Finite-size effects on the phase diagram of difermion condensates in two-dimensional four-fermion interaction models

We investigate finite-size effects on the phase structure of chiral and difermion condensates at finite temperature and density in the framework of the two-dimensional large-$N$ Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We take into account size-dependent effects by making use of $zeta$-function and compactification methods. The thermodynamic potential and the gap equations for the chiral and difermion condensed phases are then derived in the mean-field approximation. Size-dependent critical lines separating the different phases are obtained considering anti-periodic boundary conditions for the spatial coordinate.

Infrared behavior and fixed-point structure in the compactified Ginzburg--Landau model

We consider the Euclidean $N$-component Ginzburg--Landau model in $D$ dimensions, of which $d$ ($d\leq D$) of them are compactified. As usual, temperature is introduced through the mass term in the Hamiltonian. This model can be interpreted as describing a system in a region of the $D$-dimensional space, limited by $d$ pairs of parallel planes, orthogonal to the coordinates axis $x_1,\,x_2,\,...,\,x_d$. The planes in each pair are separated by distances $L_1,\;L_2,\; ...,\,L_d$. For $D=3$, from a physical point of view, the system can be supposed to describe, in the cases of $d=1$, $d=2$, and $d=3$, respectively, a superconducting material in the form of a film, of an infinitely long wire having a retangular cross-section and of a brick-shaped grain. We investigate in the large-$N$ limit the fixed-point structure of the model, in the absence or presence of an external magnetic field. An infrared-stable fixed point is found, whether of not an external magnetic field is applied, but for different ranges of values of the space dimension $ D$.

Addendum: Behavior of a bipartite system in a cavity

This note is an Addendum to our previous article [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{81}, 053820 (2010)]. We show that under the assumption of a Bose-Einstein distribution for the thermal reservoir, zero-temperature properties of the entangled states considered there are not changed by heating, for temperatures up to the order of room temperatures. In this case, the system is dissipative in free space and presents stability for a small cavity, both for T=0 and for finite temperature.

Phase transition in the 3-D massive Gross-Neveu model

We consider the 3-dimensional massive Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature as an effective theory for strong interactions. Using the Matsubara imaginary time formalism, we derive a closed form for the renormalized $T$-dependent four-point function. This gives a singularity, suggesting a phase transition. Considering the free energy we obtain the $T$-dependent mass, which goes to zero for some temperature. These results lead us to the conclusion that there is a second-order phase transition.

Behavior of a bipartite system in a cavity

We study the time evolution of a superposition of product states of two dressed atoms in a spherical cavity in the situations of an arbitrarily large cavity (free space) and of a small one. In the large-cavity case, the system dissipates, whereas, for the small cavity, the system evolves in an oscillating way and never completely decays. We verify that the von Neumann entropy for such a system does not depend on time, nor on the size of the cavity

Vacuum polarization for compactified $QED_{4+1}$ in a magnetic flux background

We evaluate one-loop effects for $QED_{4+1}$ compactified to ${\bf R}^4 \times S^1$, in a non-trivial vacuum for the gauge field, such that a non-vanishing magnetic flux is encircled along the extra dimension. We obtain the vacuum polarization tensor and evaluate the exact parity breaking term, presenting the results from the point of view of the effective 3+1 dimensional theory.

Thermal Effects on the Stability of Excited Atoms in Cavities

An atom, coupled linearly to an environment, is considered in a harmonic approximation in thermal equilibrium inside a cavity. The environment is modeled by an infinite set of harmonic oscillators. We employ the notion of dressed states to investigate the time evolution of the atom initially in the first excited level. In a very large cavity (free space) for a long elapsed time, the atom decays and the value of its occupation number is the physically expected one at a given temperature. For a small cavity the excited atom never completely decays and the stability rate depends on temperature.

Time evolution of a two-atom dressed entangled state in a cavity

We study the time evolution of superposition of product states of two dressed atoms in a spherical cavity in the extreme situations of an arbitrarily large cavity (free space) and of a small one. In the large-cavity case, the system dissipates, whereas, for the small finite cavity, the system evolves in an oscillating way and never completely decays. We also compute the von Neumann entropy for such a system, a measurement of the degree of entanglement of the two atoms, as the superposed state evolves in time. We find that this entropy does not depend on time, nor on the size of the cavity.

Finite-size effects on the chiral phase diagram of four-fermion models in four dimensions

We study the size dependence of the dynamical symmetry breaking in the four-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We show that the presence of boundaries reduces the chiral breaking region, and this effect is strengthened for a larger number of compactified dimensions. A critical value for the length of the compactified dimensions exists, below which the dynamical symmetry breaking is not possible. Considering finite temperature and chemical potential, the chiral phase structure for the system with compactified dimensions is obtained. A gradual decreasing of the chiral breaking region with increasing of chemical potential is found. Also, at fixed chemical potential, the decreasing of the size of the system changes the order of the chiral phase transition.

