Electrically-gated laser-induced spin dynamics in magneto-electric iron garnet at room temperature

Ultrafast pump-probe imaging reveals that the efficiency of optical excitation of coherent spins waves in epitaxial iron garnet films can be effectively controlled by an external electric field at room temperature. Although a femtosecond laser pulse alone does not excite any pronounced coherent spin oscillations, an electrical gating with the field of 0.5 MV/m dramatically changes the outcome in a laser-induced launching of spin waves. The effect, demonstrated under room-temperature conditions, is estimated to be orders of magnitude larger than in magnetic van der Waals semiconductors observed at 10 K. This electrical gating of laser-induced spin dynamics enriches opto-magnonics with a new tool and thus opens up a new avenue in fundamental and applied magnonics research.

Predicting the Structural, Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Few Atomic-layer Polar Perovskite

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to predict the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of electrically neutral or charged few-atomic-layer (AL) oxides whose parent systems are based on polar perovskite $KTaO_{3}$. Their properties vary greatly with the number of ALs ($n_{AL}$) and the stoichiometric ratio. In the few-AL limit ($n_{AL}\leqslant 14$), the even AL (EL) systems with chemical formula $(KTaO_{3})_{n}$ are semiconductors, while the odd AL (OL) systems with formula ($K_{n+1}Ta_{n}O_{3n+1}$ or $K_{n}Ta_{n+1}O_{3n+2}$) are half-metal except for the unique $KTa_{2}O_{5}$ case which is a semiconductor due to the large Peierls distortions. After reaching certain critical thickness ($n_{AL}>14$), the EL systems show ferromagnetic surface states, while ferromagnetism disappears in the OL systems. These predictions from fundamental complexity of polar perovskite when approaching the two-dimensional (2D) limit may be helpful for interpreting experimental observations later.

Spin-order-induced multiferroicity in LiCuFe2(VO4)3 and disorder effects in NaCuFe2(VO4)3

Mixed spin chain compounds, ACuFe2(VO4)3 (A= Li,Na), reach magnetically ordered state at TN ~ 11 K (Li) or ~ 9 K (Na) and experience further transformation of magnetic order at T* ~ 7 K (Li) or ~ 5 K (Na), evidenced in magnetic susceptibility chi and specific heat Cp measurements. While no anomaly has been detected in dielectric property of NaCuFe2(VO4)3, the step-like feature precedes a sharp peak in permittivity epsilon at TN in LiCuFe2(VO4)3. These data suggest the spin-order-induced ferroelectricity in Li compound and no such thing in Na compound. On the contrary, the Moessbauer spectroscopy study suggests similarly wide distribution of hyperfine field in between T* and TN for both the compounds. The first principles calculations also provide similar values for magnetic exchange interaction parameters in both compounds. These observations lead us to conclude on the crucial role of alkali metals mobility within the channels of the crystal structure needed to be considered in explaining the improper multiferroicity in one compound and its absence in other.

Magnetic Bubble Domain Blowing with Electric Probe

The problem of bubble domain generation is revisited from a new perspective that was opened by recent findings in the field of physics of magnetic skyrmions. The single bubble domain can be generated under the tip electrode touching the surface of dielectric iron garnet film by positive step-like voltage pulse and its equilibrium size can be increased with further rising of electric potential. The theoretical analysis shows that the same mechanism can be used to stabilize the submicron bubbles topologically equivalent to the skyrmion.

Spin flexoelectricity and chiral spin structures in magnetic films

In this short review a broad range of chiral phenomena observed in magnetic films (spin cycloid and skyrmion structures formation as well as chirality dependent domain wall motion) is considered under the perspective of spin flexoelectricity, i.e. the relation between bending of magnetization pattern and electric polarization. The similarity and the difference between the spin flexoelectricity and the newly emerged notion of spin flexomagnetism is discussed. The phenomenological arguments based on the geometrical idea of curvature-induced effects are supported by analysis of the microscopic mechanisms of spin flexoelectricity based on three-site ion indirect exchange and twisted RKKY interaction models. The electric-field-induced creation of the single skyrmion is predicted.

Electric field induced magnetic domain wall tilting

The inclination of the magnetic domain wall plane in electric field is observed. The simple theoretical model of this phenomenon that takes into account the spin flexoelectricity is proposed. The value of electric polarization of the magnetic domain wall is estimated as 0.3μC/m^2 that agrees well with the results of electric field driven magnetic domain wall motion measurements.

Electric polarization of magnetic textures: new horizons of micromagnetism

A common scenario of magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics is the electric polarization induced by spatially modulated spin structures. It is shown in this paper that the same mechanism works in magnetic dielectrics with inhomogeneous magnetization distribution: the domain walls and magnetic vortexes can be the sources of electric polarization. The electric field driven magnetic domain wall motion is observed in iron garnet films. The electric field induced nucleation of vortex state of magnetic nanodots is theoretically predicted and numerically simulated. From the practical point of view the electric field control of micromagnetic structures is promising for applications in low-power-consumption spintronic and magnonic devices.

