Investigation of Feature Selection and Pooling Methods for Environmental Sound Classification

This paper explores the impact of dimensionality reduction and pooling methods for Environmental Sound Classification (ESC) using lightweight CNNs. We evaluate Sparse Salient Region Pooling (SSRP) and its variants, SSRP-Basic (SSRP-B) and SSRP-Top-K (SSRP-T), under various hyperparameter settings and compare them with Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Experiments on the ESC-50 dataset demonstrate that SSRP-T achieves up to 80.69 % accuracy, significantly outperforming both the baseline CNN (66.75 %) and the PCA-reduced model (37.60 %). Our findings confirm that a well-tuned sparse pooling strategy provides a robust, efficient, and high-performing solution for ESC tasks, particularly in resource-constrained scenarios where balancing accuracy and computational cost is crucial.

Quantum-Assisted Barrier Sequential Quadratic Programming for Nonlinear Optimal Control

We propose a quantum-assisted framework for solving constrained finite-horizon nonlinear optimal control problems using a barrier Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) approach. Within this framework, a quantum subroutine is incorporated to efficiently solve the Schur complement step using block-encoding and Quantum Singular Value Transformation (QSVT) techniques. We formally analyze the time complexity and convergence behavior under the cumulative effect of quantum errors, establishing local input-to-state stability and convergence to a neighborhood of the stationary point, with explicit error bounds in terms of the barrier parameter and quantum solver accuracy. The proposed framework enables computational complexity to scale polylogarithmically with the system dimension demonstrating the potential of quantum algorithms to enhance classical optimization routines in nonlinear control applications.

Quantum Solution Framework for Finite-Horizon LQG Control via Block Encodings and QSVT

We present a quantum algorithm for solving the finite-horizon discrete-time Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control problem, which integrates optimal control and state estimation in the presence of stochastic disturbances and noise. Classical approaches to LQG require solving a backward Riccati recursion and a forward Kalman filter, both requiring computationally expensive matrix operations with overall time complexity $\mathcal{O}(T n^3)$, where $n$ is the system dimension and $T$ is the time horizon. While efficient classical solvers exist, especially for small to medium-sized systems, their computational complexity grows rapidly with system dimension. To address this, we reformulate the full LQG pipeline using quantum linear algebra primitives, including block-encoded matrix representations and quantum singular value transformation (QSVT) techniques for matrix inversion and multiplication. We formally analyze the time complexity of each algorithmic component. Under standard assumptions on matrix condition numbers and encoding precision, the total runtime of the quantum LQG algorithm scales polylogarithmically with the system dimension $n$ and linearly with the time horizon $T$, offering an asymptotic quantum speedup over classical methods.

Robust Entanglement Generation in Bipartite Quantum Systems Using Optimal Control

Quantum entanglement is a key resource for quantum technologies, yet its efficient and high-fidelity generation remains a challenge due to the complexity of quantum dynamics. This paper presents a quantum optimal control framework to maximize bipartite entanglement within a fixed time horizon, under bounded control inputs. By leveraging Pontryagin's Minimum Principle, we derive a set of necessary conditions that guide the design of time-dependent control fields to steer a two-qubit system toward maximally entangled Bell states. The entanglement is quantified using concurrence, and the control objective is formulated as maximizing this measure at the terminal time. Our approach is validated through numerical simulations of Liouville-von Neumann dynamics. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of switching-based control strategies in achieving robust entanglement, offering insights into practical implementations of quantum control for entanglement generation in quantum networks.

A Unified Stability Analysis of Safety-Critical Control using Multiple Control Barrier Functions

Ensuring liveness and safety of autonomous and cyber-physical systems remains a fundamental challenge, particularly when multiple safety constraints are present. This letter advances the theoretical foundations of safety-filter Quadratic Programs (QP) and Control Lyapunov Function (CLF)-Control Barrier Function (CBF) controllers by establishing a unified analytical framework for studying their stability properties. We derive sufficient feasibility conditions for QPs with multiple CBFs and formally characterize the conditions leading to undesirable equilibrium points at possible intersecting safe set boundaries. Additionally, we introduce a stability criterion for equilibrium points, providing a systematic approach to identifying conditions under which they can be destabilized or eliminated. Our analysis extends prior theoretical results, deepening the understanding of the conditions of feasibility and stability of CBF-based safety filters and the CLF-CBF QP framework.