Dimensional renormalizability in compactified spaces

We first briefly review some aspects of the techniques of dealing with ultraviolet divergences in Feynman amplitudes in an Euclidian $D$-dimensional space-time. Next we consider compactification of a $d$-dimensional ($d\leq D$) subspace. This includes effects of temperature and of compactification of $d-1$ spatial coordinates. Then we show how dimensional renormalization can be implemented for a field theory defined on this Euclidian space-time with a compactified subspace.

Renormalized coordinate approach to the thermalization process

We consider a particle in the harmonic approximation coupled linearly to an environment. modeled by an infinite set of harmonic oscillators. The system (particle--environment) is considered in a cavity at thermal equilibrium. We employ the recently introduced notion of renormalized coordinates to investigate the time evolution of the particle occupation number. For comparison we first present this study in bare coordinates. For a long ellapsed time, in both approaches, the occupation number of the particle becomes independent of its initial value. The value of ocupation number of the particle is the physically expected one at the given temperature. So we have a Markovian process, describing the particle thermalization with the environment. With renormalized coordinates no renormalization procedure is required, leading directly to a finite result.

Quantum effects in $QED_{3+1}$ with an extra compactified dimension

We evaluate one-loop effects for $QED_{3+1}$ in the presence of an extra compactified dimension, in a non-trivial vacuum for the gauge field, such that a non-vanishing magnetic flux is encircled along the extra dimension. We obtain the vacuum polarization tensor and evaluate the exact parity breaking term.

Thermalization process in bare and dressed coordinate approaches

We consider a particle in the approximation of a harmonic oscillator, coupled linearly to a field modeling an environment. The field is described by an infinite set of harmonic oscillators, and the system (particle--field) is considered in a cavity at thermal equilibrium. We employ the notions of bare and dressed coordinates to study the time evolution of the occupation number. With dressed coordinates no renormalization procedure is required, leading directly to a finite result. In particular, for a large time, the occupation number of the particle becomes independent of its initial value. So we have a Markovian process, describing the particle thermalization with the environment.

A Dual Path Integral Representation for Finite Temperature Quantum Field Theory

We impose the periodicity conditions corresponding to the Matsubara formalism for Thermal Field Theory as constraints in the imaginary time path integral. These constraints are introduced by means of time-independent auxiliary fields which, by integration of the original variables, become dynamical fields in the resulting `dual' representation for the theory. This alternative representation has the appealing property of involving fields which live in one dimension less than the original ones, with a quantum partition function whose integration measure is identical to the one of its classical counterpart, albeit with a different (spatially nonlocal) action.

Time evolution of a superposition of dressed oscillator states in a cavity

Using the formalism of {\it renormalized} coordinates and \textit{dressed} states introduced in previous publications, we perform a nonperturbative study of the time evolution of a superposition of two states, the ground state and the first excited level of a harmonic oscillator, the system being confined in a perfectly reflecting cavity of radius $R$. For $R\to\infty$, we find dissipation with dominance of the interference terms of the density matrix, in both weak- and strong-coupling regimes. For small values of $R$ all elements of the density matrix present an oscillatory behavior as times goes on and the system is not dissipative. In both cases, we obtain improved theoretical results with respect to those coming from perturbation theory.

Critical temperature for first-order phase transitions in confined systems

We consider the Euclidean $D$-dimensional $-λ|ϕ|^4+η|ϕ|^6$ ($λ,η>0 $) model with $d$ ($d\leq D$) compactified dimensions. Introducing temperature by means of the Ginzburg--Landau prescription in the mass term of the Hamiltonian, this model can be interpreted as describing a first-order phase transition for a system in a region of the $D$-dimensional space, limited by $d$ pairs of parallel planes, orthogonal to the coordinates axis $x_1, x_2, ..., x_d$. The planes in each pair are separated by distances $L_1, L_2, ..., L_d$. We obtain an expression for the transition temperature as a function of the size of the system, $% T_c(\{L_i\})$, $i=1, 2, ..., d$. For D=3 we particularize this formula, taking $L_1=L_2=... =L_d=L$ for the physically interesting cases $d=1$ (a film), $d=2$ (an infinitely long wire having a square cross-section), and for $d=3$ (a cube). For completeness, the corresponding formulas for second-order transitions are also presented. Comparison with experimental data for superconducting films and wires shows qualitative agreement with our theoretical expressions

Existence of Asymptotic Expansions in Noncommutative Quantum Field Theories

Starting from the complete Mellin representation of Feynman amplitudes for noncommutative vulcanized scalar quantum field theory, introduced in a previous publication, we generalize to this theory the study of asymptotic behaviours under scaling of arbitrary subsets of external invariants of any Feynman amplitude. This is accomplished for both convergent and renormalized amplitudes.

Non-Commutative Complete Mellin Representation for Feynman Amplitudes

We extend the complete Mellin (CM) representation of Feynman amplitudes to the non-commutative quantum field theories. This representation is a versatile tool. It provides a quick proof of meromorphy of Feynman amplitudes in parameters such as the dimension of space-time. In particular it paves the road for the dimensional renormalization of these theories. This complete Mellin representation also allows the study of asymptotic behavior under rescaling of arbitrary subsets of external invariants of any Feynman amplitude.
