SN 2016coi/ASASSN-16fp: An example of residual helium in a type Ic supernova?

The optical observations of Ic-4 supernova (SN) 2016coi/ASASSN-16fp, from $\sim 2$ to $\sim450$ days after explosion, are presented along with analysis of its physical properties. The SN shows the broad lines associated with SNe Ic-3/4 but with a key difference. The early spectra display a strong absorption feature at $\sim 5400$ Å which is not seen in other SNe~Ic-3/4 at this epoch. This feature has been attributed to He I in the literature. Spectral modelling of the SN in the early photospheric phase suggests the presence of residual He in a C/O dominated shell. However, the behaviour of the He I lines are unusual when compared with He-rich SNe, showing relatively low velocities and weakening rather than strengthening over time. The SN is found to rise to peak $\sim 16$ d after core-collapse reaching a bolometric luminosity of Lp $\sim 3\times10^{42}$ \ergs. Spectral models, including the nebular epoch, show that the SN ejected $2.5-4$ \msun\ of material, with $\sim 1.5$ \msun\ below 5000 \kms, and with a kinetic energy of $(4.5-7)\times10^{51}$ erg. The explosion synthesised $\sim 0.14$ \msun\ of 56Ni. There are significant uncertainties in E(B-V)host and the distance however, which will affect Lp and MNi. SN 2016coi exploded in a host similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and away from star-forming regions. The properties of the SN and the host-galaxy suggest that the progenitor had $M_\mathrm{ZAMS}$ of $23-28$ \msun\ and was stripped almost entirely down to its C/O core at explosion.

Deep-inelastic multinucleon transfer processes in the $^{16}$O+$^{27}$Al reaction

The reaction mechanism of deep-inelastic multinucleon transfer processes in the $^{16}$O+$^{27}$Al reaction at an incident $^{16}$O energy ($E_{\rm lab}=134$ MeV) substantially above the Coulomb barrier has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Elastic-scattering angular distribution, total kinetic energy loss spectra and angular distributions for various transfer channels have been measured. The $Q$-value- and angle-integrated isotope production cross sections have been deduced. To obtain deeper insight into the underlying reaction mechanism, we have carried out a detailed analysis based on the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory. A recently developed method, TDHF+GEMINI, has been applied to evaluate production cross sections for secondary products. From a comparison between the experimental and theoretical cross sections, we find that the theory qualitatively reproduces the experimental data. Significant effects of secondary light-particle emissions are demonstrated. Possible interplay between fusion-fission, deep-inelastic, multinucleon transfer and particle evaporation processes are discussed.

Quasi-Static Internal Magnetic Field Detected in the Pseudogap Phase of Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ by $μ$SR

We report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements of optimally-doped and overdoped Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) single crystals that reveal the presence of a weak temperature-dependent quasi-static internal magnetic field of electronic origin in the superconducting (SC) and pseudogap (PG) phases. In both samples the internal magnetic field persists up to 160~K, but muon diffusion prevents following the evolution of the field to higher temperatures. We consider the evidence from our measurments in support of PG order parameter candidates, namely, electronic loop currents and magnetoelectric quadrupoles.

Quantum spin fluctuations in the bulk insulating state of pure and Fe-doped SmB6

The intermediate-valence compound SmB6 is a well-known Kondo insulator, in which hybridization of itinerant 5d electrons with localized 4f electrons leads to a transition from metallic to insulating behavior at low temperatures. Recent studies suggest that SmB6 is a topological insulator, with topological metallic surface states emerging from a fully insulating hybridized bulk band structure. Here we locally probe the bulk magnetic properties of pure and 0.5 % Fe-doped SmB6 by muon spin rotation/relaxation methods. Below 6 K the Fe impurity induces simultaneous changes in the bulk local magnetism and the electrical conductivity. In the low-temperature insulating bulk state we observe a temperature-independent dynamic relaxation rate indicative of low-lying magnetic excitations driven primarily by quantum fluctuations.

Clustering of non-ergodic eigenstates in quantum spin glasses

The two primary categories for eigenstate phases of matter at finite temperature are many-body localization (MBL) and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). We show that in the paradigmatic quantum $p$-spin models of spin-glass theory, eigenstates violate ETH yet are not MBL either. A mobility edge, which we locate to leading order in $1/p$ using the forward-scattering approximation and replica techniques, separates the non-ergodic phase at small transverse field from an ergodic phase at large transverse field. The non-ergodic phase is also bounded from above in temperature, by a transition in configuration-space statistics reminiscent of the clustering transition in spin-glass theory. We show that the non-ergodic eigenstates are organized in clusters which exhibit distinct magnetization patterns, as characterized by an eigenstate variant of the Edwards-Anderson order parameter.

