Detection of topological transitions by transport through molecules and nanodevices

We analyze the phase transitions of an interacting electronic system weakly coupled to free-electron leads by considering its zero-bias conductance. This is expressed in terms of two effective impurity models for the cases with and without spin degeneracy. We demonstrate using the half-filled ionic Hubbard ring that the weight of the first conductance peak as a function of external flux or of the difference in gate voltages between even and odd sites allows one to identify the topological charge transition between a correlated insulator and a band insulator.

Spin-charge separation in Aharonov-Bohm rings of interacting electrons

We investigate the properties of strongly correlated electronic models on a flux-threaded ring connected to semi-infinite free-electron leads. The interference pattern of such an Aharonov-Bohm ring shows sharp dips at certain flux values, determined by the filling, which are a consequence of spin-charge separation in a nanoscopic system.

Quasiparticle anisotropy and pseudogap formation from the weak-coupling renormalization group point of view

Using the one-loop functional renormalization group technique we evaluate the self-energy in the weak-coupling regime of the 2D t-t' Hubbard model. At van Hove (vH) band fillings and at low temperatures the quasiparticle weight along the Fermi surface (FS) continuously vanishes on approaching the (pi,0) point where the quasiparticle concept is invalid. Away from vH band fillings the quasiparticle peak is formed inside an anisotropic pseudogap and the self-energy has the conventional Fermi-liquid characteristics near the Fermi level. The spectral weight of the quasiparticle features is reduced on parts of the FS between the near vicinity of hot spots and the FS points closest to (pi,0) and (0,pi).

Nature of the insulating phases in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional "ionic" Hubbard model with an alternating periodic potential at half-filling by numerical diagonalization of finite systems with the Lanczos and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We identify an insulator-insulator phase transition from a band to a correlated insulator with simultaneous charge and bond-charge order. The transition point is characterized by the vanishing of the optical excitation gap while simultaneously the charge and spin gaps remain finite and equal. Indications for a possible second transition into a Mott-insulator phase are discussed.

Renormalization group analysis of magnetic and superconducting instabilities near van Hove band fillings

Phase diagrams of the two-dimensional one-band t-t' Hubbard model are obtained within the two-patch and the temperature-cutoff many-patch renormalization group approach. At small t' and at van Hove band fillings antiferromagnetism dominates, while with increasing t' or changing filling antiferromagnetism is replaced by d-wave superconductivity. Near t'=t/2 and close to van Hove band fillings the system is unstable towards ferromagnetism. Away from van Hove band fillings this ferromagnetic instability is replaced by a region with dominating triplet p-wave superconducting correlations. The results of the renormalization-group approach are compared with the mean-field results and the results of the T-matrix approximation.

Theoretical analysis of magnetic Raman scattering in La2CuO4: two-magnon intensity with the inclusion of ring exchange

We evaluate the Raman light scattering intensity for the square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with plaquette ring exchange J_\Box. With the exchange couplings as fixed before from an accurate fit to the spin-wave dispersion in La2CuO4, leading in particular to J_\Box=0.24J, we demonstrate in a parameter free calculation that the inclusion of the plaquette exchange contribution to the dispersion and the magnon-magnon interaction vertex gives a peak position in $B_{1g}$ scattering geometry E_max = 2.71J which is in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Yet, the intrinsic width and the lineshape of the two-magnon remain beyond a descriptions in terms of a spin-only Hamiltonian.

Nature of the Peierls- to Mott-insulator transition in 1D

In order to clarify the physics of the crossover from a Peierls band insulator to a correlated Mott-Hubbard insulator, we analyze ground-state and spectral properties of the one-dimensional half-filled Holstein-Hubbard model using quasi-exact numerical techniques. In the adiabatic limit the transition is connected to the band to Mott insulator transition of the ionic Hubbard model. Depending on the strengths of the electron-phonon coupling and the Hubbard interaction the transition is either first order or evolves continuously across an intermediate phase with finite spin, charge, and optical excitation gaps.

Phase diagram and optical conductivity of the ionic Hubbard model

We investigate the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model with an alternating potential at half-filling by the bosonization technique as well as by numerical diagonalization of finite systems with the Lanczos and DMRG methods. Our results support the existence of a single "metallic" transition point from a band to a correlated insulator with simultaneous charge and bond-charge order. In addition, we present results for the optical conductivity obtained by the dynamical DMRG method. The insulator-insulator phase transition scenario is discussed in detail including a critical review of existing approaches and results for the ionic Hubbard model.

Spin Excitations in La2CuO4: Consistent Description by Inclusion of Ring-Exchange

We consider the square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with plaquette ring exchange and a finite interlayer coupling leading to a consistent description of the spin-wave excitation spectrum in La2CuO4. The values of the in-plane exchange parameters, including ring-exchange J_{\Box}, are obtained consistently by an accurate fit to the experimentally observed in-plane spin-wave dispersion, while the out-of-plane exchange interaction is found from the temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization at low temperatures. The fitted exchange interactions J=151.9 meV and J_{\Box}=0.24 J give values for the spin stiffness and the Neel temperature in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Suppression of static stripe formation by next-neighbor hopping

We show from real-space Hartree-Fock calculations within the extended Hubbard model that next-nearest neighbor (t') hopping processes act to suppress the formation of static charge stripes. This result is confirmed by investigating the evolution of charge-inhomogeneous corral and stripe phases with increasing t' of both signs. We propose that large t' values in YBCO prevent static stripe formation, while anomalously small t' in LSCO provides an additional reason for the appearance of static stripes only in these systems.

