Minimal Fillings of Finite Metric Spaces and Convex Polyhedra

Problem of minimal parametric generalized fillings of finite metric space $M$ (a version of optimal connection problem) leads to construction of a convex multidimensional polyhedra $W_G$ for each tree $G$ connecting $M$ chosen as type of the parametric filling. The weight of the parametric minimal filling can be found as maximum on $W_G$ of the special linear function corresponding to the distance vector of $M$. It is proved that the union of vertex sets of the polyhedra $W_G$ over all possible $G$ forms an extremal subset, i.e., coincides with the vertex set of its convex hull.

Gromov-Hausdorff Geometry of Metric Trees

In this paper, we study metric trees, without any finiteness restrictions. For subsets of such trees, a condition that guarantees that the Hausdorff and Gromov--Hausdorff distances from the subset to the entire metric tree are the same is obtained. This result allows to construct a new class of shortest geodesics (in the proper class of all metric spaces) connecting such subset of a metric tree with the tree itself. In particular, the technique elaborated is demonstrated on subsets of the real line.

Metric Space Recognition by Gromov-Hausdorff Distances to Simplexes

In the present paper a distinguishability of bounded metric spaces by the set of the Gromov--Hausdorff distances to so-called simplexes (metric spaces with unique non-zero distance) is investigated. It is easy to construct an example of non-isometric metric spaces such that the Gromov--Hausdorff distance between them vanishes. Such spaces are non-distinguishable, of course. But we give examples of non-distinguishable metric spaces, the Gromov--Hausdorff distance between which is non-zero. More over, we prove several sufficient and necessary conditions for metric spaces to be non-distinguishable.

Extendability of Metric Segments in Gromov--Hausdorff Distance

In this paper geometry of Gromov-Hausdorff distance on the class of all metric spaces considered up to an isometry is investigated. For this class continuous curves and their lengths are defined, and it is shown that the Gromov-Hausdorff distance is intrinsic. Besides, metric segments are considered, i.e., the classes of points lying between two given ones, and an extension problem of such segments beyond their end-points is considered.

The Gromov--Hausdorff Distance between Simplexes and Two-Distance Spaces

In the present paper we calculate the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between an arbitrary simplex (a metric space all whose non-zero distances are the same) and a finite metric space whose non-zero distances take two distinct values (so-called $2$-distance spaces). As a corollary, a complete solution to generalized Borsuk problem for the $2$-distance spaces is obtained. In addition, we derive formulas for the clique covering number and for the chromatic number of an arbitrary graph $G$ in terms of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between a simplex and an appropriate $2$-distance space constructed by the graph $G$.

Gromov--Hausdorff Distance to Simplexes

Geometric characteristics of metric spaces that appear in formulas of the Gromov--Hausdorff distances from these spaces to so-called simplexes, i.e., to the metric spaces, all whose non-zero distances are the same are studied. The corresponding calculations essentially use geometry of partitions of these spaces. In the finite case, it gives the lengths of minimal spanning trees. A similar theory for compact metric spaces was worked out previously. In the present paper we generalize those results to any bounded metric space, and also, we simplify some proofs.

Dual Linear Programming Problem and One-Dimensional Gromov Minimal Fillings of Finite Metric Spaces

The present paper is devoted to studying of minimal parametric fillings of finite metric spaces (a version of optimal connection problem) by methods of Linear Programming. The estimate on the multiplicity of multi-tours appearing in the formula of weight of minimal fillings is improved, an alternative proof of this formula is obtained, and also explicit formulas for finite spaces consisting of $5$ and $6$ points are derived.

Minimal Spanning Trees on Infinite Sets

Minimal spanning trees on infinite vertex sets are investigated. A criterion for minimality of a spanning tree having a finite length is obtained, which generalizes the corresponding classical result for finite sets. It is given an analytic description of the set of all infinite metric spaces which a minimal spanning tree exists for. A sufficient condition for a minimal spanning tree existence is obtained in terms of distances achievability between partitions elements of the metric space under consideration. Besides, a concept of locally minimal spanning tree is introduced, several properties of such trees are described, and relations of those trees with (globally) minimal spanning trees are investigated.