Investigation of potential fluctuating intra-unit cell magnetic order in cuprates by muon spin relaxation

We report low temperature muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements of the high-transition-temperature (Tc) cuprate superconductors Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CaCu2O{8+δ} and YBa2Cu3O6.57, aimed at detecting the mysterious intra-unit cell (IUC) magnetic order that has been observed by spin polarized neutron scattering in the pseudogap phase of four different cuprate families. A lack of confirmation by local magnetic probe methods has raised the possibility that the magnetic order fluctuates slowly enough to appear static on the time scale of neutron scattering, but too fast to affect $μ$SR or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals. The IUC magnetic order has been linked to a theoretical model for the cuprates, which predicts a long-range ordered phase of electron-current loop order that terminates at a quantum crictical point (QCP). Our study suggests that lowering the temperature to T ~ 25 mK and moving far below the purported QCP does not cause enough of a slowing down of fluctuations for the IUC magnetic order to become detectable on the time scale of muSR. Our measurements place narrow limits on the fluctuation rate of this unidentified magnetic order.

The Kepler Cepheid V1154 Cyg revisited: light curve modulation and detection of granulation

We present a detailed analysis of the bright Cepheid-type variable star V1154 Cygni using 4 years of continuous observations by the Kepler space telescope. We detected 28 frequencies using standard Fourier transform method. We identified modulation of the main pulsation frequency and its harmonics with a period of ~159 d. This modulation is also present in the Fourier parameters of the light curve and the O-C diagram. We detected another modulation with a period of about 1160 d. The star also shows significant power in the low-frequency region that we identified as granulation noise. The effective timescale of the granulation agrees with the extrapolated scalings of red giant stars. Non-detection of solar-like oscillations indicates that the pulsation inhibits other oscillations. We obtained new radial velocity observations which are in a perfect agreement with previous years data, suggesting that there is no high mass star companion of V1154 Cygni. Finally, we discuss the possible origin of the detected frequency modulations.

Electrodynamic response of type II Weyl semimetals

Weyl fermions play a major role in quantum field theory but have been quite elusive as fundamental particles. Materials based on quasi two-dimensional bismuth layers were recently designed and provide an arena for the study of the interplay between anisotropic Dirac fermions, magnetism and structural changes, allowing the formation of Weyl fermions in condensed matter. Here, we perform an optical investigation of YbMnBi$_2$, a representative type II Weyl semimetal, and contrast its excitation spectrum with the optical response of the more conventional semimetal EuMnBi$_2$. Our comparative study allows us disentangling the optical fingerprints of type II Weyl fermions, but also challenge the present theoretical understanding of their electrodynamic response.

Activity of 50 Long-Period Comets Beyond 5.2 AU

Remote investigations of the ancient solar system matter has been traditionally carried out through the observations of long-period (LP) comets that are less affected by solar irradiation than the short-period counterparts orbiting much closer to the Sun. Here we summarize the results of our decade-long survey of the distant activity of LP comets. We found that the most important separation in the dataset is based on the dynamical nature of the objects. Dynamically new comets are characterized by a higher level of activity on average: the most active new comets in our sample can be characterized by afrho values >3--4 higher than that of our most active returning comets. New comets develop more symmetric comae, suggesting a generally isotropic outflow. Contrary to this, the coma of recurrent comets can be less symmetrical, ocassionally exhibiting negative slope parameters, suggesting sudden variations in matter production. The morphological appearance of the observed comets is rather diverse. A surprisingly large fraction of the comets have long, teniouos tails, but the presence of impressive tails does not show a clear correlation with the brightness of the comets.

