Fracton and Non-Lorentzian Particle Duality: Gauge Field Couplings and Geometric Implications

Fractons, characterized by restricted mobility and governed by higher-moment conservation laws, represent a novel phase of matter with deep connections to tensor gauge theories and emergent gravity. This work systematically explores the duality between fractons and non-Lorentzian particles-Carroll and Galilean-within electromagnetic (EM) fields. By constructing canonical actions for fractons in rank-2 gauge fields, we derive their equations of motion and demonstrate a new set of dualities between fractons and non-Lorentzian particles in gauge fields. The algebraic underpinnings of these dualities are clarified through symmetry analyses, revealing structural parallels between the fracton and Carroll/Galilean algebras. Furthermore, by gauging the fracton algebra, we develop a framework for coupling fracton gauge fields and background geometry, linking them to non-Lorentzian spacetimes and deriving the corresponding constraint on geometry. These results unify fracton dynamics with non-relativistic and ultra-relativistic limits of physics, offering insights into emergent gravity and exotic condensed matter systems.

Freelance Holography, Part I: Setting Boundary Conditions Free in Gauge/Gravity Correspondence

We explore AdS/CFT duality in the large $N$ limit, where the duality reduces to gauge/gravity correspondence, from the viewpoint of covariant phase space formalism (CPSF). In particular, we elucidate the role of the $W, Y$, and $Z$ freedoms (also known as ambiguities) in the CPSF and their meaning in the gauge/gravity correspondence. We show that $W$-freedom is associated with the choice of boundary conditions and slicing of solution space in the gravity side, which has been related to deformations by multi-trace operators in the gauge theory side. The gauge/gravity correspondence implies the equivalence of on-shell symplectic potentials on both sides, thereby the $Y$-freedom of the gravity side specifies the on-shell symplectic form of the gauge theory side. The $Z$-freedom, which determines the corner Lagrangian on the gravity side, establishes the boundary conditions and choice of slicing in the boundary theory and its solution space. We utilize these results to systematically formulate freelance holography in which boundary conditions of the fields on the gravity side are chosen freely and are not limited to Dirichlet boundary conditions, and discuss some examples with different boundary conditions.

Freelance Holography, Part II: Moving Boundary in Gauge/Gravity Correspondence

We continue developing the freelance holography program, formulating gauge/gravity correspondence where the gravity side is formulated on a space bounded by a generic timelike codimension-one surface inside AdS and arbitrary boundary conditions are imposed on the gravity fields on the surface. Our analysis is performed within the Covariant Phase Space Formalism (CPSF). We discuss how a given boundary condition on the bulk fields on a generic boundary evolves as we move the boundary to another boundary inside AdS and work out how this evolution is encoded in deformations of the holographic boundary theory. Our analyses here extend the extensively studied T$\bar{\text{T}}$-deformation by relaxing the boundary conditions at asymptotic AdS or at the cutoff surface to be any arbitrary one (besides Dirichlet). We discuss some of the implications of our general freelance holography setting.

Photon rings in the metamaterial analog of a gravitomagnetic monopole

After studying null geodesics in the equatorial plane in NUT spacetime, we show that there are unstable photon rings in this plane. Next we transform the metric of this plane to the isotropic coordinates and introduce its equivalent two-parameter index of refraction. Utilizing the analog gravity concepts, we assign this index of refraction to a metamaterial analog of this plane, and by ray-tracing simulation find its photon rings. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to the charged NUT spacetime and employ wave optics to numerically solve Maxwell's equations for electromagnetic waves within an inhomogeneous medium assigned with this spacetime's three-parameter index of refraction. We investigate the optical properties of such metamaterial analogs for designing enhanced and fine-tuned optical devices.

Heisenberg Soft Hair on Robinson-Trautman Spacetimes

We study 4 dimensional $(4d$) gravitational waves (GWs) with compact wavefronts, generalizing Robinson-Trautman (RT) solutions in Einstein gravity with an arbitrary cosmological constant. We construct the most general solution of the GWs in the presence of a causal, timelike, or null boundary when the usual tensor modes are turned off. Our solution space besides the shape and topology of the wavefront which is a generic compact, smooth, and orientable $2d$ surface $Σ$, is specified by a vector over $Σ$ satisfying the conformal Killing equation and two scalars that are arbitrary functions over the causal boundary, the boundary modes (soft hair). We work out the symplectic form over the solution space using covariant phase space formalism and analyze the boundary symmetries and charges. The algebra of surface charges is a Heisenberg algebra. Only the overall size of the compact wavefront and not the details of its shape appears in the boundary symplectic form and is canonical conjugate to the overall mass of the GW. Hence, the information about the shape of the wavefront can't be probed by the boundary observer. We construct a boundary energy-momentum tensor and a boundary current, whose conservation yields the RT equation for both asymptotically AdS and flat spacetimes. The latter provides a hydrodynamic description for our RT solutions.

