Magnetic properties of nanowires with ferromagnetic core and antiferromagnetic shell

We present a Monte Carlo study of the magnetic properties of thin cylindrical nanowires composed of a ferromagnetic core and an antiferromagnetic shell implementing a classical spin Hamiltonian. We address systematically the impact of interface exchange coupling on the loop characteristics and the magnetization reversal mechanism. We study the effect of shell polycrystallinity on the characteristic fields of the isothermal hysteresis loop (coercivity, exchange-bias). We demonstrate that coupling to a polycrystalline antiferromagnetic shell increases the critical core diameter for transition from transverse to vortex domain walls.

Exchange bias effect in cylindrical nanowires with ferromagnetic core and polycrystalline antiferromagnetic shell

We model the exchange bias effect in thin cylindrical nanowires composed of a ferromagnetic core and an antiferromagnetic shell implementing a classical spin Hamiltonian and Monte Carlo simulations. We address systematically the effect of shell polycrystallinity on the characteristic fields of the isothermal hysteresis loop (coercivity, exchange-bias) and their angular dependence upon the direction of the applied / cooling field. We relate the observed trends to modifications of the underlying magnetization reversal mechanism. We fit our simulation results to an extended Stoner-Wohlfarth model with effective off-axis unidirectional anisotropy and demonstrate that shell polycrystallinity could lead to maximum exchange bias effect in an off-axis direction. Our results are in qualitative agreement with recent experimental studies of Co/CoO nanowires.

Monte Carlo study of the exchange bias effect in Co/CoO core-shell nanowires

We study the magnetic properties of cylindrical ferromagnetic core - antiferromagnetic shell nanowires using Monte Carlo simulations and a classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian in order to elucidate the impact of the oxidized shell on the magnetic properties and the magnetization reversal mechanism. We find that the coupling to the antiferromagnetic shell leads to suppression of the coercivity and emergence of a weak exchange bias effect. Comparison of the magnetization reversal mechanism in the bare and the surface-oxidized nanowire reveals that the domain wall propagation and annihilation remains the dominant reversal mechanism in surface oxidized nanowires as in their ferromagnetic counterparts. However, the interface exchange coupling introduces a secondary reversal mechanism activated in the central part of the wire with characteristics of coherent rotation, which acts in synergy to wall propagation leading to enhancement of the wall mobility. This effect is more pronounced in nanowires with large exchange bias values and is attributed to the uncompensated interface moments that act as nucleation centers for magnetization reversal. Our results are in good agreement with recent measurements in Co and Co/CoO nanowires.
