Low Temperature Magnetothermodynamics of Pr{0.7}Ca{0.3}MnO{3}

We present a detailed magnetothermal study of Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$, a perovskite manganite in which an insulator-metal transition can be driven by magnetic field, but also by pressure, visible light, x-rays, or high currents. We find that the field-induced transition is associated with a large release of energy which accounts for its strong irreversibility. In the ferromagnetic metallic state, specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate a much smaller spin wave stiffness than that seen in any other ferromagnetic manganite, which we explain in terms of ferromagnetism among the Pr moments. The Pr ferromagnetism also appears to influence the low temperature thermodynamic phase diagram of this material and the uniquely sensitive metastability of the insulating state.

Suppression of weak localization effects in low-density metallic 2D holes

We have measured the conductivity in a gated high-mobility GaAs two dimensional hole sample with densities in the range (7-17)x10^9 cm^-2 and at hole temperatures down to 5x10^-3 E_F. We measure the weak localization corrections to the conductivity g=G/(e^2/h) as a function of magnetic field (Delta g=0.019 +/- 0.006 at g=1.5 and T=9 mK) and temperature (d ln g/dT<0.0058 and 0.0084 at g=1.56 and 2.8). These values are less than a few percent of the value 1/pi predicted by standard weak localization theory for a disordered 2D Fermi liquid

Ordering and partial ordering in holmium titanate and related systems

We take another look at two compounds which have been discussed as possible realizations of ``spin ice'', namely holmium titanate and dysprosium titanate. As we have earlier observed, holmium titanate does not display ice-like behaviour at low temperatures because the long ranged dipolar interactions between spins are strong compared to the nearest neighbour interactions. We show, analytically, that the true ground state of this system must be fully ordered, but simulations only reach partially ordered states because there are infinite energy barriers separating these from the true ground state. We also show that the true ground state of our model of dysprosium titanate is also fully ordered, and offer some explanations as to why simulations and experiments show ice-like behaviour. We discuss the effect on these systems of an applied magnetic field. Finally, we discuss several other models which show similar partial or full ordering in their ground states, including the well known Ising model on the fcc lattice.

Soft spin waves in the low temperature thermodynamics of Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}

We present a detailed magnetothermal study of Pr(0.7)Ca(0.3)MnO(3), a perovskite manganite in which an insulator-metal transition can be driven by magnetic field, but also by pressure, visible light, x-rays, or high currents. We find that the field-induced transition is associated with an enormous release of energy which accounts for its strong irreversibility. In the ferromagnetic metallic state, specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate a much smaller spin wave stiffness than that seen in any other manganite, which we attribute to spin waves among the ferromagnetically ordered Pr moments. The coupling between the Pr and Mn spins may also provide a basis for understanding the low temperature phase diagram of this most unusual manganite.

Nonmonotonic Temperature-dependent Resistance in Low Density 2D Hole Gases

The low temperature longitudinal resistance-per-square Rxx(T) in ungated GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells of high peak hole mobility 1.7x10^6 cm^2/Vs is metallic for 2D hole density p as low as 3.8x10^9 cm-2. The electronic contribution to the resistance, R_{el}(T), is a nonmonotonic function of T, exhibiting thermal activation, R_{el}(T) ~ exp{-E_a/kT}, for kT< EF. The form of R_{el}(T) is independent of density, indicating a fundamental relationship between the low and high T scattering mechanisms in the metallic state.

Ising pyrochlore magnets: Low temperature properties, ice rules and beyond

Pyrochlore magnets are candidates for spin-ice behavior. We present theoretical simulations of relevance for the pyrochlore family R2Ti2O7 (R= rare earth) supported by magnetothermal measurements on selected systems. By considering long ranged dipole-dipole as well as short-ranged superexchange interactions we get three distinct behaviours: (i) an ordered doubly degenerate state, (ii) a highly disordered state with a broad transition to paramagnetism, (iii) a partially ordered state with a sharp transition to paramagnetism. Thus these competing interactions can induce behaviour very different from conventional ``spin ice''. Closely corresponding behaviour is seen in the real compounds---in particular Ho2Ti2O7 corresponds to case (iii) which has not been discussed before, rather than (ii) as suggested earlier.

Less than 50% sublattice polarization in an insulating S=3/2 kagome' antiferromagnet at low T

We have found weak long range antiferromagnetic order in the quasi-two-dimensional insulating oxide $ KCr_3(OD)_6(SO_4)_2$ which contains Cr$^{3+}$ S=3/2 ions on a kagomé lattice. In a sample with $\approx$ 76% occupancy of the chromium sites the ordered moment is 1.1(3)$μ_B$ per chromium ion which is only one third of the Néel value $gμ_BS=3μ_B$. The magnetic unit cell equals the chemical unit cell, a situation which is favored by inter-plane interactions. Gapless quantum spin-fluctuations ($Δ/k_B <0.25$K) with a bandwidth of 60K >> $T_N$ = 1.6K are the dominant contribution to the spin correlation function, $S(Q,ω)$ in the ordered phase.

Is a doped 'Kondo' insulator different from doped Silicon?

We have observed the metal-insulator transition in the strongly correlated insulator FeSi with the chemical substitution of Al at the Si site. The magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and field dependent conductivity are measured for Al concentrations ranging from 0 to 0.08. For concentrations greater than 0.01 we find metallic properties quantitatively similar to those measured in Si:P with the exception of a greatly enhanced quasiparticle mass. Below 2 K the temperature and field dependent conductivity can be completely described by the theory of disordered Fermi Liquids.

Nonlinear Susceptibility: A Direct Test of the Quadrupolar Kondo Effect in UBe(13)

We present the nonlinear susceptibility as a direct test of the quadrupolar Kondo scenario for heavy fermion behavior, and apply it to the case of cubic crystal-field symmetry. Within a single-ion model we compute the nonlinear susceptibility resulting from low-lying Γ_3 (5f^2 and Kramers (5f^3) doublets. We find that nonlinear susceptibility measurements on single-crystal UBe_{13} are inconsistent with a quadrupolar 5f^2 ground-state of the uranium ion; the experimental data indicate that the low-lying magnetic excitations of UBe_{13} are predominantly dipolar in character.
