Apparent horizon thermodynamics in an exponential $f(Q)$ gravity model

We investigate the thermodynamics of the apparent horizon in an exponential $f(Q)$ gravity model characterized by the two parameters $b$ and $n$, within a spatially flat Friedmann--Lema\^itre--Robertson--Walker background and the coincident gauge. Focusing on the $n=1$ solution, we use the approximate cosmological solution for the Hubble parameter up to second order in the exponential parameter $b$ to study the redshift evolution of the apparent-horizon radius and the Kodama--Hayward temperature. We formulate Hayward's unified first law in terms of the Misner--Sharp--Hernandez mass, the work density, and the energy-supply vector, and show that the horizon dynamics admits an equilibrium thermodynamic description. The associated entropy differential is proportional to $f_Q+2Qf_{QQ}$, yielding exponentially suppressed corrections to the Bekenstein--Hawking area law and recovering $S=A/4$ in the limit $b\to0$. We then examine the generalized second law (GSL) by including the entropy of matter inside the apparent horizon. When the matter and horizon temperatures are identified, we adopt the GSL viability criterion $f_Q+2Qf_{QQ}\geq0$ previously derived in the literature. The observationally motivated best-fit values of $b$ satisfy this condition over the redshift interval studied and produce departures from $\Lambda$CDM mainly at late times. In contrast, sufficiently large positive values, approximately $b>0.26$, can violate the GSL in the future region $z<0$. These results show that apparent-horizon thermodynamics provides a complementary constraint on the parameter space of exponential $f(Q)$ cosmology.

Phase space analysis of an exponential model in $f(Q)$ gravity including linear dark-sector interactions

We present a cosmological analysis of an exponential $f(Q)$ gravity model, within the dynamical systems formalism. Following the method introduced by B\"ohmer \textit{et al} [Universe \textbf{9} no.4, 166 (2023)], the modified Friedmann modified equations are successfully reduced to an autonomous system. Given the exponential form of $f(Q)$, the equilibrium conditions result in transcendental equations, which we approximate to identify the critical points. We therefore perform a general stability analysis of these points in terms of the model parameters. Finally, we extend the model by including a linear dark energy-dark matter interaction, where the equilibrium points are found with their stability properties. The model exhibits the three main domination epochs in the Universe, as well as a non-trivial impact on the late-time de Sitter attractor.

Analysis of the cosmological evolution parameters, energy conditions, and linear matter perturbations of an exponential-type model in $f(Q)$ gravity

We study cosmological evolution in a flat FLRW spacetime in the context of modified STEGR gravity or $f(Q)$, using an exponential two-parameter model which represents a smooth perturbative expansion around the $\Lambda$CDM model. The cosmological analysis is carried out by calculating the Hubble parameter as a function of redshift, for selected values of the parameters. The Hubble parameter is obtained analytically by means of several approximations good enough to deviate slightly from the $\Lambda$CDM case. Several late-time cosmological parameters are computed, such as: dark energy state parameter, deceleration parameter, statefinder parameters. Additionally, we analyzed the behavior of the classical energy conditions WEC, SEC, NEC, and DEC for both the combination of matter and geometrical contribution and the geometrical contribution alone. Beyond the background level, linear matter perturbations are studied by calculating parameters relevant to structure growth and formation. The overall results indicate that the model may exhibit quintessence-like and phantom-like behavior and it impacts the growth of structures in the universe by means late-time deviations from the $\Lambda$CDM model.

Observational constraints on a modified-gravity model with an exponential function of the curvature using the expansion history, the RSD, and the Pantheon+SH0ES data

Considering a well-motivated $f(R)$ modified-gravity model, in which an exponential function of the curvature is included, in this paper we implement a statistical data analysis to set constraints on the parameters of the model, taking into account an analytic approximate solution for the expansion rate, $H(z)$. Using a Monte Carlo Markov Chain-based analysis of the expansion rate evolution, the standardized SN distance modulus and the redshift space distortion observational data, we find that the preferred value for the perturbative parameter, $b$, quantifying the deviation of the $f(R)$ model from $\Lambda$CDM, lies in a region that excludes $b = 0$ at $\gtrsim 3.5 \sigma$ C.L., and that the predicted current value of the Hubble parameter, $H_0$, locates in between the two observational results currently under scrutiny from Planck and SH0ES collaborations. Under the implemented approximate solution, and with the constraints obtained for the parameters, the proposed $f(R)$ model successfully reproduces the observational data and the predicted evolution of interesting cosmological parameters resemble the results of $\Lambda$CDM, as expected, while an oscillatory behavior of the dark energy equation of state is observed, pointing to deviation from the concordance cosmological model. The results presented here reinforce the conclusion that the $f(R)$ modified-gravity model represents a viable alternative to describe the evolution of the Universe, avoiding the challenges faced by $\Lambda$CDM.

