HEP-Frame: an Efficient Tool for Big Data Applications at the LHC

HEP-Frame is a new C++ package designed to efficiently perform analyses of data sets from a very large number of events, like those available at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva. It mainly targets high performance servers and mini-clusters, and it was designed for natural science experts with a user-friendly interface to access structured databases. HEP-Frame automatically evaluates the underlying computing resources and builds an adequate code skeleton when creating a data analysis application. In run-time, HEP-Frame analyses a sequence of data sets exploring the available parallelism in the code and hardware resources: it concurrently reads inputs from an user-defined data structure and processes them, following the user specific sequence of requirements to select relevant data; it manages the efficient execution of that sequence; and it outputs results in user-defined objects (e.g., ROOT structures), stored together with the input data used. This paper shows how a domain expert software development can benefit from HEP-Frame, and how it significantly improved the performance of analyses of large data sets produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Two case studies are discussed: the associated production of top quarks together with a Higgs boson (ttH) at the LHC, and a double and single top quark productions at the High-Luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-HLC). Results show that the HEP-Frame awareness of the analysis code behavior and structure, and the underlying hardware system, provides powerful and transparent parallelization mechanisms that largely improve the execution time of data analysis applications.

A template method to measure the $t \bar t$ polarisation

We develop a template method for the measurement of the polarisation of $t \bar t$ pairs produced in hadron collisions. The method would allow to extract the individual fractions of $t_L \bar t_L$, $t_R \bar t_R$, $t_L \bar t_R$ and $t_R \bar t_L$ pairs with a fit to data, where $L,R$ refer to the polarisation along any axis. These polarisation fractions have not been independently measured at present. Secondarily, the method also provides the net polarisation of $t$ and $\bar t$, as well as their spin correlation for arbitrary axes.

Study of $t\bar{t}H$ production with $H\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ at the HL-LHC

A feasibility study for an experimental analysis searching for $t\bar{t}H(H\rightarrow b\bar{b})$ production at the LHC and its high luminosity phase is presented in this note. Unlike search strategies currently being used in experimental collaborations, the present analysis exploits jet substructure techniques and focuses on the reconstruction of boosted Higgs bosons, to obtain sensitivity to the signal in a simple cut-based analysis. The $t\bar{t} +$ jets background may be constrained in the proposed analysis through a control region with very small signal contamination. Using this analysis strategy, the $t\bar{t}H(H\rightarrow b\bar{b})$ process could be observed at the LHC, in the semi-leptonic channel alone, with a significance of $5.41\pm 0.12$ for $\mathcal{L}=300\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. For the same integrated luminosity, in the High Luminosity LHC scenario with an upgraded detector, a significance of $6.13\pm 0.11$ may be obtained. The top Yukawa coupling could be measured with a 35\% uncertainty using $\mathcal{L}=300\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ of LHC data and of 17\% at the HL-LHC scenario with $\mathcal{L}=3000\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. In the same luminosity scenarios, the signal strength is equally expected to have a 18$\%$ and 5$\%$ uncertainty, respectively. Finally, it was found that re-clustered jets may be used without loss of efficiency.

CP tests of Higgs couplings in $t\bar{t}h$ semileptonic events at the LHC

The CP nature of the Higgs coupling to top quarks is addressed in this paper, in single charged lepton final states of $t\bar{t}h$ events produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Pure scalar ($h=H$) and pseudo-scalar ($h=A$) Higgs boson signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed using a kinematic fit. Angular distributions of the decay products, as well as CP-sensitive asymmetries, are exploited to separate and gain sensitivity to possible pseudo-scalar components of the Higgs boson and reduce the contribution from the dominant irreducible background $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$. Significant differences are found between the pure CP-even and -odd signal hypotheses as well as with respect to the Standard Model background, in particular the $t\bar{t} b\bar{b}$ contribution. Such differences survive the event reconstruction, allowing to define optimal observables to extract the Higgs couplings parameters from a global fit. A dedicated analysis is applied to efficiently identify signal events and reject as much as possible the expected Standard Model background. The results obtained are compared with a similar analysis in the dilepton channel. We show that the single lepton channel is more promising overall and can be used in combination to study the CP nature of the Higgs coupling to top quarks.

