Topology in 2D CP**(N-1) models on the lattice: a critical comparison of different cooling techniques

Two-dimensional CP**(N-1) models are used to compare the behavior of different cooling techniques on the lattice. Cooling is one of the most frequently used tools to study on the lattice the topological properties of the vacuum of a field theory. We show that different cooling methods behave in an equivalent way. To see this we apply the cooling methods on classical instantonic configurations and on configurations of the thermal equilibrium ensemble. We also calculate the topological susceptibility by using the cooling technique.

Analytic Model of a Regge Trajectory in the Space-like and Time-like Regions

A model for a Regge trajectory compatible with the threshold behavior required by unitarity and asymptotics in agreement with Mandelstam analyticity is analyzed and confronted with the experimental data on the spectrum of the $ρ$ trajectory as well as those on the $π^- p\to π^0 n$ charge-exchange reaction. The fitted trajectory deviates considerably from a linear one both in the space-like and time-like regions, matching nicely between the two.

The Gluon Impact Factors

We calculate in the next-to-leading approximation the non-forward gluon impact factors for arbitrary color state in the $t$-channel. In the case of the octet state we check the so-called "second bootstrap condition" for the gluon Reggeization in QCD, using the integral representation for the impact factors. The condition is fulfilled in the general case of an arbitrary space-time dimension and massive quark flavors for both helicity conserving and non-conserving parts.

The Quark Impact Factors

We calculate in the next-to-leading approximation the non-forward quark impact factors for both singlet and octet color representation in the $t$-channel. The integral representation of the octet impact factor in the general case of arbitrary space-time dimension and massive quark flavors is used to check the so-called "second bootstrap condition" for the gluon Reggeization at the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation in perturbative QCD. We find that it is satisfied for both helicity conserving and non-conserving parts. The integrations are then performed for the explicit calculation of the impact factors in the massless quark case.

Triple Pomeron and Proton Diffraction Dissociation

We consider proton diffraction dissociation in the dipole Pomeron model, where the Pomeron is represented by a double pole in the $J-$plane, and show that unitarity can be satisfied without decoupling of the triple Pomeron vertex. Differential and total diffractive cross sections for the reaction $\bar{p}+p \to \bar{p}+X$ are analyzed and reproduced in this model.

The quark part of the non-forward BFKL kernel and the ``bootstrap'' for the gluon Reggeization

We calculate the quark part of the kernel of the generalized non-forward BFKL equation at non-zero momentum transfer $t$ in the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. Along with the quark contribution to the gluon Regge trajectory, this part includes pieces coming from the quark-antiquark production and from the quark contribution to the radiative corrections in one-gluon production in the Reggeon-Reggeon collisions. The results obtained can be used for an arbitrary representation of the colour group in the $t-$channel. Using the results for the adjoint representation, we demonstrate explicitly the fulfillment of the ``bootstrap'' condition for the gluon Reggeization in the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation in the part concerning the quark contribution.

Instanton classical solutions of SU(3) fixed point actions on open lattices

We construct instanton-like classical solutions of the fixed point action of a suitable renormalization group transformation for the SU(3) lattice gauge theory. The problem of the non-existence of one-instantons on a lattice with periodic boundary conditions is circumvented by working on open lattices. We consider instanton solutions for values of the size (0.6-1.9 in lattice units) which are relevant when studying the SU(3) topology on coarse lattices using fixed point actions. We show how these instanton configurations on open lattices can be taken into account when determining a few-couplings parametrization of the fixed point action.

Fixed point actions and on-shell tree-level Symanzik improvement

In this paper it is argued that the properties of the fixed point action of a renormalization group transformation can be used to implement the on-shell tree-level Symanzik improvement of lattice actions to any given order in the expansion in the lattice spacing, in a way which does not involve any perturbative calculations. In particular, a well-known technique for the lowest order improvement of SU(N) lattice gauge theories is revisited from the point of view of fixed point actions, which allows to shed light on some subtle points.