Cosmological dynamics and observational constraints on a viable $f(Q)$ non-metric gravity model

Inspired by an exponential $f(R)$ gravity model studied in the literature, in this work we introduce a new and viable $f(Q)$ gravity model, which can be represented as a perturbation of $Λ$CDM. Typically, within the realm of $f(Q)$ gravity, the customary approach to investigate cosmological evolution involves employing a parametrization of the Hubble expansion rate in terms of the redshift, $H(z)$, among other strategies. In this work we have implemented a different strategy, deriving an analytical approximation for $H(z)$, from which we deduce approximated analytical expressions for the parameters $w_{\rm{DE}}$, $w_{\rm{eff}}$, and $Ω_{\rm{DE}}$, as well as the deceleration parameter $q$. In order to verify the viability of this approximate analytical solution, we examined the behavior of the these parameters in the late-time regime\textbf, in terms of the free parameter of the model, $b$. We find that for $b>0$, $w_{\rm{DE}}$ shows a quintessence-like behavior, while for $b<0$, it shows a phantom-like behavior. However, regardless of the sign of $b$, $w_{\rm{eff}}$ exhibits a quintessence-like behavior. Furthermore, it has been deduced that as the magnitude of the parameter $b$ increases, the present model deviates progressively from $Λ$CDM. We have also performed a Markov Chain Monte Carlo statistical analysis to test the model predictions with the Hubble parameter, the Pantheon supernova (SN) observational data, and the combination of those samples, obtaining constraints on the parameters of the model and the current values of the Hubble parameter and the matter density. Our findings indicate that this $f(Q)$ gravity model is indeed a viable candidate for describing the late-time evolution of the Universe at the background level.

A viable $f(R)$ gravity model without oscillations in the effective dark energy

In this study, we propose a reparameterization of a specific viable $f(R)$ gravity model to represent it as a perturbation of the $Λ$CDM model. The $f(R)$ gravity model under consideration includes two parameters, $b$ and $n$, which control how close the proposed model can be to $Λ$CDM, allowing for arbitrary proximity. Furthermore, it is shown that the Hu-Sawicki (HS) model is a limiting case of this reparameterized model. Following the existing literature, we also derive an analytical approximation for the expansion rate $H(z)$, which shows an excellent agreement between this analytical approximation and the numerical solution over a wide range of redshifts for realistic values of the deviation parameter $b$. By appropriately selecting values for the model parameters, we plot the cosmological parameters $w_{\rm{DE}}$, $w_{\rm{eff}}$, $Ω_{\rm{DE}}$, and $H(z)$, as well as the statefinder quantities $q$, $j$, $s$, and $Om(z)$. We find that their present values (at $z=0$) are consistent with the observations from Planck 2018 and the values predicted by the $Λ$CDM model. It is important to note that the examined cosmological and statefinder parameters do not exhibit significant oscillations of effective dark energy, which could lead to singular and unphysical solutions at high redshifts. This anomalous behavior has been avoided here by utilizing the approximate analytical solution for $H(z)$. Additionally, we conduct a detailed analysis of the evolution of matter density perturbations within the introduced $f(R)$ gravity model. The results demonstrate that this viable $f(R)$ gravity model is practically indistinguishable from the $Λ$CDM model at the background level.

Late-time cosmology in a model of modified gravity with an exponential function of the curvature

In this work, we analyse the late-time evolution of the universe for a particular $f(R)$ gravity model built from an exponential function of the scalar curvature. Following the literature, we write the field equations in terms of a suited statefinder function ($y_H(z)$) and considering well motivated physical initial conditions, the resulting equations are solved numerically. Also, the cosmological parameters $w_{\rm{DE}}$, $w_{\rm{eff}}$, $Ω_{\rm{DE}}$ and $H(z)$ and the statefinder quantities $q$, $j$, $s$ and $Om(z)$ are explicitly expressed in terms of $y_H(z)$ and its derivatives. Furthermore, setting an appropriate set of values for the model parameters, the cosmological parameters as well as the statefinder quantities are plotted, and their present values (at $z=0$), are shown to be compatible with Planck 2018 observations and the $Λ$CDM-model values. Considering updated measurements from the dynamics of the expansion of the universe, $H(z)$, we perform an statistical analysis to constrain the free parameters of the model, finding a particular set of values that fit the data well and predict acceptable values for the cosmological and statefinder parameters at present time. Therefore, the $f(R)$ gravity model is found to be consistent with the considered observational data, and a viable alternative to explain the late-time acceleration of the universe.

