Incommensurate Spin Density Wave versus local magnetic inhomogeneities in Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2: a 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy study

We report 57Fe Mossbauer spectral results in pure and doped Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 with x=0.01 and 0.03. We show that all these materials present a first-order magnetic transition towards a magnetically ordered state. In the doped compounds, a broad distribution of Fe hyperfine fields is present in the magnetic phase. We successfully fit the Mossbauer data in Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 in the framework of two different models: 1) an incommensurate spin density wave; 2) a dopant-induced perturbation of the Fe polarization, recently proposed to interpret 75As NMR data in Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2, which is valid only in the very dilute limit x=0.01. Moreover, we show here that these NMR data can also be successfully analysed in terms of the 'incommensurate model' for all doping contents by using the parameters obtained from the Mossbauer spectral analysis. Therefore it is not possible to rule out the presence of an incommensurate spin density wave on the basis of the 75As NMR data.

Different effects of Ni and Co substitution on the transport properties of BaFe2As2

We report resistivity and Hall effect results on Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 and compare them with those in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. The Hall number RH is negative for all x values from 0.01 to 0.14, which indicates that electron carriers dominate the transport both in the magnetic and paramagnetic regime. We analyse the data in the framework of a two-band model. Without any assumption on the number of carriers, we show that the electron resistivity can be estimated with good accuracy in the low temperature paramagnetic range. Although the phase diagrams of the two families are very similar with respect to the extra electrons added in the system, we find that the transport properties differ in several aspects. First, we evidence that the contribution of holes to the transport is more important for Ni doping than for Co doping. Secondly, Ni behaves as a stronger scatterer for the electrons, as the increase of the residual electron resistivity rho/x is about four times larger for Ni than for Co in the most doped samples.

Spin dynamics in Heisenberg triangular antiferromagnets: A muSR study of LiCrO2

We report a muSR study of LiCrO2, which has a magnetic lattice made up of a stacking of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (Cr3+, S = 3/2) layers. A static magnetically ordered state is observed below the transition temperature T_N = 62 K, while the expected peak of the relaxation rate is slightly shifted downward by a few kelvins below T_N. We draw a comparison with the isostructural compound NaCrO2, where an exotic broad fluctuating regime has been observed [A. Olariu, P. Mendels, F. Bert, B. G. Ueland, P. Schiffer, R. F. Berger, and R. J. Cava, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 167203 (2006)] and was suggested to originate from topological excitations of the triangular lattice. Replacing Na by Li strongly narrows the exotic fluctuating regime formerly observed in NaCrO2, which we attribute to a more pronounced inter-plane coupling in LiCrO2.

Matrix formalism and singular-value decomposition for the location of gamma interactions in segmented HPGe detectors

Modern coaxial and planar HPGe detectors allow a precise determination of the energies and trajectories of the impinging gamma-rays. This entails the location of the gamma interactions inside the crystal from the shape of the delivered signals. This paper reviews the state of the art of the analysis of the HPGe response function and proposes methods that lead to optimum signal decomposition. The generic matrix method allows fast location of the interactions even when the induced signals strongly overlap.

Fast analytical methods for the correction of signal random time-shifts and application to segmented HPGe detectors

Detection systems rely more and more on on-line or off-line comparison of detected signals with basis signals in order to determine the characteristics of the impinging particles. Unfortunately, these comparisons are very sensitive to the random time shifts that may alter the signal delivered by the detectors. We present two fast algebraic methods to determine the value of the time shift and to enhance the reliability of the comparison to the basis signals.

17O NMR study of the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility and spin dynamics of the quantum kagome antiferromagnet ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2

We report through 17O NMR, an unambiguous local determination of the intrinsic kagome lattice spin susceptibility as well as that created around non-magnetic defects issued from natural Zn/ Cu exchange in the S=1/2 (Cu2+) herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 compound. The issue of a singlet-triplet gap is addressed. The magnetic response around a defect is found to markedly differ from that observed in non-frustrated antiferromagnetic materials. Finally, we discuss our relaxation measurements in the light of Cu and Cl NMR data [cond-mat 070314] and suggest a flat q-dependence of the excitations.

Quantum magnetism in the paratacamite family: towards an ideal kagome lattice

We report MuSR measurements on the S=1/2 (Cu2+) paratacamite Zn_xCu_{4-x}(OH)_6Cl_2 family. Despite a Weiss temperature of -300 K, the x=1 compound is found to have no transition to a magnetic frozen state down to 50 mK as theoretically expected for the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We find that the limit between a dynamical and a frozen inhomogeneous ground state occurs around x=0.5. For x=1, we discuss the relevance to a singlet picture.

Unconventional Dynamics in Triangular Heisenberg Antiferromagnet NaCrO2

We report magnetization, specific heat, muon spin rotation and Na NMR measurements on the S=3/2 rhombohedrally stacked Heisenberg antiferromagnet NaCrO2. This compound appears to be an ideal candidate for the study of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets with very weak interlayer coupling. While specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate the occurrence of a transition in the range 40-46 K, both muon spin rotation and NMR reveal a fluctuating regime extending well below T_c, with a peak of relaxation rate 1/T1 around 30 K. This novel finding is discussed within the context of excitations in the triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

Direct evidence for a dynamical ground state in the highly frustrated Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore

MuSR experiments have been performed on powder sample of the "ordered spin ice" Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore compound. At base temperature (T=35mK) the muon relaxation is found to be of dynamical nature which demonstrates that strong fluctuations persist below the ferromagnetic transition (T_C=0.87K). Hints of long range order appear as oscillations of the muon polarization when an external field is applied and also as a hysteretic behavior below T_C. We propose a dynamical and strongly correlated scenario where dynamics results from fluctuation of large spin clusters with the "ordered spin ice" structure.
