uniform periodically poled structures, obtained directly under Czochralski growth procedure and designed for application of OPO in the mid infrared range. Infrared dispersion of refractive index, effective working periods and wavelengths of OPO were determined by special treatment of frequency-angular spectra of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the visible range. Two-dimensional mapping via spontaneous parametric down-conversion is proposed for characterizing spatial distribution of bulk quasi-phase matching efficiency across the input window of a periodically poled sample.

Statistical Reconstruction of Qutrits

We discuss a procedure of measurement followed by the reproduction of the quantum state of a three-level optical system - a frequency- and spatially degenerate two-photon field. The method of statistical estimation of the quantum state based on solving the likelihood equation and analyzing the statistical properties of the obtained estimates is developed. Using the root approach of estimating quantum states, the initial two-photon state vector is reproduced from the measured fourth moments in the field . The developed approach applied to quantum states reconstruction is based on the amplitudes of mutually complementary processes. Classical algorithm of statistical estimation based on the Fisher information matrix is generalized to the case of quantum systems obeying Bohr's complementarity principle. It has been experimentally proved that biphoton-qutrit states can be reconstructed with the fidelity of 0.995-0.999 and higher.
