Suppression of crosstalk in coupled plasmonic waveguides

We demonstrate the suppression of crosstalk between two dielectric nanowaveguides by placing an auxiliary linear waveguide between loaded waveguides spaced by one wavelength. The total cross-sectional dimension of the system containing two transmission lines is less than two microns that is hundred times smaller than a cross-section of a system made of dielectric fiber. The propagating modes in these waveguides are the sum and the difference of symmetric and antisymmetric modes of the coupled system. Crosstalk is suppressed by matching the wavenumbers of these modes. The analytically obtained results are confirmed by numerical simulation.

Lowering the lasing threshold of distributed feedback lasers with loss

We study laser generation in 1D distributed feedback lasers with amplifying and lossy layers. We show that when the lasing frequency differs from the transition frequencies of the amplifying medium, loss induced lasing may occur due to the broadening of the resonator mode with increasing loss in the absorbing layers. This broadening leads to a shift in the lasing frequency towards the transition frequency. As a result, the cavity mode interaction with the amplifying medium is enhanced, and the lasing threshold is lowered.

Spaser operation below threshold: autonomous vs. driven spasers

At the plasmon resonance, high Joule losses in a metal nanoparticle of a spaser result in its low Q-factor. Due to the latter, to achieve the spasing regime, in which the number of coherent plasmons exceeds the number of incoherent plasmons, unsustainably high pump rates may be required. We show that under the condition of loss compensation by a spaser driven by an external optical wave, the number of coherent plasmons increases dramatically, and the quantum noise is suppressed. Since the compensation of losses of the driving wave may occur even near the spasing threshold, the number of coherent plasmons may exceed the number of spontaneously excited plasmons at achievable pump rates.

Superradiance of a subwavelength array of independent classical nonlinear emitters

We suggest a mechanism for the emergence of a superradiance burst in a subwavelength array of nonlinear classical emitters. We assume that the emitters interact via their common field of radiative response and that they may have an arbitrary distribution of initially phases. We show that only if this distribution is not uniform, a non-zero field of radiative response arises leading to a superradiance burst. Although this field cannot synchronize the emitters, it forces fast oscillations of a classical nonlinear emitter to have long-period envelopes. Constructive interference in the envelopes creates a large dipole moment of the array which results in a superradiance pulse. The intensity of the superradiance is proportional to the squared number of the emitters, which envelopes participate in the fluctuation.

Superoscillating response of a nonlinear system on a harmonic signal

We demonstrate that a superoscillating in time signal may be obtained as a nonlinear response on a harmonic low-frequency input. Using the realization of a superoscillating function proposed by (Huang et al. 2007 J. Opt. A: Pure Appl. Opt. 9 S285-8) as an example, we synthesize the response function of such a nonlinear transformer and investigated its robustness with respect to the frequency and amplitude variations of the input signal.

All-dielectric nanolaser

We demonstrate theoretically that a subwavelength spherical dielectric nanoparticle coated with a gain shell forms a nanolaser. Lasing modes of such a nanolaser are associated with the Mie resonances of the nanoparticle. We establish a general condition for the lasing threshold and show that the use of high refractive index dielectric media allows for lasing with a threshold significantly lower than that for nanolasers incorporating lossy plasmonic metals.

Comment on 'Counterintuitive Dispersion Violating Kramers-Kronig Relations in Gain Slabs'

In this Comment, we refute conclusions made in Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 233601 (2014) by L.-G. Wang, L. Wang, M. Al-Amri, S.-Y. Zhu, and M. S. Zubairy. These conclusions stem from the use of the linear theory, which is not applicable to systems having poles of the reflection and transmission coefficients in the upper half of the complex frequency plane.

Spontaneous radiation of a two-level atom into multipole modes of a plasmonic nanoparticle

We consider the relaxation of an excited two-level system (TLS) positioned near a spherical plasmonic nanoparticle (NP). The transition frequency of the TLS is assumed to coincide with the frequency of the condensation point of NP plasmonic resonances. We show that the relaxation of the TLS excitation is a two-step process. Following an initial exponential decay, the TLS breaks in to Rabi oscillations. Depending upon the distance between the TLS and NP, the probability of the TLS being in the excited state exhibits either chaotic or nearly regular oscillations. In the latter case, the eigenfrequency of the TLS-NP system coincides with one of NP multipole modes.