Electrically stabilized magnetic vortex and antivortex states in magnetic dielectrics

The micromagnetic distribution in a dielectric nanoparticle is theoretically considered. It is shown that the existence of inhomogeneous magnetoelectric interaction in magnetic dielectrics provides the possibility to stabilize the vortex and antivortex state. The estimation of the critical voltage necessary for vortex/antivortex nucleation in bismuth ferrite and iron garnet nanoparticles yields a value of +/-150 V. This system can be considered as electrically switchable two state-logic magnetic element.

Ferroelectricity of Neel-type magnetic domain walls

The chirality-dependent magnetoelectric properties of Neel-type domain walls in iron garnet films is observed. The electrically driven magnetic domain wall motion changes the direction to the opposite with the reversal of electric polarity of the probe and with the chirality switching of the domain wall from clockwise to counterclockwise. This proves that the origin of the electric field induced micromagnetic structure transformation is inhomogeneous magnetoelectric interaction.

Phase transitions in multiferroic BiFeO3 crystals, thin-layers, and ceramics: Enduring potential for a single phase, room-temperature magnetoelectric 'holy grail'

Magnetic phase transitions in multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) induced by magnetic field, epitaxial strain, and composition modification are considered. These transitions from a spatially modulated spin spiral state to a homogenous antiferromagnetic one are accompanied by the release of latent magnetization and a linear magnetoelectric effect that makes BiFeO3-based materials efficient room-temperature single phase multiferroics.

Flexomagnetoelectric effect in bismuth ferrite

There is a profound analogy between inhomogeneous magnetoelectric effect in multiferroics and flexoelectric effect in liquid crystals. This similarity gives rise to the flexomagnetoelectric polarization induced by spin modulation. The theoretical estimations of flexomagnetoelectric polarization agree with the value of jumps of polarization in magnetoelectric dependences (~20muC/m^2) observed at spin cycloid suppression at critical magnetic field 200kOe.

Quadratic Magnetoelectric Effect and Magnetic Field Induced Pyroelectric Effect in Multiferroic BaMnF4

The experimental studies of magnetoelectric effects in pulse magnetic field up to 250 kOe and their theoretical analysis on the basis of magnetic symmetry consideration are carried out. It is shown that the nonvanishing components of quadratic magnetoelectric effect tensor corresponding to the electric polarization along b- and c-axes point out the triclinic distortion of the crystal symmetry. Anomalous temperature dependence of magnetically induced polarization Pa(Hb) testifies to the magnetically induced pyroelectric effect. The torque curves measurements show the deflection of the spin orientation from the b-axis at 9 degrees of arc.

Electric Field Induced Transformation of Magnetic Domain Structure in Magnetoelectric Iron Garnet Films

The room temperature magnetoelectric effect was observed in epitaxial iron garnet films that appeared as magnetic domain wall motion induced by electric field. The films grown on gadolinium-gallium garnet substrates with various crystallographic orientations were examined. The effect was observed in (210) and (110) films and was not observed in (111) films. Dynamic observation of the domain wall motion in 400 V voltage pulses gave the value of domain wall velocity in the range 30-50 m/s. The same velocity was achieved in magnetic field pulse about 50 Oe.

Magnetoelectric Control of Domain Walls in a Ferrite Garnet Film

The effect of magnetic domain boundaries displacement induced by electric field is observed in epitaxial ferrite garnet films (on substrates with the (210) crystallographic orientation). The effect is odd with respect to the electric field (the direction of wall displacement changes with the polarity of the voltage) and even with respect to the magnetization in domains. The inhomogeneous magnetoelectric interaction as a possible mechanism of the effect is proposed.

Magnetic Magnetoelectric and Magnetoelastic Properties of new multiferroic material NdFe3(BO3)4

Complex experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and magnetoelastic properties of neodymium iron borate NdFe3(BO3)4 along various crystallographic directions have been carried out in strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 230 kOe in a temperature range of 4.2-50 K. It has been found that neodymium iron borate, as well as gadolinium iron borate, is a multiferroic. It has much larger (above 3 10^(-4) C/m^2) electric polarization controlled by the magnetic field and giant quadratic magnetoelectric effect. The exchange field between the rare-earth and iron subsystems (~50 kOe) has been determined for the first time from experimental data. The theoretical analysis based on the magnetic symmetry and quantum properties of the Nd ion in the crystal provides an explanation of an unusual behavior of the magnetoelectric and magnetoelastic properties of neodymium iron borate in strong magnetic fields and correlation observed between them.

Space-Time Parity Violation and Magnetoelectric Interactions in Antiferromagnets

The properties of antiferromagnetic materials with violated space-time parity are considered. Particular attention is given to the bismuth ferrite BiFeO3 ferroelectric magnet. This material is distinguished from other antiferromagnets in that the inversion center is absent in its crystal and magnetic structures. This circumstance gives rise to the diversified and unusual properties, namely, to the appearance of a spatially modulated spin structure and to the unique possibility of the linear magnetoelectric effect coexisting with a weak ferromagnetic moment. The magnetic-induced phase transitions accompanied by the suppression of the modulated spin structure and appearance of a number of new and unusual effects are considered. These are the linear magnetoelectric effect and the appearance of a toroidal moment and a weak ferromagnetic moment of the magnetoelectric nature.