From Few-Shot Optimal Control to Few-Shot Learning

We present an approach to solving unconstrained nonlinear optimal control problems for a broad class of dynamical systems. This approach involves lifting the nonlinear problem to a linear ``super-problem'' on a dual Banach space, followed by a non-standard ``exact'' variational analysis, -- culminating in a descent method that achieves rapid convergence with minimal iterations. We investigate the applicability of this framework to mean-field control and discuss its perspectives for the analysis of information propagation in self-interacting neural networks.

Optimizing Maximally Entangled State Generation via Pontryagin's Principle

We propose an optimal control strategy to generate maximally entangled states in bipartite quantum systems. Leveraging the Pontryagin Principle, we derive time-dependent control fields that maximize the entanglement measure, specifically concurrence, within minimal time while adhering to input constraints. Our formulation addresses the Liouville-von Neumann dynamics of the reduced density matrix under unitary evolution. The strategy is numerically validated through simulations, demonstrating its ability to drive the system from an initial perturbed separable state to a maximally entangled target state. The results showcase the effectiveness of switching control fields in optimizing entanglement, with potential applications in quantum technologies, including communication, computation, and sensing.

State-Constrained Optimal Control for Coherence Preservation in Multi-Level Open Quantum Systems

This paper addresses the optimal control of quantum coherence in multi-level systems, modeled by the Lindblad master equation, which captures both unitary evolution and environmental dissipation. We develop an energy minimization framework to control the evolution of a qutrit (three-level) quantum system while preserving coherence between states. The control problem is formulated using Pontryagin's Minimum Principle in the form of Gamkrelidze, incorporating state constraints to ensure coherence remains within desired bounds. Our approach accounts for Markovian decoherence, demonstrating that the Lindblad operator is non-unital, which reflects the irreversible decay processes inherent in the system. The results provide insights into effectively maintaining quantum coherence in the presence of dissipation.

State Estimation and Control for Stochastic Quantum Dynamics with Homodyne Measurement: Stabilizing Qubits under Uncertainty

This paper introduces a Lyapunov-based control approach with homodyne measurement. We study two filtering approaches: (i) the traditional quantum filtering and (ii) a modified version of the extended Kalman filtering. We examine both methods in order to directly estimate the evolution of the coherence vector elements, using sequential homodyne current measurements. The latter case explicitly addresses the dynamics of a stochastic master equation with correlated noise, transformed into a state-space representation, ensuring by construction the quantum properties of the estimated state variable. In addition, we consider the case where the quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian is unknown, and the system experiences uncertainties. In this case, we show as expected that both filters lose performance, exhibiting large expected estimation errors. To address this problem, we propose a simple multiple model estimation scheme that can be directly applied to any of the studied filters. We then reconstruct the estimated density operator \( \hatρ \), describing the full state of the system, and subject it to a control scheme. The proposed switching-based Lyapunov control scheme, which is fed with \( \hatρ \), guarantees noise-to-state practically stable in probability of the desired stationary target set with respect to the estimation error variance. We demonstrate our approach's efficacy in stabilizing a qubit coupled to a leaky cavity under homodyne detection in the presence of uncertainty in resonance frequency.

On Minimum-Dispersion Control of Nonlinear Diffusion Processes

This work collects some methodological insights for numerical solution of a "minimum-dispersion" control problem for nonlinear stochastic differential equations, a particular relaxation of the covariance steering task. The main ingredient of our approach is the theoretical foundation called $\infty$-order variational analysis. This framework consists in establishing an exact representation of the increment ($\infty$-order variation) of the objective functional using the duality, implied by the transformation of the nonlinear stochastic control problem to a linear deterministic control of the Fokker-Planck equation. The resulting formula for the cost increment analytically represents a "law-feedback" control for the diffusion process. This control mechanism enables us to learn time-dependent coefficients for a predefined Markovian control structure using Monte Carlo simulations with a modest population of samples. Numerical experiments prove the vitality of our approach.

Quantum State Transfer Optimization: Balancing Fidelity and Energy Consumption using Pontryagin Maximum Principle

In this study, we address a control-constrained optimal control problem pertaining to the transformation of quantum states. Our objective is to navigate a quantum system from an initial state to a desired target state while adhering to the principles of the Liouville-von Neumann equation. To achieve this, we introduce a cost functional that balances the dual goals of fidelity maximization and energy consumption minimization. We derive optimality conditions in the form of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle (PMP) for the matrix-valued dynamics associated with this problem. Subsequently, we present a time-discretized computational scheme designed to solve the optimal control problem. This computational scheme is rooted in an indirect method grounded in the PMP, showcasing its versatility and efficacy. To illustrate the practicality and applicability of our methodology, we employ it to address the case of a spin $\frac{1}{2}$ particle subjected to interaction with a magnetic field. Our findings shed light on the potential of this approach to tackle complex quantum control scenarios and contribute to the broader field of quantum state transformations.

