Renormalisability of the 2PI-Hartree approximation of multicomponent scalar models in the broken symmetry phase

Non-perturbative renormalisation of a general class of scalar field theories is performed at the Hartree level truncation of the 2PI effective action in the broken symmetry regime. Renormalised equations are explicitly constructed for the one- and two-point functions. The non-perturbative counterterms are deduced from the conditions for the cancellation of the overall and the subdivergences in the complete Hartree-Dyson-Schwinger equations, with a transparent method. The procedure proposed in the present paper is shown to be equivalent to the iterative renormalisation method of Blaizot et al., Nucl. Phys. A736 (2004) 149.

Semiclassical theory of charged pion radiation by nucleons in a strong homogeneous magnetic field

Charged pions produced in very high energy hadronic interactions might be the dominant source of cosmic neutrinos in the GeV--TeV range. Spectral energy power of π^+ radiation by high energy protons moving in strong magnetic fields typical for magnetars is determined with a semiclassical treatment of the effective pion-nucleon model. The main characteristics emerging from a saddle point approximation to the summation over the allowed range of Landau levels is a sharp lower cut: E_π>0.25 E_p. The magnitude of the spectral power agrees in this region with the synchrotron radiation spectra of neutral pions.

Phase structure and phase transitions of the SU(2) x O(N) symmetric scalar field theory

Radiatively induced SU(2) symmetry breaking is shown to be a genuine feature of SU(2) x O(N) globally symmetric renormalisable field theories in the large N limit, describing interaction of a complex SU(2) doublet, O(N)-singlet field with an SU(2) singlet, O(N) vector. Symmetry breaking solutions are found even when all fields have positive renormalised squared mass. The emerging novel mechanism of symmetry breaking can reproduce with a choice of N~300 the standard range of the electroweak condensate and the Higgs mass occurring in the extended Higgs dynamics of an SU(2) symmetric Gauge+Higgs model.

Phantom field fluctuation induced Higgs effect

Symmetry breaking solutions are investigated in the $N\to \infty$ limit for the ground state of a system consisting of a Lorentz-scalar, N component ``phantom'' field and an O(N) singlet. The most general form of O(N) x Z_2 invariant quartic interaction is considered. The non-perturbatively renormalised solution demonstrates the possibility for Z_2 symmetry breaking induced by phantom fluctuations. It becomes also evident that the strength of the ``internal'' dynamics of the N-component field tunes away the ratio of the Higgs condensate and the Higgs mass from its perturbative (nearly tree-level) expression.

Non-equilibrium Higgs transition in classical scalar electrodynamics

Real time rearrangement of particle spectra is studied numerically in a U(1) Gauge+Higgs system, in the unitary gauge and in three spatial dimensions. The cold system starts from the symmetric phase. Evolution of the partial energy densities and pressures reveal well-defined equations of state for the longitudinal and transversal gauge fields very early. Longitudinal modes are excited more efficiently and thermalize the slowest. Hausdorff-dimension of the Higgs-defect manifold, eventually seeding vortex excitations is thoroughly discussed. Scaling dependence of the vortex density on the characteristic time of the symmetry breaking transition is established.

Sensitivity of the chiral phase transition of QCD to the scalar meson sector

Gribov's theory of light quark confinement implies the existence of two kinds of scalar bound states. The phase diagram of the three-flavor QCD is mapped out in the (m_pi-m_K)-plane with help of the SU_L(3)xSU_R(3) linear sigma model supplemented with the assumption that the masses of the so-called superbound scalars do not change under the variation of the pion and kaon mass. The phase boundary along the m_pi=m_K line is found in the interval 15 MeV<m_crit<25 MeV, irrespective which f_0-sigma linear combination is identified with the pure superbound state.

Mapping the boundary of the first order finite temperature restoration of chiral symmetry in the m_pi-m_K--plane with a linear sigma model

The phase diagram of the three-flavor QCD is mapped out in the low mass corner of the m_pi-m_K--plane with help of the SU_L(3) x SU_R(3) linear sigma model (LSM). A novel zero temperature parametrization is proposed for the mass dependence of the couplings away from the physical point based on the the three-flavor chiral perturbation theory (U(3) ChPT). One-loop thermodynamics is constructed by applying optimized perturbation theory. The unknown dependence of the scalar spectra on the pseudoscalar masses limitates the accuracy of the predictions. Results are compared to lattice data and similar investigations with other variants of effective chiral models. The critical value of the pion mass is below 65 MeV for all m_K values <= 800 MeV. Along the diagonal m_pi=m_K, we estimate m_crit(diag)=40+-20 MeV.