Many-body localization beyond eigenstates in all dimensions

Isolated quantum systems with quenched randomness exhibit many-body localization (MBL), wherein they do not reach local thermal equilibrium even when highly excited above their ground states. It is widely believed that individual eigenstates capture this breakdown of thermalization at finite size. We show that this belief is false in general and that a MBL system can exhibit the eigenstate properties of a thermalizing system. We propose that localized approximately conserved operators (l$^*$-bits) underlie localization in such systems. In dimensions $d>1$, we further argue that the existing MBL phenomenology is unstable to boundary effects and gives way to l$^*$-bits. Physical consequences of l$^*$-bits include the possibility of an eigenstate phase transition within the MBL phase unrelated to the dynamical transition in $d=1$ and thermal eigenstates at all parameters in $d>1$. Near-term experiments in ultra-cold atomic systems and numerics can probe the dynamics generated by boundary layers and emergence of l$^*$-bits.

Extensive Spectroscopy and Photometry of the Type IIP Supernova 2013ej

We present extensive optical ($UBVRI$, $g'r'i'z'$, and open CCD) and near-infrared ($ZYJH$) photometry for the very nearby Type IIP SN ~2013ej extending from +1 to +461 days after shock breakout, estimated to be MJD $56496.9\pm0.3$. Substantial time series ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy obtained from +8 to +135 days are also presented. Considering well-observed SNe IIP from the literature, we derive $UBVRIJHK$ bolometric calibrations from $UBVRI$ and unfiltered measurements that potentially reach 2\% precision with a $B-V$ color-dependent correction. We observe moderately strong Si II $\lambda6355$ as early as +8 days. The photospheric velocity ($v_{\rm ph}$) is determined by modeling the spectra in the vicinity of Fe II $\lambda5169$ whenever observed, and interpolating at photometric epochs based on a semianalytic method. This gives $v_{\rm ph} = 4500\pm500$ km s$^{-1}$ at +50 days. We also observe spectral homogeneity of ultraviolet spectra at +10--12 days for SNe IIP, while variations are evident a week after explosion. Using the expanding photosphere method, from combined analysis of SN 2013ej and SN 2002ap, we estimate the distance to the host galaxy to be $9.0_{-0.6}^{+0.4}$ Mpc, consistent with distance estimates from other methods. Photometric and spectroscopic analysis during the plateau phase, which we estimated to be $94\pm7$ days long, yields an explosion energy of $0.9\pm0.3\times10^{51}$ ergs, a final pre-explosion progenitor mass of $15.2\pm4.2$~M$_\odot$ and a radius of $250\pm70$~R$_\odot$. We observe a broken exponential profile beyond +120 days, with a break point at +$183\pm16$ days. Measurements beyond this break time yield a $^{56}$Ni mass of $0.013\pm0.001$~M$_\odot$.

Tuning the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in $R$CoPO by means of $R$ substitution: a ferromagnetic resonance study

We report on broad-band electron spin resonance measurements performed within the itinerant ferromagnetic phase of $R$CoPO ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd and Sm). We reveal that the $R$ substitution is highly effective in gradually introducing a sizeable easy-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy within the Co sublattice. We explain our results in terms of a subtle interplay of structural effects and of indirect interactions between the $f$ and $d$ orbitals from $R$ and Co, respectively.

The many-body localized phase of the quantum random energy model

The random energy model (REM) provides a solvable mean-field description of the equilibrium spin glass transition. Its quantum sibling (the QREM), obtained by adding a transverse field to the REM, has similar properties and shows a spin glass phase for sufficiently small transverse field and temperature. In a recent work, some of us have shown that the QREM further exhibits a many-body localization - delocalization (MBLD) transition when viewed as a closed quantum system, evolving according to the quantum dynamics. This phase encloses the familiar equilibrium spin-glass phase. In this paper we study in detail the MBLD transition within the forward-scattering approximation and replica techniques. The predictions for the transition line are in good agreement with the exact diagonalization numerics. We also observe that the structure of the eigenstates at the MBLD critical point changes continuously with the energy density, raising the possibility of a family of critical theories for the MBLD transition.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling in spin filter ferromagnetic Josephson junctions

The interfacial coupling of two materials with different ordered phases, such as a superconductor (S) and a ferromagnet (F) is driving new fundamental physics and innovative applications. For example, the creation of spin-filter Josephson junctions and the demonstration of triplet supercurrents have suggested the potential of a dissipationless version of spintronics based on unconventional superconductivity. Here we demonstrate evidence for active quantum applications of S-F-S junctions, through the observation of macroscopic quantum tunneling in Josephson junctions with GdN ferromagnetic insulator barriers. We prove a clear transition from thermal to quantum regime at a crossover temperature of about 100 mK at zero magnetic field in junctions which demonstrate a clear signature of unconventional superconductivity. Following previous demonstration of passive S-F-S phase shifters in a phase qubit, our result paves the way to the active use of spin filter Josephson systems in quantum hybrid circuits.