SU(3) surface tension from the lattice with the fixed point action

The surface tension at the deconfinement transition of SU(3) is determined with a parametrized version of the fixed point action of a renormalization group transformation on lattices with temporal extent $N_τ=3$ and 4 and spatial extent $N_σ/N_τ=3$ and 4. A considerable cut-off dependence can be seen in comparison with earlier determinations from tree level Symanzik and tadpole improved actions.

Fixed point actions in SU(3) gauge theory: surface tension and topology

This work is organized in two independent parts. In the first part are presented some results concerning the surface tension in SU(3) obtained with a parametrized fixed point action. In the second part, a new, approximately scale-invariant, parametrized fixed point action is proposed which is suitable to study the topology in SU(3).

Renormalization group flow and fixed point of the lattice topological charge in the 2-d O(3) sigma-model

We study the renormalization group evolution up to the fixed point of the lattice topological susceptibility in the 2-d O(3) non-linear sigma-model. We start with a discretization of the continuum topological charge by a local charge density, polynomial in the lattice fields. Among the different choices we propose also a Symanzik--improved lattice topological charge. We check step by step in the renormalization group iteration the progressive dumping of quantum fluctuations, which are responsible for the additive and multiplicative renormalizations of the lattice topological susceptibility with respect to the continuum definition. We find that already after three iterations these renormalizations are negligible and an excellent approximation of the fixed point is achieved. We also check by an explicit calculation that the assumption of slowly varying fields in iterating the renormalization group does not lead to a good approximation of the fixed point charge operator.

SU(3) Thermodynamics on Small Lattices

The free energy density of the SU(3) gauge theory at temperatures T/T_c = 4/3, 3/2 and 2 is calculated on lattices with temporal extent as small as N_t = 2, 3 and spatial extent N_s = 4 N_t using parametrized fixed point actions. Although cut-off effects are seen, they are hugely suppressed with respect to Wilson and Symanzik-improved actions and at N_t = 3 there is already a good agreement with the continuum limit as extrapolated from the results with the Wilson action at N_t = 6 and 8.

Scaling and topology in the 2-d O(3) $σ$-model on the lattice with the fixed point action

We study scaling properties and topological aspects of the 2--d O(3) non--linear $σ$--model on the lattice with the parametrized fixed point action recently proposed by P.~Hasenfratz and F.~Niedermayer. The behavior of the mass gap confirms the good properties of scaling of the fixed point action. Concerning the topology, lattice classical solutions are proved to be very stable under local minimization of the action; this outcome ensures the reliability of the cooling method for the computation of the topological susceptibility, which indeed reproduces the results of the field theoretical approach. Disagreement is instead observed with a different approach in which the fixed point topological charge operator is used: we argue that the discrepancy is related to the ultraviolet dominated nature of the model.

The absence of cut--off effects for the fixed point action in 1--loop perturbation theory

In order to support the formal renormalization group arguments that the fixed point action of an asymptotically free model gives cut--off independent physical predictions in 1--loop perturbation theory, we calculate the finite volume mass--gap $m(L)$ in the non--linear $σ$--model. No cut--off effect of the type $g^4\left(a/L\right)^n$ is seen for any $n$. The results are compared with those of the standard and tree level improved Symanzik actions.

Heating and small-size instantons in the $O(3) \:σ$ model on the lattice

We study the role of small-size instantons in the determination of the topological susceptibility of the 2-d $O(3) \: σ$ model on the lattice. In particular, we analyze how they affect the non-perturbative determination, by Monte Carlo techniques, of the renormalizations on the lattice. As a result, we obtain a high-precision non-perturbative determination of the mixing with the unity operator, finding good agreement with perturbative computations. We also obtain the size distribution of instantons in the physical vacuum up to very small values of the size in physical units, without observing any ultraviolet cut-off. Moreover, we show by analytical calculation that the mixing of the topological susceptibility with the action density is a negligible part of the whole non-perturbative signal.