Barrow holographic dark energy with Granda-Oliveros cut-off

A study on the effects of implementing the Granda-Oliveros infrared cutoff in the recently introduced Barrow Holographic Dark Energy model is presented, and its cosmological evolution is investigated. We find how the deformation parameter, $Δ$, affects the values of $H(z)$, and find that from this model it is possible to obtain an accelerated expansion regime of the universe at late times. We also obtain that increasing $Δ$ causes the EoS parameter to transition from quintessence to phantom. In addition, we show that the model can be used to describe the know eras of dominance. Finally, after studying the stability of the proposed model, a fit of the corresponding parameters is preformed, utilizing the measurements of the expansion rate of the universe, $H(z)$. The best fit of the parameters is found to be $(α,\, β,\, Δ) = (1.00^{+0.02}_{-0.02},\,0.69^{+0.03}_{-0.02},\,0.000^{+0.004}_{-0.000})$ at $1σ$ C.L, for which the Bekenstein-Hawking relation is favored.

Inflation in a scalar-vector-tensor theory

In this work, we study inflation in a particular scalar-vector-tensor theory of gravitation without the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. The model is constructed from the more general action introduced in Heisenberg et al. (Phys Rev D 98:024038, 2018) using certain specific choices for the Lagrangians and the coupling functions. Also, for this model we build the explicit form for the action, and from it, we derive the general equations: the energy-momentum tensor and the equations of motion, and using the flat FLRW background, we have analyzed if it's possible to obtain an inflationary regime with it. Additionally, using particular choices for the potential, the coupling functions, suitable dimensionless coupling constants and initial conditions, it was possible verify numerically that this model of inflation is viable. In this sense, we could verify that the introduction of the coupling function $f(ϕ)$ in our model of inflation, allows us to reach a suitable amount of $e$-foldings $N$ for sufficient inflation. This is a remarkable result, since without the coupling function contribution, the amount of $e$-foldings is smaller at the end of inflation, as has been demonstrated in Heisenberg et al. (2018). Also, the no-ghosts and stability conditions that the model during inflation must satisfy, i.e., absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities of linear cosmological perturbations were obtained, furthermore these conditions were verified numerically too.

Inflation driven by a holographic energy density

In this letter we study a model of inflation in which the inflationary regimen comes from a type of holographic energy density. In particular, we consider the Granda-Oliveros proposal for the holographic energy density, which contains two free dimensionless parameters, $α$ and $β$. This holographic energy density is associated to the so-called Granda-Oliveros infrared cutoff (G-O cutoff). Additionally, since in the inflationary regimen the energy scales are very high, it is necessary to modify the G-O cutoff taking into account a correction due to the ultraviolet cutoff. In this way, we obtain an algebraic equation which implicitly includes the Hubble parameter (as a function of e-folding number, $N$) and from this, we calculate the Hubble slow-roll parameters and the values of the inflationary observables: the scalar spectral index of the curvature perturbations and its running, the tensor spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio. Finally, since the values for these inflationary observables are known (Planck 2018 observations), we present constraints on the parameters $α$ and $β$ to make this a viable model.

Constant-roll inflation driven by a scalar field with non-minimal derivative coupling

In this work, we study constant-roll inflation driven by a scalar field with non-minimal derivative coupling to gravity, via the Einstein tensor. This model contains a free parameter, $η$, which quantifies the non-minimal derivative coupling and a parameter $α$ which characterize the constant-roll condition. In this scenario, using the Hamilton-Jacobi-like formalism, an ansatz for the Hubble parameter (as a function of the scalar field) and some restrictions on the model parameters, we found new exact solutions for the inflaton potential which include power-law, de Sitter, quadratic hilltop and natural inflation, among others. Additionally, a phase space analysis was performed and it is shown that the exact solutions associated to natural inflation and a "$\cosh$-type" potential, are attractors.

Inflation driven by massive vector fields with derivative self-interactions

Inspired by the Generalized Proca Theory, we study a vector-tensor model of inflation with massive vector fields and derivative self-interactions. The action under consideration contains a usual Maxwell-like kinetic term, a general potential term and a term with non-minimal derivative coupling between the vector field and gravity, via the dual Riemann tensor. In this theory, the last term contains a free parameter, $λ$, which quantifies the non-minimal derivative coupling. In this scenario, taking into account a spatially flat FRW universe and a general vector field, we obtain the general expressions for the equation of motion and the total energy momentum tensor. Choosing a Proca-type potential, a suitable inflationary regimen driven by massive vector fields is studied. In this model, the isotropy of expansion is guaranteed by considering a triplet of orthogonal vector fields. In order to obtain an inflationary solution with this model, the quasi de Sitter expansion was considered. In this case the vector field behaves as a constant. Finally, slow roll analysis is performed and slow-roll conditions are defined for this model, which, for suitable constraints of the model parameters, can give the required number of e-folds for sufficient inflation.