Common effect of chemical and external pressures on the magnetic properties of $R$CoPO ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd, Sm). II

The direct correspondence between Co band ferromagnetism and structural parameters is investigated in the pnictide oxides $R$CoPO for different rare-earth ions ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy and {\it ab-initio} calculations, complementing our results published previously [G. Prando {\it et al.}, {\it Phys. Rev. B} {\bf 87}, 064401 (2013)]. Both the transition temperature to the ferromagnetic phase $T_{_{\textrm{C}}}$ and the volume of the crystallographic unit cell $V$ are found to be conveniently tuned by the $R$ ionic radius and/or external pressure. A linear correlation between $T_{_{\textrm{C}}}$ and $V$ is reported and {\it ab-initio} calculations unambiguously demonstrate a full equivalence of chemical and external pressures. As such, $R$ ions are shown to be influencing the ferromagnetic phase only via the induced structural shrinkage without involving any active role from the electronic $f$ degrees of freedom, which are only giving a sizeable magnetic contribution at much lower temperatures.

A new sdO+dM binary with extreme eclipses and reflection effect

We report the discovery of a new totally-eclipsing binary (RA=06:40:29.11; Dec=+38:56:52.2; J=2000.0; Rmax=17.2 mag) with an sdO primary and a strongly irradiated red dwarf companion. It has an orbital period of Porb=0.187284394(11) d and an optical eclipse depth in excess of 5 magnitudes. We obtained two low-resolution classification spectra with GTC/OSIRIS and ten medium-resolution spectra with WHT/ISIS to constrain the properties of the binary members. The spectra are dominated by H Balmer and He II absorption lines from the sdO star, and phase-dependent emission lines from the irradiated companion. A combined spectroscopic and light curve analysis implies a hot subdwarf temperature of Teff(spec) = 55 000 +/- 3000K, surface gravity of log g(phot) = 6.2 +/- 0.04 (cgs) and a He abundance of log(nHe/nH) = -2.24 +/- 0.40. The hot sdO star irradiates the red-dwarf companion, heating its substellar point to about 22 500K. Surface parameters for the companion are difficult to constrain from the currently available data: the most remarkable features are the strong H Balmer and C II-III lines in emission. Radial velocity estimates are consistent with the sdO+dM classification. The photometric data do not show any indication of sdO pulsations with amplitudes greater than 7mmag, and Halpha-filter images do not provide evidence of the presence of a planetary nebula associated with the sdO star.

Many-body mobility edge in a mean-field quantum spin glass

The quantum random energy model provides a mean-field description of the equilibrium spin glass transition. We show that it further exhibits a many-body localization - delocalization (MBLD) transition when viewed as a closed quantum system. The mean-field structure of the model allows an analytically tractable description of the MBLD transition using the forward-scattering approximation and replica techniques. The predictions are in good agreement with the numerics. The MBLD lies at energy density significantly above the equilibrium spin glass transition, indicating that the closed system dynamics freezes well outside of the traditional glass phase. We also observe that the structure of the eigenstates at the MBLD critical point changes continuously with the energy density, raising the possibility of a family of critical theories for the MBLD transition.

Effect of external pressure on the magnetic properties of $R$CoAsO ($R$ = La, Pr, Sm): a $μ$SR study

We report on a detailed investigation of the itinerant ferromagnets LaCoAsO, PrCoAsO and SmCoAsO performed by means of muon spin spectroscopy upon the application of external hydrostatic pressures $p$ up to $2.4$ GPa. These materials are shown to be magnetically hard in view of the weak dependence of both critical temperatures $T_{C}$ and internal fields at the muon site on $p$. In the cases $R$ = La and Sm, the behaviour of the internal field is substantially unaltered up to $p = 2.4$ GPa. A much richer phenomenology is detected in PrCoAsO instead, possibly associated with a strong $p$ dependence of the statistical population of the two different crystallographic sites for the muon. Surprisingly, results are notably different from what is observed in the case of the isostructural compounds $R$CoPO, where the full As/P substitution is already inducing a strong chemical pressure within the lattice but $p$ is still very effective in further affecting the magnetic properties.