Quantum Interference Phenomena Between Impurity States in d-wave Superconductors

We investigate the mutual influence of impurities in two-dimensional d-wave superconductors involving self-consistent solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The local order parameter suppression, the local density of states (LDOS) as well as the interference of impurity-induced structures are analyzed. We employ an impurity position averaging scheme for the DOS that does not neglect these interference effects, as the commonly used $T$-matrix approaches do.

Lattice anisotropy as microscopic origin of static stripes in cuprates

Structural distortions in cuprate materials offer a microscopic origin for anisotropies in electron transport in the basal plane. Using a real-space Hartree-Fock approach, we consider the ground states of the anisotropic Hubbard (t_x \ne t_y) and t-J (t_x \ne t_y, J_x \ne J_y) models. Symmetrical but inhomogeneous (``polaronic'') charge structures in the isotropic models are altered even by rather small anisotropies to one-dimensional, stripe-like features. We find two distinct types of stripe, namely uniformly filled, antiphase domain walls and non-uniform, half-filled, in-phase ones. We characterize their properties, energies and dependence on the model parameters, including filling and anisotropy in t (and J). We discuss the connections among these results, other theoretical studies and experimental observation.

Anisotropic conductivity in superconducting NCCO

The low temperature behaviour of the in-plane and c-axis conductivity of electron-doped cuprates like NCCO is examined; it is shown to be consistent with an isotropic quasiparticle scattering rate and an anisotropic interlayer hopping parameter which is non-zero for planar momenta along the direction of the d$_{x^2-y^2}$ order parameter nodes. Based on these hypotheses we find that both, the in-plane and the c-axis conductivity, vary linearly with temperature, in agreement with experimental data at millimiter-wave frequencies.

η-superconductivity in the Hubbard chain with pair hopping

The ground state phase diagram of the 1D Hubbard chain with pair-hopping interaction is studied. The analysis of the model is performed using the continuum-limit field theory approach and exact diagonalization studies. At half-filling the phase diagram is shown to consist of two superconducting states with Cooper pair center-of-mass momentum Q=0 (BCS-η_0 phase) and Q=π(η_π-phase) and four insulating phases corresponding to the Mott antiferromagnet, the Peierls dimerized phase, the charge-density-wave (CDW) insulator as well as an unconventional insulating phase characterized by the coexistence of a CDW and a bond-located staggered magnetization. Away from half-filling the phase diagram consists of the superconducting BCS-η_0 and η_πphases and the metallic Luttinger-liquid phase. The BCS-η_0 phase exhibits smooth crossover from a weak-coupling BCS type to a strong coupling local-pair regime. The η_πphase shows properties of the doublon (zero size Cooper pair) superconductor with Cooper pair center-of-mass momentum Q=π. The transition into the η_π- paired state corresponds to an abrupt change in the groundstate structure. After the transition the conduction band is completely destroyed and a new η_π-pair band corresponding to the strongly correlated doublon motion is created.

Anisotropic conductivity of Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-δ} films at submillimeter wavelengths

The anisotropic conductivity of thin Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ films was measured in the frequency range 8 cm$^{-1}<ν<$ 40 cm$^{-1}$ and for temperatures 4 K $<T<300$ K. A tilted sample geometry allowed to extract both, in-plane and c-axis properties. The in-plane quasiparticle scattering rate remains unchanged as the sample becomes superconducting. The temperature dependence of the in-plane conductivity is reasonably well described using the Born limit for a d-wave superconductor. Below $T_{{\rm C}%}$ the c-axis dielectric constant $ε_{1c}$ changes sign at the screened c-axis plasma frequency. The temperature dependence of the c-axis conductivity closely follows the linear in T behavior within the plane.

Anisotropy of the Energy Gap in the Insulating Phase of the U-t-t' Hubbard Model

We apply a diagrammatic expansion method around the atomic limit (U >> t) for the U-t-t' Hubbard model at half filling and finite temperature by means of a continued fraction representation of the one-particle Green's function. From the analysis of the spectral function A(\vec{k},ω) we find an energy dispersion relation with a (cos k_x-cos k_y)^2 modulation of the energy gap in the insulating phase. This anisotropy is compared with experimental ARPES results on insulating cuprates.

Collective Spin Fluctuation Mode and Raman Scattering in Superconducting Cuprates

Although the low frequency electronic Raman response in the superconducting state of the cuprates can be largely understood in terms of a d-wave energy gap, a long standing problem has been an explanation for the spectra observed in the $A_{1g}$ polarization orientations. We present calculations which suggest that the peak position of the observed $A_{1g}$ spectra is due to a collective spin fluctuation mode.
