$^{63/65}$Cu- and $^{35/37}$Cl-NMR Studies of Triplet Localization in the Quantum Spin System NH$_4$CuCl$_3$

$^{63/65}$Cu- and $^{35/37}$Cl-NMR experiments were performed to investigate triplet localization in the $S=1/2$ dimer compound NH$_4$CuCl$_3$, which shows magnetization plateaus at one-quarter and three-quarters of the saturation magnetization. In $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR experiments, signal from only the singlet Cu site was observed, because that from the triplet Cu site was invisible due to the strong spin fluctuation of onsite 3$d$-spins. We found that the temperature dependence of the shift of $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR spectra at the singlet Cu site deviated from that of macroscopic magnetization below T=6 K. This deviation is interpreted as the triplet localization in this system. From the $^{35/37}$Cl-NMR experiments at the 1/4-plateau phase, we found the two different temperature dependences of Cl-shift, namely the temperature dependence of one deviates below T=6 K from that of the macroscopic magnetization as observed in the $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR experiments, whereas the other corresponds well with that of the macroscopic magnetization in the entire experimental temperature region. We interpreted these dependences as reflecting the transferred hyperfine field at the Cl site located at a singlet site and at a triplet site, respectively. This result also indicates that the triplets are localized at low temperatures. $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR experiments performed at high magnetic fields between the one-quarter and three-quarters magnetization plateaus have revealed that the two differently oriented dimers in the unit cell are equally occupied by triplets, the fact of which limits the theoretical model on the periodic structure of the localized triplets.

$^1$H-NMR Spin-Lattice Relaxation Rate of IPACu(Cl$_{x}$Br$_{1-x}$)$_3$ with $x=0$ and 0.35

The spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ of $^1$H-NMR has been measured in (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$Cu(Cl$_x$Br$_{1-x}$)$_3$ with $x=0$ and 0.35, in order to investigate the microscopic magnetism of systems. Previous macroscopic magnetization and specific heat measurements suggested that these two exist in a singlet-dimer phase. The temperature dependence of $T_1^{-1}$ in an $x=0$ system decreased exponentially toward zero, indicating microscopic evidence of the gapped singlet ground state, which is consistent with the macroscopic experiments. At the same time, in the $x=0.35$ system, $T_1^{-1}$ showed a sharp peak structure at around 7.5 K though no splitting of $^1$H-NMR spectra indicative of the magnetic ordering was observed. We discuss the observed sharp peak structure in the $x=0.35$ system with the soft mode toward the exotic magnetic ground state suggested by the recent $μ$SR experiments.

\muSR-dtected Soft mode toward a Possible Phase Transition in disordered spin gap system (CH3)2CHNH3-Cu(ClxBr1-x)3

Measurements of macroscopic properties have indicated that the bond-disordered spin-gap system (CH3)2CHNH3-Cu(ClxBr1-x)3 is gapless when x is between 0.44 and 0.87. Using muon spin relaxation to investigate microscopic properties of sample with x=0.35, we observed a dynamical spin fluctuation, whose characteristic frequency decreases with decreasing temperature, indicating a magnetic ground state.

NMR study on the local structure in La-based high-Tc cuprates

To date, there has been no evidence for the macroscopic structural phase transition to the low temperature tetragonal structure (LTT) with a space group P42/ncm in high-TC cuprate of rare earth-free La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). By investigating Cu-NMR on single crystals, we have found that spatially incoherent LTT structure emerges below 50 K in the sample with x=0.12. This incoherent structure is considered to play a key role for the slight depression of the superconductivity around x=1/8.

$^1$H-NMR Study of the Random Bond Effect in the Quantum Spin System (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$Cu(Cl$_x$Br$_{1-x}$)$_3$

Spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ of $^1$H-NMR has been measured in (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$Cu(Cl$_x$Br$_{1-x}$)$_3$ with $x=0.88$, which has been reported to be gapped system with singlet ground state from the previous macroscopic magnetization and specific heat measurements, in order to investigate the bond randomness effect microscopically in the gapped composite Haldane system (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$. It was found that the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ in the present system includes both fast and slow relaxation parts indicative of the gapless magnetic ground state and the gapped singlet ground state, respectively. We discuss the obtained results with the previous macroscopic magnetization and specific heat measurements together with the microscopic $μ$SR experiments.

