An integrable hierarchy with a perturbed Henon-Heiles system

We consider an integrable scalar partial differential equation (PDE) that is second order in time. By rewriting it as a system and applying the Wahlquist-Estabrook prolongation algebra method, we obtain the zero curvature representation of the equation, which leads to a Lax representation in terms of an energy-dependent Schrödinger spectral problem of the type studied by Antonowicz and Fordy. The solutions of this PDE system, and of its associated hierarchy of commuting flows, display weak Painlevé behaviour, i.e. they have algebraic branching. By considering the travelling wave solutions of the next flow in the hierarchy, we find an integrable perturbation of the case (ii) Henon-Heiles system which has the weak Painlevé property. We perform separation of variables for this generalized Henon-Heiles system, and describe the corresponding solutions of the PDE.

Singularity confinement for maps with the Laurent property

The singularity confinement test is very useful for isolating integrable cases of discrete-time dynamical systems, but it does not provide a sufficient criterion for integrability. Quite recently a new property of the bilinear equations appearing in discrete soliton theory has been noticed: the iterates of such equations are Laurent polynomials in the initial data. A large class of non-integrable mappings of the plane are presented which both possess this Laurent property and have confined singularities.

Tau-functions and special solutions in a coupled Painlevé system

For a pair of coupled Painlevé equations obtained as a similarity reduction of the Hirota-Satsuma systems we describe special parameter-families of solutions given in terms of mixtures of rational and Airy functions, and in terms of a second Painlevé transcendent. The tau-functions associated to some of these solutions are also given explicitly.

O(n) invariant solutions of Abreu's equation

We consider a fourth order partial differential equation in n-dimensional space introduced by Abreu in the context of Kähler metrics on toric orbifolds. Similarity solutions depending only on the radial coordinate in R^n are determined in terms of a second order ordinary differential equation. A local asymptotic analysis of solutions in the neighbourhood of singular points is carried out. The integrability (or otherwise) of Abreu's equation is discussed.

On the non-integrability of a fifth order equation with integrable two-body dynamics

We consider the fifth order partial differential equation (PDE) $u_{4x,t}-5u_{xxt}+4u_t+uu_{5x}+2u_xu_{4x}-5uu_{3x}-10u_xu_{xx}+12uu_x=0$, which is a generalization of the integrable Camassa-Holm equation. The fifth order PDE has exact solutions in terms of an arbitrary number of superposed pulsons, with geodesic Hamiltonian dynamics that is known to be integrable in the two-body case N=2. Numerical simulations show that the pulsons are stable, dominate the initial value problem and scatter elastically. These characteristics are reminiscent of solitons in integrable systems. However, after demonstrating the non-existence of a suitable Lagrangian or bi-Hamiltonian structure, and obtaining negative results from Painlevé analysis and the Wahlquist-Estabrook method, we assert that the fifth order PDE is not integrable.

Integrable and non-integrable equations with peakons

We consider a one-parameter family of non-evolutionary partial differential equations which includes the integrable Camassa-Holm equation and a new equation first isolated by Degasperis and Procesi. A Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulation is presented for the whole family of equations, and we discuss how this fits into a bi-Hamiltonian framework in the integrable cases. The Hamiltonian dynamics of peakons and some other special finite-dimensional reductions are also described.

A New Integrable Equation with Peakon Solutions

We consider a new partial differential equation, of a similar form to the Camassa-Holm shallow water wave equation, which was recently obtained by Degasperis and Procesi using the method of asymptotic integrability. We prove the exact integrability of the new equation by constructing its Lax pair, and we explain its connection with a negative flow in the Kaup-Kupershmidt hierarchy via a reciprocal transformation. The infinite sequence of conserved quantities is derived together with a proposed bi-Hamiltonian structure. The equation admits exact solutions in the form of a superposition of multi-peakons, and we describe the integrable finite-dimensional peakon dynamics and compare it with the analogous results for Camassa-Holm peakons.

Backlund transformations for the sl(2) Gaudin magnet

Elementary, one- and two-point, Backlund transformations are constructed for the generic case of the sl(2) Gaudin magnet. The spectrality property is used to construct these explicitly given, Poisson integrable maps which are time-discretizations of the continuous flows with any Hamiltonian from the spectral curve of the 2x2 Lax matrix.

Backlund transformations for many-body systems related to KdV

We present Backlund transformations (BTs) with parameter for certain classical integrable n-body systems, namely the many-body generalised Henon-Heiles, Garnier and Neumann systems. Our construction makes use of the fact that all these systems may be obtained as particular reductions (stationary or restricted flows) of the KdV hierarchy; alternatively they may be considered as examples of the reduced sl(2) Gaudin magnet. The BTs provide exact time-discretizations of the original (continuous) systems, preserving the Lax matrix and hence all integrals of motion, and satisfy the spectrality property with respect to the Backlund parameter.

Exact solutions of the associated Camassa-Holm equation

Recently the associated Camassa-Holm (ACH) equation, related to the Fuchssteiner-Fokas-Camassa-Holm equation by a hodograph transformation, was introduced by Schiff, who derived Bäcklund transformations by a loop group technique and used these to obtain some simple soliton and rational solutions. We show how the ACH equation is related to Schrödinger operators and the KdV hierarchy, and use this connection to obtain exact solutions (rational and N-soliton solutions). More generally, we show that solutions of ACH on a constant background can be obtained directly from the tau-functions of known solutions of the KdV hierarchy on a zero background. We also present exact solutions given by a particular case of the third Painlevé transcendent.
