Comparing two different descriptions of the I-V characteristic of graphene: theory and experiment

The formalism of the nonperturbative description of transport phenomena in graphene on the framework of the quantum kinetic equation for the Schwinger-like process is compared with the description on the basis of Zener-Klein tunneling. The regime of ballistic conductivity in a constant electric field is considered. In the latter case the interaction of carriers with electric field is described in terms of the spatial dependence of their potential energy (x-representation). The presented kinetic formalism uses an alternative method of describing the interaction with a field through the introduction of a quasimomentum $P=p-(e/c)A(t)$ where $A(t)$ is the vector potential (t-representation). Both approaches should lead to the same physical characteristics of the described process. The measurement of the current in experiments is realized in static conditions determined by the potential difference between the electrodes and the distance between them. These parameters are native for the x-representation. On the contrary, in the approach based on the t-representation it is necessary to consider the situation in dynamics and introduce the effective lifetime of the generated carriers. In the ballistic regime this time depends on the distance between the electrodes. We give a detailed comparison of these two descriptions of the current and demonstrate good coincidence with the experimental data of the alternative approach based on the t-representation. It provides a reliable foundation for the application of nonperturbative methods adopted from strong field QED, that allows to include in the consideration more general models of the field (arbitrary polarization and time dependence) and to extend the scope of the theory.

Particle Production in Strong Time-dependent Fields

In these lecture notes we give an introduction to the kinetic equation approach to pair production form the vacuum in strong, time-dependent external fields (dynamical Schwinger process). We first give a derivation of the kinetic equation with the source term for the case of fermions starting from the Dirac equation and for bosons from the Klein-Gordon equation. In a second part we discuss the application of the approach to the situation of external field pulses as single-sheeted functions of time (like the Sauter-pulse) and as multi- sheeted functions approximating the situation in the focal point of counter-propagating laser beams. Special emphasis is on the discussion of the time evolution of the system that exhibits the characteristics of a field-induced phase transition for which we discuss the behaviour of the entropy and particle density of the system. We give an outlook to applications of the approach in describing particle production in strong fields formed in particle and nuclear collisions.

Dynamical Schwinger effect: Properties of the $e^{+}e^{-}$ plasma created from vacuum in strong laser fields

We study the dynamical Schwinger effect in the vacuum excitation of the electron-positron plasma under action of a "laser pulse" of the simplest configuration: a linearly polarized, time-dependent and spatially homogeneous electric field. Methodical basis of this investigation is the kinetic equation which is an exact consequence of the basic equations of motion of QED in the considered field model. In the present work we investigate some features of the residual electron-positron plasma and the transient process of its formation.

The Multicolor Panoramic Photometer-Polarimeter with high time resolution based on the PSD

Multicolor Panoramic Photometer-Polarimeter (MPPP) with a time resolution of 1 microsecond has been built based on a PSD and used at the 6-meter telescope in SAO (Russia). The device allows registration of the photon fluxes in four photometric bands simultaneously and finding values of 3 Stokes parameters. MPPP consists of Position-Sensitive Detector (PSD), acquisition MANIA-system, polarization unit and a set of dichroic filters. MPPP gives a possibility of detecting photons in 2 pupils with a size of 10 - 15 arc sec centered on the object and comparison star positions simultaneously. The first half of the object photon flux passes through the phase rotating plate and polarizer, and the second one through the polarizer alone. MPPP registers in each of the 4 filters four images of the object with different orientations of polarization plane and one image of a comparison star. It allows measuring instantaneous Stokes parameters. The main astrophysical problems to be solved with MPPP are as follows: investigation of optical pulsars; study of GRB phenomenon in the optical range; searching for single black holes; study of fast variability of X-ray binaries. As an illustration of MPPP use, the results of observations at the 6-meter telescope of Crab pulsar and soft gamma repeater are presented.