Non-homogeneous random walks, subdiffusive migration of cells and anomalous chemotaxis

This paper is concerned with a non-homogeneous in space and non-local in time random walk model for anomalous subdiffusive transport of cells. Starting with a Markov model involving a structured probability density function, we derive the non-local in time master equation and fractional equation for the probability of cell position. We show the structural instability of fractional subdiffusive equation with respect to the partial variations of anomalous exponent. We find the criteria under which the anomalous aggregation of cells takes place in the semi-infinite domain.

Optimal Networks

This mini-course was given in the First Yaroslavl Summer School on Discrete and Computational Geometry in August 2012, organized by International Delaunay Laboratory "Discrete and Computational Geometry" of Demidov Yaroslavl State University. The aim of this mini-course is to give an introduction in Optimal Networks theory. Optimal networks appear as solutions of the following natural problem: How to connect a finite set of points in a metric space in an optimal way? We cover three most natural types of optimal connection: spanning trees connection without additional road forks, shortest trees and locally shortest trees, and minimal fillings.

Steiner Ratio for Manifolds

The Steiner ratio characterizes the greatest possible deviation of the length of a minimal spanning tree from the length of the minimal Steiner tree. In this paper, estimates of the Steiner ratio on Riemannian manifolds are obtained. As a corollary, the Steiner ratio for flat tori, flat Klein bottles, and projective plane of constant positive curvature are computed. Steiner ratio - Steiner problem - Gilbert--Pollack conjecture - surfaces of constant curvature

Determination of Different Biological Factors on the Base of Dried Blood Spot Technology

It is well-known that distinct biological indices (analytes) have distinct variability. We try to use some mathematical algorithms to pick out a set of blood parameters which give an opportunity to retrieve the initial volume of the blood spotted, and use it to calculate exact concentrations of analyts interesting to a physician. For our analysis we used the database of biochemical blood parameters obtained in Russian Scientific Center of Roentgen-Radiology during 1995-2000, which includes more than 30000 of patients.

One-dimensional Gromov minimal filling

The present paper opens a new branch in the theory of variational problems with branching extremals, the investigation of one-dimensional minimal fillings of finite pseudo-metric spaces. On the one hand, this problem is a one-dimensional version of a generalization of Gromov's minimal fillings problem to the case of stratified manifolds (the filling in our case is a weighted graph). On the other hand, this problem is interesting in itself and also can be considered as a generalization of another classical problem, namely, the Steiner problem on the construction of a shortest network joining a given set of terminals. Besides the statement of the problem, we discuss several properties of the minimal fillings, describe minimal fillings of additive spaces, and state several conjectures. We also include some announcements concerning the very recent results obtained in our group, including a formula calculating the weight of the minimal filling for an arbitrary finite pseudo-metric space and the concept of pseudo-additive space which generalizes the classical concept of additive space. We hope that the theory of one-dimensional minimal fillings refreshes the interest in the Steiner problem and gives an opportunity to solve several long standing problems, such as the calculation of the Steiner ratio, in particular the verification of the Gilbert--Pollack conjecture on the Steiner ratio of the Euclidean plane.

The Length of a Minimal Tree With a Given Topology: generalization of Maxwell Formula

The classic Maxwell formula calculates the length of a planar locally minimal binary tree in terms of coordinates of its boundary vertices and directions of incoming edges. However, if an extreme tree with a given topology and a boundary has degenerate edges, then the classic Maxwell formula cannot be applied directly, to calculate the length of the extreme tree in this case it is necessary to know which edges are degenerate. In this paper we generalize the Maxwell formula to arbitrary extreme trees in a Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. Now to calculate the length of such a tree, there is no need to know either what edges are degenerate, or the directions of nondegenerate boundary edges. The answer is the maximum of some special linear function on the corresponding compact convex subset of the Euclidean space coinciding with the intersection of some cylinders.
