Quantum Gases in the Microcanonical Ensemble near the Thermodynamic Limit

A new method is proposed for a treatment of ideal quantum gases in the microcanonical ensemble near the thermodynamic limit. The method allows rigorous asymptotic calculations of the average number of particles and particle number fluctuations in the microcanonical ensemble. It gives also the finite-volume corrections due to exact energy conservation for the total average number of particles and for higher moments of the particle number distribution in a system approaching the thermodynamic limit. A present consideration confirms our previous findings that the scaled variance for particle number fluctuations in the microcanonical ensemble is different from that in the grand canonical ensemble even in the thermodynamic limit.

Particle Number Fluctuations in the Microcanonical Ensemble

Particle number fluctuations are studied in the microcanonical ensemble. For the Boltzmann statistics we deduce exact analytical formulae for the microcanonical partition functions in the case of non-interacting massless neutral particles and charged particles with zero net charge. The particle number fluctuations are calculated and we find that in the microcanonical ensemble they are suppressed in comparison to the fluctuations in the canonical and grand canonical ensembles. This remains valid in the thermodynamic limit too, so that the well-known equivalence of all statistical ensembles refers to average quantities, but does not apply to fluctuations. In the thermodynamic limit we are able to calculate the particle number fluctuations in the system of massive bosons and fermions when the exact conservation laws of both the energy and charge are taken into account.

Charmonium chemistry in A+A collisions at relativistic energies

Charmonium production and suppression in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies is investigated within different models, i.e. the comover absorption model, the threshold suppression model, the statistical coalescence model and the HSD transport approach. In HSD the charmonium dissociation cross sections with mesons are described by a simple phase-space parametrization including an effective coupling strength $|M_i|^2$ for the charmonium states $i=χ_c, J/ψ, ψ^\prime$. This allows to include the backward channels for charmonium reproduction by $D \bar{D}$ channels -- which are missed in the comover absorption and threshold suppression model -- employing detailed balance without introducing any new parameters. It is found that all approaches yield a reasonable description of $J/ψ$ suppression in S+U and Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energies. However, they differ significantly in the $ψ^\prime/J/ψ$ ratio versus centrality at SPS and especially at RHIC energies. These pronounced differences can be exploited in future measurements at RHIC to distinguish the hadronic rescattering scenarios from quark coalescence close to the QGP phase boundary.

Charm coalescence at relativistic energies

The J/psi yield at midrapidity at the top RHIC (relativistic heavy ion collider) energy is calculated within the statistical coalescence model, which assumes charmonium formation at the late stage of the reaction from the charm quarks and antiquarks created earlier in hard parton collisions. The results are compared to the new PHENIX data and to predictions of the standard models, which assume formation of charmonia exclusively at the initial stage of the reaction and their subsequent suppression. Two versions of the suppression scenario are considered. One of them assumes gradual charmonium suppression by comovers, while the other one supposes that the suppression sets in abruptly due to quark-gluon plasma formation. Surprisingly, both versions give very similar results. In contrast, the statistical coalescence model predicts a few times larger $J/ψ$ yield in the most central collisions.

A model-independent analysis of the dependence of the anomalous J/psi suppression on the number of participant nucleons

A recently published experimental dependence of the J/psi to Drell-Yan ratio on the measured, by a zero degree calorimeter, forward energy E_ZDC in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS is analyzed. Using a model-independent approach it is shown that the data are at variance with an earlier published experimental dependence of the same quantity on the transverse energy of neutral hadrons E_T. The discrepancy is related to a moderate centrality region: 100 < N_p < 200 (N_p is the number of participant nucleons) and is peculiar only to the data obtained within the `minimum bias' analysis (using the `theoretical Drell-Yan'). This could result from systematic experimental errors in the minimum bias sample. A possible source of the errors is discussed.

Statistical hadronization of charm in heavy ion collisions

Production of open and hidden charm hadrons in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical coalescence model (SCM). Charmed quark-antiquark pairs are assumed to be created at the initial stage of the reaction in hard parton collisions. The number of these pairs is conserved during the evolution of the system. At hadronization, the charmed (anti)quarks are distributed among open and hidden charm hadrons in accordance with laws of statistical mechanics. Important special cases: a system with a small number of charmed quark-antiquark pairs and charm hadronization in a subsystem of the whole system are considered. The model calculations are compared with the preliminary PHENIX data for J/psi production at RHIC. Possible influence of the in-nuclear modification of the parton distribution functions (shadowing) on the SCM results is studied.