Non-Gaussian Finite Temperature Statistics of the Longitudinal Gauge Excitation of the Higgs Vacuum

Real time excitations in the broken symmetry phase of the classical Abelian Higgs model are investigated numerically in the unitary gauge. Persistent correlation is detected at finite energy density between the scalar and the longitudinal vector modes, the latter itself displaying non-Gaussian fluctuations. The effect diminishes when the energy density is lowered. Candidate effective mode variables are constructed by non-linear canonical point transformations. Their dispersion relations and equations of state are carefully tested.

The nature of the soft excitation at the critical end point of QCD

Using a large flavor number expansion and a gap equation for the pion mass the chiral quark-meson model is solved at the lowest order in the fermion contributions. In the chiral limit the tricritical point (TCP) is determined analytically. The softening of the sigma particle is verified at this point and is further investigated for a physical pion mass in the neighbourhood of the critical endpoint (CEP).

Analytic determination of the T-μphase diagram of the chiral quark model

Using a gap equation for the pion mass a nonperturbative method is given for solving the chiral quark-meson model in the chiral limit at the lowest order in the fermion contributions encountered in a large N_f approximation. The location of the tricritical point is analytically determined. A mean field potential is constructed from which critical exponents can be obtained.

T-μphase diagram of the chiral quark model from a large flavor number expansion

The chiral phase boundary of strong matter is determined in the T-μplane from the chiral quark model, applying a non-perturbatively renormalised treatment, involving chains of pion-bubbles and 1-loop fermion contributions. In the absence of explicit symmetry breaking the second order portion of the phase boundary and the location of the tricritical point (TCP) are determined analytically. Sensitivity of the results to the renormalisation scale is carefully investigated. The softening of the sigma-pole near the second order transitions is confirmed.

Non-equilibrium Goldstone phenomenon in tachyonic preheating

The dominance of the direct production of elementary Goldstone waves is demonstrated in tachyonic preheating by numerically determining the evolution of the dispersion relation, the equation of state and the kinetic power spectra for the angular degree of freedom of the complex matter field. The importance of the domain structure in the order parameter distribution for the quantitative understanding of the excitation mechanism is emphasized. Evidence is presented for the very early decoupling of the low-momentum Goldstone modes.

Universal threshold enhancement

By assuming certain analytic properties of the propagator, it is shown that universal features of the spectral function including threshold enhancement arise if a pole describing a particle at high temperature approaches in the complex energy plane the threshold position of its two-body decay with the variation of T. The case is considered, when one can disregard any other decay processes. The quality of the proposed description is demonstrated by comparing it with the detailed large N solution of the linear sigma model around the pole-threshold coincidence.

Nonequilibrium Goldstone phenomenon in Hybrid Inflation

We study the onset of Goldstone phenomenon in a hybrid inflation scenario. The physically motivated range of parameters is analyzed in order to meet the cosmological constraints. Classical equations of motion are solved and the evolution through the spontaneous symmetry breaking is followed. We emphasize the role of topological defects that partially maintain the disordered phase well after the waterfall. We study the emergence of the Goldstone excitations and their role in the onset of the radiation dominated universe.

Second sheet $σ$ pole and the threshold enhancement of the spectral function in the scalar-isoscalar meson-sector

The scalar-isoscalar propagator of the effective linear $σ$ model of meson dynamics is investigated with the help of an expansion in the number of the Goldstone bosons. A generic scenario is suggested for the temperature and density driven evolution of its pole in the second Riemann sheet. An extended temperature range, correlated with characteristic pole locations, is found where the phenomenon of threshold enhancement takes place in the corresponding spectral function.

The scalar-isoscalar spectral function of strong matter in a large N approximation

The enhancement of the scalar-isoscalar spectral function near the two-pion threshold is studied in the framework of an effective linear $σ$ model, using a large N approximation in the number of the Goldstone bosons. The effect is rather insensitive to the detailed T=0 characteristics of the $σ$ pole, it is accounted by a pole moving with increasing $T$ along the real axis of the second Riemann sheet towards the threshold location from below.