Causality and phase transitions in PT-symmetrical optical systems

We discuss phase transitions in PT-symmetric optical systems. We show that due to frequency dispersion of the dielectric permittivity, an optical system can have PT-symmetry at isolated frequency points only. An assumption of the existence of a PT-symmetric system in a continuous frequency interval violates the causality principle. Therefore, the ideal symmetry-breaking transition cannot be observed by simply varying the frequency.

Non-resonant excitation of a two-level atom driven by a superoscillating field

We study counterintuitive dynamics of a two-level system (TLS) interacting with electric field superoscillating in time. We show that a TLS may be excited by an external light pulse whose spectral components are below the absorption line of the TLS. We attribute this unique dynamics to the Rabi oscillations of the TLS in a superoscillating driving field.

Subwavelength plasmonic chain for magneto-optics enhancement

We study the enhancement of the magneto-optical effect in subdiffraction plasmonic chains. We show that in a periodic chain of the plasmonic nanoparticles embedded in a magneto-optical medium, propagation of a guided mode is accompanied by rotation of electrical dipoles (the Faraday effect). The angle of rotation per 1 μm is two orders of magnitude greater than that in the same bulk magneto-optical medium. We also demonstrate that the effect of Ohmic losses can be significantly reduced by using a gain-assisted chain composed of active core-shell nanoparticles (spasers). The dipole mode in such an array of magneto-optical spasers exhibits high values of the Faraday rotation and propagation length.

Loss compensation by spasers in metamaterials

We show that exact loss compensation can be achieved in active metamaterials containing spasers pumped over a wide range of pumping values both below and above the spasing threshold. We demonstrate that the difference between spaser operation below and above spasing threshold vanishes, when the spaser is synchronized by an external field. As the spasing threshold loses its significance, a new pumping threshold, the threshold of loss compensation, arises. Below this threshold, which is smaller than the spasing threshold, compensation is impossible at any frequency of the external field.

Magneto-optical spaser

We present an electrodynamical model of a novel quantum plasmonic device - magneto-optical spaser. It is shown that a spherical gain nanoparticle coated with a metallic magneto-optical shell can operate as a spaser amplifying circularly polarized surface plasmons. The magneto-optical spaser may be used in design of optical isolator in plasmonic transmission lines as well as in spaser spectrometry of chiral molecules.

Exactly solvable toy model for a SPASER

We propose an exactly solvable quasi-classical model of a spaser. The gain medium is described in terms of the nonlinear permittivity with negative losses. The model demonstrates the main features of a spaser: a self-oscillating state (spasing) arising without an external driving field if the pumping exceeds some threshold value, synchronization of a spaser by an external field within the Arnold tongue, and the possibility of compensating for Joule losses when the pumping is below threshold. Similar to the common laser, a transition to the spasing regime takes a form of the Hopf bifurcation.

Superradiance of a 2D-spaser array

We demonstrate that interacting spasers arranged in a 2D array of arbitrary size can be mutually synchronized allowing them to supperradiate. For arrays smaller than the free space wavelength, the total radiated power is proportional to the square of the number N of spasers. For larger arrays, the radiation power is linear in N. However, the emitted beam becomes highly directional with intensity of radiation proportional to N^2 in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the array. Thus, spasers, which mainly amplify near fields, become an efficient source of far field radiation when they are arranged into an array.

Spaser chains

We show that depending on the values of the coupling constants, two different scenarios for the stationary behavior of a chain of interacting spasers may be realized: (1) all the spasers are synchronized and oscillate with a unique phase and (2) a nonlinear autowave travels along the chain. In the latter scenario, the traveling wave is harmonic unlike excitations in other known nonlinear systems. The amplitude of this wave is determined by pumping and the wavenumber is determined by the coupling constants. Due to the nonlinear nature of the system, any initial distribution of spasers' states evolves into one of these steady states.

Rabi oscillations in spasers during the nonradiative plasmon excitation

In the approach to the stationary regime, a spaser exhibits complicated and highly nonlinear dynamics with anharmonic oscillations.1 We demonstrate that these oscillations are due to Rabi oscillations of the quantum dot in the field of the nanoparticle. We show that the oscillations may or may not arise dependent on the initial conditions.
