Deployment characterization of a floatable tidal energy converter on a tidal channel, Ria Formosa, Portugal

This paper presents the results of a pilot experiment with an existing tidal energy converter (TEC), Evopod 1 kW floatable prototype, in a real test case scenario (Faro Channel, Ria Formosa, Portugal). A baseline marine geophysical, hydrodynamic and ecological study based on the experience collected on the test site is presented. The collected data was used to validate a hydro-morphodynamic model, allowing the selection of the installation area based on both operational and environmental constraints. Operational results related to the description of power generation capacity, energy capture area and proportion of energy flux are presented and discussed, including the failures occurring during the experimental setup. The data is now available to the scientific community and to TEC industry developers, enhancing the operational knowledge of TEC technology concerning efficiency, environmental effects, and interactions (i.e. device/environment). The results can be used by developers on the licensing process, on overcoming the commercial deployment barriers, on offering extra assurance and confidence to investors, who traditionally have seen environmental concerns as a barrier, and on providing the foundations whereupon similar deployment areas can be considered around the world for marine tidal energy extraction.

Décompte dans une conjecture de Lang sur les corps de fonctions : cas des courbes

Let $X$ be a genus $d$ curve with $d\geq 2$ defined over a global function field $K$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $p>2d+1$. Suppose $X$ non-isotrivial. Let $Γ$ be a sub-group of $J(K_s)$, where $J$ is the jacobian of $X$ and $K_s$ is a separable closure of $K$, verifying $Γ/p Γ$ finite. Then one shows that $X\cap Γ$ has finite cardinal and one provides an explicit upper bound. This generalizes a result of Buium and Voloch.

Search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying into four taus at LEP2

A search for the production and non-standard decay of a Higgs boson, h, into four taus through intermediate pseudoscalars, a, is conducted on 683 pb-1 of data collected by the ALEPH experiment at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. No excess of events above background is observed, and exclusion limits are placed on the combined production cross section times branching ratio, ξ^2 = σ(e+e- --> Zh)/σ_{SM}(e+e- --> Zh) x B(h --> aa)x B(a --> τ^+τ^-)^2. For mh < 107 GeV/c2 and 4 < ma < 10 GeV/c2, ξ^2 > 1 is excluded at the 95% confidence level.

Measuring Baryon Acoustic Oscillations along the line of sight with photometric redshifs: the PAU survey

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) provide a standard ruler of known physical length, making it a promising probe of the nature of dark energy. The detection of BAO requires measuring galaxy positions and redshifts. "Transversal" (angular distance) BAO measure the angular size of this scale, while "line-of-sight" (or "radial") BAO require precise redshifts, but provide a direct measurement of the Hubble parameter at different redshifts, a more sensitive probe of dark energy. The main goal of this paper is to show that a precision of sigma_z ~0.003(1 + z) is sufficient to measure BAO in the radial direction. This precision can be achieved for bright, red galaxies, by using a filter system comprising about 40 filters, each with a width of ~100 A, from ~ 4000 A to ~ 8000 A, supplemented by two broad-band filters. We describe a practical implementation, a new galaxy survey, PAU, to be carried out with a telescope/camera combination with an etendue of about 20 m^2deg^2, and covering 8000 sq. deg. in the sky in four years. We expect to measure positions and redshifts for over 14 million red, early-type galaxies with L > L* and i_AB < 22.5 in the interval 0.1 < z < 0.9, with sigma_z < 0.003(1 + z). This population has a number density n > 10^-3 Mpc^-3 h^3 within the 9 (Gpc/h)^3 volume of the survey, ensuring that the error in the determination of the BAO scale is not limited by shot-noise. By itself, such a survey will deliver precisions of order 5% in the dark-energy equation of state parameter w, if assumed constant, and can determine its time derivative when combined with future CMB measurements. In addition, PAU will yield high-quality redshift and low-resolution spectroscopy for hundreds of millions of other galaxies.