NMR Study on the Vortex Slush Phase in Organic Superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2

The vortex state in a single crystal of the layered organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF2Cu(NCS)2, where BEDT-TTF (or ET) is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene, was studied by 1H-NMR. Under a low field region around 0.75 T, the vortex glass-liquid transition was demonstrated by a diverging of the longitudinal nuclear spin relaxation rate and peak-broadening in spectra. Under a high field region near the upper critical field Hc2(0)~7 T, the curvature of nuclear spin relaxation curves showed a drastic change at the temperature where the emergence of the quantum vortex slush state was reported. The mechanism in this curvature change was discussed in terms of the fluctuating field produced by fragments of vortex glass.

Softening of Magnetic Excitations Leading to Pressure-Induced Quantum Phase Transition in Gapped Spin System KCuCl$_3$

KCuCl$_3$ is a three dimensionally coupled spin dimer system, which undergoes a pressure-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped ground state to an antiferromagnetic state at a critical pressure of $P_{\rm c} \simeq 8.2$ kbar. Magnetic excitations in KCuCl$_3$ at a hydrostatic pressure of 4.7 kbar have been investigated by conducting neutron inelastic scattering experiments using a newly designed cylindrical high-pressure clamp cell. A well-defined single excitation mode is observed. The softening of the excitation mode due to the applied pressure is clearly observed. From the analysis of the dispersion relations, it is found that an intradimer interaction decreases under hydrostatic pressure, while most interdimer interactions increase.

Thermodynamic properties of the field-induced Neel order of TlCuCl3

TlCuCl3 shows a quantum phase transition from a spin-gap phase to a Neel-ordered ground state as a function of magnetic field around H_{C0}~4.8T. From measurements of the specific heat c and the linear thermal expansion alpha_i we calculate the Grueneisen parameter Gamma_i(T)=alpha_i/c. Close to H_{C0} we find a diverging Gamma_i(T->0, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. However, the predicted individual temperature dependencies of alpha(T) and c(T) are not reproduced by our experimental data.

Cu-NMR study on the disordered quantum spin magnet with the Bose-glass ground state

Cu-NMR study has been performed on the disordered spin-gap system Tl1-xKxCuCl3 In the high-field H > HC=Δ/μ_B, where Δis the spin-gap, the hyperfine field becomes extremely inhomogeneous at low temperatures due to the field-induced magnetic order, indicating that the ordered spin state must be different from the pure TlCuCl3. In the low field H < HC, a saturating behavior in the longitudinal nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T1 was observed at low temperatures, indicating existence of the magnetic ground state proposed to be Bose-glass phase by Fisher.

Thermodynamics of the coupled spin-dimer system TlCuCl3 close to a quantum phase transition

We present thermal expansion alpha, magnetostriction and specific heat C measurements of \tal, which shows a quantum phase transition from a spin-gap phase to a Neel-ordered ground state as a function of magnetic field around H_{C0}->4.8T. Using Ehrenfest's relation, we find huge pressure dependencies of the spin gap for uniaxial as well as for hydrostatic pressure. For T->0 and H->H_{C0} we observe a diverging Grueneisen parameter Gamma(T)=alpha/C, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. However, the predicted individual temperature dependencies alpha(T) and C(T) are not reproduced by our experimental data.

Muon spin relaxation and rotation study on the solid solution of the two spin-gap systems (CH3)2CHNH3-CuCl3 and (CH3)2CHNH3-CuBr3

Muon-spin-rotation and relaxation studies have been performed on (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$Cu(Cl$_x$Br$_{1-x}$)$_3$ with $x$=0.85 and 0.95, which are solid solutions of the two isomorphic spin-gap systems (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$ and (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuBr$_3$ with different spin gaps. The sample with $x$=0.85 showed a clear muon spin rotation under zero-field below $T_{\rm N}$=11.65K, indicating the existence of a long-range antiferromagnetic order. A critical exponent of the hyperfine field was obtained to be $β$=0.33, which agrees with 3D-Ising model. In the other sample with $x$=0.95, an anomalous enhancement of the muon spin relaxation was observed at very low temperatures indicating a critical slowing down due to a magnetic instability of the ground state.