A Fast Row-Stochastic Decentralized Method for Distributed Optimization Over Directed Graphs

In this paper, we introduce a fast row-stochastic decentralized algorithm, referred to as FRSD, to solve consensus optimization problems over directed communication graphs. The proposed algorithm only utilizes row-stochastic weights, leading to certain practical advantages in broadcast communication settings over those requiring column-stochastic weights. Under the assumption that each node-specific function is smooth and strongly convex, we show that the FRSD iterate sequence converges with a linear rate to the optimal consensus solution. In contrast to the existing methods for directed networks, FRSD enjoys linear convergence without employing a gradient tracking (GT) technique explicitly, rather it implements GT implicitly with the use of a novel momentum term, which leads to a significant reduction in communication and storage overhead for each node when FRSD is implemented for solving high-dimensional problems over small-to-medium scale networks. In the numerical tests, we compare FRSD with other state-of-the-art methods, which use row-stochastic and/or column-stochastic weights.

Exploring Strange Entanglement: Experimental and Theoretical Perspectives on Neutral Kaon Systems

This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the properties and phenomena associated with neutral K-mesons. Kaons are quantum systems illustrating strange behaviours. We begin by examining the significance of strangeness and charge parity violation in understanding these particles. The concept of strangeness oscillations is then introduced, explaining oscillations between $K^0$ and $\bar{K}^0$ states. The regeneration of $K_S$ is investigated, uncovering the underlying mechanisms involved. The discussion moves on to quasi-spin space, exploring its bases and their implications. The entangled states of kaon pairs $(K^0,\bar K^0)$ are considered, with a focus on maximally entangled neutral kaons and non-maximally entangled states. Decoherence effects on entangled kaons are examined, utilizing the density matrix description to capture the dynamics. A dedicated decoherence parameter is introduced to quantify the impact of decoherence. Furthermore, the chapter investigates the loss of entanglement through measures such as Von Neumann entanglement entropy, entanglement of formation, and concurrence. These measures provide insights into quantifying and characterizing entanglement in the context of neutral kaons. Through this comprehensive exploration of properties, phenomena, and entanglement dynamics, this chapter aims to pointing out recent works on neutral kaons, contributing to advancements in particle physics.

Quantum Pontryagin Neural Networks in Gamkrelidze Form Subjected to the Purity of Quantum Channels

We investigate a time and energy minimization optimal control problem for open quantum systems, whose dynamics is governed through the Lindblad (or Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad) master equation. The dissipation is Markovian time-independent, and the control is governed by the Hamiltonian of a quantum-mechanical system. We are specifically interested to study the purity in a dissipative system constrained by state and control inputs. The idea for solving this problem is by the combination of two following techniques. We deal with the state constraints through Gamkrelidze revisited method, while handling control constraints through the idea of saturation functions and system extensions. This is the first time that quantum purity conservation is formulated in such framework. We obtain the necessary conditions of optimality through the Pontryagin Minimum Principle. Finally, the resulted boundary value problem is solved by a Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) approach. The exploited Pontryagin PINN technique is also new in quantum control context. We show that these PINNs play an effective role in learning optimal control actions.

An Application of Pontryagin Neural Networks to Solve Optimal Quantum Control Problems

Reliable high-fidelity quantum state transformation has always been considered as an inseparable part of quantum information processing. In this regard, Pontryagin maximum principle has proved to play an important role to achieve the maximum fidelity in an optimum time or energy. Motivated by this, in this work, we formulate a control constrained optimal control problem where we aim to minimize time and also energy subjected to a quantum system satisfying the bilinear Schrodinger equation. We derive the first order optimality conditions through the application of Pontryagin Maximum (minimum) Principle, which results in a boundary value problem. Next, in order to obtain efficient numerical results, we exploit a particular family of physics-informed neural networks that are specifically designed to tackle the indirect method based on the Maximum Principle of Pontryagin. This method has not yet been studied in the quantum context, but it can significantly speed up the process. To this end, we first obtain a set of relations which finally let us compute the optimal control strategy to determine the time- and energy-optimal protocol driving a general initial state to a target state by a quantum Hamiltonian with bounded control. We make use of the so-called "qutip" package in python, and the newly developed "tfc" python package.
