Wide-field global VLBI and MERLIN combined monitoring of supernova remnants in M82

From a combination of MERLIN (Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network) and global VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) observations of the starburst galaxy M82, images of 36 discrete sources at resolutions ranging from ~3 to ~80 mas at 1.7 GHz are presented. Of these 36 sources, 32 are identified as supernova remnants, 2 are HII regions, and 3 remain unclassified. Sizes, flux densities and radio brightnesses are given for all of the detected sources. Additionally, global VLBI only data from this project are used to image four of the most compact radio sources. These data provide a fifth epoch of VLBI observations of these sources, covering a 19-yr time-line. In particular, the continued expansion of one of the youngest supernova remnants, 43.31+59.3 is discussed. The deceleration parameter is a power-law index used to represent the time evolution of the size of a supernova remnant. For the source 43.31+59.3, a lower limit to the deceleration parameter is calculated to be 0.53+/-0.06, based on a lower limit of the age of this source.

Discovery of an unusual new radio source in the star-forming galaxy M82: Faint supernova, supermassive blackhole, or an extra-galactic microquasar?

A faint new radio source has been detected in the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy M82 using MERLIN radio observations designed to monitor the flux density evolution of the recent bright supernova SN2008iz. This new source was initially identified in observations made between 1-5th May 2009 but had not been present in observations made one week earlier, or in any previous observations of M82. In this paper we report the discovery of this new source and monitoring of its evolution over its first 9 months of existence. The true nature of this new source remains unclear, and we discuss whether this source may be an unusual and faint supernova, a supermassive blackhole associated with the nucleus of M82, or intriguingly the first detection of radio emission from an extragalactic microquasar.

High-velocity-resolution observations of OH main line lasers in the M82 starburst

Using the VLA, a series of high velocity resolution observations have been made of the M82 starburst at 1.6 GHz. These observations follow up on previous studies of the main line OH maser emission in the central kiloparsec of this starburst region, but with far greater velocity resolution, showing significant velocity structure in some of the maser spots for the first time. A total of thirteen masers were detected, including all but one of the previously known sources. While some of these masers are still unresolved in velocity, these new results clearly show velocity structure in spectra from several of the maser regions. Position-velocity plots show good agreement with the distribution of H{\sc i} including interesting velocity structure on the blueward feature in the west of the starburst which traces the velocity distribution seen in the ionised gas.

23 GHz VLBI Observations of SN 2008ax

We report on phase-referenced 23 GHz Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry (VLBI) observations of the type IIb supernova SN 2008ax, made with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) on 2 April 2008 (33 days after explosion). These observations resulted in a marginal detection of the supernova. The total flux density recovered from our VLBI image is 0.8$\pm$0.3 mJy (one standard deviation). As it appears, the structure may be interpreted as either a core-jet or a double source. However, the supernova structure could be somewhat confused with a possible close by noise peak. In such a case, the recovered flux density would decrease to 0.48$\pm$0.12 mJy, compatible with the flux densities measured with the VLA at epochs close in time to our VLBI observations. The lowest average expansion velocities derived from our observations are $(1.90 \pm 0.30) \times 10^5$ km s$^{-1}$ (case of a double source) and $(5.2 \pm 1.3) \times 10^4$ km s$^{-1}$ (taking the weaker source component as a spurious, close by, noise peak, which is the more likely interpretation). These velocities are 7.3 and 2 times higher, respectively, than the maximum ejecta velocity inferred from optical-line observations.

Deep MERLIN 5GHz Radio Imaging of Supernova Remnants in the M82 Starburst

The results of an extremely deep, 8-day long observation of the central kpc of the nearby starburst galaxy M82 using MERLIN (Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network) at 5 GHz are presented. The 17E-06 Jy/beam, rms noise level in the naturally weighted image make it the most sensitive high resolution radio image of M82 made to date. Over 50 discrete sources are detected, the majority of which are supernova remnants, but with 13 identified as HII regions. Sizes, flux densities and radio brightnesses are given for all of the detected sources, which are all well resolved with a majority showing shell or partial shell structures. Those sources within the sample which are supernova remnants have diameters ranging from 0.3 to 6.7 pc, with a mean size of 2.9 pc. From a comparison with previous MERLIN 5 GHz observations made in July 1992, which gives a 9.75 year timeline, it has been possible to measure the expansion velocities of ten of the more compact sources, eight of which have not been measured before. These derived expansion velocities range between 2200 and 10500 km/s.

OH main line masers in the M82 starburst

A study of the distribution of OH gas in the central region of the nearby active starburst galaxy M82 has confirmed two previously known bright masers and revealed several new main line masers. Three of these are seen only at 1665 MHz, one is detected only at 1667 MHz, while the rest are detected in both lines. Observations covering both the 1665 and 1667 MHz lines, conducted with both the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), have been used to accurately measure the positions and velocities of these features. This has allowed a comparison with catalogued continuum features in the starburst such as HII regions and supernova remnants, as well as known water and satellite line OH masers. Most of the main line masers appear to be associated with known HII regions although the two detected only at 1665 MHz are seen along the same line of sight as known supernova remnants.

