Criticality in self-dual sine-Gordon models

We discuss the nature of criticality in the $β^2 = 2 πN$ self-dual extention of the sine-Gordon model. This field theory is related to the two-dimensional classical XY model with a N-fold degenerate symmetry-breaking field. We briefly overview the already studied cases $N=2,4$ and analyze in detail the case N=3 where a single phase transition in the three-state Potts universality class is expected to occur. The Z$_3$ infrared critical properties of the $β^2 = 6 π$ self-dual sine-Gordon model are derived using two non-perturbative approaches. On one hand, we map the model onto an integrable deformation of the Z$_4$ parafermion theory. The latter is known to flow to a massless Z$_3$ infrared fixed point. Another route is based on the connection with a chirally asymmetric, su(2)$_4$ $\otimes$ su(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model with anisotropic current-current interaction, where we explore the existence of a decoupling (Toulouse) point.

Intrinsic Coulomb blockade in multi-wall carbon nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes provide a new class of molecular wires that display new and exciting mesoscopic transport properties. We provide a detailed theoretical description for transport in multi-wall nanotubes, where both disorder and strong interactions are important. The interplay of both aspects leads to a particularly effective intrinsic Coulomb blockade for tunneling. The relation to recent experiments is discussed.

Bulk and boundary zero-bias anomaly in multi-wall carbon nanotubes

We compute the tunneling density of states of doped multi-wall nanotubes including disorder and electron-electron interactions. A non-conventional Coulomb blockade reflecting nonperturbative Altshuler-Aronov-Lee power-law zero-bias anomalies is found, in accordance with recent experimental results. The presence of a boundary implies a universal doubling of the boundary exponent in the diffusive limit.

Critical properties of the double-frequency sine-Gordon model with applications

We study the properties of the double-frequency sine--Gordon model in the vicinity of the Ising quantum phase transition displayed by this model. Using a mapping onto a generalised lattice quantum Ashkin-Teller model, we obtain critical and nearly-off-critical correlation functions of various operators. We discuss applications of the double-sine-Gordon model to one-dimensional physical systems, like spin chains in a staggered external field and interacting electrons in a staggered potential.

Bosonization and Strongly Correlated Systems

This volume provides a detailed account of bosonization. The first part of the book examines the technical aspects of bosonization including one-dimensional fermions, the Gaussian model, the structure of Hilbert space in conformal theories, Bose-Einstein condensation in two dimensions, non-Abelian bosonization, and the Ising and WZNW models. The second part presents applications of the bosonization technique to realistic models including the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, spin liquids in one dimension and the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with alternative exchange. The third part addresses the problems of quantum impurities. Chapters cover potential scattering, the X-ray edge problem, impurities in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids and the multi-channel Kondo problem.

Theory Of The One Dimensional SU(4) Spin-Orbital Model

The one-dimensional spin-orbital model is studied by means of Abelian bosonization. We derive the low-energy effective theory which enables us to study small deviations from the SU(4) symmetric point. We show that there exists a massless region with algebraically decaying correlation functions, $\sim \cos(π/{2a_0} x) x^{-3/2}$. When entering the massive phase, the system displays an approximate SO(6) enlarged symmetry with a dimerization type of ordering consisting in alternating spin and orbital singlets.

Crystal Distortion and the Two-Channel Kondo Effect

We study a simple model of the two-channel Kondo effect in a distorted crystal. This model is then used to investigate the interplay of the Kondo and Jahn-Teller effects, and also the Kondo effect in an impure crystal. We find that the Jahn-Teller interaction modifies the characteristic energy scale of the system below which non-Fermi-liquid properties of the model become apparent. The modified energy scale tends to zero as the limit of a purely static Jahn-Teller effect is approached. We find also that the non-Fermi-liquid properties of the quadrupolar Kondo effect are not stable against crystal distortion caused by impurities.