Statistical hadronization of charmed quarks at SPS and RHIC

Production of open and hidden charm hadrons in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical coalescence model. The charmed quark-antiquark pairs are assumed to be created at the initial stage of the reaction in hard parton collisions. The number of these pairs is conserved during the evolution of the system. At the hadronization stage, the charmed (anti)quarks are distributed among open and hidden charm hadrons in accordance with the laws of statistical mechanics. The model is in agreement with the experimental data on J/psi to Drell-Yan ratio in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS. This agreement can be reached only if a rather strong enhancement of the open charm production in central Pb+Pb collisions is assumed. A possible mechanism of the charm enhancement is discussed. At the top RHIC energy, the model predicts an increase of J/psi to Drell-Yan ratio in more central nucleus-nucleus collisions with respect to less central ones.

Comment to `The dependence of the anomalous J/psi suppression on the number of participant nucleons'

The recently published experimental dependence of the J/psi suppression pattern in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS on the energy of zero degree calorimeter E_ZDC are analyzed. It is found that the data obtained within the `minimum bias' analysis (using `theoretical Drell-Yan') are at variance with the previously published experimental dependence of the same quantity on the transversal energy of neutral hadrons E_T. The discrepancy is related to the moderate centrality region: 100 < N_p < 200 (N_p is the number of nucleon participants). This could result from systematic experimental errors in the minimum bias sample. A possible source of the errors may be contamination of the minimum bias sample by off-target interactions. The data obtained within the standard analysis (using measured Drell-Yan multiplicity) are found to be much less sensitive to the contamination.

The High E_T Drop of J/psi to Drell-Yan Ratio from the Statistical c anti-c Coalescence Model

The dependence of the J/psi yield on the transverse energy E_T in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical c anti-c coalescence model. The model fits the NA50 data for Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS even in the high-E_T region (E_T > 100 GeV). Here E_T-fluctuations and E_T-losses in the dimuon event sample naturally create the celebrated drop in the J/psi to Drell-Yan ratio.

Statistical Coalescence Model Analysis of J/psi Production in Pb+Pb Collisions at 158 A GeV

Production of J/ψmesons in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical coalescence model. The model is in agreement with the experimental data of the NA50 Collaboration for Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV in a wide centrality range, including the so called ``anomalous'' suppression domain. The model description of the J/psi data requires, however, strong enhancement of the open charm production in central Pb+Pb collisions. This model prediction may be checked in the future SPS runs.

Statistical J/psi production and open charm enhancement in Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS

Production of open and hidden charm hadrons in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical coalescence model. Charmed quarks and antiquarks are assumed to be created at the initial stage of the reaction and their number is conserved during the evolution of the system. They are distributed among open and hidden charm hadrons at the hadronization stage in accordance with laws of statistical mechanics. The model is in excellent agreement with the experimental data on J/psi production in lead-lead collisions at CERN SPS and predicts strong enhancement of the open charm multiplicity over the standard extrapolation from nucleon-nucleon to nucleus-nucleus collisions. A possible mechanism of the charm enhancement is proposed.

J/psi Suppression and Enhancement in Au+Au Collisions at the BNL RHIC

We consider the production of the J/psi mesons in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies in the statistical coalescence model with an exact (canonical ensemble) charm conservation. The c\bar{c} quark pairs are assumed to be created in the primary hard parton collisions, but the formation of the open and hidden charm particles takes place at the hadronization stage and follows the prescription of statistical mechanics. The dependence of the J/psi production on both the number of nucleon participants and the collision energy is studied. The model predicts the J/psi suppression for low energies, whereas at the highest RHIC energy the model reveals the J/psi enhancement.

Statistical Coalescence Model with Exact Charm Conservation

The statistical coalescence model for the production of open and hidden charm is considered within the canonical ensemble formulation. The data for the J/psi multiplicity in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV are used for the model prediction of the open charm yield which has not yet been measured in these reactions.

Open Charm Enhancement in Pb+Pb Collisions at SPS

The statistical coalescence model for the production of open and hidden charm is considered within the canonical ensemble formulation. The data for the J/ψmultiplicity in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV are used for the model prediction of the open charm yield. We find a strong enhancement of the open charm production, by a factor of about 2--4, over the standard hard-collision model extrapolation from nucleon-nucleon to nucleus-nucleus collisions. A possible mechanism of the open charm enhancement in A+A collisions at the SPS energies is proposed.

Van der Waals Excluded Volume Model of Multicomponent Hadron Gas

A generalization of the Van der Waals excluded volume procedure for the multicomponent hadron gas is proposed. The derivation is based on the grand canonical partition function for the system of particles of several species interacting by hard core potentials. The obtained formulae for thermodynamical quantities are consistent with underlying principles of statistical mechanics as well as with thermodynamical identities. The model can be applied to the analysis of experimental data for particle number ratios in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Hadron Probing of the Deuteron Structure at Short Distances in Deuteron Breakup Reactions

We discuss deuteron $A(d,p)X$ breakup and cumulative pion production $A(d,π)X$ in the framework of constituent quark model of the deuteron. We demonstrate that consideration of the Pauli principle at the quark level, as well as multiple scattering, affect drastically cross section and polarization observables of these reactions and provide good description of the experimental data.
