Griffiths Singularities in the Disordered Phase of a Quantum Ising Spin Glass

We study a model for a quantum Ising spin glass in two space dimensions by Monte Carlo simulations. In the disordered phase at $T=0$, we find power law distributions of the local susceptibility and local non-linear susceptibility, which are characterized by a smoothly varying dynamical exponent $z$. Over a range of the disordered phase near the quantum transition, the local non-linear susceptibility diverges. The local susceptibility does not diverge in the disordered phase but does diverge at the critical point. Approaching the critical point from the disordered phase, the limiting value of $z$ seems to equal its value precisely at criticality, even though the physics of these two cases seems rather different.

Study of Chirality in the Two-Dimensional XY Spin Glass

We study the chirality in the Villain form of the XY spin glass in two--dimensions by Monte Carlo simulations. We calculate the chiral-glass correlation length exponent $ν_{\scriptscriptstyle CG}$ and find that $ν_{\scriptscriptstyle CG} = 1.8 \pm 0.3$ in reasonable agreement with earlier studies. This indicates that the chiral and phase variables are decoupled on long length scales and diverge as $T \to 0$ with {\em different} exponents, since the spin-glass correlation length exponent was found, in earlier studies, to be about 1.0.

A Numerical Study of the Random Transverse-Field Ising Spin Chain

We study numerically the critical region and the disordered phase of the random transverse-field Ising chain. By using a mapping of Lieb, Schultz and Mattis to non-interacting fermions, we can obtain a numerically exact solution for rather large system sizes, $L \le 128$. Our results confirm the striking predictions of earlier analytical work and, in addition, give new results for some probability distributions and scaling functions.

Phase Transition in the Three-Dimensional $\pm J$ Ising Spin Glass

We have studied the three-dimensional Ising spin glass with a $\pm J$ distribution by Monte Carlo simulations. Using larger sizes and much better statistics than in earlier work, a finite size scaling analysis shows quite strong evidence for a finite transition temperature, $T_c$, with ordering below $T_c$. Our estimate of the transition temperature is rather lower than in earlier work, and the value of the correlation length exponent, $ν$, is somewhat higher. Because there may be (unknown) corrections to finite size scaling, we do not completely rule out the possibility that $T_c = 0$ or that $T_c$ is finite but with no order below $T_c$. However, from our data, these possibilities seem less likely.

Current--Voltage Characteristics of Two--Dimensional Vortex Glass Models

We have performed Monte Carlo simulations to determine current--voltage characteristics of two different vortex glass models in two dimensions. The results confirm the conclusions of earlier studies that there is a transition at $T=0$. In addition we find that, as $T\to 0$, the linear resistance vanishes exponentially, and the current scale, $J_{nl}$, where non-linearities appear in the $I$--$V$ characteristics varies roughly as $T^3$, quite different from the predictions of conventional flux creep theory, $J_{nl} \sim T$. The results for the two models agree quite well with each other, and also agree fairly well with recent experiments on very thin films of YBCO.

Absence of a Phase Transition in a Three--Dimensional Vortex Glass Model with Screening

We study the gauge glass model for the vortex glass transition in type--II superconductors, including screening of the interaction between vortices. {}From the size dependence of the domain wall energy we find that, in two--dimensions, the transition is at $T=0$ both with and without screening but the exponents are different in the two cases. In three-dimensions, we find that screening destroys the finite temperature transition found earlier when screening was neglected.

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Antiferromagnet on the Kagome Lattice: High Temperature Expansion and Exact Diagonalisation Studies

For the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Kagomé lattice we calculate the high temperature series for the specific heat and the structure factor. A comparison of the series with exact diagonalisation studies shows that the specific heat has further structure at lower temperature in addition to a high temperature peak at $T\approx 2/3$. At $T=0.25$ the structure factor agrees quite well with results for the ground state of a finite cluster with 36 sites. At this temperature the structure factor is less than two times its $T=\infty$ value and depends only weakly on the wavevector $\bf q$, indicating the absence of magnetic order and a correlation length of less than one lattice spacing. The uniform susceptibility has a maximum at $T\approx 1/6$ and vanishes exponentially for lower temperatures.

Monte Carlo study of a vortex glass model

We describe results of Monte Carlo simulations on a model that seems to have the necessary ingredients to describe a disordered type-II superconductor in a magnetic field. We compute the free energy cost to twist the direction of the phase of the condensate and analyze the results by finite-size scaling. The results show convincingly that the model has different behavior as a function of dimension: in $d=4$ the model clearly has a finite transition temperature; $T_c$, while for $d=2$ only there is only a transition at $T=0$.

The superconductor-insulator transition in 2D dirty boson systems

Universal properties of the zero temperature superconductor-insulator transition in two-dimensional amorphous films are studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations of bosons in a disordered medium. We report results for both short-range and long-range Coulomb interactions for several different points in parameter space. In all cases we observe a transition from a superconducting phase to an insulating Bose glass phase. {}From finite-size scaling of our Monte Carlo data we determine the universal conductivity $σ^*$ and the critical exponents at the transition. The result $σ^* = (0.55 \pm 0.06) (2e)^2/h$ for bosons with long-range Coulomb interaction is roughly consistent with experiments reported so far. We also find $σ^* = (0.14 \pm 0.03) (2e)^2/h$ for bosons with short-range interactions.

Critical Exponents of the Three Dimensional Random Field Ising Model

The phase transition of the three--dimensional random field Ising model with a discrete ($\pm h$) field distribution is investigated by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Values of the critical exponents for the correlation length, specific heat, susceptibility, disconnected susceptibility and magnetization are determined simultaneously via finite size scaling. While the exponents for the magnetization and disconnected susceptibility are consistent with a first order transition, the specific heat appears to saturate indicating no latent heat. Sample to sample fluctuations of the susceptibilty are consistent with the droplet picture for the transition.