8.4GHz VLBI observations of SN2004et in NGC6946

We report on 8.4GHz Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of the type II-P supernova SN2004et in the spiral galaxy NGC 6946, made on 20 February 2005 (151 days after explosion). The Very Large Array (VLA) flux density was 1.23$\pm$0.07 mJy, corresponding to an isotropic luminosity at 8.4GHz of (4.45$\pm$0.3)$\times10^{25}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ and a brightness temperature of (1.3$\pm$0.3)$\times10^{8}$ K. We also provide an improved source position, accurate to about 0.5 mas in each coordinate. The VLBI image shows a clear asymmetry. From model fitting of the size of the radio emission, we estimate a minimum expansion velocity of 15,700$\pm$2,000 km s$^{-1}$. This velocity is more than twice the expected mean expansion velocity estimated from a synchrotron self-absorbed emission model, thus suggesting that synchrotron self-absorption is not relevant for this supernova. With the benefit of an optical spectrum obtained 12 days after explosion, we favor an emission model which consists of two hot spots on an underlying expanding shell of width comparable to that of SN 1993J.

The Statistical Properties Of The Very Weak Radio Source Population In The GOODS/ACS HDF-N Region

Deep combination radio observations at 1.4GHz with the VLA and MERLIN have imaged a region 10 arcminutes square surrounding the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N). Initial studies of the weak radio source population have shown that the proportion of starburst systems increases with decreasing radio flux density with more than 70% of radio sources being starburst in nature at flux densities less than S1.4GHz)~70microJy. The recently published GOODS ACS field overlaps this area, and here we present the results of a follow-up statistical study of the very weak radio sources (S(1.4GHz)<40microJy) in an 8.5 arcminute square field centred on the HDF-N which contains the region of overlap. Radio emission at the level of a few microJy are statistically detected associated with ACS galaxies brighter than a z-band magnitude of 25. These very faint radio sources are extended starburst systems with average radii in the range 0.6 to 0.8 arcseconds and for those with measured redshifts, radio luminosities typically several times that of the nearby well-studies starburst galaxy M82.

A Survey of Kiloparsec-Scale Radio Outflows in Radio-Quiet Active Galactic Nuclei

Seyfert galaxies commonly host compact jets spanning 10-100 pc scales, but larger structures (KSRs) are resolved out in long baseline, aperture synthesis surveys. We report a new, short baseline Very Large Array (VLA) survey of a complete sample of Seyfert and LINER galaxies. Out of all of the surveyed radio-quiet sources, we find that 44% (19 / 43) show extended radio structures at least 1 kpc in total extent that do not match the morphology of the disk or its associated star-forming regions. The KSR Seyferts stand out by deviating significantly from the far-infrared - radio correlation for star-forming galaxies, and they are more likely to have a relatively luminous, compact radio source in the nucleus; these results argue that KSRs are powered by the AGN rather than starburst. KSRs probably originate from jet plasma that has been decelerated by interaction with the nuclear ISM. We demonstrate the jet loses virtually all of its power to the ISM within the inner kiloparsec to form the slow KSRs.

15 years of VLBI observations of two compact radio sources in Messier 82

We present the results of a second epoch of 18cm global Very Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations, taken on 23 February 2001, of the central kiloparsec of the nearby starburst galaxy Messier 82. These observations further investigate the structural and flux evolution of the most compact radio sources in the central region of M82. The two most compact radio objects in M82 have been investigated (41.95+575 and 43.31+592). Using this recent epoch of data in comparison with our previous global VLBI observations and two earlier epochs of European VLBI Network observations we measure expansion velocities in the range of 1500-2000km/s for 41.95+575, and 9000-11000km/s for 43.31+592 using various independent methods. In each case the measured remnant expansion velocities are significantly larger than the canonical expansion velocity (500km/s) of supernova remnants within M82 predicted from theoretical models. In this paper we discuss the implications of these measured expansion velocities with respect to the high density environment that the SNR are expected to reside in within the centre of the M82 starburst.

Linear radio structures in selected Seyfert and LINER galaxies

High resolution MERLIN 5 GHz observations (0.04") of 7 Seyfert galaxies, selected as the ones previously showing evidence of collimated ejection, have been compared with high resolution archive HST data. The radio maps reveal rich structures in all the galaxies. NGC 2639 and TXFS 2226-184 have multiple knot parsec-scale extended structures, Mrk 1034, Mrk 1210, NGC 4922C and NGC 5506 reveal one-sided jets, while IC 1481 exhibits a jet-like extension. The close correlation between the radio-emitting relativistic plasma and the ionized gas in the inner regions of these galaxies allows us to study in detail the physics close to the center of low luminosity AGN.

