An introduction to the Ginzburg-Landau theory of phase transitions and nonequilibrium patterns

This paper presents an introduction to phase transitions and critical phenomena on the one hand, and nonequilibrium patterns on the other, using the Ginzburg-Landau theory as a unified language. In the first part, mean-field theory is presented, for both statics and dynamics, and its validity tested self-consistently. As is well known, the mean-field approximation breaks down below four spatial dimensions, where it can be replaced by a scaling phenomenology. The Ginzburg-Landau formalism can then be used to justify the phenomenological theory using the renormalization group, which elucidates the physical and mathematical mechanism for universality. In the second part of the paper it is shown how near pattern forming linear instabilities of dynamical systems, a formally similar Ginzburg-Landau theory can be derived for nonequilibrium macroscopic phenomena. The real and complex Ginzburg-Landau equations thus obtained yield nontrivial solutions of the original dynamical system, valid near the linear instability. Examples of such solutions are plane waves, defects such as dislocations or spirals, and states of temporal or spatiotemporal (extensive) chaos.

Nonlinear bending of molecular films by polarized light

A theory of photoinduced directed bending of non-crystalline molecular films is presented. Our approach is based on elastic deformation of the film due to interaction between molecules ordered through polarized light irradiation. The shape of illuminated film is obtained in the frame of the nonlinear elasticity theory. It is shown that the shape and the curvature of the film depend on the polarization and intensity of the light. The curvature of an irradiated film is a non-monotonic function of the extinction coefficient.

Orientational instabilities in nematics with weak anchoring under combined action of steady flow and external fields

We study the homogeneous and the spatially periodic instabilities in a nematic liquid crystal layer subjected to steady plane {\em Couette} or {\em Poiseuille} flow. The initial director orientation is perpendicular to the flow plane. Weak anchoring at the confining plates and the influence of the external {\em electric} and/or {\em magnetic} field are taken into account. Approximate expressions for the critical shear rate are presented and compared with semi-analytical solutions in case of Couette flow and numerical solutions of the full set of nematodynamic equations for Poiseuille flow. In particular the dependence of the type of instability and the threshold on the azimuthal and the polar anchoring strength and external fields is analysed.

Dynamics of cholesteric structures in an electric field

Motivated by Lehmann-like rotation phenomena in cholesteric drops we study the transverse drift of two types of cholesteric fingers, which form rotating spirals in thin layers of cholesteric liquid crystal in an ac or dc electric field. We show that electrohydrodynamic effects induced by Carr-Helfrich charge separation or flexoelectric charge generation can describe the drift of cholesteric fingers. We argue that the observed Lehmann-like phenomena can be understood on the same basis.

Transition to spatially periodic patterns in nematics under oscillatory shear flow: linear analysis

We consider the orientational instabilities, both homogeneous and spatially periodic, developing in a nematic liquid crystal under rectilinear oscillatory Couette flow for director alignment perpendicular to the flow plane. Using numerical and analytical approaches we determine the critical amplitude of oscillatory flow instabilities, the critical wave number and the symmetry of the destabilizing mode. It was found, that by varying of the oscillatory flow frequency the instability changes its temporal symmetry. The mechanism of this transition is coupled with the inertia of the nematic fluid. We also shown that an electric field applied to the nematic layer can induce switching between instabilities with different spatial and temporal symmetries. The complete phase diagram of the flow instabilities is presented

Crossover Between Flexoelectric Stripe Patterns and Electroconvection in Hybrid Aligned Nematics

We report experimental and theoretical results on the flexoelectric instability and crossover between flexoelectric domains and electroconvection in a hybrid aligned nematic MBBA under d.c. voltage. At threshold a spatially periodic flexoelectric deformation in the form of longitudinal domains (along the planar director) was observed. With increasing voltage the director deviation out of the initial plane becomes clearly detectable. Observations of tracers show that hydrodynamic flow develops inside the flexoelectric stripe pattern in the form of circular orbits perpendicular to the domain stripes. With further increasing d.c. voltage electroconvection sets in in the form of drifting oblique rolls inside the flexoelectric domains.

Temperature Dependence of Anchoring Energy of MBBA on SiO-Evaporated Substrate

The temperature behaviour of the anchoring energy of nematic liquid crystal MBBA at the substrates with oblique SiO evaporation and director orientation at the interface have been studied by means of magnetic Freedericksz transition technique. The temperature dependence of the coefficients in the phenomenological model of surface anchoring energy has been determined.

Dynamics of Nematic Liquid Crystal under Oscillatory Flow: Influence of Surface Viscosity

We analyse the influence of a surface viscosity on the orientational dynamics of a nematic liquid crystal subjected to an oscillatory Couette flow. Approximate analytical solutions of nematohydrodynamic equations for small flow amplitudes are calculated and compared with the results of full numerical simulations. The range of flow frequencies where the surface viscosity has strong influence on the optical response is determined.

Flexoelectric Instability in Nematic Liquid Crystal between Coaxial Cylinders

The stability of the equilibrium configurations of a nematic liquid crystal confined between two coaxial cylinders is analysed when a radial electric field is applied and the flexoelectric effect is taken into account. The threshold for perturbations depending only on the radius r in the cylindrical coordinate system and strong boundary conditions is studied. A new type of orientational transition caused by pure flexoelectric effect is found.

Drifting Abnormal Rolls in Electroconvection of Hybrid Aligned Nematic

We report experimental and theoretical results on the conductive regime of electroconvection in hybrid aligned nematics. The drifting oblique/normal rolls below/above the Lifshitz frequency are observed at the onset of electroconvection under a.c. voltage. The experimental data on the threshold voltage, wavelength, oblique angle and drift period of the rolls as function of a.c. frequency are in good agreement with the results of linear stability analysis. The transition from drifting oblique rolls to abnormal rolls is found below the Lifshitz frequency with increasing applied voltage.

Influence of weak anchoring on flow instabilities in nematic liquid crystals

We analyse the homogeneous instabilities in a nematic liquid crystal subjected to plane steady Couette or Poiseuille flow in the case when the director is pre-aligned perpendicular to the flow plane taking into account weak anchoring at the confining surfaces. The critical shear rate decreases for decreasing anchoring strength and goes to zero in the limit of torque-free boundary conditions. For Poiseuille flow one has two types of instability depending on the values of the azimuthal ($W_a$) and polar ($W_p$) surface anchoring strengths. The critical line in $(W_a,W_p)$ space which separates the two instabilities regimes is obtained.

Orientational transition in nematic liquid crystals under oscillatory Poiseuille flow

We investigate the orientational behaviour of a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal subjected to an oscillatory plane Poiseuille flow produced by an alternating pressure gradient. For small pressure amplitudes the director oscillates within the flow plane around the initial homeotropic position, whereas for higher amplitudes a spatially homogeneous transition to out-of-plane director motion was observed for the first time. The orientational transition was found to be supercritical and the measured frequency dependence of the critical pressure amplitude in the range between 2 and 20 Hz was in quantitative agreement with a recent theory.

Director precession and nonlinear waves in nematic liquid crystals under elliptic shear

Elliptic shear applied to a homeotropically oriented nematic above the electric bend Freedericks transition (FT) generates slow precession of the director. The character of the accompanying nonlinear waves changes from diffusive phase waves to dispersive ones exhibiting spirals and spatio-temporal chaos as the FT is approached from above. An exact solution of the flow alignment equations captures the observed precession and predicts its reversal for non-flow aligning materials. The FT transforms into a Hopf bifurcation opening the way to understand the wave phenomena.