Polarized Neutron Inelastic Scattering Study of the Anisotropic Magnetic Fluctuations in the Quasi-1D Ising-like Antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$

Polarized neutron inelastic scattering experiments have been carried out in the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$. We observed the longitudinal magnetic fluctuation $S_{zz} (Q, ω)$ for the spin-wave excitation continuum, which has not been observed in the unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering experiments of the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnets CsCoCl$_3$ and TlCoCl$_3$ so far, together with the transverse magnetic fluctuation $S_{xx} (Q, ω)$. We compared both obtained intensities of $S_{xx} (Q, ω)$ and $S_{zz} (Q, ω)$ with the perturbation theory from the pure Ising limit by Ishimura and Shiba, and a semi-quantitative agreement was found.

Magnetic Excitations in the Quasi-1D Ising-like Antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$

Neutron inelastic scattering measurements have been performed in order to investigate the magnetic excitations in the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$. We observed the magnetic excitation, which corresponds to the spin-wave excitation continuum corresponding to the domain-wall pair excitation in the 1D Ising-like antiferromagnet. According to the Ishimura-Shiba theory, we analyzed the observed spin-wave excitation, and the exchange constant $2J$ and the anistropy $ε$ were estimated as 14.7 meV and 0.14 in TlCoCl$_3$, respectively.

Uniaxial pressure dependencies of the phase boundary of TlCuCl_3

We present a thermal expansion and magnetostriction study of TlCuCl_3, which shows a magnetic-field induced transition from a spin gap phase to a Neel ordered phase. Using Ehrenfest relations we derive huge and strongly anisotropic uniaxial pressure dependencies of the respective phase boundary, e.g. the transition field changes by about $\pm 185$ GPa depending on the direction of uniaxial pressure.

Magnetoelastic Coupling in the Spin-Dimer System TlCuCl$_3$

We present high-resolution measurements of the thermal expansion and the magnetostriction of TlCuCl$_{3}$ which shows field-induced antiferromagnetic order. We find pronounced anomalies in the field and temperature dependence of different directions of the lattice signaling a large magnetoelastic coupling. The phase boundary is extremely sensitive to pressure, e.g. the transition field would change by about +/- 185$%/GPa under uniaxial pressure applied along certain directions. This drastic effect can unambiguously be traced back to changes of the intradimer coupling under uniaxial pressure. The interdimer couplings remain essentially unchanged under pressure, but strongly change when Tl is replaced by K.

Field-Induced Magnetic Order and Simultaneous Lattice Deformation in TlCuCl3

We report the results of Cu and Cl nuclear magnetic resonance experiments (NMR) and thermal expansion measurements in magnetic fields in the coupled dimer spin system TlCuCl3. We found that the field-induced antiferromagnetic transition as confirmed by the splitting of NMR lines is slightly discontinuous. The abrupt change of the electric field gradient at the Cl sites, as well as the sizable change of the lattice constants, across the phase boundary indicate that the magnetic order is accompanied by simultaneous lattice deformation.

Dynamics of anisotropic spin dimer system in strong magnetic field

Recently measured high-field ESR spectra of the spin dimer material TlCuCl3 are described within the framework of an effective field theory. A good agreement between the theory and experiment is achieved, for all geometries and in a wide field range, under the assumption of a weak anisotropy of the interdimer as well as intradimer exchange interaction.

Pressure-Induced Successive Magnetic Phase Transitions in the Spin Gap System TlCuCl$_3$

Under the hydrostatic pressure $P=1.48$ GPa, polarized neutron elastic scattering experiments have been carried out on the coupled spin dimer system TlCuCl$_3$ with the gapped ground state at ambient pressure. Pressure-induced magnetic ordering occurs at the transition temperature $T_{\rm N}=16.9$ K. As in the field-induced and impurity-induced magnetic ordered phases, the ordered moments lie in the $a-c$ plane just below $T_{\rm N}$. An additional spin reorientation (SR) phase transition was observed at $T_{\rm SR}=10$ K, where the ordered moments start to incline toward the b-axis. The temperature variations of the direction and the magnitude of the ordered moments were also investigated.