White Paper and Roadmap for Quantum Gravity Phenomenology in the Multi-Messenger Era

The unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity has long been elusive. Only recently have empirical predictions of various possible theories of quantum gravity been put to test, where a clear signal of quantum properties of gravity is still missing. The dawn of multi-messenger high-energy astrophysics has been tremendously beneficial, as it allows us to study particles with much higher energies and travelling much longer distances than possible in terrestrial experiments, but more progress is needed on several fronts. A thorough appraisal of current strategies and experimental frameworks, regarding quantum gravity phenomenology, is provided here. Our aim is twofold: a description of tentative multimessenger explorations, plus a focus on future detection experiments. As the outlook of the network of researchers that formed through the COST Action CA18108 ``Quantum gravity phenomenology in the multi-messenger approach (QG-MM)'', in this work we give an overview of the desiderata that future theoretical frameworks, observational facilities, and data-sharing policies should satisfy in order to advance the cause of quantum gravity phenomenology.

Carrollian Structure of the Null Boundary Solution Space

We study pure $D$ dimensional Einstein gravity in spacetimes with a generic null boundary. We focus on the symplectic form of the solution phase space which comprises a $2D$ dimensional boundary part and a $2(D(D-3)/2+1)$ dimensional bulk part. The symplectic form is the sum of the bulk and boundary parts, obtained through integration over a codimension 1 surface (null boundary) and a codimension 2 spatial section of it, respectively. Notably, while the total symplectic form is a closed 2-form over the solution phase space, neither the boundary nor the bulk symplectic forms are closed due to the symplectic flux of the bulk modes passing through the boundary. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the $D(D-3)/2+1$ dimensional Lagrangian submanifold of the bulk part of the solution phase space has a Carrollian structure, with the metric on the $D(D-3)/2$ dimensional part being the Wheeler-DeWitt metric, and the Carrollian kernel vector corresponding to the outgoing Robinson-Trautman gravitational wave solution.

Hydro & Thermo Dynamics at Causal Boundaries, Examples in 3d Gravity

We study 3-dimensional gravity on a spacetime bounded by a generic 2-dimensional causal surface. We review the solution phase space specified by 4 generic functions over the causal boundary, construct the symplectic form over the solution space and the 4 boundary charges and their algebra. The boundary charges label boundary degrees of freedom. Three of these charges extend and generalize the Brown-York charges to the generic causal boundary, are canonical conjugates of boundary metric components and naturally give rise to a fluid description at the causal boundary. Moreover, we show that the boundary charges besides the causal boundary hydrodynamic description, also admit a thermodynamic description with a natural (geometric) causal boundary temperature and angular velocity. When the causal boundary is the asymptotic boundary of the 3d AdS or flat space, the hydrodynamic description respectively recovers an extension of the known conformal or conformal-Carrollian asymptotic hydrodynamics. When the causal boundary is a generic null surface, we recover the null surface thermodynamics of [1] which is an extension of the usual black hole thermodynamics description.

Metamaterial analog of a black hole shadow: An exact ray-tracing simulation based on the spacetime index of refraction

In this letter first we show that the equation of null geodesics in spherically symmetric spacetimes in isotropic coordinates is identical to the equation of light ray trajectories in isotropic media in flat spacetime. Based on this analogy we introduce an exact simulation of the light ray trajectories both in these spacetimes and in their metamaterial analogs in terms of the spacetime index of refraction. As unstable light trajectories, the photon spheres form in these metamaterial analogs at {\it exactly} the same radial distances as expected from the corresponding black hole geometries. Using the same ray-tracing simulation we find the analog of a simple black hole shadow formed by the metamaterial analog of a Schwarzschild black hole, eclipsing a line of light sources near its analog horizon.

Papapetrou field as the gravitoelectromagnetic field tensor in stationary spacetimes

Introducing the well known Papapetrou field as the gravitoelectromagnetic field tensor, we express the Maxwell-type part of the 3-dimensional quasi-Maxwell form of the {\it vacuum} Einstein field equations in terms of differential forms, analogous to their electromagnetic counterparts in curved spacetimes. Using the same formalism we introduce the junction conditions on non-null hypersurfaces in terms of the introduced gravitoelectromagnetic 4-vector fields and apply them to the case of the Van Stockum interior and exterior solutions.

Gaussian Curvature and Global effects : gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect revisited

Using the Gauss-Bonnet formula, integral of the Gaussian curvature over a 2-surface enclosed by a curve in the asymptotically flat region of a static spacetime was found to be a measure of a gravitational analogue of Aharonov-Bohm effect by Ford and Vilenkin in the linearized regime. Employing the 1+3 formulation of spacetime decomposition we study the same effect in the context of full Einstein field equations for stationary spacetimes. Applying our approach to static tube-like and cylindrical distributions of dust not only we recover their result but also obtain an extra term which is interpreted to be representing the classical version of the Colella-Overhauser-Werner effect (the COW experiment).