Slow-roll inflation from massive vector fields non-minimally coupled to gravity

In this work we study slow-roll inflation for a vector-tensor model with massive vector fields non-minimally coupled to gravity. The model under consideration has arbitrary parameters for each geometrical coupling. Taking into account a spatially flat FRW type universe and a general vector fields (with temporal and spatial components), we get the general expressions for equation of motion and the total energy momentum tensor. In this scenario, the isotropy of expansion is guaranteed considering a triplet of orthogonal vector fields, but the effective mass of the vector field is of the order of the Hubble scale and the inflationary regime is difficult to realize with this model. However, for suitable values (or constraints) of model parameters, it is possible to overcome this issue. In this sense, two cases were analyzed. In the first case, a regime with slow-roll inflation was obtained, and for the second case the vector field behaves as a constant, and it drives a quasi de Sitter expansion, hence that slow-roll takes place and inflation occurs.

Late cosmic acceleration in a vector--Gauss-Bonnet gravity model

In this work we study a general vector-tensor model of dark energy with a Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to a vector field and without explicit potential terms. Considering a spatially flat FRW type universe and a vector field without spatial components, the cosmological evolution is analysed from the field equations of this model, considering two sets of parameters. In this context, we have shown that it is possible to obtain an accelerated expansion phase of the universe, since the equation state parameter $w$ satisfies the restriction $-1<w<-1/3$ (for suitable values of model parameters). Further, analytical expressions for the Hubble parameter $H$, equation state parameter $w$ and the invariant scalar $ϕ$ are obtained. We also find that the square of the speed of sound is negative for all values of redshift, therefore, the model presented here shows a sign of instability under small perturbations. We finally perform an analysis using $H(z)$ observational data and we find that for the free parameter $ξ$ in the interval $(-23.9, -3.46)\times 10^{-5}$, at $99.73\%$ C.L. (and fixing $η= -1$ and $ω= 1/4$), the model has a good fit to the data.

New holographic dark energy model with non-linear interaction

In this paper the cosmological evolution of a holographic dark energy model with a non-linear interaction between the dark energy and dark matter components in a FRW type flat universe is analysed. In this context, the deceleration parameter $q$ and the equation state $w_Λ$ are obtained. We found that, as the square of the speed of sound remains positive, the model is stable under perturbations since early times; it also shows that the evolution of the matter and dark energy densities are of the same order for a long period of time, avoiding the so--called coincidence problem. We have also made the correspondence of the model with the dark energy densities and pressures for the quintessence and tachyon fields. From this correspondence we have reconstructed the potential of scalar fields and their dynamics.

Holographic reconstruction of the k-essence and dilaton models

We propose an holographic $k$-essence and dilaton models of dark energy. The correspondence between the $k$-essence and dilaton energy densities with the holographic density, allows the reconstruction of the potential and the fields for the $k$-essence and dilaton models in flat FRW background. For the proposed infrared cut-off the reconstruction was made for the two cases of the constant $α$: for $α<1$ the model presents phantom crossing and the reconstruction was made in the region before the $ω=-1$ crossing for the EoS parameter. The cosmological dynamics for $α>1$ was also reconstructed. The reconstruction is consistent with the observational data.

Current observational constraints on holographic dark energy model

We consider the cosmological constraints on the holographic dark energy model by using the data set available from the type Ia supernovae (SNIa), CMB and BAO observations. The constrained parameters are critical to determine the quintessence or quintom character the model. The SNIa and joint SNIa+CMB+BAO analysis give the best-fit results for $β$ with priors on $Ω_{m0}$ and $ω_0$. Using montecarlo we obtained the best-fit values for $β$, $Ω_{m0}$ and $ω_0$. The statefinder and $Om$ diagnosis have been used to characterize the model over other DE models.

Age problem in holographic dark energy

We study the age problem of the universe with the holographic DE model introduced in [21], and test the model with some known old high redshift objects (OHRO). The parameters of the model have been constrained using the SNIa, CMB and BAO data set. We found that the age of the old quasar APM 08 279+5255 at z = 3.91 can be described by the model.