Sub-arcsecond imaging of the radio continuum and neutral hydrogen in the Medusa merger

We present sub-arcsecond, Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer (MERLIN) observations of the decimetre radio continuum structure and neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption from the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy NGC 4194 (the Medusa Merger). The continuum structure of the central kiloparsec of the Medusa has been imaged, revealing a pair of compact radio components surrounded by more diffuse, weak radio emission. Using the constraints provided by these observations and those within the literature we conclude that the majority of this radio emission is related to the ongoing star-formation in this merger system. With these observations we also trace deep HI absorption across the detected radio continuum structure. The absorbing HI gas structure exhibits large variations in column densities. The largest column densities are found toward the south of the nuclear radio continuum, co-spatial with both a nuclear dust lane and peaks in $^{12}$CO (1->0) emission. The dynamics of the HI absorption, which are consistent with lower resolution $^{12}$CO emission observations, trace a shallow north-south velocity gradient of ~320km/s/kpc. This gradient is interpreted as part of a rotating gas structure within the nuclear region. The HI and CO velocity structure, in conjunction with the observed gas column densities and distribution, is further discussed in the context of the fuelling and gas physics of the ongoing starburst within the centre of this merger.

Monitoring of the prompt radio emission from the unusual supernova 2004dj in NGC2403

Supernova 2004dj in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC2403 was detected optically in July 2004. Peaking at a magnitude of 11.2, this is the brightest supernova detected for several years. Here we present Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) observations of this source, made over a four month period, which give a position of R.A. = 07h37m17.044s, Dec =+65deg35'57.84" (J2000.0). We also present a well-sampled 5 GHz light curve covering the period from 5 August to 2 December 2004. With the exception of the unusual and very close SN 1987A, these observations represent the first detailed radio light curve for the prompt emission from a Type II-P supernova.

Kinematics of Ionised Gas in the Barred Seyfert Galaxy NGC 4151

We have determined the structure and kinematics of ionised gas in the weak oval bar of the archetypal Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC 4151, using the TAURUS Fabry-Perot interferometer to simultaneously map the distribution and kinematics of Hbeta emission. We also present broad-band ultraviolet imaging of the host galaxy, obtained with XMM-Newton, that shows the detailed distribution of star formation in the bar and in the optically-faint outer spiral arms. We compare the distribution and kinematics of ionised gas with that previously determined in neutral hydrogen by Mundell & Shone; we suggest that the distribution of bright, patchy UV emission close to the HI shocks is consistent with ionisation by star clusters that have formed in compressed pre-shock gas. These clusters then travel ballistically through the gaseous shock to ionise gas downstream along the leading edge of the bar. In addition, we detect, for the first time, ionised gas within the shock itself which is streaming to smaller radii in the same manner as the neutral gas.

Neutral hydrogen absorption at milliarcsecond resolutions: The radio galaxy 3C293

We present new milliarcsecond resolution observations of the H1 absorption against the kiloparsec scale inner jet of the radio galaxy 3C293. Using a combination of observations obtained with global VLBI, MERLIN and the VLA we have imaged the strong and extensive neutral hydrogen absorption against the radio core and jet of this source across a wide range of angular scales. In this proceedings we will present these new combined milliarcsecond scale VLBI results alongside our previous lower resolution MERLIN studies of the H1 absorption in this source. This study will allow us to investigate the distribution and dynamics of the H1 absorption in the centre of this source from scales of arcseconds to a few milliarcsecond.

OH in Messier 82

Several new main line OH masers have been detected in the nearby starburst galaxy M82. Eight masers have been detected to 5 sigma, six of which are new detections. Observations covering both the 1665 and 1667 MHz lines with both the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) have been used to accurately measure the positions and velocities of these features. Following analysis of the data, another six objects below 5 sigma, but with velocities consistent with the distribution inferred from the more certain detections, have been detected. These are classified as possible detections.

Radio sources at low Galactic latitudes

We present high-resolution radio observations of a sample of 65 radio sources at low Galactic latitudes. The sources were all observed at 5 GHz with the Very Large Array A-array. MERLIN observations at 5 GHz of the ultracompact HII region G34.26+0.15 and one of the extragalactic sources, B1857-000, are also presented, as are GMRT observations of HI in the direction of three sources, B1801-203, B1802-196 and B1938+229. These observations were made with the objectives of (i) finding compact components suitable for studying the effects of interstellar scattering at lower frequencies, (ii) identifying high surface-brightness lobes of background radio sources to probe the Galactic magnetic field on different scales via polarization observations, and (iii) searching for young supernova remnants. We discuss the nature of the sources found to have shell or shell-like structure and exhibiting both thermal and non-thermal spectra. Of the remaining sources, B1749-281 is coincident within the positional errors of a known pulsar, not detected earlier at 5 GHz. The rest are likely to be background extragalactic objects.

A possible radio supernova in the outer part of NGC 3310

As part of an on-going radio supernova monitoring program, we have discovered a variable, compact steep spectrum radio source ~65 arcsec (~4 kpc) from the centre of the starburst galaxy NGC 3310. If the source is at the distance of NGC 3310, then its 5 GHz luminosity is ~3 x 10^{19} WHz^-1. The source luminosity, together with its variability characteristics, compact structure (<17 mas) and its association with a group of HII regions, leads us to propose that it is a previously uncatalogued type II radio supernova. A search of archival data also shows an associated X-ray source with a luminosity similar to known radio supernova.
