Final reheating temperature on a single brane

We make a generic remark on thermal history of a single brane cosmology in models with an infinitely large single extra dimension. We point out that the reheat temperature of the Universe is bounded by an excess production of gravitons from the thermal bath. The actual bound is given by the brane tension. If the initial temperature of the Universe is larger than this bound, then an efficient graviton production shall prevail. However, the brane cools down gradually as the Kaluza-Klein gravitons take the energy in excess away from the brane. The cooling continues until the radiation dominated phase is restored, which occurs before the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We argue whatsoever be the early evolution of the Universe, the final radiation dominated phase always starts after the Universe transits from non-conventional era to the standard cosmological era.

A dynamical stabilization of the radion potential

Large extra dimensional theories attempt to solve the hierarchy problem by assuming that the fundamental scale of the theory is at the electroweak scale. This requires the size of the extra dimensions to be stabilized at a scale which is determined by the effective four dimensional Planck mass and the number of extra dimensions. In this paper we concentrate upon the dynamical reasons to stabilize them by providing a running mass to the radion field. We show that it is possible to maintain the size of the extra dimensions once it is stabilized throughout the dynamics of inflation.

Affleck-Dine baryogensis in large extra dimensions

Baryogenesis in the models where the fundamental scale is as low as TeV in the context of large extra dimensions is a challenging problem. The requirement for the departure from thermal equilibrium necessarily ties any low scale baryogenesis with that of a successful inflationary model which automatically provides the out of equilibrium condition after the end of inflation. However, it is also noticeable that in these models the reheat temperature of the Universe is strongly constrained from the overproduction of Kaluza-Klein modes, which enforces a very low reheat temperature. In this paper we describe a possible scenario for baryogenesis which has a similar characteristics of an Affleck-Dine field. We notice that in order to have an adequate baryon to entropy ratio one requires to promote this Affleck-Dine field to reside in the bulk.

Large Lepton Mixings Induced by Sterile Neutrino

We assume that the mass matrix of active neutrinos has hierarchical form with small mixings, similar to quark mass matrix. We show that the large mixings between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ as well as between $ν_e$ and certain combination of $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ required by the present data can appear due to the presence of a sterile neutrino state. Two realizations of this possibility are considered: (i) Large flavor mixing appears as a result of sterile neutrino ``decoupling'' ($m_{ss} \gg m_a$), so that the active-sterile mixings are negligible. (ii) Sterile neutrino has a mass of O(1) eV and its mixing with active neutrinos can be observable. In the second case, the (3+1) scheme of neutrino mass, which also accommodates the LSND result, can be reproduced, provided the hierarchy of the mass matrix of active neutrinos is not strong (the ratio of largest to smallest elements is about two orders of magnitude). The enhancement of lepton mixing via coupling with sterile neutrino can be realized in Grand Unified theories with the see-saw mechanism of neutrino mass generation.

Theories in More than Four Dimensions

Particle physics models where there are large hidden extra dimensions are currently on the focus of an intense activity. The main reason is that these large extra dimensions may come with a TeV scale for quantum gravity (or string theory) which leads to a plethora of new observable phenomena in colliders as well in other areas of particle physics. Those new dimensions could be as large as millimeters implying deviations of the Newton's law of gravity at these scales. Intending to provide a basic introduction to this fast developing area, we present a general overview of theories with large extra dimensions. We center our discussion on models for neutrino masses, high dimensional extensions of the Standard Model and gauge coupling unification. We discuss the recently proposed technic of splitting fermion wave functions on a tick brane which may solve the problem of a fast proton decay and produce fermion mass hierarchies without invoking extra global symmetries. Randall-Sundrum model and some current trends are also commented.

Inflation in Models with Large Extra Dimensions Driven by a Bulk Scalar Field

We discuss inflation in models with large extra dimensions, driven by a bulk scalar field. The brane inflaton is then a single effective field, obtained from the bulk scalar field by scaling. The self interaction terms of the effective brane inflaton are then naturally suppressed. The picture is consistent with a fundamental string scale in the TeV range without the problem of a superlight inflaton. If hybrid inflation is considered, the right prediction for the density perturbations as observed by COBE can be obtained without any fine tunning. The bulk inflaton then decays preferentially into brane Higgses and reheating follows.

Three flavour neutrino oscillations in models with large extra dimensions

The key challenges for models with large extra dimensions, posed by neutrino physics are: first to understand why neutrino masses are small and second, whether one can have a simultaneous explanation of all observed oscillation phenomena. There exist models that answer the first challenge by using singlet bulk neutrinos coupled to the standard model in the brane. Our goal in this paper is to see to what extent the simplest versions of these models can answer the second challenge. Our conclusion is that the minimal framework that has no new physics beyond the above simple picture cannot simultaneously explain solar, atmospheric and LSND data, whereas there are several ways that it can accommodate the first two. This would suggest that confirmation of LSND data would indicate the existence of new physics either in the brane or in extra dimensions or both, if indeed it turns out that there are large extra dimensions.

