Spatial amplitude and phase modulation using commercial twisted nematic LCDs

We present a method for full spatial phase and amplitude control of a laser beam using a twisted nematic liquid crystal display combined with a spatial filter. By spatial filtering we combine four neighboring pixels into one superpixel. At each superpixel we are able to independently modulate the phase and the amplitude of light. We demonstrate experimentally the independent phase and amplitude modulation using this novel technique. Our technique does not impose special requirements on the spatial light modulator and allows precise control of fields even with imperfect modulators.

Phase control algorithms for focusing light through turbid media

Light propagation in materials with microscopic inhomogeneities is affected by scattering. In scattering materials, such as powders, disordered metamaterials or biological tissue, multiple scattering on sub-wavelength particles makes light diffuse. Recently, we showed that it is possible to construct a wavefront that focuses through a solid, strongly scattering object. The focusing wavefront uniquely matches a certain configuration of the particles in the medium. To focus light through a turbid liquid or living tissue, it is necessary to dynamically adjust the wavefront as the particles in the medium move. Here we present three algorithms for constructing a wavefront that focuses through a scattering medium. We analyze the dynamic behavior of these algorithms and compare their sensitivity to measurement noise. The algorithms are compared both experimentally and using numerical simulations. The results are in good agreement with an intuitive model, which may be used to develop dynamic diffusion compensators with applications in, for example, light delivery in human tissue.

A spatial refractive index sensor using whispering gallery modes in an optically trapped microsphere

We propose the use of an optically trapped, dye doped polystyrene microsphere for spatial probing of the refractive index at any position in a fluid. We demonstrate the use of the dye embedded in the microsphere as an internal broadband excitation source, thus eliminating the need for a tunable excitation source. We measured the full width at half maximum of the TE and TM resonances, and their frequency spacing as a function of the refractive index of the immersion fluid. From these relations we obtained an absolute sensitivity of 5e-4 in local refractive index, even when the exact size of the microsphere was not a priori known.

Recognition of paper samples by correlation of their speckle patterns

Buchanan et al. [Nature 436, p. 475 (2005)] have shown that it is possible to recognize paper samples via their speckle pattern by using a line-shaped laser focus, four photo detectors and a scanning mechanism. In this report recognition of five out of ten paper samples is presented. The sample was illuminated by a 2.62 +- 0.02 mm circular spot and the reflected light was measured by a static CCD. We have formulated a criterion for recognition that limits the probability of false recognition to 0.1 % for the experiment with ten samples. We obtained results that show that the probability of false recognition will be negligible for a large amount of samples. The properties of speckle originating from a line and a spot illumination source have been compared to see whether the use of a line results in major advantages for the recognition of samples.

Focusing of light by random scattering

Random scattering of light is what makes materials such as white paint, clouds and biological tissue opaque. We show that although light propagating in these media is diffuse, a high degree of control is possible as phase information is not irreversibly lost. Opaque objects such as eggshell or white paint focus coherent light as sharply as a lens when illuminated with a wavefront that inverts the wave diffusion. We demonstrate the construction of such wavefronts using feedback, achieving a focus that is 1000 times brighter than the diffusely transmitted light. Our results are explained quantitatively by a universal relation based on statistical optics.

Spatial quantum correlations in multiple scattered light

We predict a new spatial quantum correlation in light propagating through a multiple scattering random medium. The correlation depends on the quantum state of the light illuminating the medium, is infinite range, and dominates over classical mesoscopic intensity correlations. The spatial quantum correlation is revealed in the quantum fluctuations of the total transmission or reflection through the sample and should be readily observable experimentally.

Atomic Gases at Negative Kinetic Temperature

We show that thermalization of the motion of atoms at negative temperature is possible in an optical lattice, for conditions that are feasible in current experiments. We present a method for reversibly inverting the temperature of a trapped gas. Moreover, a negative-temperature ensemble can be cooled, reducing abs(T), by evaporation of the lowest-energy particles. This enables the attainment of the Bose-Einstein condensation phase transition at negative temperature.

Rotationally induced Penning ionization of ultracold photoassociated helium dimers

We have studied photoassociation of metastable \tripS helium atoms near the \tripS-\tripP asymptote by both ion detection in a magneto-optical trap and trap-loss measurements in a magnetic trap. A detailed comparison between the results of the two experiments gives insight into the mechanism of the Penning ionization process. We have identified four series of resonances corresponding to vibrational molecular levels belonging to different rotational states in two potentials. The corresponding spin states become quasi-purely quintet at small interatomic distance, and Penning ionization is inhibited by spin conservation rules. Only a weak rotational coupling is responsible for the contamination by singlet spin states leading to a detectable ion signal. However, for one of these series Bose statistics does not enable the rotational coupling and the series detected through trap-loss does not give rise to sufficient ionization for detection.

Analysis of Photoassociation Spectra for Giant Helium Dimers

We perform a theoretical analysis to interpret the spectra of purely long-range helium dimers produced by photoassociation (PA) in an ultra-cold gas of metastable helium atoms. The experimental spectrum obtained with the PA laser tuned closed to the $2^3S_1\leftrightarrow 2^3P_0$ atomic line has been reported in a previous Letter. Here, we first focus on the corrections to be applied to the measured resonance frequencies in order to infer the molecular binding energies. We then present a calculation of the vibrational spectra for the purely long-range molecular states, using adiabatic potentials obtained from perturbation theory. With retardation effects taken into account, the agreement between experimental and theoretical determinations of the spectrum for the $0_u^+$ purely long-range potential well is very good. The results yield a determination of the lifetime of the $2^3P$ atomic state.

Giant Helium Dimers Produced by Photoassociation of Ultracold Metastable Atoms

We produce giant helium dimers by photoassociation of metastable helium atoms in a magnetically trapped, ultracold cloud. The photoassociation laser is detuned red of the atomic $2^3S_1 - 2^3P_0 $ line and produces strong heating of the sample when resonant with molecular bound states. The temperature of the cloud serves as an indicator of the molecular spectrum. We report good agreement between our spectroscopic measurements and our calculations of the five bound states belonging to a $0_u^+$ purely long-range potential well. These previously unobserved states have classical inner turning points of about 150 $a_0$ and outer turning points as large as 1150 $a_0$.

Atomic Deuterium Adsorbed on the Surface of Liquid Helium

We investigate deuterium atoms adsorbed on the surface of liquid helium in equilibrium with a vapor of atoms of the same species. These atoms are studied by a sensitive optical method based on spectroscopy at a wavelength of 122 nm, exciting the 1S-2P transition. We present a direct measurement of the adsorption energy of deuterium atoms on helium and show evidence for the existence of resonantly enhanced recombination of atoms residing on the surface to molecules.