Probing the CP nature of the Higgs coupling in $t\bar{t}h$ events at the LHC

The determination of the CP nature of the top quark Yukawa coupling is addressed in this phenomenological work, using $t\bar{t}h$ events at the $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV LHC, with $h\rightarrow b\bar b$ and through the dilepton decay channel of $t\bar{t}$. Signal events were generated for pure $CP$-even, pure $CP$-odd and mixed-$CP$ coupling scenarios. Standard Model (SM) backgrounds were also considered. Angular distributions and asymmetries were studied and found to be potentially good probes to the $CP$ nature of the coupling, even after detector simulation and full event reconstruction using a kinematic fit. Expected limits to the $t\bar th$ production cross-section times branching ratio were obtained for a range of top quark Yukawa $CP$-mixing angles and for different integrated luminosities of the LHC.

Probing the CP nature of the Higgs coupling in $t{\bar t}h$ events at the LHC

The determination of the CP nature of the Higgs coupling to top quarks is addressed in this paper, using $t{\bar t} h$ events produced in $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Dileptonic final states are employed, with two oppositely charged leptons and four jets, corresponding to the decays $t\rightarrow bW^+ \rightarrow b \ell^+ν_\ell$, $\bar{t}\rightarrow \bar{b}W^- \rightarrow \bar{b} \ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$. Pure scalar ($h=H$), pure pseudo-scalar ($h=A$) and CP-violating Higgs boson signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed through a kinematic fit. We furthermore generate samples that have both a CP-even and a CP-odd component in the $t \bar t h$ coupling in order to probe the ratio of the two components. New angular distributions of the decay products, as well as CP angular asymmetries, are explored in order to separate the scalar from the pseudo-scalar components of the Higgs boson and reduce the contribution from the dominant irreducible background, $t{\bar t}b{\bar b}$. Significant differences between the angular distributions and asymmetries are observed, even after the full kinematic fit reconstruction of the events, allowing to define the best observables for a global fit of the Higgs couplings parameters.

New limits on anomalous contributions to the $Wtb$ vertex

The latest and most precise top quark measurements at the LHC and Tevatron are used to establish new limits on the $Wtb$ vertex. Recent results on the measurements of the $W$-boson helicity fractions and single top quark production cross section are combined in order to establish new limits at 95% CL (confidence level). The allowed regions for these limits are presented, for the first time, in three-dimensional graphics, for both real and imaginary components of the different anomalous couplings, providing a new perspective on the impact of the combination of different physics observables. These results are also combined with the prospected future measurement of the single top quark production cross section and $W$-boson helicity fractions at the LHC.

Angular distributions in $t{\bar t}H (H\rightarrow b\bar{b})$ reconstructed events at the LHC

The associated production of a Higgs boson and a top-quark pair, $t{\bar t} H$, in proton-proton collisions is addressed in this paper for a center of mass energy of 13TeV at the LHC. Dileptonic final states of $t{\bar t}H$ events with two oppositely charged leptons and four jets from the decays $t\rightarrow bW^+ \rightarrow b \ell^+ν_\ell$, $\bar{t}\rightarrow \bar{b}W^- \rightarrow \bar{b} \ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$, are used. Signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed by applying a kinematic fit. New angular distributions of the decay products as well as angular asymmetries are explored in order to improve discrimination of $t{\bar t} H$ signal events over the dominant irreducible background contribution, $t{\bar t}b{\bar b}$. Even after the full kinematic fit reconstruction of the events, the proposed angular distributions and asymmetries are still quite different in the $t\bar{t}H$ signal and the dominant background ($t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$).

Studying the $Wtb$ vertex structure using recent LHC results

The $Wtb$ vertex structure and the search for new anomalous couplings is studied using top quark measurements obtained at the LHC, for a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. By combining the latest and most precise results on the single top quark production cross section and the measurements of the $W$-boson helicity fractions ($F_0$ and $F_L$), it is possible to set new limits, at 95% CL (confidence level), on the real and imaginary components of the new couplings. The combination of the LHC observables clearly improves the limits obtained when using the individual results alone. The updated measurements of the $W$-boson helicity fractions and the $s+t$-channels electroweak single top quark production, at the Tevatron, improve the LHC limits, when a world combination of all observables (LHC+Tevatron) is performed.

Searches for new physics in top decays at the LHC

The search for new physics in top quark decays at the LHC is reviewed in this paper. Results from ATLAS and CMS experiments on top quark decays within the Standard Model are presented together with the measurements of the W boson polarizations and the study of the structure of the Wtb vertex. As a natural step forward, the experimental status on measurements sensitive to top quark couplings to gauge bosons (γ, Z, W and H) is reviewed as well as possible top quark decays Beyond the Standard Model (MSSM and FCNC).