Cosmology of Brane-Bulk Models in Five Dimensions

We study the cosmology of models with four space and one time dimension where our universe is a 3-brane and report a few results which extend existing work in several directions. Assuming a stable fifth dimension, we obtain a solution for the metric, which does not depend on any arbitrary parameters. We discuss some implications of this result.

Type II Seesaw and a Gauge Model for the Bimaximal Mixing Explanation of Neutrino Puzzles

We present a gauge model for the bimaximal mixing pattern among the neutrinos that explains both the atmospheric and solar neutrino data via large angle vacuum oscillation among the three known neutrinos. The model does not include righthanded neutrinos but additional Higgs triplets which acquire naturally small vev's due to the type II seesaw mechanism. A combination of global $L_e-L_μ-L_τ$ and $S_3$ symmetries constrain the mass matrix for both charged leptons and neutrinos in such a way that the bimaximal pattern emerges naturally at the tree level and needed splittings among neutrinos at the one loop level. This model predicts observable branching ratios for $τ\to μμμ$, which could be used to test it.

Breaking Parity Symmetry Using Extra Dimensions

We present a new way to break parity symmetry in left-right symmetric models using boundary conditions on the fields residing in the fifth dimension. We also discuss the connection between the limits on the size of extra dimensions and the scale of right handed symmetry breaking obtained from the analysis of neutrinoless double beta decay in the case where the righthanded gauge symmetry is in the bulk.

Neutrino Masses and Oscillations in Models with Large Extra Dimensions

We discuss the profile of neutrino masses and mixings in models with large extra dimensions when right handed neutrinos are present in the branes along with the usual standard model particles. In these models, string scale must be bigger than $10^{8}$ GeV to have desired properties for the neutrinos at low energies. The lightest neutrino mass is zero and there is oscillations to sterile neutrinos that are different from other models with the bulk neutrino.

Effect of Extra Dimensions on Gauge Coupling Unification

The effects of extra dimensions on gauge coupling unification is studied. We start with a comparison between power law running of the gauge couplings in models with extra dimensions and logarithmic running that happens in many realistic cases. We then discuss the effect of extra dimensions on various classes of unification models. We identify products of evolution coefficients that dictate the profile of unification in different models. We use them to study under what conditions unification of couplings can occur in both one and two step unification models. We find that Kaluza-Klein modes can help generate interesting intermediate scale models with gauge coupling unification such as the minimal left-right models with the seesaw mechanism with a $M_{W_R}\sim 10^{13}$ GeV intermediate scale, useful in understanding neutrino oscillations. We also obtain several examples where the presence of noncanonical normalization of couplings enables us to obtain unification scales around $10^{11}$ GeV. This fits very well into a class of models proposed recently where the string scale is advocated to be at this value from physical arguments.

Topological Defects in $[SU(6)]^3 \times Z_3$

We study topological defects arising in the Grand Unification Model $SU(6)_L\otimes SU(6)_c \otimes SU(6)_R \times Z_3$. We show that the model does not contain domain walls, while it produces massive magnetic monopoles and it may, depending on the symmetry breaking chain, give rise to the formation of strings. We also discuss their possible relation$ the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays detected.

Symmetry Breaking in $[SU(6)]^3\times Z_3$

We analize the different ways for the spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry, for the $[SU(6)]^3\otimes Z_3$ family unification model. In particular we study the consequences of a previous selection for the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs fields, showing that such set predicts unwanted flavor changing neutral currents at the $m_Z=91 GeVs$ mass scale. A new set of vacuum expectation values which solves this problem is proposed.

One Step Non SUSY Unification

We show that it is possible to achieve one step gauge coupling unification in a general class of non supersymmetric models which at low energies have only the standard particle content and extra Higgs fields doublets. The constraints are the experimental values of $α_{em}$, $α_s$ and $\sin^2θ_W$ at $10^2 GeVs$, and the lower bounds for FCNC and proton decay rates. Specific example are pointed out.

Factorization, ladder operators and isospectral structures

Using the modified factorization method employed by Mielnik for the harmonic oscillator, we show that isospectral structures associated with a second order operator $H$, can always be constructed whenever $H$ could be factored, or exist ladder operators for its eigenfunctions. Three examples are shown, and properties like completeness and integrability are discused for the general case.