Top effective operators at the ILC

We investigate the effect of top trilinear operators in t tbar production at the ILC. We find that the sensitivity to these operators largely surpasses the one achievable by the LHC either in neutral or charged current processes, allowing to probe new physics scales up to 4.5 TeV for a centre of mass energy of 500 GeV. We show how the use of beam polarisation and an eventual energy upgrade to 1 TeV allow to disentangle all effective operator contributions to the Ztt and gamma tt vertices.

Constraints on the Wtb vertex from early LHC data

We use the recent measurements of top quark decay asymmetries in ATLAS and the t-channel single top cross section in CMS to set the first combined LHC limits on the Wtb vertex. This combination allows to obtain much better limits than the separate measurements. The resulting constraints are comparable, although still weaker, than the ones obtained using Tevatron data with much more statistics.

Using single top rapidity to measure V_td, V_ts, V_tb at hadron colliders

Single top production processes are usually regarded as the ones in which V_tb can be directly measured at hadron colliders. We show that the analysis of the single top rapidity distribution in t-channel and tW production can also set direct limits on V_td. At LHC with 10 fb^-1 at 14 TeV the combined limits on V_td may be reduced by almost a factor of two when the top rapidity distribution is used. This also implies that the limits on V_tb can also be reduced by 15%, since both parameters as well as V_ts must be simultaneously obtained from a global fit to data. At Tevatron the explotation of this distribution would require very high statistics.

Dimension six FCNC operators and top production at the LHC

In this work we calculate the effects of the electroweak flavour changing neutral currents dimension six effective operators on single top production at the LHC. These results are then combined with previous ones we have obtained for the strong sector. This allow us, for the first time, to perform a combined analysis of flavour changing neutral currents in top production with all contributing dimension six operators. Finally, we study the feasibility of their observation and characterization both at the Tevatron and at the LHC.

Measurement of air fluorescence light yield induced by an electromagnetic shower

For most of the Ultra-High-Energy-Cosmic-Ray (UHECR) experiments and projects (HiRes, AUGER, TA, JEM-EUSO, TUS,...), the detection technique of Extensive Air Showers is based, at least, on the measurement of the air-fluorescence-induced signal. The knowledge of the Fluorescence-Light Yield (FLY) is of paramount importance for the UHECR energy reconstruction. The MACFLY experiment was designed to perform absolute measurements of the air FLY and to study its properties. Here, we report the result of measurement of dry-air FLY induced by 50 GeV electromagnetic showers as a function of the shower age and as a function of the pressure. The experiment was performed at CERN using a SPS-electron-test-beam line. The result shows the air FLY is proportional to the energy deposited in air (E_d). The ratio FLY/E_d and its pressure dependence remain constant independently of shower age, and more generally, independently of the excitation source used (single-electron track or air shower).

Collider aspects of flavour physics at high Q

This review presents flavour related issues in the production and decays of heavy states at LHC, both from the experimental side and from the theoretical side. We review top quark physics and discuss flavour aspects of several extensions of the Standard Model, such as supersymmetry, little Higgs model or models with extra dimensions. This includes discovery aspects as well as measurement of several properties of these heavy states. We also present public available computational tools related to this topic.

ATLAS sensitivity to Wtb anomalous couplings in top quark decays

We study the sensitivity of the ATLAS experiment to Wtb anomalous couplings in top pair production with semileptonic decay, pp -> t tbar -> W+ b W- bbar, with one of the W bosons decaying leptonically and the other hadronically. Several observables are examined, including the W helicity fractions and new quantities recently introduced, such as the ratios of helicity fractions and some angular asymmetries defined in the W rest frame. The dependence on anomalous couplings of all these observables has been previously obtained. In this work we show that some of the new observables also have smaller systematic uncertainties than the helicity fractions, with a dependence on anomalous couplings similar or stronger than for helicity fractions. Consequently, their measurement can significantly improve the limits on anomalous couplings. Moreover, the most sensitive measurements can be combined. In this case, the precision achieved in the determination of Wtb anomalous couplings can be of a few percent in the semileptonic channel alone.

Study of ATLAS sensitivity to FCNC top decays

The ATLAS experiment sensitivity to top quark Flavour Changing Neutral Current (FCNC) decays was studied at LHC using ttbar events. While one of the top quarks is expected to follow the dominant Standard Model decay t->bW, the other decays through a FCNC channel, i.e. t-> Z u(c), t-> gamma u(c) or t-> g u(c). Different types of analyses, applied to each FCNC decay mode, were compared. The FCNC branching ratio sensitivity (assuming a 5sigma signal significance) and 95% confidence level limits on the branching ratios (in the hypothesis of signal absence) were obtained.
